Nice to see that not everyone's forgotten the existence of the Monastic Republic in the current flurry of Dreamed Realm-free friendly invitations.
For the record, there is no official adjective for a resident of the Archregimancy as the Archregimancy doesn't have citizens. Any monks from countries other than the Holy Empire are automatically granted mandatory Imperial citizenship, though they're free to maintain citizenship of their home country (always assuming, of course, that said country has a formal citizenship).
So in this case, Fr. Innocent is 'an Ariddian monk of the Archregimancy'.

To allow that is like saying that with a little RP work, Vephrall could have inherited Bedistan's ranking points, Ad'ihan could have gained LE's , and that I could have transferred my points to Novapsolu.
I submit that Valanora should be treated as a separate entity.

If Valanora is actually signed up itself as host that'd be a different matter.
Considering that:
a) He's been referring to himself as Valanora for at least the previous cup, if not before, while using the ranking/guise of ESF
b) Valanora does, in fact, seem to exist, as the request is for TGs to go to Valanora, not ESF
c) CH and AIF's situations don't really apply here, as they retained their nations, yet have gone by their first part. (i.e. the full NS name of the nation known as UCS or CH on here is "The Unified Capitalizt States of Commerce Heights", as AIF, in going by The Holy Empire is in full: "The Holy Empire of Alasdair I Frosticus"). Heck, even TLC used to refer to himself as The Allied States at times, as in "The Allied States of The Lowland Clans". if A and B above are both accurate, which I believe they are, then this is a different case than those.
That said, I'll admit I'm not exactly on a crusade here; it just seemed inaccurate, not to mention even more confusing than CH's situation (though the New Manhattan forum moniker isn't his fault).
If this about me using Valanora to recieve TGs, the only reason I requested for the TGs to be sent to Valanora is because my TG box with ESF is nearly full and it has information that I need and don't want deleted by an influx of TGs that could go to an account that have none.
Somebody should explain things so we don't have confusion about this going into the WC. Is this another Yafor 2/The Gupta Dynasty situation or what?
Well if people actually READ my posts back two Cups ago, then they would know what the situation is. As such, I'll explain it again.
Valanora is an IC government that rules over the countries of Vyinta, Elves Security Forces, Assegai Developments, and Turruth Gordur. The former both being nations of mine, who this was done for regional board RP purposes. The latter are nations of a friend of mine who decided to quit the WC but wanted his players to continue on. I merely created the account on NS for the purposes of my region board, as it is required.
Hopefully this clears up any confusion and will put the issue to rest.
Vephrall
27-01-2008, 04:44
To allow that is like saying that with a little RP work, Vephrall could have inherited Bedistan's ranking points
Well...
(a) Vephrall has absolutely no IC connection to Bedistan whatsoever, apart from the fact that the current assistant manager of the national football team played on the last few Bedistani national squads. The Valanora situation has an IC basis.
(b) It's irrelevant anyway, as Bedistan had already fallen to 0 KPB points by the time Vephrall arrived on the scene. :p

I think we should just split ENGLISH into 3 separate languanges: BRITISH, AMERICAN, AND CANUCK.
That way we all can keep our wierd versions of English, w/out anyone claiming this way is better.
Also a question for those of you across the pond. why is spelling COLOUR with a U easier than COLOR? You're wasting you pens and pencils out faster that way!!! And that Zed thing.... why isn't your alphabet pronounced this way then:

H

Languages are rarely consistent between nations. For example, as someone who learned my French in Belgium, I will always say 'nonante' instead of 'quatre-vingt dix'. I would imagine that Cafundeu can provide us with any number of differences between Portuguese in Brazil and Portugal. Our resident Korean could probably comment on the differences between Korean as spoken in Pyongyang and Seoul. I'm personally well placed to comment on the differences between UK, US, and Australian English since I've lived in all three countries; that they exist has never stopped me from communicating with anyone.
Can I gently suggest that instead of pointless irrelevant carping over linguistic differences - none of which, I regret, is doing much to increase the reputations of either Sel Appa or Qazox - agree to disagree over spellings, and return the focus of this thread to the subject that it's actually supposed to be about. This is worse than the past attempts to turn this thread into a baseball discussion.
Aye, and we wonder why people aren't signing up anymore.
Quite.
I'm really getting grumpy these days, aren't I?
Incidentally, I'm likely to be in Brussels for part of World Cup 39, and this may impact my ability to RP for a few days around the 16th Feb.

