As such, I will be away from NS for most or all of the time period from tomorrow night through next weekend.

Semi-official vote-collector announcement

Per our current president (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14591288&postcount=76), the WCC presidential election voting period concluded about 100 minutes ago.

Unfortunately, Daehanjeiguk, your vote was received about 40 minutes after the deadline and thus I cannot count it.

So without further ado, I present...the results.

The Archregimancy - 9
Starblaydia - 10
Zwangzug - 0

And so, pending verification by our current president, Starblaydia will take over the presidency for World Cups 46 through 48, with the Archregimancy continuing in the role of vice-president.

Presidential Announcement

I hereby confirm the results of the election, with sincere thanks to Vephrall for collating the votes, and congratulations to Star for winning the vote.

And it's just as well I didn't vote for myself, because that would have precipitated a second round with no obvious tie-breaker had the second round also ended in a tie.

To be honest, losing comes as something of a relief; acting as WCC president has severely cut into my RP time.

I'll formalise the Cup of Harmony voting tomorrow.

For the record, there was an error in the scorination of group 5 (and only group 5) that resulted in the wrong matches being scorinated; these were immediately replaced with the correct matches.

I congratulate Starblaydia for his return to the WCC presidency, and I'm gratified to have voted for the winner.

HOWEVER, I also congratulate The Archregimancy for his even-handed tenure as president. Even though we ultimately disagreed on the EWCC reforms issue, I respect the way he conducted himself and steered two factions through the turmoil.

Perhaps now he can get back to calling the Stars a bunch of heretics and heathens. :D

Hint: Before them (admittedly this is going back a ways) it was me, from WCs 25-33.

Thanks for the congrats everyone. I'll see what I can come up with for a controversy-free, boredom-lite Presidency to carry on in generally the same way as Arch, but with that little purple twist.

I certainly wish you a more controversy-free tenure than I had!

Between the (self-inflicted) NS2 sign-up controversy, the EWCC reform vote, and the recent Taeshan issue, I've had enough controversy to last me a while.

My last act other than arranging those host votes remaining to me will be - probably tomorrow - the posting of Han's collation of the WCC rules.

Depends on the country. In the UK, live English league football is on Sky (satellite channel); so is live NI football (very occasionally). The FA Cup is shown on Setanta (satellite again - oh, and they also get the SPL) and ITV (free-to-air). ITV and Setanta also share England's internationals, with Wales/Scotland/NI/ROI being shown on Sky. ITV and Sky share the Champion's League, and the UEFA Cup gets shown on ITV and Five (terrestrial; think The CW with a smaller budget). La Liga gets shown on Sky; Channel 4 (terrestrial again) used to show live Serie A games but they don't any more.

The BBC get highlights of league football in England and Scotland, and I think they get the League Cup next year, too.

Basically, here in Britain, football, cricket, and rugby get the same sort of coverage as, say, the NFL, MLB and NBA in the States.

It's amazing how much of that is on satellite. And that between Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta not having to split North American rights as hard as they do in England, we can get as many games here as in England. (Now if I could afford digital cable.)

Serie A? Can't think there'd be a big audience for that, even in Italy.

It's a pain in the a**e (also: wallet) is what it is. That's monthly subscriptions to two satellite packages...though at least ITV, C4 and Five are free.

Also, Serie A was mainly due to the "Gazza factor" (Lazio were on a lot). Once he bogged off to Rangers, people were far less interested.

C4’s Gazzetta Football Italia, now there was a show. The Five version was (is? might still be going) just a pale imitation of what it used to be. Bit like Michael Jackson I guess . . .

Here in Brazil the Brazilian league (or cup, or state competition) is on two free channels (Globo and Bandeirantes) - (but every the same game in both channels, and just one per matchday - this means: one Wednesdays 21:45 and one Sundays 16:00). Bandeirantes also show the Italian and English leagues (Saturdays and Sundays, 1 game per day [iirc, there are some special occasions where they show 2), and I'm not sure if they have shown the Spanish at some time (maybe only special games... guess not). The UEFA Champions League is available in Record (free too - but only Wednesday games, they choose 1 of them), also the UEFA Cup final (and some Milan games this year).

