For those of you who haven't been around before WC 36, a bit of clarification about my last post on the Pre WCXL thread http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13546961&postcount=18

I'm re-opening a story thread from not only World Cup 35, and the 24th Cup of Harmony, but also my Baptism of Fire[Pre-Wc27]... either I ran out of ideas, or this was my grand plan all along, and I was stringing it out. You decide. :D

Could someone please provide me with, or tell me where to find, a quick list of the current top 15 teams or current top 11 active teams [ie, not including Ariddia or any other squads not signed up for WC40]

This is to help Holy Empire (rather than Archregimancy) RP for WC40.

As part of a broader RP theme, it's my plan to have the Empire field a team of dream simulacra featuring a player from each of the active top 11-15 (precise number depending on subs).

In addition to being a suitably celebratory team to commemorate WC40, this should also provide obvious RP opportunities for appropriately-ranked opponents when they find themselves facing off against am identical copy of one of their star players.

Thanks in advance.

Let's hope I can become a regular WC qualifier, 30th doesn't fill me with security...

But we don't want too much security... I know I've noted this before, but I'm the proof that you can go from top 10 to consecutive non-qualifications and a rank in the low to mid thirties very quickly. And as much as that might have frustrated me as an individual when it happened, I recognise that it's better for the broader WC community - especially lower-ranked teams - to have examples to prove that downward mobility, and therefore upward mobility, does actually happen.

Though we seem to have stabilised again. There was a period in the low thirties where a combination of established teams dropping out (temporarily or permanently) and some unusually random scorination shuffled the pack a bit. Which was all to the good at the time (though some of the scorination results gave many of us heart palpitations). The late thirties seem to have brought us more stability again; except for the Archregimancy's rapid post-WC35 decline, I don't think there's been too much shuffling of the top 10 recently.

But feel free to prove me wrong. I haven't bothered to check the rankings history, so I might well be mistaken.

A little note on WC40 scheduling.

I do believe we're currently waiting for one more sign-up to make a round 92 (90+hosts) for fifteen groups of six. Top Team to automatically go through, places 2 + 3 going into the melting pot of play-offs. For this, the schedule is tentatively as follows:

The Draw should take place on Thursday 27th - I'll hold it on IRC, of course, so get your IRC schedules set for the evening of GMT for that one.

Pre-Qualifying Friendlies On Saturday 29th - get your TGs in to Krytenia for this one. There will also be mid- and post-qualifying friendlies, the latter of which will take place during the play-offs.

Matchday One on Monday 31st - this is fairly simple.

So, basically, we need one more sign-up!

Sta’ťma oř’du yača’wit’ňe?

I'll help you decode the language on behalf of my "other" counterpart.

Sta’ťma = "what", accusative

oř’du = "you", genitive

yača = "name", nominative

wit’ňe = "to be", with interrogative modifier.

In all: "What is your name?"

Yes it is, the answer to life the universe and everything is 42. But what is the question?

Ah. Presuming the answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42, one must know what the question for this. If one does not have a question, how does one ascertain which response is proper? Otherwise, would not any other answer suffice for an inquiry that has no question? Fundamentally, the question determines the answer; the answer itself does not determine the question.

On that note, a question that has multiple answers has not been thoroughly excised of extracutaneous material and is in most general cases worthless (so shove that up your teacher's a$$ the next time he/she tried to shove a "critical thinking" question up yours - high school only of course, since college thrives on the extracutaneous matter for excessive grants, scholarships, and money).

Besides that, if I wrote the laws of the universe, I wouldn't write an answer that was unscrupulously unlucky.

42 = 40 + 2 = 6 * 7 = 50 - 8

6(13) * 9(13) = 42(13)

42(4) + 42(6) = 44(10)

Obrigado, Caf, but you're assuming that HEFA are automatically going to pick each team's best players.... HEFA have a proven record of sometimes not quite understanding what's going on in Ordinary Reality. That Laborious Hawk is Valanora's best player is mere coincidence.

There will be a couple of roster surpises.

It also makes it easier for me to RP an explanation of why such a star-studded team can't walk away with the whole damned thing if there are a couple of, well, slightly more eccentric choices.

Soon, all will be revealed; probably by Basil and Theo making a comeback announcement after a couple of more low-profile tournaments.

Despite the absence of any punctuation marks (aside from parentheses), the IFA of Daehanjeiguk confirms this mid-qualifier friendly.

And for some odd reason, we have this note from some PKF demanding that we also broadcast their intention to play against Kosovoe. Man, we must be drinking some heavy stuff to be imaging this $hit.

yeah i was 7th leading up to WC39, but was only 18th in WC38 which had been my highest ranking until then. so i still claim my newness to the top 10 in the timeframe Arch mentioned even with a bit of a slip last time.

