And they did, along with a great pile of silver, too. I'm not sure why Argentina was named that. Part of it was in something called the Viceroyalty of the River Platte, or something like that, back before Bolivar and the revolutions of the early 18th century.

She looks quite a bit like a colleague of mine, who besides looking as good also has a very hot accent. So, assuming that D. also has that Russian inflection, that is where my vote went. You already knew Argentina was named after the latin word 'argentum', meaning 'silver'.

But why? The thing is, there was a legend, among the first Portuguese conquerors that arrived to South America, that there was an abundance of silver in the region the Spanish conqueror Juan Díaz de Solís had named 'Mar Dulce' ('Sweet Sea', because it's a river that's so so wide that it seems to be a sea). The portuguese conquerors, because of the legend, started calling that river 'Río da Prata' ('Silver river', or 'Plate river'). The Spanish followed the example and called it 'Río de la Plata'.

The Spanish government named the Viceroyalty where the actual Argentinian terroty lies, 'Virreinato del Río de la Plata', but even as early as 1536, a Venetian map marked the region as 'Argentina'. That's the very first time the term was used officially.

Despite this, the country didn't adopt the name until the Constitution of 1853 was sanctioned, more than three centuries after.
