still have my crappy point and shoot, waiting on my "real camera" to come via UPS.
however, I did take a pic of some mysterious flowers growing in my flower bed, I was going out to clean it and get it ready for planting, when I saw these.... I think I will leave them. I guess they don't call them wildflowers for nothing, since I didn't plant them, and I don't know how they got there (weren't there a few days ago, I don't think)

Can anyone suggest a camera to me? I mean not TOOO expensive (less than 200) but has decent quality. My camera I have now is ok for what its worth, but I want to take better quality pictures. :)

I have a question about my B&W photos..
On my monitor, they look good and very B&W, but when printed, they're blue or green.. Is it my monitor that's lying to me, or the printer?

Explination of what's going on in the pic: It was warm enough outside to melt the snow, but it was cool enough that the snow in the shadows of the trees didn't melt, causing the effect seen.

if i had a bunch of cash to spare to print and post a picture, you know i would :)
strange you like that one though... i just love this one (http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/Billingshurst%20080407/images/Billingshurst%20080407%20evening%2028%20HDR%20JPG.jpg) a ton. might even consider getting that one printed on canvas for me birthday instead of this one (http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/old%20galleries/Scotland%20280206/images/Copy%20of%20Pho1%20a.jpg)
its actually a HDR merge of two bracketed RAWs, so its not quite WYSIWYG a la the camera (no not you WYTYG... *gets confused by too many letters*)
the traffic ones are really quite simple long exposures. the ones i did in town (this was a village) were far harder to do, heh

And my newly designed website.
Edit: I also need a new domain name. Any ideas?
I was thinking underconstructionphotography.com.Yay, those are cool! And I think the name is great. It also totally covers your ass for those times when you haven't uploaded something in a while or haven't finished the design. :p
two new galleries from the last week or so:
http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/sunset%20060407/index.htm
http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/Billingshurst%20080407/index.htmWait, so is this (http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/sunset%20060407/pages/DSCF0818.htm) just a crop from the ones that are further away? Or do you have some humongous zoom? And if it's a crop - man, I really should learn some basic Photoshop skills...
In addition to that one, I especially like
this (http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/Billingshurst%20080407/pages/Billingshurst%20080407%20evening%20064.htm),
this (http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/Billingshurst%20080407/pages/Billingshurst%20080407%20003.htm) and of course
this one. (http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/Billingshurst%20080407/pages/Billingshurst%20080407%20evening%2028%20HDR%20JPG.htm) Again, is the latter what you can do when you use photoshop to lighten up the image (in comparison to the first version (http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/Billingshurst%20080407/pages/Billingshurst%20080407%20evening%20026.htm) of that pic)?
And I think it's funky that you can actually see the turn signals here (http://www.hljphotography.co.uk/images/Billingshurst%20080407/pages/Billingshurst%20080407%20evening%20077.htm).
And I love that one also! It just doesn't go with the colour of my bedroom walls. :pHoney, one can't even SEE your bedroom walls under all your clutter!

You have a TG.
ah crap, totally forgot about the TG (been busy here)
i don't really know... i guess a pertinent question is how much she'll pay?
obviously you gotta cover your costs, and since you're printing it your costs will be higher than just selling a JPG or something. off the top of my head... $100? $75? $120? i think those two are more than reasonable if they come framed and all.
i actually might have a business proposition for you, but it depends if we can get our asses in gear here. look out for a TG
Also reminds me of why I *have* to go to school for photography. I didn't understand what the hell you were talking about. :p
basically a HDR image is a high dynamic range image, which is to say that the range of the spectum of light (from light to dark) is greater than that possible in a single image. what i did for that picture was to put two identical photos together, both taken a fraction of a second apart using the camera's bracketing function, which takes three pics - one at -x EV, one at x and one at +x (you can set +-x up to 2 EV... EV being exposure compensation)
thankfully photoshop can merge the two pics into a HDR for you, cos i've done it before manually and its a pain in the ass.
the long of the short of it is you get the best of two photos - the sky/sunset and the detail in the foreground :)
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/newcam/stuff8076.jpg
I used a stack of cd cases on a dash board to get that. It's impossible for me to take that picture with camera in hand..
its cool - kinda abstract. i like it :)
the off-centre roadsigns give just enough clarity and focus to draw your eye into the photo :)
i was gonna say 'get yourself a tripod!' but looks like its been said :P

That it had been in the driveway long enough for the handle to bleach and the head rust was what originally drove me to photograph it.