Jeru, I hope you don't mind me pointing out some slightly incorrect Latin on your currency.

The proper Latin form for 'Henry' is 'Henricus', not 'Henrius'.

And you use a disputed varient of 'Jerusalem'. The official title of the Crusader 'Kingdom of the Jerusalem', for example (and I wrote the entry on 'The Crusades' in the 'Encyclopedia of Historical Archaeology' [he writes, perhaps a little too egotistically]) was: "Regnum Hierosolimitanum"

Hope that helps!

Edit: but I love the touch of writing 'specimen' on an IC currency sample

Or Jeremy Jaffacake, or Simeone Di Bradini, or Sasijilvenku "Sasi" Dikelesinivetisaru (the only player placed in the hall of fame by two nations), or Zack de la Rocha, or Tanner Nerni, or even - God help us all - even Dazza Dallas?

Because there's only five spots on the bench, silly (there's also an IC reason for Di Bradini's omission - it was deemed inappropriate to feature a player from either co-host).

If you're feeling disgruntled over the legends selection, feel free to express yourself in the RP thread accordingly. The whole point of this Holy Empire squad is that it's highly interactive in terms of other nations' potential reactions.

Justinian apart, genuine legends reaching back through the distant past of the Cup. I don't think any of the true legends played past WC25 (and even 25 was a rather odd appearance by Urk). As noted, this meant that some other famous players had to miss out.

As to the starters, I needed 11 players, only one team in the top ranks - Ariddia - is inactive this tournament, so I simply went down as far as Sel Appa. Qazox weren't ranked highly enough. While the Empire's squad inevitably has an all-star feel, I tried to make my choices slightly quirky in places because I need an IC reason to explain away why such a high-powered team won't (in all probability) get much past the second round.

As a two-time Bronze Medalist in the Sel Appa Wrestling Exhibition, Mongke Bokegalbaatar gladly accepts the challenges. Reserve goalkeeper, Anastasia Vadov, is being prepped in the event of injury or incident and may even be put as a starter for those two matches so Bokegalbaatar may train more.

Sel Appan Wrestling is virtually identical to Mongolian (which is the most awesome kind IMO).

Just for a clarification on the opinions of the events in World Cup 39 in the Han Empire.

(1) - The Imperial Government officially denies any military conflict against Bostopia, Sorthern Northland, and any other state; they also deny any invasion of Haenam Island, stating that a massive storm devastated the area, washing up a bunch of military hardware upon the island;

(2) - The people aren't aware that any war ever happened, except that there are a lot of weird tanks sitting upon Haenam;

(3) - Folks abroad think that Bostopia is dead because the Han nuked them. N00k=uber pwnzors, therefore no more Bostopia. And no ethnic Han lives in Bostopia (except maybe Turkish spies...), so there's no proof that Bostopia exists anyway;

(4) - The media is fully aware of the "truth" and will continue to use it to their advantage. Just so you're aware, all broadcasts here are brought to you by MBC International, a branch of MBC that broadcasts internationally only (no one domestically broadcasts MBC International). And the media, now aware that they have the power, are going to try to use it to "change the world".

Thank you!

The hardware has been completely confiscated - any damaged equipment has been destroyed, extant equipment put through extensive testing and then destroyed. So sorry.

Any dead personnel were burned, their ashes cast to sea, reflecting their loss at sea to the storm. Any living personnel have been sent to an undisclosed location where their identity is still being worked out (maybe?). In any case they're not going home because either they'll be assimilated to the Han culture or they'll die trying. Also, thank you for clarifying that Sorthern Northland was in the seas nearby, because according to even secret military opinions, Sorthern Northland lacked any capacity to invade the Han Empire (even though the intelligence suggested otherwise - 1,000,000 points and a hyper-cool picture of two dogs to the first person can guess correctly what historical corollary this is based on - Korean/Chinese/Japanese examples only).

Oy...I need to figure that out...

NOTE TO HOSTS: It's "Illegal Immigrants" No NS. I just put NS so it would be usable.

I meant to release this earlier, but forgot. For the Turtle Cup, I made my own RP Bonus Calculator since I was unable to get Baz's to work. The calculator used the standard five-level RP Bonus. Each value was added to the rank that existed (12 for Sel Appa).

1 for Roster
1 for Excellent RP
0.5 for Great RP
0.25 for Good RP
0.125 for Weak RP
0.0625 for Slani RP

I have a weird obsession with powers of two... Also, I did give myself the roster bonus (since it was objective--Yes/No), but not for any RP. Comments/complaints on this method are welcome.

