I won't bother congratulating ESF for one of the more inevitable (but by no means undeserved) WC victories of recent tournaments since others have beaten me to it, and will hope he forgives me for hoping someone else wins WC44.

Three championships in the last four, a back-to-back win and a top three finish in each of the last six tournaments? Elven domination is already among us.

You know, at least back in the late twenties this thing was dominated by three teams, not just one. :p

I had discussed this prior to my victory, but should I appear uncatchable following WC44, I have decided to quit the WC, as I don't think a single team dominating the competition is healthy for the continued success of it.

A brief question, Kry&Renni, on the (winning, let’s be honest) WC bid – when you say you intend to start in early January, does that refer to the World Cup proper, or qualifying?

It make no odds either way to me, really (indeed, I’d rather welcome a nice long gap), but I’d have thought others might consider that a rather long off-season, intrusive festive period or no. Apologies if I've read this wrong, though.

Official Baptism of Fire Announcement!

Your friendly neighborhood host here, announcing the timetable for the upcoming Baptism of Fire.

While there is currently no sign-up deadline set for the World Cup proper, the cutoff for Baptism of Fire entries will be Thursday, December 3 at midnight Eastern time (0500 GMT). You can expect the RP/Roster/Scores thread to pop up around that time. Then everyone will have a chance to get in their preliminary roleplays before the tournament starts on Monday, December 7.

Teams which have already participated in a Baptism of Fire are ineligible. However, if you played in a previous World Cup but not its associated Baptism of Fire, and you have 0 KPB points, you will be permitted to compete.

As stated in the bid thread, the number of teams will determine the layout. Plan on having one group stage game every day starting on the 7th, followed by a day off, followed by playoffs. Adjustments to this will be posted in the Baptism of Fire thread when it appears.

Feel free to TG me with any questions.

Please don't quit completely! We're dropping too many sign-ups as it is, and you contribute a lot.

Your dedication to fairness is commendable, but if you're worried about total constant Elven domination, I'd recommend taking the Bedistan-LE option or the Starblaydia option.

Bedistan-LE option: Drop your current nation, but come back as a new nation (perhaps even 'Valanora' if it hasn't been taken), and try and climb back up from the beginning again.

Starblaydia option: Take a long enough break to allow your ranking points to fall to 0, and then start signing up again - and try and climb back up from the beginning again.

Or another of Dancougar's Crazy Ideas! We give teams drawn in Valanora's qualifying group an extra incentive to RP. Your posts send your KPB up... and Valanora's down! Can Valanora counter with quality RPs of his own? The plot thickens!

Or, taking a cue from the Dancougar News!!, one of the interns at the WCC office accidentally burns a bunch of Valanora's competition records and their KPB points are suddenly 2/3 what they used to be. Frantic searches for the backups reveal that the hard drives are filled with Dazza Dallas porn and the magnetic tape was used to teepee Emperor Boston's palace.

You still haven't got to Rejistania's KPB points record yet have you? Plus, you're a dedicated RPer and deserve your success.

It's not a palace, it's a castle. Big stone building + toboggan marks + moat + drawbridge + underground car park with secret entrance to the underground ring-road (woop for no pollution and keeping the city looking good by not having an overground one and hemming in the city centre; looking at you, Coventry City Council - though I DO love the ring road, confuses outsiders) = castle, duh.

And kindly remove the tape. Though I now have something to RP about (though WC44 RP#1 has already been written due to being 'in the mood'). I'm sure someone will get uppity about me writing an RP already, so my response to you, in advance, is "meh".

Qualifying. Mainly due to the fact that there is an intrusive BoF period before the intrusive festive period. (Also gives potential WCXLV bidders a chance to get things going reeeeeal early lol).

Just a follow-up to Kjomasasopia's identity not-really-crisis: he's confirmed (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14248600&postcount=16) that Idanno was in fact received from another user and passed on, so that's a separate user. However, his signature implies (assuming S&F stands for Sound and Fury, in which this subforum is contained) that he'd like to be withdrawn from any signup lists anyway. Deep South Sopia, formerly identified as Kjomasasopia's puppet, is now out on the open market (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=574243) with Kjomasasopia identifying it as his brother's nation.

