I just want to get this in writing now....

When the Holy Empire plays Alex Ruined Hallelujah, the Imperial squad of 'your worst nightmare' will consist of three Leonard Cohens, and two each of John Cale, Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, and KD Lang. All of them constantly singing Hallelujah. The Cohens will sing the full 80 verse version.

North Americans, South Americans, Australians, Continental Europeans and Asians (in fact, anyone outside the UK and Ireland) will probably be baffled. I suggest they rummage around YouTube.

On the matter of friendlies, the list below are all confirmed (barring the last two), and will be scored today following an RP cut-off of 1700 UTC.

If I’ve missed any, or got any of these the wrong way round, or if any should be cancelled as a result of a fixture clash, or whatever, I’ll happily retroactively scorinate any further games I receive up until about this time tomorrow, since I was somewhat later doing this than I’d planned…

C&M v Qazox (in Kura-Pelland)
C&M v Kura-Pelland
Taeshan v Jeruselem
Myedvedeya v Taeshan
Sarzonia v Starblaydia (Mike Sarzo Memorial)
Bears Armed v Jeru FC
Secristan v Myedvedeya
West Zirconia v Newmanistan
Newmanistan v Dancougar
Jeruselem v Cassadaigua
Yafor 2 v Cafundéu
Arozza v Secristan
Krytenia v Sarzonia?
Nethertopia v Krytenia?

Looking at the Excel version, there seems to be a slight error: Bears Armed is listed as having played 9 games in the BoF, but in fact we only had 8 matches: 5 in the group stage, QF, SF, Final...
Perhaps whoever compiled the table & did the sums missed the fact that the two groups into which the BoF entrants were divided differed slightly in size, and that we were only in a 6-team group rather than in the [only] 7-team one?
(And I see that Peisandros is also listed as having played 9 games rather than just 8, although I haven't yet checked the other members of our group to see whether their listed numbers of games are incorrect too...)

Yep, I think you're right, I did indeed miss that little issue.

Expect a correction in the next 15 to 20 minutes, and let this be a reminder to you all: use all groups of the same size, or your friendly local KPB maintainer may screw things up, and you really don't want to live with that on your conscience, do you? ;)

"tg" (or "TG") = 'Telegram'.

You've seen 'Telegrams' listed in the menu at the top left-hand corner of your nation's main NS page, right? Well, if you look at another nation's page while you're logged in as your own nation then there'll be a box at the bottom of the page that you can use to send them a message... and that is what these terms refer to...

Just a quick run down of the process.... Scores are generated according to a combination of Random number, KPB's and RP. The weight of each changes depending on the system used to generate scores (A common system is to use NSFS - NationStates Football Scorinator) These scores are posted in the scores thread and then you can respond to it how you wish. As long as it's somehow tenusously linked to the World Cup tournament it's fair game.

Normally whoever goes firsat ties the score in with what happened in the game, or whatever they're RPing to make the story move along, along with some other salient information. That isn't really done in order, but more of a first come-first serve thing. They normally get to name who scored and when (did that). Then the other person if they choose to RP as well gets to put their own spin on what happened. This can agree, be slightly off or completely at loggerheads with what I said happened as long as the score matches. (At least that's what I've seen lately).

Though, to clarify, it would generally be rude to completely ignore what the other RP'er wrote (or his RP instructions).

Just to give novices an idea...

ACCEPTABLE:

FirstRPerstan: "My team won 3-2 after my opponents took an undeserved 2-0 lead, but then had their two star players fairly sent off after dreadful tackles - while their goalkeeper was injured after being attacked by a suicidal seagull. No other incidents of note occurred during or after the match."

SecondRPia: "My team lost 3-2 after taking a glorious 2-0 lead, only to have our two start players sent off by a blind referee after perfectly fair tackles. My opponents claim our goalie was attacked by a seagull, but I demand an investigation of coin throwing by the home support, which I think is a far more likely cause of his injury."

UNACCEPTABLE:

FirstRPerstan: "My team won 3-2 after my opponents took an undeserved 2-0 lead, but then had their two star players fairly sent off after dreadful tackles - while their goalkeeper was injured after being attacked by a suicidal seagull. No other incidents of note occurred during or after the match."

SecondRPia: "My team lost 3-2 after going behind 3-0, though after my opponents' entire midfield was eaten by wandering tigers, we did claw two back. My goalkeeper, who had a fantastic game, even scored from a penalty. Afterwards, we burned down their stadium, killed their children, and stole their women."

Though note that the second version could be acceptable if your nation was known for IC pathological lying, or it was otherwise made clear that the RP was untrue (all match reports are military propaganda, perhaps).

The top 30 teams from the 10 Qualifying Groups go to the World Cup, plus the two hosts automatically.

That's when the World Cup itself begins, you're just in the Qualifying stage now, matey.

The format follows the current FIFA World Cup format.

The first round consists of eight groups of four teams, who play each other once (so every qualifying team plays at least three matches).

The top two teams in each first round group go through to the knockout stages.