The satellite channels show the games that the free channels doesn't show, basically. (So, if you want to see a Corinthians game but Globo is showing Palmeiras, you'd need a satellite channel to see the Corinthians game. Or if you want to see a Tuesday UCL game, or another Wednesday game [example: this week Record showed Manchester United x Internazionale, so the other Wednesday games would be only available via satellite channels...]).

Here only football gets media coverage (of course on the free channels)... the other sports are left abandoned (sometimes, just sometimes, Globo shows games of volleyball, on Sunday mornings).

Might as well tell what happens in Canada:

As there is no real Canadian league per-se, there is no right for any national league. Except for the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, who gets shown on CBC (For the Toronto FC matches), CBC Bold (Every match of the competition) and Radio-Canada (the French channel of the CBC, who show the Impact de Montréal matches). For the MLS, CBC and The Score hold the rights to the Toronto FC matches. For USL-1, Radio-Canada holds the rights to some Impact de Montréal matches, but they're mainly to fill a boring summer TV season. In fall, most games are shown on delay at 23:00 EST. For the Whitecaps, I don't know, really.

TSN and RDS (the French equivalent of TSN) have the rights to the UEFA Champions League. Usually, they simulcast it from the ESPN broadcast, except RDS use their own commentators, as there is no proper French commentators. Two matches per day weekly, except that they don't necessarily both show the same game (both channels are independent, even if they're both owned by CTVGlobeMedia and ESPN).

Finally, Rogers Sportsnet (yes, LE: those who can't show a scorebug properly ;) ) holds the rights to the Canadian NT (both men and women) matches on TV. Sadly, they don't tend to play friendlies often, and when they do, it's against third division Norwegian teams. Not very effective, eh?

But soccer doesn't enjoy the same coverage as ice hockey here. Here, ice hockey's coverage is the same as MLB, NBA and NFL together in the USA. Even in the summer, the sports shows will speak of another sport for 5 minutes max until someone brings a hockey topic. I mean: ice hockey might be my favourite sport, but cut some slack, please.

How do you think I feel about having two goalless draws against the No. 118-ranked team in the world? I thought I should have at least won one of the matches.

I will say the way the results have borne out fit more into the way I've planned to RP Sarzonia's comeback to the international footballing scene than World Cup XLIV's. And the fifth highest ranked side finishing fifth in the group really shouldn't complain about final placing.

At least you've qualified before, and you had a nice run last Cup with Kosovoe. I'm not exactly shedding a tear. Plus, Group 2 was a highly active group with Daehanjeiguk, Greal, Candelaria and Cassadaigua (the one you thought you were entitled to a win against) all RP'ing daily from what I saw.

Now we can be each other's main competition in the CoH yet again.

Congrats to Cassadaigua too, this Cup's Cinderella.

Its not that i lost to them and of course ive lost to many other teams i shouldnt have such as PANUUL a few cups ago. Its just that i actually did it at a practical 100 max for Tae and about a couple hundred times as many for K and i dont qualify. Last time i may have rped once and K qualed. Its just im sick of these random games were things out of the total blue happen like the loss against Bushdome and the McLaughin tie and the thing with Tae were wetied someone we should hav beaten. It seems to random. If at half way its a 5 horse race the five horses shouldnt be falling to a 8th horse way behind.

A nation that only just failed to qualify for the World Cup would be preferred.

You're not getting the point. When the World Cup began, people only RP'd for fun. No RP bonus or anything, and if there was any it was never significant enough until around the time of the KPBs. It should never be RP = win, and it currently isn't. People should RP because they want to, not because they want an RP bonus. At any rate, it's also not true that maxing out RP bonus = win.

I never thought I'd say I agree with LE, but I do.

A team that RPs consistently and well normally has a better chance to win a random match than does a similar team that does not RP. However, an RP does not guarantee victory, nor should it.

In another time, I would have bitched about the results I got in this World Cup (a home draw against the world's No. 118 team? Are you kidding?!), but I now realise this is a game within a game. I've also had a lot of things happen over the years since I first started playing NS, stopped and started again that have made me realise just how unimportant this game is compared to real life travails.

I also have more of an interest in telling the stories behind a team that's trying to return to the ranks of the world's best after a long absence. For Sarzonia, the previous World Cup became a story about a team that was in the running for a shock World Cup bid. This World Cup's Sarzonia is more about an inconsistent team that played its best football when it was too late. But it fit more into my storytelling idea of a team that could go from a lifeless draw against a team over 60 spots below it in the rankings to an inspired performance in a draw against a team over 50 spots ahead of it.