Yes, there are so many of them. And some of the differences between Brazilian Portuguese and the Portuguese of Portugal (it'd be strange to say "Portuguese Portuguese") can lead to some funny and/or strange situations.
In football, for example, if you want to say that the defender "pulled the shirt of the attacker".
In Brazil, you say: "O defensor puxou a camisa do atacante".
In Portugal, you'd say: "O defensor puxou a camisola do avançado".
The interesting fact is that, in Brazil, the word camisola means nightgown, not shirt.
But there are differences in the language even between the regions here in Brazil. The most used words to refer to something in the São Paulo state, for example, is different than the ones in other states, as Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Rio Grande do Sul, Ceará, Pará, etc...

What is the influence of Spanish (not Portugese) in Brazil?
There is a big influence in the southern states of the country (Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), due to the contact with Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. But, in the other states of the country, the influence is very small (indigenous and African languages have more influence in the country, and Italian has some [due to the huge amount of Italian immigrants]).
Most people here think that it's easy to understand Spanish because of the similarities with Portuguese. In fact, you can understand many things, but sometimes this is far from easy (and can lead to funny/embarassing situations too). And, when a Brazilian tries to speak Spanish without knowing it, he ends speaking a "different" language called Portunhol, a "mix" of the two languages (it became more famous when Wanderley Luxemburgo was the coach of Real Madrid, as he didn't speak Spanish).

The Quick and Dirty Guide to IRC
The first thing you're going to need is an IRC client. I use XChat (http://www.xchat.org), but I've also found ChatZilla (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16) to be quite good (and as a bonus, ChatZilla just plugs right into Firefox, making installation trivial if you use that as your browser of choice). Both of those should work on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.
After you've installed the client, start it up. (In the case of ChatZilla, I believe you'll find it in Tools > Add-ons on the menu bar in Firefox.)
In the case of XChat, you'll be presented with a list of common IRC networks. Unfortunately, the network our channel is on is not in this list, so you'll need to add it. The server is irc.esper.net. Leave all options set to the default and click Close. You'll be back at the network list screen - now choose a nickname (what you'll be shown as in the channel, nation name preferred) and username (just use the same thing, for simplicity's sake). Then click Connect.
On other clients, after starting it up, simply typing /server irc.esper.net should suffice. After you're connected to the server, type /nick <NationName> (in my case, it would be /nick Vephrall).
Once you've connected to the server (and changed nick if necessary), type /join #nssport. And that's it!
When you're ready to leave, just type /quit.
And that should be enough to get you in. :)

Is it true that Africans are considered "white" in Brazil even if it's diffused like by 15 out of 16 great-great-grandparents?
I didn't clearly understand your question, but I'll write something about this to see if it can solve your doubt.
In the Brazilian census or in common surveys, a person has freedom to say to which ethnic group does it belong. This is a complicated situation, because, due to a lamentable racism, that happens even between black people, some black people claim to be white, when of course it isn't the case.
One of the main targets of the current government here is the racial equality, as the black and indigenous people usually suffer with prejudice and/or lack of education (caused mostly by financial problems). This lead to the use of affirmative action programs here that are put in action through quotas for the minorities, something that causes a lot of controversy here (a famous example is the quotas in public universities [that are usually the best of the country] for black people, indigenous and, especially for students coming from public schools [in basic education, the public schools are usually the worst]). The freedom given to a person to say its own ethnic group causes problems in this area.

1. Go to http://www.esper.net/
2. Click the "Chat Now" button in the top right. Wait for the chat box to load (you'll know it when you see it)
3. Type your nation name in the box in the bottom right. Hit enter.
4. Type /join #nssport in the box in the bottom center.

Edit for the record: And it might be starting about now!
Edit for World Cup 42: If you don't have Java, there should be a link to the CGI-IRC page from the "Chat Now" page. Also, the chat box sometimes loads halfway for me, so if things don't register immediately when you do step 3 or 4, wait a minute or two and it usually finishes up.

Yes. The fact that people use to say that racism in Brazil is less strong than in other countries is that it usually don't have violence involved, and that most African traditions are respected here. But the prejudice exists.

A World Cup has much more participants than a BoF, Sel. I TGed everyone when I hosted the BoF, but a World Cup is a different case (I didn't do it in WC36 and, since I started participating in the WC, I haven't received TGs about it).

