In the semi-spirit of this page:

"The madman jumped into their midst and pierced them with his eyes. "Whither is God?" he cried; "I will tell you. WE HAVE KILLED HIM - you and I. All of us are his murderers. But how did we do this? How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideward, foreward, in all direction? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us? Do we not need to light candles in the morning? Do we hear nothing as yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? Do we smell nothing as yet of the divine decomposition? Gods, too, decompose. God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him."

Learn it, know it, memorize it even if, no especially if you don't believe it.

No offence to anyone, but how could you NOT know it's Friedrich Nietzsche? That's only his most famous quote.

Yerffej didn't...

You know, I think Nietzche is pretty bright...once you get past the whole "God is dead" thing you'll realize it's a bright statement...we *did* "kill him" though I believe it's because we "forgot" about him (I believe because of materialism but I don't want to delve into it too far). It's like John Lennon's quote, "the Beatles are bigger than Jesus"- taken WAY out of context, because the original quote slammed the idea because it's materialistic.

Nietzsche was against idealism, including the Hegelian form that was engulfing Germany. This Hegelian idealism was partly responsible or perhaps lead up to the nationalistic squabbling seen during the late 19th century and 20th century.

By partly responsible I was talking about the Hegelian idealism that was responsible, not Nietzsche, think that's where confusion was.

By partly responsible I was talking about the Hegelian idealism that was responsible, not Nietzsche, think that's where confusion was.

Ah...I see. Yeah, I confused that one.

I also found this about Nietzsche, not sure if it's true (it's from Wikipedia):

"One of the main themes in Nietzsche's work is that ancient Roman society was grounded in master morality, and that this morality disappeared as the slave morality of Christianity spread through ancient Rome. Nietzsche was concerned with the state of European culture during his lifetime and therefore focused much of his analysis on the history of master and slave morality within Europe. Occasional references, however, also suggest that he meant these terms to be applied to other societies."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Nietzche#Master_morality_and_slave_morality

I can see from the article anyway that Nietzsche was no friend of democracy, because he believes the masses were too weak to make decisions; and, while I'd agree with him that the transformation of the Empire from a quasi-liberal society to a Christian theocracy helped destroy the (RL) Western Roman Empire, I disagree with his logic. He says it happened because the Western Roman Empire became "slaves" and were no longer strong, yet the West's theocratic years are also the most autocratic the Western Empire had ever been, plus the Byzantine Empire- the Eastern Roman Empire- survived for a good thousand years afterward as a Christian state (I argue it never feel, but that's a different story). He doesn't sound like he knows that much about Rome- in fact, he probably sounds like the majority of people who write off the Romans as "people who turned Christians into lion feed".

Nietzsche was not talking about political power, he despised many politicians including one of my other favorites from the time Bismark.

He was talking about the strength of the will of the Roman people. In the books I read he did not so much compare Roman master morality to Christian slave morality but Greek master morality to Christian slave morality.

He looks at what the values were within the master morality: power, strength, pride, justice, Aristotalean hierarchy and contrasts them to the values held within the slave mentality: weakness, humility, mercy, universal equality.

The emergance of Christianity and the seductiveness of its values, not the amount of power vested in the ruler is what he argues made the Romans weak.

I wouldn't underestimate Nietzsche, and that article only makes a few brief sentences on what he thought about Rome. For a further evaluation of his view on the history of ethics I would suggest 'On the Genealogy of Morals,' short book and far more in depth than I can easily write about.

I'm starting to see it now, although I still find it a bit simplistic (though mind you, I haven't read the book). Still, though, the Romans also valued universal equality- read what they write about the Emperors. You'll find every "good" one valued equality and fairness, and every "bad" one were despots who only pleased themselves. Sure, it's not reality but it's a great insight into the thoughts of the Roman people themselves, and it's personally shocking to see how congruent their thought patterns are to our own.

Sure, it's not reality but it's a great insight into the thoughts of the Roman people themselves, and it's personally shocking to see how congruent their thought patterns are to our own.