That rather caught me on the hop - just as well I didn't start the vote last night.

Bids for WC 44 co-hosting are now closed.

I'll start up a formal vote (but with a longish deadline to allow posting of queries in the two competing bid threads) after I've had my dinner.

edit:
When collating WCC membership, would I typically use the WC 41 and 42 roster lists, or the WC 42 and 43 roster lists? I'm inclined to say the former since host voting in the past seems to have taken place during the preceding cup, but this time host voting is taking place after the conclusion of the previous tournament - so etiquette might suggest the latter.

Any hard and fast rule here, is it my discretion?
Zwangzug

I'm inclined to say the former since host voting in the past seems to have taken place during the preceding cupAs far as I can tell, the last World Cup to be going on while host voting was open for the next one was WC37. So going by recent precedent, I'd be inclined to use WC42 and 43 rosters. The rule in question unhelpfully states that (emphasis mine) "The World Cup Committee (WCC) during a particular World Cup consists of all nations that posted a roster during each of the previous two World Cups..." However, since it's WC44 hosts that are being voted on, I'd still think 42 and 43 is a better bet.

On the subject of teams of deploying women, whether lesbian or not, in the teams, surely the efficacy of such a tactic would depend on the sex and sexuality of the opposition?

Indeed, which is why during the next world cup I will have two teams rosters one comprised of homosexuals when playing team's of women (you just know their uniforms are going to look good) and another team of straight men when playing male teams.

No reason to quit just do what NEWI Cefn Druids/Druida/Schiavonia always did. Create a new country and run with it. Withdraw ESF/Valanora for a few cups or forever and then use that new country and start domination again.

Holy crap... Italy or Brazil. Hmm... or maybe... Italy AND Brazil! Half of my team stands in front of my goal and just hacks at attackers and falls down in pain when somebody brushes up against them, while the other half is in front of the opponent's goal doing all sorts of crazy ball tricks. Sadly, this leaves the middle of the field wide open.

Don't worry, that's what this thread is for... all the complaints, randomness, whining and off-topic stuff are just the filler around the help and usefulness of the thread ;)

The CoH is for nations who RP in the WC Qualifiers who don't make it to the WC Finals themselves, and it is held at the same time as the WC Finals (though individuals may decide for themselves that it's before or after the WC, too). It's sort of a reward for RPing, meaning those who actually participate but fall short in the Qualifiers get some extra ranking points.

As for the BoF? This month, I think.

I can't provide a list here as I was counting votes at work, won't be back at work until Thursday, and have deleted those TGs.

However, I can confirm receiving votes from both Adi/Liv and Starblaydia; latter deleted after being counted, but specifically remember Star wishing me well after test results. Adi/Liv vote still in in-box.

Everyone except ESF/Valanora has sent TGs to Archregimancy; ESF sent his vote to AIF.

I've kept inbox well under maximum number of TGs, so short of some sort of problem with NationStates proper, I can guarantee that anyone spelling my nations' names correctly will have had vote counted.

Fluid time is all well and good, but if you're using a four-year time cycle (which you don't have to do) the timing is usually followed thusly:

Year 0: World Cup N Finals
Year 1: Oxen Cup
Year 2: Baptism of Fire, then World Cup N+1 Qualifying first half
Year 3: World Cup N+1 Qualifying second half
Year 4: World Cup N+1 Finals

Az-cz didn't cease mid-cup, so there is no penalty to KPB ranks.

Welllll.... not that I want to be a nag, but......

According to the AO board, he ceased 11 days ago, which would have been November 20. The World Cup officially ended on the 25th.

So he kinda did cease mid-Cup. Unless this rule is when the Cup run of the nation in question ends. If so, then he'd be ok because his World Cup ended on the 17th.
Liventia

In any case, hasn't the 80-point penalty only applied in qualifying and the group stage? There's never been a penalty, as far as I'm aware, for ceasing after that, aside from possibly being excluded from the tournament.