Also the IBC (basketball) is having signups now, we get 2 more and we'll have 16, a good number. And at some point within the next 45 days or so, we're probably going to get World Bowl V (American Football) on track, even if it means I have to host it myself.

Yep. It's for all the losers, provided they've RP'ed at least once.

A quick clarification...

The Cup of Harmony is traditionally for nations that don't reach the WC finals, but still contributed to the tournament through roleplay. This rewards non-qualifying activer RPers by giving them not just another tournament to play in, but a small KPB points ranking boost.

The precise definition of the quantity and quality of RP that qualifies a nation for Cup of Harmony participation is, however, entirely at the discretion of the host (or hosts).

It's by no means unknown for CoH hosts to decide that more than one RP or roster is necessary. There have been CoHs where participation was restricted to the 16 most active RPers, rather than every nation to have RP'd.

But either way, I don't think Peisandros is in any danger of missing the CoH if he fails to qualify for the World Cup.

I thought the limit has to do with a certain number of RP points you can get per matchday. And I think that's at the hosts' discretion.

So if you write two RPs for a particular matchday, I *think* you'd only get credit for one. But I'm not a host so I'm probably talking through my arse right now.

I can only say that happened in CoH 35 - people could write as many as they wished - and be credited for them - but there was a points limit. As far as we were concerned, it didn't matter how many posts it took to get to that limit.

I think the only limit on the number of RPs is the one you make on yourself. Of course, there is such a thing as the "quality" of RPs, which I imagine most hosts would prefer over "quantity" (quality = better reading; quantity = more reading).

Furthermore, as far as I am aware, nearly every host uses some formula by which a person can only accrue so many points before RPing any more just becomes SPAM (i.e. not-sot-tasty shred of meat that few people like to eat). So if you write one really super-duper RP and the host decides to give max points for that super-duper RP, writing another super-duper RP in the same time period does nothing (although you'd have to ask what sort of time you have to be able to write all of this super-duper non-sense). On the contrary, writing ten thousand super-crappy RPs might force the hosts to put a RP moratorium on your Jolt account, in addition to adding ten thousand super-crappy RP points. Of course, some people also use a semi-logrithmic scale of adding additional points, such that the writing two good RPs is better than writing just one good RP, even though individually the two are worth less than the first.

Example of schemes:

One super-duper RP
1 **** RP = Max points (10)

Two super-duper RPs
1 **** RP + another **** RP = Max Points (10)

One super-crappy RP
1 () RP = () Points...

Ten thousand super-crappy RPs
1 () RP + 1 () RP + 1 () RP ... (10,000) ... 1 () RP = 10,000 () Points (maybe max points if they're kind).

One good RP
1 *** RP = Good Points (5)

Two good RPs
1 *** RP + 1 *** RP = Good Points (7)

Hopefully, this clarifies the issue at hand. If not, drink ten shots of vodka/gin/whiskey and it will.

*hopes that this doesn't go on about subjective versus objective reading of RPs*

So if you write two RPs for a particular matchday, I *think* you'd only get credit for one. But I'm not a host so I'm probably talking through my arse right now.

For the record, we're treating all RPs within the given twenty-fourish hours as one RP - a good effort is scored accordingly, regardless of whether it's one plot/article/etcetera spread over half a dozen posts or several different Things in one long post, or anything in between. There is a maximum bonus, but I personally can't think of too many cases where I'd have been inclined to give a higher bonus than that, given the option, so don’t worry about writing too much from that point of view. Only for your long-term sanity. And the rest of ours’, in some cases...

On the heels of my announcement in the RP thread, a few people have wondered what to do about their domestic players playing in the Newmanistan Premier League. Since I will no longer be scorinating another season, you can have all of your players return to their home country, or you can say they continue to play here if you want. The league will still exist, it just won't on here as far as seeing its results.

Also, I encourage any nation with interest in Newmanistanian players that are not already playing overseas to send transfer offers to do so via telegram, and they will go. In case of multiple offers for one player, I will select the one that I think puts the players in the best situation.

As I understand it, these programs are randomly generated scores based on rankings, RP bonuses and other stuff. I've seen World Cups that have been a lot more random than this one has been.

I can't explain why it is that Sarzonia's doing a little better than Rymeria even though both are unranked teams and Sarzonia played the world's number one ranked team. Unless the fact it played two friendlies before the World Cup proper began helped its RP bonus a little tiny bit.

Seriuosly though, Draistania, it varies from cup to cup as to how 'good/bad' a new team does. Some qualify 1st time out (ie: Quakmybush) while others struggle for a few cups before making the WC (ie: Qazox and many others). Some cups tend to be favorable to a good RPing new nation, while others tend to treat all newcomers like carp.

While only having a team of part time amateurs (unemployed slobs), we have the ambition to crawl out of the gutter and into the light.