My explanation was simple, no reflections on his work. To say Nietzsche thought slave morality was bad and master morality was good is a gross over simplification, but that is how Nietzsche is generally presented sadly. Much of his thought was devoted to finding a way to be ammoral, or to not have morals which in my opinion is impossible by my definition of morality. 'Beyond Good and Evil,' Nietzsche brought into question the belief in opposite values and if they exist. We over simplify everything by finding an opposite, making things into either/or decisions and Nietzsche wonders if opposites even exists, and if they don't how to communicate or think without them.

Nietzsche despised the ideal of equality and thought it degrading to superior peoples. He saw countless times where the masses felt threatened by a superior person and out of fear would attempt to drag that person back into equality. His attack was against the ideals of the heard and their castrating effects on those who strove to be better, to be superior, and to rise above.

I'll not sure how far the Romans went but I do remember they took a while to incorporate others on the Italian peninsula as Roman citizens. Nietzsche concentrated more on the times when the Romans held more Aristocratic views like the Greeks.

Its hard to talk about Nietzsche's works but to incorporate different parts of history and this 'big picture' is rather difficult, Nietzsche concentrated more on individual pre-existensialist issues where talking about the strength of power of a nation would confusing since his view of power is so far different than normal.

So Nietzsche was all about the "deeper meaning" and how nothing's "black and white". Sounds like my kind of guy, because I'd agree. He also sounds like a cynical man, like he'd been bumped from power- perhaps that's where the whole "herd" thing comes from.

As far as the Romans themselves were concerned, yes, it took Rome 600 years to grant the Italians full Roman citizenship but it also took Rome 500 to take all of Italy, so yes, it did take the Romans a while to grant the Italians citizenship. Furthermore, the idea of citizenship wasn't static in the Roman Empire- looking at Roman history you'll see that they were very adept at changing if they had to, which is why they extended citizenship twice- in 91 BC to the rest of Italy and in 212 to the rest of the Empire. Plus, the Romans had always recognized the idea of "partial citizenship", as they allowed their conquered peoples to have extensive rights even though it wasn't up to the standard of full Roman citizenship (though this changed as citizenship was extended with the later decrees).

Yes, the Empire did not have "equality" as we know it today, but let's not forget that what equality means today was nowhere near what it meant back then. To the Romans, anyone outside of Rome were barbarians who didn't deserve full rights unless they earned it. Still, though, the fact that they recognized such a concept is quite telling, and the fact that they extended citizenship points to that recognition.

Nietzsche is not a 'deeper meaning' kinda person, he's just deep. Meaning or the metaphysical meaning of 'meaning' was rejected by Nietzsche. As for cynical, I wouldn't say that. Critical, not cynical, he undermined social norms but did not replace them with this 'man is a disgusting, lieing, worthless beast' pessimistic mentality of cynics but a 'man is a beautiful, lieing, powerful beast.' He hated pessimism, resentment, and nihilism. I could best sum his unusual joy up I think in these quote, "The overman is one who has organized the chaos of his passions, given style to his character, and become creative. Aware of life’s terrors, he affirms life without resentment." or "The greatest expression of the will to power is to not only be at peace with what was and what is, but to want what was and what is repeated for all eternity." For ancient philosophers I would tie him more to Heraclitus.

I'm reading an essay by Tocqueville about how to balance equality and liberty in a healthy society, and I can feel the Nietzschen part of me wanting to tear the argument to pieces.

He still seems like someone who got burned...I mean, why else would he think "the herd" holds him back? Granted, it could be an observation, but to make statements like he does about "herds" there had to have been some bitterness involved. I can tell he probably didn't work well with people, especially if he believes they just hinder his abilities (because he probably thought he was smart).

I found the Genealogy of Morals online...I'll take a look at it.

I found the Genealogy of Morals online...I'll take a look at it.

I don't know much about his biography, I do know his father was a priest who died when he was young, and I know he served in the Prussian military during the Franco-Prussian as a medic and hated it. He was very anti-social and isolated. A quote from him, apparently was on his door:

"I live in my own place
have never copied nobody even half,
and at any master who lacks the grace
to laugh at himself—I laugh."