So I got the prints made for the customer (How cool is that?! "Customer" *dollar signs appear in eyes*), and my mother insisted I show her what the customer wanted, so I showed her the first one (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/newcam/Longwood%20Gardens/DSCF9196.jpg) (8x12) and she asked me (in the most snobby stuck up bitchy way possibly) "She wanted that? Are you sure?"
Mother fucking bitch!
.. oh wait, she hasn't seen the big one yet!
So I unroll the second one (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/phillyyeah082.jpg) (20x30), and she yet again asks "Are you sure?"
My mod, I hate her! Never ever do I get to enjoy something when she's around!
..
So, uhm..
Yeah. Thankfully, I don't see the customer until around 9, 9:30am. Gives me time to discuss the price (which is set right now, but might raise..) with my teacher, who has lots of knowledge with pricing..
Oh, and I took some sunset pictures while on the way to the mall, so I'll see if any of them came out good. But now, if you will excuse me, I have to go roll a joint. I feel like starting the 4/20 celebration early.

well that sucks... your mother really should be more supportive of this hobby of yours, especially that you're passionate about it and want to continue it further. silly mom.
i guess i'm pretty lucky in that my gf is extra supportive about photography (she puts up with hours of wandering around taking photos and just randomly stopping in the middle of sentences for shots... and she carries my tripod/gear :D), and my parents are great too. my dad and i often compare pictures. we like different things in our photos, but we still appreciate each others' work :)

I have a decently cool picture from atop Mt Table Rock, North Carolina.
I recently attended an Outward Bound course, which to those who do not know is a sort of wilderness survival school. This one was in heavily mountainous terrain, which was quite difficult. Anyhow, on the last day we climbed to the top of among the highest peaks in the area (From the very bottom of the deepest gorge in the Eastern United States), in an hour and twenty minutes, something which the councillors said was incredible. We did this to see the sunrise, and I took this picture:

Last time I tried to see the sunrise I spent an hour climbing in darkness to realise it was foggy. Bah.

Well, we ditched our sixty-seventy pound packs for the first time in a week, so we were able to move a hell of alot faster than normal lol.
That, and we were pretty toughened by a 13 and a half hour forced march up, across, and around several mountains which we had endured several days prior. I have a few more pictures which I'll upload in a bit. Theres one of me on the first day in the "What do you look like?" thread on the last page.

hehe i actually dreamed about this photography thread last night... some noob had come along and started up their own new one, and we were all like "no way!!" and... well..... how sad is that? :( ;)
but after we all went into this big loft place and i was showing people how to set up pro lighting rigs and stuff, and it was cool again :D
Yeah, that hasn't happened to me yet.. =P
Although I could use those lighting skills..

I feel the need to use thumbnails, as it is easier. Trust me, I'm not trying to be kind.. =P But meh, I never know when a picture is too big (*has a widescreen*).
And damnit! You made me rhyme.

It's not so much the width as the depth. Posting [img] takes up whole @#$%ing pages!!
"your sig is to big" fit the rhyme at the time.

Also - does anybody know a good camera bag?
It only needs to fit a SLR with attached lens, but apparently the Nikon and/or its measly kit lens is too big for most bags. I don't really want to lug around a huge bag, though. Meh.