And now, a message from FFSA President Sharon Eiboln:
"It is my regret to announce that Sel Appa and Zanziik will be withdrawing their bid for the 32nd Cup of Harmony. Both of our nations and football associations are no longer able to commit to the tournament. Our bid would detract from superior bids, as well as, potentially split the vote further in a formerly five-way contest. We hereby endorse the AA (Ad'ihan-Acapais) bid for the 32nd Cup of Harmony."

Sorry, Han, but thanks to this (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13573192&postcount=5) you now have an RP bonus of zero again, and start from scratch for MD2. The 'no posting in the Scores Thread' rule, and subsequent punishments, has developed as a way of stopping people putting Tags, Comments and even amusing counter-scores in the scores thread and cluttering it up; it's a thread where people just want to receive their scores.

'Whining' ICly (referencing RP) we don't mind, in fact we encourage it as it all adds to the flavour of the Cup. Posting your comedy April Fools Day scorelines in the thread which has big instructions not to post, however, we do mind.

While it is only two days, having sobered up, it doesn't seem so fantastic a prank as I did promise to remove the "scores" after the day was done, and I guess it isn't such a great thing for your players to score 1100 goals in one match, because then they're too tired to score any more in future matches (theoretically that is...)

"Balls!" Hill yelled, kicking at the grass and watching it lift slightly. "This bastard pitch is coming up again."

"Again? Why are we so chronically unable to keep grass in this place?" Lornair said, looking out of the tunnel. "It's not too wet to hold." There were a few odd drops, the very tail end of the shower which had moved through a few hours before the match.

"The field won't drain, it's never drained." Mark Antari said, rubbing his right eye and looking like he made it out of bed twelve to fourteen minutes before arriving at the field.

"Well, why not, that's the question."

"Built the stadium on a graveyard?"

"No-"

"Gypsy curse?"

"No, there's not-"

"Gophers?"

"How the hell could there be-"

"Some kind of wild dog that pees on the field and kills the grass?"

Hill and Lornair gave Antari a stare and sighed. "We're not looking for dogs living in the stadium. That's a stupid idea and you're stupid."

"But you don't know that they're not."

"There's no dead spots, dog pee would cause dead spots."

Hill rolled her eyes. "It sucks because there's no contractor in this town that'll do a decent damn job of it."

"That and the dogs."

"Antari, I'm going to set you on fire." Lornair yelled, prompting a comical chase down the tunnel and around the corner towards the locker room. Hill stayed behind for a minute, another brief shower starting to water the field again.

"Rain's not helping either."

We've been down this road before... Basically the argument is summed up in the following phrase.

"Women can and do play in the current World Cup so there is no need, and if someone does run a Women's World Cup it won't have any linkage to the "World Cup" and expect attendence to be down. Way down."

OK. I wasn't in for checking nearly 250 pages about that idea.

Baz has pretty much said it all, really. The Women's World Cup suffered from the fact that the World Cup itself is multi-gender if the nations who play it want it to be. Some have all-female teams, some have fairly equal male-female representation, and some assume that, as in RL, women are not as 'good' (I use that word with the following enormous disclaimer: For 'good' read: strong, quick, tall, heavy, etc - I'm not getting in trouble for that!) as men. With low participation (and starting tournaments too soon after the previous one), the WWC sort of faded away.

For me, the WWC did bring a multi-gender Starblaydi side about, as I created a female side, and the stars of that ended up playing in the full WC side. Now the mix is about 75%-25% men-women in the Starblaydi side, and long may it remain.

And I don't think there's a single mention of the WWC in this thread, before now. There was plenty about it in the old WC Discussion Thread, which has been lost to us when Jolt couldn't handle the 11,142 posts we'd ended up putting into it - quite a few more than 250 pages worth.

To nations in my group (Qazox in particular):

The nations that Az-cz home games are held at are the same as those used in WC33. The main ones are Slimes Stadium, Knights Coliseum, Burlock Castle, and Shangri-La, but feel free to use any want.

Sure, that would be fine. Home, away, or neutral for that game?

If Dancougar were to serve as a neutral side for those mid-qual games, they would be played, as all others are, in the National Stadium in Yuki City.

How big of a factor is home field advantage in this scorinating? I'd like to know, because I would like to vouch that it should be VERY significant for a nation in my situation, FIRST EVER at home.

We should have been maxed out here, I'm sorry.... first game in the nation ever, against an opponent who hasn't done a thing in the World Cup, and I've been 2 RP's a day since the start of it. If there was one game on my schedule of 10 that should have been a nobrainer 3 points, this was it. Maybe my RPing is pointless. Expect nothing more from me tonight or tomorrow. I have better use of my time.