One thing Star told me once or twice about my RPs is that I often use the same pattern (a journalist's newspaper story) to write them. I decided I wanted to focus more on the emotions, the sights and sounds of a team after a match or prior to a match than on Player X scoring a goal or Player Y drawing a foul, and vary my approach.

Taeshan, perhaps you could take a player or a coach and delve into his background. Explore what makes him tick, why he plays the way he does. Or perhaps you could take things from the perspective of a fan or a group of supporters in the stands. There are a number of ways you can vary your approach to roleplaying. But in the end, this should be about having fun telling a story and seeing where the dice end up. *inside joke for the pre-KPBers out there.* ;)

Just an FYI to those people making their choices;

I will be out for this next weekend (Mar 20, 21) away for a conference. As such, if confirmed for the CoH host, matches would not be able to start until Sunday evening (USA)/Monday morning (Asia)/midnight (Europe). That said, if confirmed, we will make arrangements so that the invitations, the group draw, and such will be performed before then so that the only thing to do by Monday will be the matches. This is just to get a tentative starting date for people to start preparing, and also for the EWCC voters, should they feel that Monday is too late for the CoH to start.

This post will be added into the CoH Bid thread for later reference.

I would like to propose a rule:

The 1st placed team from a qualifing group CANNOT be placed in a World Cup group with any other qualifer from the same qualifying group.

OOCish reason: This is the 5th or 6th time I have had a 3rd match with a team I have previously played in qualifiers, and I'm not the only one who has this happen to them multiple times.

ICish Reason: In the RL World Cup (and i know, this isn't the RL World Cup...) there is anvoidance policy in place. Meaning teams from the same Continental Association, (NS equiv: Qualifying group), are not placed together, excepting UEFA (for obvious reasons).

My sincere apologies.

It's okay. We're also sorry that you gave the bid to insane people :p.

Anyway, since the weekend is nearing, I'd like to make a request of people. In the bid, we stated that the KPB ranks to be used would be post-qualifying. AS such, there isn't any such compilation of those post-qualifying ranks. Having no knowledge of how to change it (I could learn...) and lacking the time to do it, would someone please update the ranks for post-qualifying?

Additionally, I'd just like to note that since we received no further requests to reduce the reduction factor of RP scores (from 50% to 75% retained), we will be using 50% as stated in the bid.

And I'd like to thank Newmanistan and Secirstan for not making this a rubber-stamp affair; I do wish them luck in their future bids. And I'd like to thank those who voted for us, and I'd like to thank Peisandros for volunteering to co-host with me (who's more insane? The insane guy? Or the guy working with the insane guy? :p).

OK.

Due a very serious RL issue, I'm not going to be on Jolt consistantly for the near future.

So effective on this upcoming Tuesday, I will not have consistant internet access.

I don't know when I will be back on Jolt Full-time, hopefully soon though it is very doubtful, but for the foreseeable future, I (and to the same extent, Green wombat and Prux) will not be participating in any upcoming tourneys or events. We will attempt to RP in the events we are currently are in, but don't be suprised if none of us do.

And to answer a couple of questions:

NO I'm not going to jail
NO I'm not battling an illness.
NO I'm not dying.
YES I am moving.

Hmm... reminds me of that episode of Doug, where Skeeter is all like, "Oh man... I'm MOVING." And the whole episode is filled with angst, and at the end, it turns out Skeeter was just getting a new bedroom in their finished basement.

For those keeping score, this is Dancougar referencing an American cartoon!

No failed attempt at a joke that was originally intended not to be a somewhat racist joke was ever put in this spot. Obviously if you would read my former posts you would of course know that not in any way am i a racist or do i believe that there is anybody inferior to my person. The Germans were jerks at that time in history and any future telling of how stupid this original post was shall note that it was not an intentional happening.

Qazox, answering your OOC comment in the RP thread: yes, I am using the home kits of both teams. But why is this weird? Away kits are used if the teams have kits with similar colours, which could lead to confusion when identifying the players, which clearly is not the case (Cafundéu black and Qazox white).