I am only speculating but from some of his personal experience he may have gotten his hatred of the heard from the Germans who put him into that war, were fueled by religious and nationalisitic collectivism that he hated, and gave birth to some of his most disliked people: Hegel, Kant, dozens of anti-Semites, and later Wagner whom he initially admired. But even before this he was very much against utilitarianism as a philosopher so perhaps he was naturally like this.

He didn't think the heard was holding him back, but saw the heard trying to hold great men back. Despite his pride he did not think of himself as an ubermensch. It was not that the heard was attacking him, but that the heard was devaluating, was castrating life in general.

He was very sickly, as I recall some think he died from complications due to syphillis from a visit to a single prostitute (a lesson to all philosophers). Another itneresting tidbit; some think he was in love with his sister whom he wrote about but I doubt the claim from what I've read, but I'm no master on thsi subject.

It's quite possible he never called himself the ubermensch because he didn't want to come across as pompous, but most likely he did hold at least his abilities in high regard. This could also be why he didn't say the herd was specifically holding him back- since he wanted "the herd" to read it, the last thing he wanted was for the herd to read that he didn't like them because then they'd just write him off as "having an axe to grind". He sounds like he was very subtle in his thought process and way of thinking.

He knew who his audience was and he didn't write for the masses nor did he want them to making his writing some of the most honest I've seen. And trust me he was openly pompous (Ecce Homo: essay titles, 'Why I am so Clever', 'Why I am so Wise', 'Why I am a Destiny') He did not publish many books and only sold a few to a handful of very educated ppl during the time in contrast to say Marx who took it upon himself to spread his ideology to the masses. Nietzsche knew the masses could not be changed from their addiction to belief and trying to convince them of anything would require the same seductive lies as those of Socrates and Jesus (two words he often attacked in his writings 'belief' and 'conviction'). As a philosopher he would not do such a thing.

Still...does a philosopher who wants other educated folk- who were probably all pompous to begin with- want to appear too confident in his abilities? That would just invite criticism and maybe it wouldn't stick as well.

He wasn't trying to convince or change anyone, and he had every right to be pompous, he recieved a professorship at a very young age 25 years old I believe.
And he did not even teach philosophy, he tought philology. I have no doubt that he wanted criticism, he loved the thrill of the fight but choose words instead, "Courageous, untroubled, mocking, and violent that is what Wisdom wants us to be. Wisdom is a woman, and loves only a warrior."

Yeah, but if he called himself the "ubermensch" wouldn't that be a little *too* pompous? I mean, if he got up there he would just be written off- people wouldn't waste their time with him.

Yeah, but if he called himself the "ubermensch" wouldn't that be a little *too* pompous? I mean, if he got up there he would just be written off- people wouldn't waste their time with him.

I simply don't think he cared what his readers thought of him, he didn't care what the majority of people thought of him so why should he care in his books? He was deeply insulting to many groups of people; Jews, Germans, and British, and women in particular. Many people would write him off anyway. He was not very well known during his time and almost forgotten for a while. I don't know when he was revitalized but it was after hsi death that he became acknowledged.

Ok, for example Thus Spake Zarathustra, one of his publications consisted of 40 or so books. I think similarly the most books he got sold was in the hundreds range.

So the argument is this: Nietzsche didn't call himself an ubermensch, you speculate its because of public interpretation. I say he was being honest: as for why he would not consider himself an ubermensch I would go back to his 'Will to Power.' He thought the celibate life was for the weak, and he himself is believed to have only had sex with a prostitute. He also thought the ubermensch would through away certain types of reasoning and logic that he held and used. The ubermensch would not be as intelligent as he was, but would be more creative than he was.

Maybe he didn't want the attention...if he called himself the "ubermensch" he'd get attention. I don't know...I just think it'd be odd if he described a "superman" then said it was him. Plus, if he did, in fact, call himself "superman" people would expect it of him and he wouldn't want to have to uphold that.

This would require a very in depth discussion of what he meant by the ubermensh which I am not completely qualified to undertake as my readings are generally from his earlier years and I'm only half-way through Der Wille zur Macht.