Again, I'll repeat my past advice to you: try typing less and thinking more.
If no one agrees with you, and everyone criticises you, try taking a gentle pause to consider why that might be the case instead of constantly trying to justify yourself.

I don't know about the rest of you, but personally, I'd like to see it return to this way. It helps build up the drama and gives people more time to plan out RPs, especially if they're working together on a RPed story line.
1) yeah i pretty much do what Southern Northland said when it comes to keeping an eye on the threads for the cup's start for the same reason. only takes about a minute or so to pop in quick to look.
2) from 2/6 thru 2/13 i probably won't be able to post much of anything due to RL so Tynelia and Jariss will be silent on the RP front for that stretch. then again Tynelia historically seems to do better when i don't RP anyway ;)

I think we need to be very careful about criticising RP styles in this or any other thread.
There may be any number of reasons why some nations choose certain styles over others. We should also be aware that given the broad demographic of participants, not every nation may be able to - or would want to - engage in long satirical digressions or bastardisations of the poetry of 20th-century Irish poets. If Taeshan or Hopeless SC currently have a more straightforward approach to their RPs, then we should embrace the fact that they're participating in the current tournament in the hope that coming tournaments will see an expanded level of participation rather than implicitly or explicitly criticise their style. We don't want to discourage participation by demeaning RP contributions.
From that perspective, I'm slightly disappointed that one of our hosts has seen fit to criticise the RPing style of a WC participant.
Hopeless SC's apparent complaint (which, frowny face aside, was fairly jokey) is an old one, and a standard response along the lines of 'it's just random numbers' would surely have been more appropriate than criticising his RP style, especially given the subjective nature of judging RP content and the age-old dispute in this thread (including its predecessor) over how important RPs should be.
There's also the danger that a host criticising RPs could be seen as partial in judging the subjective nature of RP quality, and as preferring a particular RP style.
By all means criticise idiotic things that a nation might say in the discussion thread, but criticising RP style? Unless a nation is clearly being gratuitously offensive and disruptive - which isn't the case here - that's very slippery ground indeed.

I would suggest that you and me have a conversation on IRC or through TG if you feel that way Reg.
Reg,
While I understand and sort of agree I also think it's fair to point out that neither Hopeless nor Taeshan should get much of any RP bonus. I don't think ESF's tone was out of line and those RPs are poor. It's not a question of style in any way, it's a question of effort. And let's be honest the hosts are subjective in grading RPs and that's their right. It's one of the reasons to host. So long as they're not being biased in favor or against certain teams on other issues I have no problem with that.

Reg,
While I understand and sort of agree I also think it's fair to point out that neither Hopeless nor Taeshan should get much of any RP bonus.
There are several separate issues here.
One issue is a matter of whether hosts are subjective in grading RPs. Of course they are, and they every right to to so. Given my past hosting, it would be hypocritical for me to suggest otherwise.
A second issue is whether everyone is capable of making the same effort. Clearly they aren't, which is why I'm uncomfortable with commenting on RP quality (as opposed to content). Surely the important thing is that Taeshan, for example, is enjoying himself?
A third issue is whether hosts should comment on other nation's RP quality in this thread. And clearly, based on my previous comments, I have concerns here (hosts defending themselves against unwarranted criticism is a different issue, and one where I think they have every right to robustly respond).
ESF shouldn't think I'm desperately upset with him, or up in arms, or accusing him of bias, or anything like that. I just think it's the sort of issue where hosts need to be careful because of the potential resulting pitfalls.

Speaking of RP's - Han, I was reading your one where you said "You remember the weird general who ran around the streets of Casari hunting commies in a tank all night? That's Bostopia." I had to stop myself from guffawing in work time (also, he's a Field Marshal, but no biggie, I won't even try and pretend I know everything about your country :))
Oh, and the Emperor's only back to play in the team representing the Bostopia Tourist Board against other people trying to sponsor the Bazalopes, not the national team. Though you have given me an idea *evil laugh*
Also, I promise I won't let the WC RP thread dissolve into Bostopia -v- Sorthern Northland.
See, all that is going to do is open the door for more criticism of RP styles- particularly when everyone RPs to a level that they find enjoyable. Saying that, surely any effort you put forth criticizing others would be better spent working on your own RPs, thereby increasing everyone's enjoyment.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to build a pagan shrine to Doctor Reg.

Would that be because your far superior military is going to blow SN off the face of the NSworld and therefore there will be no SN for you to be at war with?
;)