Best is to take your rig to the shop and try it in the different bags. If you're stuck shopping online, maybe try one of the bags with adjustable walls (they use velcro). Also, don't be afraid to try a "non-camera" type bag. Sometimes, you find just what you want, and it's cheaper ;)

Oh yes, I stacked them. Quite annoying. I think it took a while to make it sturdy. You're the second person to seem amazed at me doing that.. hrm.
Those zoo pics were pretty good. I don't like zoos, but maybe I should go some time and take the camera.
I don't like zoos, for the same reason I don't like circuses. They whore animals. But to be honest, the main reason I wanted to go to the zoo, is because they have a hot air balloon that takes you up to see an awesome view of the city. But, of course, it was shut down due to weather. *grunts* Didn't even rain..
But yes, the zoo was really nice after I got use to all the damn tourists. And I refuse to be called a tourist! I am a photographer! *grunts again*

Also, don't be afraid to try a "non-camera" type bag. Sometimes, you find just what you want, and it's cheaper ;)Yeah. But I hate shopping in small specialty stores <.<. I know, I know, that makes me evil and globalisation-y but I always feel stupid and watched and...and... I just hate it. :/
And the big department stores here (i.e. where nobody really bothers you) don't really have that much in terms of camera bags. Meh.
And online sucks, too, because if they actually give the interior measurements of a bag, more often than not those are different depending on which site you're looking at. You would not BELIEVE how many camera bags from all over the fucking world I have looked at in the last few weeks. And if any of you ever needs a surefire business idea to make them a millionaire in no time: non-crappy looking camera bags. Seriously. Never been done before. Not kidding. You're welcome.
And also it's additionally complicated by the fact that I think I need 2 bags: a big one to put the camera and other stuff (as in non-camera related stuff) into, because who wants to always lug their camera around separately? But of course even if you buy a big one, as soon as you put the camera insert in it, there's not exactly much room left except for multiple lenses and camera equipment and shit, which I don't even have. So I'll be fucked if I know the solution here.
The second bag would have to be a small one, probably a fitted "holster" one, even though those look even worse than the others. Because sometimes you just want to take the camera. Or, being a girl, you already have a purse and want to take the camera along. E.g. I'm going to a wedding in a few weeks and I have this most fabulous little clutch and I want to take the camera so I can't exactly go there all dressed up with my little clutch and a big fat messenger bag slung across the other shoulder. So I need something small and "camera-looking" for the camera so the other guests won't think I dressed myself while drunk.
Problem here: The stupid camera is too big for 99% of the fitted holster bags. Even though it only has the 18-55 lens! Well, and two filters, but meh.
And of course I'm also in some sort of deeper crisis about my camera and stuff. I want a zoom but, in true me fashion, I don't want to pay 100-200€ for a not-so-good generic one but rather want the super good one, which of course costs 800€ which is way too fucking expensive. So I don't have a zoom. But I want one.
And also I'm still mad at the camera for not having black & white. And I don't know a good software to use instead to turn the pics b&w after the fact. And even if I did, it wouldn't be free - and of course I HATE "photoshopping" pictures, out of principle, out of laziness, and out of the fact that it kills my laptop's measly 256mb RAM. So I would have to upgrade my RAM which I want to but don't want to because I don't know how to do it and who knows how long I still have this laptop so why pour money into it now?
So I'm mopey because I don't have a zoom and can't shoot in black&white. Even though I've hardly even used the thing yet because I suck just that much. So I'm thinking I should maybe exchange the Nikon for a Fuji like Ruffy has one, one that may not be an SLR but hey, it has b&w and it has this gigantic zoom range right built in. And he's taking great photos, right? And then I remember that I compared a billion cameras before buying mine and ended up buying mine, and that Ruffy already said way early in the game that his next camera will be a Canon 350what'sitsname, so apparently he wants an SLR even though his Fuji takes good pics so why would I even think about trading mine in for a Fuji?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
[/stream-of-consciousness rant <.<]
And during all this thinking and moping, not one picture has been taken.