Hey, from what I've read in previous posts, the next sign-up thread for the World Cup (WC45), should be coming out in a couple of weeks. If you don't see it on the forum, it'll be announced in this thread :)

GOD DAMN YOU BOSTOPIA!
And the little scorinator fairy that gave me a 0-0 tie with a team that I destroyed 5-0 on the road, whose RP's make Taeshan's seem like Daehans, or Dancougar's, which ruined my perfection, and giving those damn Bostopians the 1st qualifer.

So it wasn't you that sent those flowers...

My word of advice to people contemplating leaving:

If you try, you have an approximate 50/50 chance of failing or succeeding. Combine that with hard work, random luck, and some speedy ranks that say you're at the bottom of the world, you might say that's now 1 in 6,000,000,000 chances of success.

But here's the grim statistic - if you never try, you will never succeed (of course, you relativists may say that you'll never fail either, but if progress is measured by success, then failure really doesn't matter). And if you're judging your level of enjoyment by how well your team is doing, then you're playing the wrong game. If you judge the winner by who wins the World Cup, then there's only one "winner"; but if you judge by the commitment and quality of interaction between different peoples - humourously, seriously, or otherwise - then anyone who really tries to have fun (ignoring that 21-0 drubbing that you just had) is a winner.

Of course, if you're begged for life IRL, then by all means prioritize and get out while you still can! But if you're going to be on NS and you're leaving because you're not having fun - you perhaps should evaluate what you mean by "fun" and judge accordingly.

The only time mine gets updated is when I win something, then promptly forget about it.

Regarding success, though, for me a success is being involved in something that would make an interesting section on my national team's (featured, mwah-ha!) NSwiki article (http://www.nswiki.net/index.php?title=Starblaydia_national_football_team). WC44 Qualifying, for instance, where we've performed so abysmally that we're having to grind out 1-0 home wins against teams ranked in the 80s, is therefore regarded as a success by me, just not by my Football Association.

Thanks yous guys, it's nice to know that the article about an imaginary football team that takes up way too much of my work and free time is the best there is!

I'm only on nationstates still because of the World Cup, even after I 'quit' after WC34 I still couldn't simply leave it be, because I hated the idea of my national football team just... stopping. Two massive excel files that document 120 (so far) years of 300+ players, 3,000+ goals and a dozen+ championships are the private testament to those imaginary teams, while the wiki article is the for public record.

The person who knocked you out of the World Lacrosse Championships may be one of the last people you want to listen to right now, but you really shouldn't quit the World Cup just because you're not winning as much as you'd like. I know for me I just enter these things and have fun with it because I like reading the RPs and I just want us to be a part of it in some capacity. There are some people on this forum who make me think they could write professionally the stuff is so good. I don't know if we will ever qualify but I will probably always sign up as long as I have a nation just for the enjoyment of it.

Agreed. Some of the stories on here are so entertaining, I wouldn't be bothered if both of my current nations involved were on the way to win-draw-loss records of 0-0-14. Actually, I'm a freelance writer for a newspaper in my area. I used to be the managing editor of a weekly newspaper close by.

The last time I took part in this, I was far more consumed with wins, losses or draws that I should have been. Considering the fact that I've seen much more stuff in RL than I would like, I now have a better perspective on it. This is a game within a game. Compared to facing cancer and now unemployment, this is way down on my list of stressors.

I agree with Kry somewhat. I like writing RPs that make people laugh etc, and have started deleting any RPs I write that I don't find funny before posting them and starting over. Those RPs make me feel hollow and empty and ever so icky for forcing one out.

However, on the other side, - having been here since WC29 - I'd sure love to win the WC eventually lol. But would I want to win it suffering a major case of RP burnout/can't be bothered to RP? I'm not sure. Ask me how I feel RPwise if I ever get to a final!

I led the group with two matches to go. I think I only needed one point in the final two matches, one of whom only started "RPing" just before my match against him. Both were away to the two highest ranked teams in my group. I lost both 0:2. Ended up in the Cup of Harmony.

Classic as in Aquemini, ATLiens, and Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzic. So, basically...yes.

True. I was expecting Sarzonia to be playing for pride by now...

But if I'd beaten O Ale Ale away ... eh, who am I kidding? I'd still have to beat Valanora away to get in AND get help. Those draws to Taeshan and West Zirconia at home didn't help matters...

Beyond the statistical unlikelihood of such an event, a win for you does mean that no matter how poorly I play against O Ale Ale, I qualify on top of the group :D

Ah, I love that song, but I hate it. Been cockblocked by that song on so many occasions in various clubs up and down the land *sighs* memories...

I'm back from North America.

I'll get the WC45 signup thread started this weekend (UK time), preferably Saturday (vry jetlagged right now - I hate overnight trans-Atlantic flights).

I should be RPing more actively from now on, too - always assuming my teams haven't collapsed in the last 3-4 days.

And they haven't - they're both through, currently both narrowly top of their groups.

Believe me, they haven't. Bloody 6-1...

Those draws didnt help you huh. How do you i think i feel. Im on my way to going back to the CoH. After winning it to there very team that will most likely knock me out.

I won't be in world cup 45. Good day.

(I should have done this a long time ago)
