Jeruselem,

I'm around. Your kit in the roster thread? I'll prolly get around to looking at it later. But there hasn't been any reason for me to be active in the WCDT for a while, so I've just been reading. The robbers aren't giving the title up without a fight :)

Also,

looking at the schedule is there any way you could space out the proper a bit more? I'm guessing you are trying to get it done early for university break purposes and to avoid conflict with winter holidays and what not, but it would be good to have every other day, at least for the group stage of the cup.

Ya, the kit is there! I was interested in the robber's team strip.

The intention for the compressed schedule was simple; Veph will not be online after the 14th (back home after his final exams, if memory serves).

And, yes, others having not-dissimilar holiday plans.

It means we can get everything in before humongous Christmas/New Year/Non-and-other-religiously-affliated-holiday period kicks off. The options are to either do it quick, or do it long with fairly large amounts of disorder and breaks.

17-11-2007, 14:37
hmmm.... in terms of the getting it done quick adding three off days in the group stage would still get it done well before Christmas, although it would mean that KP has to do the last few days all by himself. If it isn't possible it isn't possible. However if you could find a way to do it I do think you should spread out the group stage.

Quite frankly, Az, I'm sick of the fact you continue to insist everything the hosts do suit you. You also [successfully] influenced the World Cup 37 schedule. When the hosts set it, we usually take everything into account. Just let the hosts do their job already, shut up, and get on with it.

These would be the two correct answers.

I apologize for having to cram the finals in so tightly, but with the Cup of Harmony delayed as much as it was (which in turn delayed the BoF), our hands were pretty much tied.

Good lord LE. I made a suggestion. Yes I make lots of suggestions. I have opinions on how things should be done. I know what it's like to host. I also know that suggestions on how to do things aren't a big deal. I don't know why you're so upset about the fact that I requested that things be done differently than what the hosts suggested.

Because you have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT to tell the hosts how things should be done. The hosts will do what they want. This was the same in World Cup 37 that made everyone pissed off at you, and also why you lost the hosting vote for WC38 so resoundingly.

Oversimplifying the issue. More than one factor goes into voting for hosts.

No doubt, but I know at least three or four who voted for KPV solely because Az was involved with the other bid, after his outbursts during WC37.

My point is this - it's irritating that Az is becoming another TnUI/Rejis and trying to control everything from the side, even when it's the hosts who have [almost] complete control. Why the hell should anyone even consider his wishes? Maybe because if we don't, he starts making noise until we do, as he did in WC37.

Just to prove - originally the WC37 schedule was very similar to the current WC38 one (and almost identical to WC36), with no breaks between matches in finals, due to my schedule. Of course, Az made the exact same argument that the matches should be dragged out, and for Legal to take over from me the last few matches when I would've been unavailable (which was, indeed, what happened in the end, after he continued to insist that we do so despite strong objections from me). Exactly the same here - he wants the matches dragged out, and for KP to take over from Bedi the last few matches when he's not available. Why should any of us have to listen to him?

I know I for one don't want to be pumping out an RP while 10 other members of my family are in town for associated December Holidays. The schedule is fine the way it is.

Before you know it, there'll be demands that results during the Finals should be TGed the day of scorination, and then posted the next. Which, if I recall, I likened to "The fans all waiting outside the stadium instead of going in and watching, and then the manager coming out and telling them the score... if he felt like it."

And Demot got Oliverry again. That'll be interesting.

Can I also bring up for discussion the hosts' plans about a possible consideration for RP bonus for the 7 people who took part ICly in the draw in the IRC channel. While they certainly have the right to do so, and those involved did contribute ICly, it seems to unnecessarily give the 70 or so others who couldn't be at the draw one reason or another a slight disadvantage. Maybe the hosts could consider incorporating the bonus that would've been earned from the IC draw with the pre-cup RPs of those involved, rather than awarding an RP bonus outright; it would seem less consequential than giving the seven an outright bonus. Which may be what the hosts are planning, since I don't know any details, except that they're considering something.
Whichever the final decision, some kind of open discussion about it instead of a backdoor approach, I think, would be good.

How dare you make a suggestion about something the hosts have done. Once they've decided something, it's decided right? :p:p:p:p:p

But seriously I actually agree with you here. I do think its a bit strange to give any kind of serious RP bonus for an IRC thing without making it known beforehand, as the forums are really supposed to be the main place for the game. If it is done, it would be considered as part of the "MD0" RP bonus. Recall from the bid thread that the way our RP bonus works, any given RP will count for a total of three matchdays. Roster posts are currently being considered as a "MD -1" bonus, while other pre-cup RPs are "MD0". Anyway, my point is, it would just be counted as part of the existing MD0 bonus, rather than as a separate entity, and just like with all other pre-cup RPs, it would expire around MD3.