To avoid attention, perhaps but again he knew exactly who his audience was, who would be buying his books on a first name basis. I seriously doubt he gave a second thought to how his audience would take his work but instead focussed more on his own thought. My proof would be the countless times he pokes fun of himself and the fact that so many of the people he criticized and thought about never read nor never would read his books. I doubt he would've cared about upholding any expectations of him by his readers.

That's fine. I don't have to touch the maps, just copy & paste in the claims list. Is it fine on the spreadsheet too?

What aggevates me is when someone gets land, I edit. Then someone gets that land. I edit. Then it changes hands again. I lose track of it through the process as I update post-by-post from where I updated. It gets VERY frustrating.

What aggevates me is when someone gets land, I edit. Then someone gets that land. I edit. Then it changes hands again. I lose track of it through the process as I update post-by-post from where I updated. It gets VERY frustrating.

Repetative, meaningless, otherwise avoidable tasks really infuriate the fuck out of me.

Entirelly understandable, its all good on the spreadsheet so no worries there.

I missed the first half an hour but saw the rest of the movie last night. Pretty good.

Quick question for all the computer knowledgable people. My printer is printing only black and white, but it says my color ink is full. And the I checked through properties and everything looked normal. Any tips?

Is it a new cartridge? If so ensure that the protection guard is removed. It may also be a busted cartridge. I would put another one in there just to check and see. If it still doesn't print color then it is probably a grayscale setting or something. If it works there is something amiss with the cartridge.

Ladies and gentlemen, today marks the death of one of the most venerable things in history. Today, the F-14 dropped its last bomb and made its last combat trap. I may be agnostic but I think we should hold a prayer vigil for the greatest plane ever made, a New York plane, a plane that Qaddaffi is so afraid of he had to be put in metal lock-up twice, a place Iraqis fear and run from, a plane the Communist Bloc feared so much they desired its missiles more than anyone desires to do a super model, a plane that could fly around the world and be defeated only by Chuck Norris. We'll miss you F-14 Tomcat and your fury and glory.

My huge, massive, unconquerable economy just shrugged off such a threat. Ooh yeah.

But seriously, how did you work all that out?

In light of the recent stock market crush we would like to make a donation of 1 trillion rubles to be distributed proportionally on the "need more, get more" basis amongst all nations that suffered from the crush to help replenish their business infrastructure. Exeptions to that list are ofcourse the member states of The October Alliance and the nation of Bjornya. We hope our money will be used wisely.

We are creating the special Foreign Business Replenishment Committee that will deal with all the matters of the distribution of our donation.

They have already made several decisions in solving the problems in short term for several nations. For example we are prepared to purchase the oil orders that were canceled from Elephantum at 90% of their market price. That should majorly help revamp elephanti oil business. We await Elephanti response.

Thank god TKT just promised me 10 trillion from the Mozambique deal. The other good side is you hit the rich areas worst. Gives me a nice chance to diversify the economy anyways.

Hawdawg How about an embassy in each of our captials (Manama and ?????) and a consulate in the same region of the base (Chennai/Madras and Maputo?)?

Pushka Elephanti companies would be glad to accept this deal.

In addition, to countries who are affected by the recent collapse will be offered oil at a 0% profit for the time being. Reduced prices will be offered to other nations, and all taxes on imports to buisnesses (ie not personal orders) will be tarriff free.

18-02-2006, 17:17
Well...we don't really need the money (getting 10 tril from TKT) but we'll give you as much oil as you want

This would be a good time to set up reserves, as oil probably wont be this cheap for a long time.

Pushka
18-02-2006, 17:24
Hey i own the 8th largest oil field on the planet, it can last me for a while. But there can never be too much oil. Reserve facilities are in Yakutia you should have tankers ready to go since then the whole thing crushed a lot of orders must have been cancelled (thats what Bjorn said), so yeah, get em all over to Yakutia. Money of course is not the problem, but mind the 10% discount.