Oh yes, I stacked them. Quite annoying. I think it took a while to make it sturdy. You're the second person to seem amazed at me doing that.. hrm.I wouldn't necessarily call it "amazed". More like "head-shakingly incredulous". ;)
I don't like zoos, for the same reason I don't like circuses. They whore animals. Yeah. And I always feel fucking sorry for some polar bear traipsing around his cell in 30 degree heat in the summer. And the big cats who just pace back and forth in their enclosures that are ridiculously tiny (even if they are huge and brand new) compared to where they should be living. Meh.
Lucky, as in "Lucky shot"?Pretty much, yeah. Lucky as in lucky to be there when he did that (I just realized that I have no idea what either the birds or what they do with their tail feathers are called in English, hmm) and lucky as in lucky to be standing at a good angle to him.

Because I'm going off to study photography when I graduate. You know, be all uber sophisticated and such. I've had my fuji longer now, and I really like it a lot more than I did a few months ago. Does so much, and I really love my two different macro settings. And it takes B&W!
Get the fuji. You'll like it.
And if you get the fuji, get this (http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/444764625.htm) bag. It's what I have.

So, as you can see, I have a slight fascination for the sun. I just happen to find a lot of peace in watching sunrises and sunsets. Life can be hectic, and yet, if you take the time to simply watch the earth turn and do it's thing, you can find some meaning in it all.
All taken with a Nikon Coolpix 2500. Not the best camera I know, but it's decent enough.

Try metering off the flame, so that's the part that's exposed properly. A 10-second exposure should also be good. If you can, maybe go even longer, but remember to use the smallest aperature (highest #). Also, take notes on the exposure settings you try, so you can relate them to the different pictures. I hate it when I get a great effect, but can't remember how I got it!

Try a small aperture and long exposure. It makes the flame stretch and blur creating an interesting effect, but anything or anyone should appear without blur if you time it just perfect.

For me personally, the choice of a dSLR was obvious, because I have over 25 years experience shooting with a film SLR. I wanted something as much like what I was used to as possible, and did not want to give up viewing through the lens. You've already got a dSLR. Would your local camera mechant be willing to "swap out" for one like Ruffy's on a trial basis, for perhaps a holiday weekend? You could try it out and see what you think. Absolutely nothing can trump how you feel using the camera. The "big boys" can put theirs where they need an extended exposure ;)

I don't want to go to my local camera merchant because I don't have one, I bought my camera, lens, and rest individually on eBay...
And ach, I don't know. Starting this thread and seeing how other people were taking all these great pics made me think I could totally be this great hobby photographer and hence would need a "real", "serious" camera and stuff - and then it turns out that I sit before it like before a maths book, what with all the apertures and ISOs and shit. And I'm apparently, as it turns out, by far not such an eager "Well, just try it for fucks sake" experimenter as Ruffy is. I should have known, really. And I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate working on the pics on the computer. I still can't get over the fact that I can take 100 pictures of the same tree in slightly different angles and stuff yet do not even have a software that allows me to view them side by side in anything larger than thumbnails (well, not all 100 at the same time, of course :p). And my computer doesn't have enough RAM to comfortably manage tons of pics on it.
And I already posted this rant a couple weeks ago.
So yeah, seriously, all I want to know is: Are the pictures really better? In what way? Less noise in darker settings? Is that all? Is that Important with a big I? Will I regret selling the SLR before even really trying it out? (what a stupid question :rolleyes)