That said, since there are convincing arguments in both directions (it was an IC exercise, but at the same time it wasn't really available to everyone), I'd like a bit of community input before deciding to go through with it.

Well, to be fair had I been around (and not asleep) I probably wouldn't be making any noise about it (and fair enough, too, so I don't blame the seven for not saying much). I also have absolute confidence in KP and Vephrall to host the cup, so will go along with however they do things.

Now, in the second stint of Starblaydi world cup play, Vilita will be the second team I play. Very weird.

If you want to take this further, I would suggest starting a thread in NS general titled 'Israel doesn't occupy anything', where I'm sure you'll find the robust debate you're looking for.

That said, I also oppose the use of IRC chat for RP bonuses - if that's what the hosts are seriously implementing - as there are those of us have never accessed, nor have any desire to access, that particular digital medium.

A fun exercise though it may have been at the time, let us not forget that the purpose of RPing is not for the RP bonus. ;)

It had nothing to do with the RP bonus in and of itself. My objection was that some participants were to be given access to a potential bonus which, no matter how small, wasn't accessible to other participants. It was purely a matter of fairness.

As to Sel Appa's slightly bizarre argument over United Nations Security Resolution 242, I can only state that it proves his own statement that he's a horrible debater. He could perhaps make half an argument (though not one I would agree with) over the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem on the basis that they have been physically annexed by Israel. However, even the Israeli government doesn't claim the West Bank as part of the Israeli state, so I'm at a loss to explain how an area external to the internationally- and internally-recognised territory of a state can be controlled by that state's armed forces without being in some way 'occupied'. I would kindly suggest to Sel that familiarise himself more closely with the issues to hand. That's my last statement on the issue since this is an inappropriate forum to discuss this. If Sel wishes to discuss it further, he need only TG me.

You can have the ODS (http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gth681k/ns/Official WC38 Rankings.ods), Excel (http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gth681k/ns/Official WC38 Rankings.xls), or even PDF (http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gth681k/ns/Official WC38 Rankings.pdf) if you want it. And remember, you didn't get these from me.

Erm, excuse me, but I just thought I'd take a moment to clarify something for the hosts....

When I wrote that I expected my team to do miserably and get roundly thrashed by all and sundry, well, you see, that was supposed to be RP. It wasn't really supposed to happen. And they certainly weren't supposed to get thrashed 8-1 in their worst qualifying result ever.

(Nor did I expect to see the Holy Empire lose 4-2 to a bunch of nobodies; at least the Archregimancy result was against Bettia)

Just thought I'd clear that one up. And I'd be happy to beat Bettia 16-0 in the return leg, ta muchly! Can you remind me of your bank account details so I can arrange that transfer of funds - so sorry it was late this time. That's not the reason behind the results, is it?

Ah well, it's nice to be recognised for something.

At least the Bettia result fits in with my RP theme this Cup (as indeed noted by Ariddia) - but I'm struggling to think of an RP to explain the Holy Empire Welsh ninja loss to a country whose name I can't even remember. But I'll come up with something.

I appreciate how much work this is (and having done it for two World Cups, I really do appreciate it), but could the hosts please consider adding direct links to the roster thread (where relevant) for each team in the group draw listings in the first post of the RP thread.

It really aids usability of the roster thread for participants as it means you don't have to search through the roster thread for the relevant information.

Is that a Brazilian thing to put an x instead of a -?

I guess it is. Everyone in Brazil uses the x after one team's number of goals scored and before the other's.

There are other different things (although these things happen in other countries too): when putting the time of the goalscorers, it's written that the player scored, for example, on the 20th minute of the second half, instead of writing that he scored on the 65th minute of the game. And putting the number 6 in the shirt of the left-back, instead of number 3.

See here (links for a Brazilian site - note the x used in all the games [if the first link don't have results, try the second link]):

On the traditional side of things, wouldn't the left-back be number 2?

Then again, if you think that's different Caf, in the football team me and my mates are planning on starting, I'd be playing right-back/wing-back (what's that? wing-backs in the English game? never!...maybe that's where we've gone oh so wrong?) wearing 29!