Also your government may not need money but that 100 bil is not for your government its to go directly to your companies. But hey since you got 10 tril coming your way i guess you can help them yourself, so i'll cut it to 50 bil, since i am also purchasing a lot from them.

So can i get an estimate, about how much? I am buying all the oil contracts that were cancelled that day, which should be a bunch. I don't know whats the big amount of oil to buy and whats a small amount so can you point me in the right direction?

Hey Lay i just checked you out on NSTracker and hmm...your whole government budget is only 19 trillion dollars, meanwhile your imports are 23 trillion dollars. Unless i am wrong that makes you a 3rd world country. But anyways your defense budget is just 5 trillion dollars, thats nothing. So you been buying all that stuff for your army, and maintaining it and stuff and my question is with what money?
Hirgizstan
18-02-2006, 18:00
Thats some funny facts there Pushka. Small Government budget doesn't mean its bad. Simply means the Government doesn't need huge amounts of money to keep it running. Your own Government Budget isn't much to brag about either. Your Government waste is 6 Trillion, Lay's is a third of that. Your exports and imports are also very low, Lay's are more than twice yours.
Your trade surplus also isn't much to brag about. Your defense Budget is also miniscule.

I'm not being rude or haughty Pushka, just trying to tell you (politely) that when you point the finger, three point back at you.

In light of the recent economic troubles resulting from the enforced threat of war in Africa and the former threat of war in various other places, the Government of the COH has authorised a $1.5 Trillion care package for the rejuvination of business and commerce.

Any and all nations of the world are welcome to request help under what the Government are calling the 'World Business Rejuvination Package' (WBRP). Any and all applications will be considered and offers finalised quickly. Individual Corporations/Business' must ensure they have Government approval to apply for the Package.

The only nations not to be considered at all are that of Tyrandis, and that of Pushka, due to their selfish policy of not allowing their own aid Package to be avaliable to TOA members and certain other nations.

Pushka don't think you weren't affected, I checked what they would have been and you had a drop of about 10% as well.

If you give money to all affected nations except TOA (I wasn't affected) then you'd be giving $ to USB and Elephantum, perhaps TLS if he counts (so you know). The most heavily hit were Hawdawg based companies.

The Bjornoyan economy stands fast and we will continue to try and find ways to resolve this problem even under threat of war by her neighbors.

And yes, I have a formula. All laid out to see in the second post of BISE.

Firstly, I do the numbers by a strict calculation system. When I'm done with that I have my base number and generally stick to it unless there are some advancements and such in which case I give maybe +-3%

Second, I have to relate the numbers with E2 as a whole, I do not make the numbers from what is going on in E2. My numbers do not reflect reality, they are reality. Thus last time we had a stock market boom (and surprise, a war was going on as well!) I blaimed the boom on the economic advantaged brought by war. This time used the same cause but with a different result (crash)

The crash was not a result of any nation in particular but many nations ironically must have made poor business related decision when answering issues.

Krey, now's your chance to become a powerful merchant nation.

In order to help restore the global economy, the Barbary Coast Company has decided on a plan to stimulate global trade; every country that allows the Barbary Coast Company to operate in their country without tariffs on their goods will receive 50% discounts on all goods we bring into their country. While this will result in a temporary loss for the company, we believe it is essential to help restore the world's economy.

However, all country's with which this deal takes place must not be at war with another nation.

OOC: Seeing how the Barbary Coast Company pretty much is Carthage, this is a pretty sweet deal, if I say so myself. I control quite alot of resources that many nations repairing from war need, and without tariffs but with the discount you still get cheaper goods.

Yes, the numbers on NS calculators have value, its how the game works.

This didn't have anything to do with E2, its what the calculators spit out. And they spit out numbers for your nation too. You just brought them up to Lay last page, I'm bringing yours up to you.

Pushka:

Current GDP: 57,367,540,145,065/Initial GDP: 62,741,711,276,421= .914 * 100 = 91.4%

100- 91.4 = 8.6% loss

Current Defense: 16,474,386,454,776/ Initial Defense 18,381,631,125,492= .896 * 100 = 89.6%

100 - 89.6 = 10.4% loss

You can't argue with numbers.
