Okay, it has been a while since someone posted in PM's original photography thread, and every time I see people posting in the "Artists of NS" thread I'm sorely reminded that I can't paint or sculpt...
So, for all the similarly impaired or inclined, here's a whole new, fresh photography thread. It made more sense to start a new one, not least because neither PM nor I really have any new pictures to put up but still want to see some new stuff of other people out there. :p
I'll steal the introductory paragraphs from PM's original thread, because he's the actual photographer here:
°°°°°°°°
This is a thread for all the photographers - budding, professional, hobbyists, all of you - of NS general. It's been a while since we've had one :).
So share your favourite photos, what camera(s) do you use, what kind of photography do you enjoy? Anything and everything photo related...

yayness :)
i think i'll start us off with the only 'new' picture i have (it was taken in january sometime but i only recently got my hands on it) here (http://www.hlj.me.uk/pics/sunsets/_MG_7404.jpg)
got tonnes of others (more recent) but they're all of food and fruit/veg/etc, farmers' markets and stuff like that, and not really the kind of thing worth sharing :P

Okay, Here are my pictures. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/whereyouthinkyougoing/sets/72057594055931133/)
They're all I have online at the moment.
I'm really just a tourist with an old non-digital point-and-shoot camera. But it's a pretty good one and it does have a relatively wide (28mm) angle for a non-fancy camera, which is my favourite feature because I'm a sucker for wide, epic landscapes.
I definitely want to really learn how to photograph one day. *nods*
For now, I've just scanned some of my better paper prints and put them up on flickr. They're mainly from the southwestern US and Bolivia, but really just random pretty pictures from all kinds of places. And they're 100% non-photoshopped. :p
ETA: You can click on them to make them bigger, obviously. The "slideshow" function is a bit wonky, though - the pics look better because of the black framing, but since they are scans instead of digital photos, they don't all quite line up with the frame... <.<

i think i've seen them before, but i'll say it again: you have some really fantastic pictures in there :) :fluffle:
seriously, it seems you have a good eye for composition, angle, a good photo opportunity (it takes a special eye to see an interesting shot in everyday life stuff like palm trees or paving slabs), good eye for colour... i think you're doing a great job with that little camera and would advise you to save up and get yourself a decent "cheap" (they're not really cheap but you know what i mean - 'entry level') digital SLR like the Nikon D50 or Canon 350D (IIRC)
i especially enjoy your detail shots - obviously the landscape ones are stunning and beautiful (of course!), but, in a way, anyone can take those kind of pictures (you just have to be where the stunning scenery is), so the closeups and the like (like the palm tree and things) are the ones that impress me :)
and as i said last time, this one really kicks ass http://www.flickr.com/photos/whereyouthinkyougoing/92735571/in/set-72057594055931133/ *nods*

@ Deep Kimchi - would you mind putting them up as links? Esp. since there are quite a few of them and they're rather big? I didn't put a 56k modem warning in the title, and it'll be chaos if everyone starts posting theirs as full-sized images, too, not to mention if others then quote them.
Thank you.
ETA: This kind of means that it'd be great if [NS]Liasia could edit his posts, too. Thanks.

LOL. I'm only 5'3", not too short. Not too tall either.
I know they're not professional grade photos, but they're not too bad for taking them on my cell phone I think. I just have a thing for skies that have a lot of purple and pink in them.

I love the 2 fishermen. I prefer bw and like photos with people (not posing). Great composition with all the lines. It would be perfect if the head of the man in the front wouldn't cut the horisontal line on the background.
I also like the metro picture. I've noticed I like pictures which are both blur and sharp (especially if the blurness is caused by a motion.)
Nice.

Aww, thanks so much! :)
I totally agree on the landscapes thing - if the motive looks good enough, it's hard to really screw up the picture, even if you have no idea what you're doing.
And believe it or not, I actually have my sister's old camera (which isn't actually old) tucked in my closet, I can't be bothered to go look what brand/type it is, but it's a majorly professional looking, digital one (she used it when she was working at a newspaper). Thing is, she isn't here to teach me how to use it and she also lost the manual, so I really should take a photography class. I'm sure it would rock to take pictures with a really good camera.
Like I said, the one I have is really good for a point-and-shoot and always pwns my friends' on vacation, but I remember taking a close-up of a flower in Malaysia with a friend who had a "real" camera, and I was completely happy with my frame until she let me look through her finder - OMG, the difference was incredible. Her camera made it look like some fancy-ass National Geographic nature shoot. Pouted a bit and been determined to take that stupid class ever since. :p
Oh, and you can be as gushy as you like, any time. :p :) I kinda like that concrete shot, too, because it makes most people wonder why on earth that word would be etched into concrete. (Well, most people I know, anyway. San Franciscans won't wonder too much, one should guess :p).