Maybe no one's told you yet, but RPing isn't the be-all-and-end-all. The fact is that scorination is based on random numbers, and when you have random numbers you get random results (only tempered by bonuses and ranks). Fancy you suggesting the hosts are at fault. First time I've seen someone have a whinge even when they're winning. Seriously.

we've had 3 or 4 8-1 or worse results, and a couple of them happened to good teams on the losing end.

The fact is that scorination is based on random numbers, and when you have random numbers you get random results (only tempered by bonuses and ranks). Fancy you suggesting the hosts are at fault. First time I've seen someone have a whinge even when they're winning. Seriously.

No offense, but sometimes I really have to wonder if you completely lack a sense of humor.

For anyone else that missed the point, Qazox's post was pretty solidly tongue-in-cheek.

(And if this is coming off a little harsh, I apologize, as it's a pretty shitty night here in the real world. First time acting as designated driver for two of my friends at the bar, and now I have two passed-out people in the apartment, one of whom keeps kicking the futon he's sleeping on and who has proceeded to vomit on the carpet, which I can't attempt to clean up without vomiting myself. So yeah, I'm not in the best of moods right now.)

That's not exactly my problem, or fault, now is it? Qazox's post sounded whingy to me, and hardly tongue-in-cheek. Perhaps suggesting the hosts were using incorrect data was tongue-in-cheek, fine, but that doesn't change the fact he saw the need to say he was "not complaining, just wondering" when in the same post he said he "shouldn't" be winning only 1-0 (emphasis original)... people can make up their minds for themselves. But don't take your bad luck/bad day in real life out on others, please. Especially when we've got nothing to do with it.

No disruptions from terrorists belonging to the Restoration of True Morality peple today. Imperial Stormtrooper made sure everyone wanted to watch football, and not be an idiot. Instead, recently appointed Grand Chancellor Kevin Durr who replaced John Wohard presented "Princess " medals to the C&M players to commemorate the new Princess nickname and made a passionate speech condemning the Restoration of True Morality as a terrorists. He stood with the Jeruselem FA president and our Princess, standing together united against these people.

I'm not sure how jocular Qazox's post was, but suffice to say the general point is that results are unpredictable. This is a proven scorinator, being used in its regular guise (as opposed to WC37, where it was set up such that results were more unpredictable), and the long-term expectation - and 14 games is enough for that, five might not be - is that the top teams will mostly but not entirely emerge as successful, with RPing likely to help them along the way.

I've been stunned by some of the results. The Archregimancy losing 8-1 to Bettia, especially given the RPing theme of the former, left me howling in laughter for several minutes; Zwangzug losing at home to San Adriano made me wonder if the scorinator was broken; San Adriano being involved in an eight-goal match despite their -5 style modifier made me check that it wasn't shown as +5 (it wasn't, The Holy Empire's +4 cancelled most of it out and then it was just a freak goalfest that comes up sometimes).

Weirdness happens. Heck, Qazox has a bionic team, some would say that's weird enough. Though in the context of Welsh ninjas, mice, Greek letters and monks, maybe it's not...

We've all known that Qaz has been a whiny little bitch from the moment he stepped into World Cup Qualifying. It's always a bad draw giving him a group of death, or too random when he RPs and doesn't beat worse teams, or not random enough because he can never beat better teams, and now he's both RPing and winning and still complaining that he's not winning by enough.

Will it get to the stage where he wins three World Cups in a row and then complain that no-one is able to challenge him?

Frankly, who should even bother to care any more about his thrice-per-cup whines?

Uhm... OK, a few things wrong about your post.

1- I've never whined that I haven't beaten better teams.

2- Compared to some of the other stuff I've seen on this thread and the previous WCDT, My complaining is minimal at best. Over the last 5 Cups, I've only 'WHINED' legitimately once or twice.

I did try and accommodate the unexpected number of San Adriano goals in my (weak by my standards, but I'd had a rough weekend) RP.

But summed up quickly...

Welsh ninja warriors race to 5-0 halftime lead, but are so impressed at Sanadrienese bravery in the face of overwhelming odds that, after a quick chat with the San Adriano coach, they decide to allow the home side to 'lose with honour' and let them score three times in the second half to allow the home lads to keep their honour intact in recognition of that bravery.

I'm not sure which of your nations to send TGs to, so I'll simply ask here. San Adriano is making the most of the World Cup to expand its diplomacy, and the head of State, Princess Serena (a lady in her early 60s now, of part-Wymgani descent) is travelling on State visits to nations San Adriano plays against.

If possible, she'd accompany the Sanadrianese team on a State visit to the Holy Empire, when San Adriano goes to play there. I'd like to know whether the Empire actually receives foreign heads of State on official visits, and if so who would actually meet her there.