What kinds of lenses do you have, CI?
Since I just went digital, I only have the one autofocus 18-55mm zoom that came with. As far as I can tell, the only differences between a dSLR and a "point'n'shoot" are:
I "see what I get" by viewing through the lens. You can watch the screen on a p'n's, but sometimes it's washed out by the light you're in, and it always eats battery, which limits how much shooting you do more than memory.
The mirror/shutter mechanism on a dSLR is faster than the electronic shutter on a p'n's, so I can "pew pew pew" a bunch of shots faster, and without lag, with the dSLR.
When I am ready to make the investment, I'll be able to add however many specialty lenses I desire, including those "epeen" telephotos I lust for.
That's it. Image quality is a function of sensor size, and most p'n's have 5 to 8 megapixels, these days. My dSLR has 6.3, so it would be easy to do better.
If you're intimidated by all the stuff your dSLR can do (and I'm just now, after 3 years, getting beyond having a damn expensive point'n'shoot), get something you're comfortable with. Photography is like yoga, it's better to do some, than to do none at all.
And why don't you see more of my pics? Meh. Partly, I have less time to shoot than I'd like. Partly, I've just, in the last month, started learning the software (I have the same problem about fussing for hours over a picture on the computer, although it may soon become my new CWOT). And, partly, I'm not convinced that putting my stuff out on the net is totally in my best interests. I know I download a lot of images. I'd never claim them as my own, but it is a concern.
Anyway, hope this windbag of a post helps :)

Mine's a Nikon D50, it also came with the 18-55 (except of course I bought them separately). Ken Rockwell said the lens is surprisingly good, and since everybody else believes him, I'm not about to start doubting.
Don't you get frustrated with having this big fancy camera and not being able to actually really ZOOM anywhere, though? Like, I think with that half-kilo of hardware in your hand you should totally be able to zoom in on someone else's newspaper 5 tables over. *nods*

To tell you the truth, I actually never even knew (much less noticed) the "actually see the picture you're gonna take through the viewfinder, too". I always thought all cameras did that. Just learned otherwise a couple days ago when looking something up.
I *do* place a lot of importance on an optical viewfinder, though, which is one of the drawbacks of Ruffy's camera. It's because I never had a digital camera before, so all this newfangled stuff is still weirding me out a bit. ;)

God, how I covet the Nikkor 18-200... *covets* *doesn't want to spend €800 on a fucking lens when she can't even use the camera right* *covets some more*

My dSLR has 6.3, so it would be easy to do better.ZOMG I actually know something - as far as I gathered (and it really said so on many different sites so I'm not making it up) SLR sensors are always larger, which makes for a more nuanced, sharper, and less noisy image. Sooo.... now that I see myself saying this, of course, I'm kinda realizing that "sensor size" here can obviously NOT mean "number of pixels".... Does that even still make sense? *confused*
If you're intimidated by all the stuff your dSLR can do (and I'm just now, after 3 years, getting beyond having a damn expensive point'n'shoot), get something you're comfortable with. Photography is like yoga, it's better to do some, than to do none at all.Yup. That is EXACTLY why I'm thinking about switching. I tend to do the "going for the best/biggest thing and then never actually using it" thing a lot, with all kinds of things... >.<
But of course, hello, I'd just as much have to go and learn hoe to do all the stuff that Ruffy's camera can do. I mean, it can do at least as much as an SLR...
But the 3 years are a consolation, really. =)
And why don't you see more of my pics? Meh. Partly, I have less time to shoot than I'd like. Partly, I've just, in the last month, started learning the software (I have the same problem about fussing for hours over a picture on the computer, although it may soon become my new CWOT) CWOT?

*will look at pictures later*
Ruffy, or somebody else in da know: Tell me if a dSLR's pictures are really that noticably better than those of a high end "normal" camera like Ruffy's. Pleeeeeease tell me.
I don't know if I should trade in my brand new dSLR for one like Ruffy's. I mean, I already have a dSLR, why would I trade down??
But Ruffy's pics look good, right? And there's the huge zooooooooooom. And stuff.
I am so fucking frustrated about this. *cries*
its a difficult question, but i should guess it mostly comes down to control and aperature for the difference. dSLRs tend to have wider (~ 67mm) lenses meaning more light can hit the sensor in x amount of time. the sensors used in dSLRs are also larger than those used in other cameras (apart from the new 3/4 format dSLRs coming out now), meaning you get more light per pixel as each pixel is literally larger. this leads to higher quality, especially at high ISO levels.
as to whether the difference is noticable, at low ISO's, i don't really know. i'd say yes, but then for a hobbyist photographer it probably won't be a big deal.
the issue of manual control is also important, as on dSLRs you actually control the camera's mechanical settings, wheras on most bridge cameras you simply adjust an electronic emulation of these mechanical settings. and the manual settings tend not to be as wide-ranging, but it does depend on the model. my little Fuji 5600 has great control, especially over ISO, though it lacks good EV compensation (only +/- 1 stop) and of course its aperature is lacking.
anyhoo, point is its a difficult question. if you really want to shoot in black and white then you could change. but then you can also convert the colour photos later on your computer.
the selling point of a bridge camera would be (and was, to me) the zoom, considering an equivalent zoom EF lens for my canon would cost the best part of £700, and i bought the whole new camera for under £200...
by the way, i'm not active in this thread at the moment as i have little time for photography and have become slightly "meh" to the whole thing. probably largely because i was going to get to do the studio photography for a series of recipe leaflets but now that's fallen through it seems.
plus coming here and looking at all you people's great photos makes me all jealous, heh