Now, if you really wanted to see your team with the gold kit instead of the white, I can even arrange this, just tell me. But, for me, I did no mistake.

Actually, it was the convergence of Pisces in Orion at the 36th degree, combined with that awkward interval between swimming the Atlantian Oceanian waters in a duck-suit and the absence of mechanical assistance from odd irregular bodies.

Your astrology charts show that dropping a nuke on Bostopia is your best bet to progressing to the next round. To win the group, you'll also have to dump Arroza's complete stock of rubber chickens along with the nuke, offering the irradiated dump as sacrifice to the heathen gods.

One point that could matter is the relative rate at which time flows in our two nations: Bears Armed is on 2 years per World Cup cycle, what's the situation for Dancougar?

I've been making an effort to get onto a four year cycle that looks something like this:

Year 0 Summer: World Cup, Cup of Harmony
Year 0 Fall - Year 1 Spring: College football competition/D-League Apertura/TQCC/SBCC/GC/IUCC
Year 1 Fall - Year 2 Spring: College football classification/D-League Clausura
Year 2 Summer: Di Bradini, Oxen Cup, or whatever
Year 2 Fall - Year 3 Spring: College football competition/D-League Apertura/TQCC/SBCC/GC/IUCC
Year 3 Summer: Baptism of Fire
Year 3 Fall - Year 4 Spring: College football classification/D-League Clausura/World Cup qualification
Year 4 Summer: World Cup, Cup of Harmony

Although I think the first time I used this I screwed it up anyway. Thanks to the miracle of fluid time, someone from Bears Armed could come to Dancougar and age at half the rate relative to the rest of the population. (Or is it that we mature twice as fast? *reads posts about giant robots* Okay, no, that's a lie.)

You think that's awkward? I used to use one year between World Cups as my timeline. Now I use real time.

So instead of a 120-something year old goalkeeper coach who helped win World Cup XXII, he's in his forties.

My calendar has the World Cup finals in the summer of each odd year and the World Cup qualifiers on each even year. That way the various club competitions can start right after the World Cup, start again a little ways into qualifying for the next WC, and end right before the finals begin. All of my other sports just kinda work their way around this calendar.

Well as the Cup has only been successfully defended about five times in forty-odd attempts, that's nothing spectacular. Here's to a AIF/Valanora Final so at least one Starblaydi has something to properly celebrate.

Braz, Rejis, Bedi, Az-cz & Valanora defended it, iirc, but there's probably someone else too (not that I can be bothered to wiki it, hehe).

I am forever resigned to merely being the break-bumpers either side of other people's successful title defences:

Starblaydia (25), Bedistan (26,27), Starblaydia (28)
Starblaydia (41), Valanora (42,43), Starblaydia (44)

Well, it's better than not winning any cups!

Thanks to the miracle of fluid time, someone from Bears Armed could come to Dancougar and age at half the rate relative to the rest of the population. (Or is it that we mature twice as fast? *reads posts about giant robots* Okay, no, that's a lie.)But does 'fluid time' really work like that? Different rates in different lands, sure, but different rates for people who are actually working together? I just don't see it, unless she'd be living -- and therefore moving -- at only half the speed of the locals which would sort-of ruin her usefulness on the football field...

Hr'rmm, how long is the Soccer season in Dancougar, anyway? I suppose psending part of the year there, and the rest at home, would reduce the discrepancy in ageing between the player and her friends & relatives a bit...

It really works however people want it to work. The Theory of NationStates Relativity, after all, states "Meh." As for the season, it's set up to be 34 games played between August and May.

Or you could go down the Simeone Di Bradini route, in which the 120-something year old becomes immortal and simply looks like he's in his forties.

Much more realistic.
Or Rameses Niblick III...who's been reporting on the World Cup since, well, since before he was Rameses Niblick III. WC22, I believe.

Is the fact that I still remember what Rami Niblick's original name was a sign that I've been here too long? :p

Bears Armed, couldn't you just have her age at whatever rate you feel like? Ultimately you're in charge of the character, right?

Only if you can tell me why the name was changed.

And link the original name to that of the Krytenian capital.

In fact, I wonder if any of you can come up with that...

@Bears Armed:

You could just have a different method of chronology.

1 day in Bears Armed = 1 year in Randomn00bistein?