She'd probably be accompanied by (amongst others) her son and heir, Crown Prince Mauro (in his mid-30s), and at least one government representative. San Adriano is a democratic parliamentary monarchy, where the Princess' role is purely symbolic.

To be honest, I haven't been checking either nation's TGs much recently, so I hope everyone will forgive me for answering here...

The Holy Empire has never (as far as I can remember) received an official visit from a foreign head of state. The existence of Ordinary Reality rulers don't fit into the Empire's internal ideology of 'a single universal empire - a single universal church'.

The Protocol Office of the Imperial Secretariat of the Purple Inkwell is likely to interpret Princess Serena's visit as part of her team's entourage as the visit of a vassal ruler to the Universal Court; while ISPI is aware of the concept of Ordinary Reality 'nations' they simply don't fit into the Imperial court worldview except as vassal supplicants. Why else would they be making the trip to the Dreamed Realm.

And it's inconceivable that she'd actually get an audience with the Basileus himself; her visit would be like a Kafka novel if that were her intent... layer after layer after layer of Imperial bureaucracy that makes it impossible for her to reach her goal no matter how much it looks like she might be temporarily progressing.

Hmm. Assuming she's able to know of this in advance, I think she'd just stay at home, then. To avoid a diplomatic snubbing. ;) After all, if she can't meet the Basileus, the person she meet would be (from her perspective) lower than she in diplomatic hierarchy, and if that person sees it the opposite way round, diplomatic discomfort would be likely.

If she can be certain that the Holy Empire won't take her absence as an insult (since she's been visiting the other countries the team is playing against), she'll just stay in San Adriano.

This is an old story, but I've only just discovered it, and I love it. :p It was a 1994 football match between Barbados and Grenada. It's from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digicel_Cup#1994_anomaly), but Snopes confirms it's a true story.

Grenada went into the match with a superior goal differential, meaning Barbados needed to win by two goals to progress to the finals. The trouble was caused by an unusual rule which stated that in the event of a game going to sudden death extra time, the winner would be awarded a two goal victory.

Barbados were leading 2-0 until the 83rd minute, when Grenada scored, making it 2-1. Approaching the dying moments, the Barbadians, realizing they had no chance of scoring past Grenada's mass defence, turned around and deliberately scored an own goal to tie the game, which would send it into extra time and give them another half hour to break down the defence. The Grenadians realized what was going on, and attempted to score an own goal, as well, which would put Barbados back in front by one goal and send them out of the competition. However, the Barbados players started defending their opposition's goal to prevent them doing this. During the game's last five minutes, the fans were treated to the incredible sight of Grenada trying to score on either goal. Barbados defended both ends of the pitch, and held off Grenada for the final five minutes, sending the game into extra time. In extra time, Barbados notched the game-winner, and, according to the rules, was awarded a 4-2 victory, which put them through to the next round.

That was hilarious...as far as I'm concerned. Especially because my housekeeper/babysitter(more complex than this) is from Grenada. :)

Wow!!! You have babies?

Oh, you needed just a bit of hosting bid in your life. Well, consider Novapsolu and I happy to provide (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=544357).

If it's not too much trouble though, can we hold the vote rather quickly so we don't have to have this thing over the wonderful series of winter holidays?

He just copied the exact text from the previous vote and pasted it in, leading to references to the Aussie voting system, a WCC Presidential election (oh god help us when's the next one?) as well as a repeal vote.

After this world cup<pedant>I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be after the multiples of three, but the last one followed WC35. Not my call as to whether that should have a ripple effect into the future, but I'm just annoying enough to bring it up. </pedant>

WC37, 38 and 39 is the current President's term. So actually the election is after the next Cup.

from some point up until WC24 - Bedistan
25 26 27 - Starblaydia
28 29 30 - Starblaydia
31 32 33 - Starblaydia
34 35 36 - Bazalonia
37 38 39 - Bazalonia
40 41 21 - TBA

Yes, the last one. It was decided then that the winner would take over following World Cup 36, in spite of the vote coming before that cup. However, as the winners (Baz & Ariddia) were both the incumbents, the point was moot (other than the term going back to the proper length)

If goal difference is to be used to break ties, as stated in your bid thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13130838&postcount=5), then unlike as stated (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13261927&postcount=16), Ad'ihan haven't yet been eliminated, since a win over Tuaim plus a Squorn win over Archreg on MD14 will mean Ad'ihan (currently +14) qualifies over The Archregimancy (currently +10) on GD.