Yeah, about the manual control... I really think I should stop posting here to whine and instead get myself behind that stupid camera already and get to trying. Right now, manual control is about as useful to me as a stickshift on a space ship. :/

Yeah, those really are my two biggest points in this - b&w and this insanely incredible 18-300 zoom, which is apparently really excellent, to boot, according to the dpreview site you linked me to once (and which is the bestest site ever).

I really wanted the Nikon, but I have several friends that use Canon. The kicker for me was Nikon = seperate purchase, propriatary software, Canon = included Adobe Elements.

I think one of the differences with using an DSLR in contrast to point and shoot is that you are eventually forced to understand the relationship between aperture, speed, light etc. Saying that however PnS perhaps allow you to concentrate on the composition of images without worrying about these other aspects. Absolutely empthaise with the angst of trying to read a manual and the maths of it. I've recently started carrying around an old light meter with me and comparing that with what the camera suggests to me. I think if I can get my head around the "maths" it will allow me to bend the rules. Adjusting an f stop could be the difference between a burnt out sky and good colour.

And they only look okay because of the small size. If you go to "All Sizes" and look at them in size large, you can see all the pixellation from the scanner and the spots and scratches and dust flakes of the paper prints. :P This one (http://www.flickr.com/photos/whereyouthinkyougoing/92756120/in/set-72057594055931133/) is the worst, because the print already had these horizontal white stripes in it, but bah, it's a tiny pink thunderstorm so who cares! :p

I don't really want to know how it works, I just want it to look good. Except of course that if you want it to look really good, you have to learn how it works. Gnarf.
But yeah, hell, when I took my last big batch of pics back around New Years, I liked it a lot because they looked really pretty good (well, considering I just "pointed and shot") so I really should take the camera and go take pictures and start studying the manual for real this time...

Hmm, this Picasa thing isn't half bad. The biggest plus, I think, is that the pictures load really fast. Though Photobucket's black background is better. Meh. I'm still waiting for the perfect online photo album site.

Thanks also whereyouthinkyourgoing was not sure I was making sense. I get scared when topics such as f stops come up feeloing everybody will know more then me. I think this is part of human nature and to get better at anything you have to miove out of your comfort zone. However am gradually picking things up there are some good books out there and some of the photography magazines offer good guidance. By the way I am a he :)
Reading that and then looking at your pics is encouraging, so yay. :)
The Zooomr site drives me crazy - is there really no way to look at all the pictures in a set without having to go back to the set starting page after each pic? Or am I just being thick? I ended up just going backwards through your whole photostream by clicking the line of pics on the top.
But the pics make up for it. =)

I took a page out of The Wu-Tang Clanz's book re. the sparseness of his flickr page and edited my pics from earlier this year into one short, concise set. Hatchet job, that was, and tbh I should probably still get rid of about 18 more of the 20 pics left, but eh, I'm just a noob, it's not exactly like I have better material. :p
Here it is, in a handy slide show: http://www.flickr.com/photos/whereyouthinkyougoing/sets/72157600218573462/show/