I think somewhere along the line, confusion has occurred as to the two 80pt penalties used in the World Cup.

80-point deduction in-play: Enforced at the end of any group phase where a participating team has CTEd.

80-point KPB deduction: Enforced on any DEATed nation. Last used for either Somalialand or Shearer Heaven IIRC. Natural CTEs should have no KPB penalty AFAIK.

getting a bit burnt out on trying to come up with RPs after all these cups so i might coast along for another cup to keep my consecutive cup streak alive and hope that recharges the creative engines. or i might pop in and do some for the next one. who knows at this point. definitely not going to bother with puppets though this time around.

On learning that there wan't [yet] a physical trophy for the BoF winner, a Cup or Shield or whatever, the government of Bears Armed has proposed the creation of one (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=14326435&postcount=56) (at our expense): Would this be acceptable to the World Cup Committee and, if so, would the Committee's President sign this (and the copy that we propose to keep, permanently, even after the "main" one has been passed to the next contest's winner) -- on the back -- to indicate its authenticity?

Having both been the President of the WCC and a three-time winner of the World Cup (though not the BoF, curses Pazhujeb!), there is no way we could enforce a single trophy style on each tournament. No-one would be able to agree and no-one would be trusted to make one from scratch or steal it from a RL trophy.

I imagine some people think it looks like the current RL trophy, some like the old Jules Rimet cup, others like the Stanley Cup (god knows it needs to fit 43 names on already), FA Cup, Rubber Chicken or whatever.

Perhaps its one of those mystical things that appears to each person a different way. Much better like that.

Host Announcement

Can all confirmed pre-qualifying fixtures please be TGd to Candelaria And Marquez. I’ll keep an eye on any others mentioned in this thread, obviously, but they’re less likely to get missed if you send them directly. Mid- and post-qualifying games can also be sent, providing the intended timing is made clear.

We’re setting a maximum of two friendly fixtures per nation (though not per user) per matchday – that’s still a total of six potentially, which is surely more than enough for anybody.

(Consider our games confirmed, Qaz, Neth & Taeshan.)

Another Host Announcement

In regards to the calendar of events, we’re pencilling in the group draw for New Year’s Day, pre-qualifying friendlies for January 2nd, and Matchday One for the 3rd, with the World Cup proper starting on around January 20th.

This might well change a tad however, depending on the progress of sign-ups, Boxing Day natural disasters wiping out much of the British Isles, the unexpected deaths of family pets at inopportune moments, etcetera, so don’t take it as gospel just yet.

And a thoroughly jangly Winterval to everyone, from me. Weeee.

The Monastic Football Association consider this to be a worthy cause, and suggest extending the friendly to a three team mini-tournament between Sarzonia, Starblaydia, and the Archregimancy, with each team playing each other once.

Suggested format:

pre-qualifying - Sarzonia v. Starblaydia

mid-qualifying - The Archregimancy v. Starblaydia

post-qualifier - Sarzonia v. The Archregimancy

-------------------------------------------------------------------

On a more personal note, this World Cup is appallingly timed for me. I leave for a professional conference in Toronto, Canada on the 6th of January, and from the 11th through the 16th will be on holiday in the USA. I then have my 40th birthday (cripes) on the 22nd, with a small social gathering on the 24th.

As a result, it's likely that any RPing from me will be intermittent between the 6th and the 16th at least, and possibly between the 6th and the 24th.

I'll at least try and keep up my WCC president responsibilities - but if I think RL is going to get in the way of starting the sign-up thread for WC45 and/or arranging votes for the next CoH hosts, I'll send WCC VP Zwangzug the the 'NSWC Signups' password, and give Zwang permission to initiate the next CoH vote as necessary.

Just a quick question:

In the RP permissions box in roster threads, what does allowing Godmodding scoring, injury and other events mean? i.e. how is it different to allowing an opponent to just pick your scorers/injuries?