Congrats. You have discovered the World Cup's propensity for "sheer bad luck". RP does not guarantee wins (not by a long chalk), home factor is a mild advantage, and in the grand scheme of things, your draw with Lithima is far less surprising than, say, Vephrall's complete lack of points.

Suck it in, keep going, and don't be surprised if you end up with a shock victory further down the line.

OK, rant over.

The vent can be sucked up. Others vent here, this is my turn. I'm not throwing in the towel. But I do feel that home field advantage should be taken in a different light when it's the first ever in a nation, and be more then "mild". That's part of my point.

Ya know, also a factor here, and I apologize if so, is because I get people wanting "perfection" in an American Football scorinator I'm trying to work up but yet something that might cuase this kind of "bad luck" there wouldn't be accepted there, when it is here. I think that may have been a factor and I apologize for combining the two things.

Duplicating what Kry has already said slightly, as I preview my post: You've been lucky that the first two tournaments you entered (for everyone else, the Di Bradini Cup and Baptism of Fire) were scored with my 'RP = teh win' scorinator. The World Cup is far, far more random, and produces all sorts of results, some you will like, and some you most definitely will not. Home field gives you a slight bonus, a very slight one. We don't add extra bonuses for the first, tenth or hundredth match, birthday or whatever in the scorinator.

I couldn't even begin to count the number of times I've read "I RP loads and they're a non-RPing n00b, and I still lose" in WCDT posts. In the WC we have Rank and Randomness, and 'no-brainer' matches don't come along very often, if at all. Yes, via Rank and RP you had a good chance of defeating Lithima, but Randomness snuck in and got them a draw. Don't ruin a great start to a Sports RPing career, please, and I really mean this, by throwing your toys out of the pram as the first reaction to not getting the results you think you deserve in your first qualifying campaign. Four matches in to my first campaign, and I had a solitary point. Just one, with fourteen further matches to go.

As an RPing Baptism of Fire Runner-Up in WC38 I lost nine out of fourteen matches, against all sorts of teams, both useless and useful. As the best team in the world I lost to a much lower Qazox twice in one qualifying session in WC31.

That I know, I have told myself over and over not to get a big head because of that! ;) I never said I was giving up, just going to take my foot off the gas a bit here.

Again, I think its more of my response to the "I wont play (American football) unless the scorinator is perfect" of a couple people (I know most are trying to help, but a couple others gave me that impression), which is kind of like saying I won't accept this kind of bad luck in a start up competition, when I'm busting my ass trying to work out a good formula.... spent hours on that last night.

Also people should be aware, I'm a night shift person in the US... I'm just waking up to this without my coffee yet.

Your idea is good; alas, it'd be very difficult to implement in a scorinator. Feel free to TG Vephrall if you have any ideas though; his NSFS scorinator is the Microsoft Windows of the NSWC (only without the yucky MICROSOFT WILL EAT YOUR BABIES mentality).

Speaking of how much advantage playing at home actually gives you I'm pretty sure I saw a report or study or something recently which seemed to suggest teams actually did better away than at home (or at least not as well as would be expected) due to pressure and expectation at home. Can't remember which sport or league it was though so I can't actually say anything else about

Although I suppose that the first home game ever would be an advantage due to atmosphere, excitement etc, certainly a real life example would be Reading's first game in the Premiership last season, two nil down and suddenly the crowd woke up and we went on to win three two. But there is a flipside to that, at home the fans and even players will be more expectant, (especially for a team whose won two of it first tournaments) and therefore the pressure on the players would be higher than at an away game and therefore more likely for them to underperform.

Too much randomness? I've scored five goals in four games in a row, I'd say it's all a bit all the same for me at the minute. Mind you if the other team only scores a maximum of four goals a game I won't complain. :p

Erm.. I'll spoil a surprise for you. You aren't qualify this time around (unless you happen to be Oickoidia in disguise). But to stop RPing because it doesn't work is like stopping bailing water out of a leaking boat - sure, you won't stop the leak, but if you stop bailing, you'll sink faster. Of course, that depends on whether you care to sink faster or not...

Depending on the amount of utensils, their placement varies. Cups and glasses are almost always on the left side. If there is only a fork and knife, fork, knife, and spoon, or the utensils are rolled up, they will be on the left. If there are more than one of any utensil, forks are on the left, while knives and spoons are on the left.

Following these guidelines will ensure you have a pleasant time eating and dining in Sel Appa and with Sel Appans. Sel Appans appreciate it when foreigners try to adopt local customs.

Actually it is!!!

You see, you're statistically more likely to win a home match compared to winning an away match. It doesn't necessarily mean that you're more likely likely to win at home than you are to draw/lose the same match.