Thanks again Had wondered why my viewing figures had shot up so much in the last couple of hours. :)
I'll try and put links into my sets pictures so that you can move through the set. May not get round to this till the weekend. However I think most of the pictures you have chosen are probably not in any of the sets. I have not tried many of the picture sites but Zoomr has struck me as quite a supportive friendly place where people are encouraged to look at and comment on each others pictures.
The Vase on Steel (http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/GarethT/1101225)and Orchid (http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/GarethT/1101165) are from my first grouping of pictures where I have really worked at the set up. However bar camera all else was based on IKEA products. I.e reflective surfaces are kitchen spash backs lit with a cheap 10 pound halogen desk light.
mouse (http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/GarethT/974232) I got this shot by chance while visiting my parents. Was photographing flowers when mouse appears chased by cat and running over my father's foot. While someone else removed the cat I quickly photographed the mouse. I now carry a camera with me all the time you never know what you will see around the corner.
Nykvarn lake (http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/GarethT/882195) This an application of the rule of thirds which i kept hearing about but could find no explanation. basically if you imagine your image as a noughts and crosses board points of interest should concentrate along the lines especially where they connect (hope that makes sense) this image taken with that in mind and then cropped in Photoshop.

Nah, don't worry. That would be an insane amount of work. I had actually tried it with the "sculptures" set until I realized I couldn't actually look at the 8 pics in the set without clicking back a page and then clicking the next pic to look at.
I have not tried many of the picture sites but Zoomr has struck me as quite a supportive friendly place where people are encouraged to look at and comment on each others pictures. It's pretty cool with the location spotter thingy. And I saw how many times your pictures had already been viewed even though you only put them up at the end of March. So it definitely seems to have really active and interested people. And it's probably not as big as other sites yet so your pics won't get lost among the masses.

Had a quick glance at your pictures Nadkor would love to be able to take pictures of this quality. The sharpness colour and definition are brilliant. Only criticism is some pictures might benfit from tighter cropping e.g. in http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1002051bn7.jpg wonder if you would want crop out spectators feet from the top of picture and the bodyless bottom which is on the right the of the picture.
My pictures (http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/GarethT)
Well, none (with the exception of the first which was a photoshop tester just to see what it would come out like) have had much work done to them (except for reducing in size, which helps make things look sharper I suppose), but there are a few others which would really benefit, so cropping would definitely be something to consider.
Anyway, here's what that one looks like cropped:

The other technique which may have possibilities is combining different photographs into layers and editting out those bits which detract from main focus of image. I think some new tools in Photoshop CS3 make this easier. If this works may avoid the need for a crop in some shots.

Yeah, I've actually had a lot of people say that. Even sports professionals who come into work have said it. The problem is that the races are on Saturdays, and I work on Saturdays. I can't afford to quit and take a gamble on my photography; if I did I wouldn't actually be able to afford to travel to the races to take photos, so it's a bad situation.
If I could afford to, and afford a new camera, I would in an instant. And I know I could start making decent(ish) money after a while. I just can't afford to get started.

Okay, this is probably going to be really stupid, but could you maybe find a way to not work Saturdays? (I don't know what you work as, so I don't know if that would merely involve switching shifts or actually finding a new job...)
Have you ever tried to sell the pictures you have? (Again, I don't even know whom you'd sell them to - newspaper & magazines, I suppose, right?) I mean, at least that way you could get enough money together for the "new camera" part of the deal.
And since you already say you think you could probably live off the photography, maybe looking for another "day job" would be really a risk worht taking. Or is it impossible to get a job in Belfast?

Well, I work on Saturdays to cover someone else's day off; he plays football on Saturday afternoons so I couldn't get him to change it. If I could I definitely would.

I suppose newspapers, magazines, and racing fans. Possibly the teams and riders/drivers too, I suppose. I dunno.

I couldn't get another job that I actually find vaguely enjoyable, with decent pay, and with flexible(ish) hours. Especially not with the summer coming soon.