Just a quick question:

FOR EXAMPLE:
n00bistan 6- rookieville 0

Player X from n00bistan scored all goals while performing openheart surgery, juggling clowns and finding the lost city of gold. Basically it means don't exagerrate (sic) too much in your RP.
Sarzonia
25-12-2008, 06:09
Godmoding scoring, injury and other events means something like you can have something like the wind blowing the ball into your opponent's net to account for a goal. It can be something like a bird flying overhead and doing its business blinds your opponent's star striker.

If someone says no Godmoding scoring or injuries, then you can't do something like have the Earth open up and swallow an opponent's defender.
West Zirconia
25-12-2008, 09:12
The way I see it, if it could happen in RL (even if it's unlikely), then it's OK.
If it couldn't possibly happen, then I'd class it as a godmod.
Liventia
25-12-2008, 09:42
Indeed. In fact, allowing your opponents to choose scorers is generally encouraged. It helps promote RP, rather than stifle it if one chooses not to allow it.

Goalies getting double hat-tricks, defenders forgetting to play because they're watching an aerial display team, the referee deliberately heading a goal in for one side or the other...

Stuff like that: Immensely unlikely, controversy-inspiring and flat out "that's really stupid" events are godmods.

Going on a forty yard run past four players, wrong-footing the goalie and knocking it in from two yards would not be a godmod. Unless it was you goalie/coach/cheerleader/commentator doing it, perhaps.

Though it's worth emphasising that where godmodding is permitted in RP instructions, there may be perfectly logical in-character reasons for that godmod, even while the events would remain unlikely and/or impossible in real life.

A World Cup match with Bears Armed, for example, already requires us to accept the existence of sentient football-playing humanoid ursines. Imagine a match between those ursines and the Holy Empire's man-eating giant blancmanges from a few tournaments back, and you can soon see why godmodding can make for entertaining RPs - but it has to be done with the permission of the other player.

Don’t be so sad about it :p
Oh, and…
Quick note for everyone...

As we have reached the end of the academic semester, I'll be going away to visit family for a while. Unfortunately, my family doesn't have much in the way of Internet connections. Therefore you should expect to see very little (probably none) of me until Wednesday 31 December.

Sounds like job for Jeruselem! :p
I think only have another friendly with Taeshan, that would make two friendlies.

Excellent! We will see you there!

Ok, when is the friendly supposed to be (Pre-Qual?) and did you TG someone or should I do it?

Anyone else want a trip to a tropical paradise? I've got 2 spots open.

Cold weather countries, I'm looking at you. (Myedvedeva, Taeshan, Secristan)

Or I'll eat your soul.

:)

PS: Also looking for other friendlies, any time, any place. Let me know.

We're not a cold weather country like the others, but we will take the trip anyway. I haven't heard from Peisandros, so we can do it pre-qualifying.

We'll be up for playing someone new, care to visit for a mid-qualifying friendly?

Sorry for the double post, but would Secristan like to recieve a bunch of likely-to-spend-a-lot-of-money fans and players in their country for a pre qualifier?

Ok.

Secristan (Pre-Qual) Home
Cassadaigua (TBD) Away

One more friendly for anyone who wants it.

Whenever is best for you. I'll go with what you decide. I haven't TG'd our game yet, no.

I'll take a friendly match. I guess that my country is more of a cold one, at least in the capital region, but I'll take any match up.

I'm assuming you meant that at me, since I'm soliciting, and mentioned weather.

I hope your definition of "vacation" differs greatly from mine.

I was under the impression that WC44 had already started. In any case, sure...

My definition of "vacation" apparently includes "no Internet access, except when at your aunt's house, where the only connection is dialup, which means it takes a full half-hour to check your e-mail, and when you're finished, you don't even want to think of any other website".

Clearly I need to upgrade my mobile phone plan to include Internet access of some sort. :/

Oh, and I agree with Qazox wholeheartedly. As far as I'm concerned, December 31 did not exist and the year was 365 days long just like the usual. I imagine Arroza would agree with me in this regard. :/

Ah that's good. And a happy new year to you, and to all a happy new year.