I mean, that's awfully nice of you and I can see how it's not really possible for you to go and say "Hey, I don't want to cover your day off anymore" (I mean, it's certainly possible, but I can see how you wouldn't want to do it).
But at the same time - really?! I mean, would HE do the same for YOU? You're talking about the thing you'd want to be doing for the rest of your life, not just about some measly hobby.
Or, more practically: can't somebody else work Saturdays for him????????

Well the thing is that I work part time; three days a week, covering other people's days off. That's why my job exists, really. There are only four of us who work there, and the other three of us are in on Saturdays, so I can't even get someone else to cover him. It's a great situation, except for the fact that I can't get Saturdays off (although I was able to get last Sat off for the North West 200, where I took those photos).

Damn Nadz, I think you really should consider that leap. You're really good at something you actually dig in not just a passing way. A lot of people would kill for that combination. I know it's a sketchy leap, I stayed at a shitball job that I was mildly okay with for freakin' years until more or less being forced to take the leap. It did suck a bit for a while and does continue to suck a little now, but honestly it's way freakin' better going to work when it's something you dig and not tolerate. You really should find a way to make this work, you'll really be happy that you did.

The blue is pool liner, then the green ickyness is my pool water. Of course, there's a rip in the pool liner that happened sometime durring the year.
*makes sure to note that it has been drained and a new liner has been purchased*

But man, for a scar from a big surgery just a few days ago, that's a really nice looking scar. Those surgeons did a good job!
More shots later, but I wanted to post this: <3 (http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h100/oneseventwonine/IMG_4308.jpg)

I don't know what pool liner is. :(
I'm guessing some sort of cover (that just happens to be light blue?) but why would you only cover the edge of the pool?

A pool liner is what we use to, you know, line the pool so the water doesn't just soak into the ground.
Like, how a trash bag keeps the trash in?

Oh.
So it's not a pool made out of cement?
I didn't know that you could have an in-ground pool basically just lined with plastic, and it looks all rectangular, too (in your photo we can see where the walls meet the floor). I only know the plastic liner thingy from when people put little ponds in their garden, and those are just wide, shallow holes they dug.
But so I was right that the pool wall (which turns out to be plastic liner) below the water line is all ratty with algae and above the water line it's all smooth and pristine (or at least looks that way because it's mercifully out of focus. ;)).
EDIT: Duh! It's not an in-ground pool to begin with: http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/newcam/?action=view¤t=may21197.jpg
I thought it was because of some earlier pictures.

Whereyouthinkyougoing I sorted some of the set links at the weekend to make the flowers all link together however Zooomr being upgraded as of now to mark 3 with lots of new features. Not sure therefore will make links redundant. Zooomr3 does look like it will be impressive http://beta.zooomr.com .

finally got around to scanning my paper photos in. they're all from about 3 or 4 years ago. you'll have to excuse the pin holes in some of them, i didn't have blutak so they got pinned to my wall.

these are all from new zealand (i'm especially proud of the sunrise one because i drove 30km in pitch blackness over dodgy dirt roads in a car with broken shocks to get to the most easterly part of the country to take it and it was just perfect, the photo really doesn't do it justice):

Ohhhh, cool! The corkscrew is such an awesome corner. It and Eau Rouge must be the two best in the world.
And, yeah, no Nadkor?* You've got cars off the ground in the corkscrew, how much better do you want? :p
And you got the second Mustang sliding there. Nice work.

Ohhh, talking about WRC, I should be at Rally Ireland this year (woo), first year it's been a round of the WRC. Should be awesome; dusty tarmac country lanes + the WRC. What could possibly be bad about that?

that's cool :D i don't know what the ticketing costs would be like in ireland but in NZ i got an all-stage pass for ~NZ$90 which was awesome, i was able to follow the teams around from one stage to the next, saw nearly all of them. the super special stage was amazing, there was torrential rain and you really had to hold your breath watching them slide around that little course!