and btw, you can learn a lot about cameras and photography online and from books, which is obviously easier (and cheaper :P) than going on a proper course or anything. there's some great info here http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/ (plus its the best camera review/info site i've found on the net :))
the best way to learn is just to go out there and experiment with different things and see what you come up with (easier with a digital, too... and a SLR or more-complicated-than-point-and-click kind of camera will allow you to learn more and be more creative, have more control, etc :))
good luck! :D

Looks almost as if it's two photos stiched together. It actually really does. *rubs eyes* I think it's because of the large surfaces in the lower half and mainly that dark rock in the middle in the foreground - it's very black and clearly delineated, yet surrounded by the moving water, that kind of throws your eyes a bit.

Nice.
Those, along with the jousting knight in b/w, are probably 3 of the best b/w photos I've taken. There's an emotional impact that b/w creates that can be lost in color photos - I like working in both mediums, but b/w often gives more punch to candid photography. Thanks for commenting on those photos!
As far as two fishermen is concerned, it was literally a moment in time - without doing some serious climbing or standing in water I don't think I could have kept the balance between the two fishermen in the photo while preserving the horizontal pier in the background entirely, so I made the best compramise I could. :-)
The Metro shot was trickier, but I was able to set up better. The light was very low in there and I was not able to use a tripod, so I shot 400 tri-x film and pushed the speed to 800, then found myself a nice column to brace myself against to take the photo as the train pulled through the station. I actually took a number of shots this way - only one turned out decently, but one is all I was looking for.
Thanks again!
Thanks! :) And yeah, that beach shot was really lucky (Shout out to the compliant sea gulls! ;p).
I still have your wonderful (eeek, I sound so cheesy! But I'm trying to phase "awesome" out off my vocabulary and don't really know what to replace it with :S - so bear with me with the cheesiness, will ya?) view of Mont St. Michel (http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j41/stardust923/Random%20pics/Footprintsinthesand.jpg) as my desktop picture. Depending on mood, it gets interchanged with Carisbrooke's dramatic "God coming down to earth" cloud-and-sunbeam picture she posted last time and this one of the Easter Islands, courtesy of the New York Times:
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2006/04/30/travel/30easter.2.jpg
It obviously looks much better full size, but I doubt the guy is an NSer, so I'm certainly not going to give him a platform here. ;p
I'm pretty fond of that Mont St. Michel shot too, and quite flattered that it's on someone's desktop. :) Although, my favourite right now is this one (http://s77.photobucket.com/albums/j41/stardust923/Random%20pics/?action=view¤t=Flowersonthelawn.jpg).

Oh, the knight was great too! Just like with the 2 fisherman, a tiny difference would make it amazingly great (Just a tiny bit more sharpness) Don't get me wrong, with amazingly great I mean 1st class pro pics.
I like to spend time in dark room too and that's one reason more why I prefer bw. I mostly use tri-x 400 and I like to push it up a little bit. I haven't done any photographying for ages, just clicking with my pocket digi. We are building a house at the moment -with dark room...I can't wait. I've used my bathroom until now. (the headaches...)

When where you here? I recognize some of those places, so I've stood where you've stood...I'm not sure what that matters. Maybe we saw each other and toatally didn't know it. I might have almost run you down trying to get through the city or something. Who knows. Oh, years ago. Those California pics must be from '98 or so. But hey, you're about my age, so yeah, maybe we totally did meet. Maybe you were the guys always blocking the view. Or holding us up in his slow-moving, decrepit van. Hmm. Cool. :D
I actually was in Santa Cruz, too. But my camera died - of course - and all I got was a pic of the surfer statue :p and one of the inside of some café we ate at.
The camera also died in Monterey, which just about killed me, old Steinbeck fan that I am. Grrrrrrr.

Those are actually one my favourite flowers. They're called Löwenmäulchen in German, which translates to "small mouths of lions". So you can see my delight when I first heard what they were called in English. I loved to make them snap as a kid (well, okay, still do <.<). They have a real childhood kind of quality to me. The floral equivalent to the bumblebee, one might say. And to think I got both of those in one thread! *happy sigh*
Erm, sorry, bit of a tangent there. But look how cute they are! :p

In San Francisco, despite my photographing phobia, I tend to spend my time sneaking into tourists' snapshot backgrounds. When I take Veronica tourists tend to take photos of her, occasionally posing in front of her. Though she gets up staged by the 'decorated' ones pretty easily. I'm okay with that.

You don't see Series Landys that often (they started being built in the 50's) but Defenders aren't uncommon.
Don't want to hijack this too much.

I'd actually appreciate non-spamming, seeing as the last thread of this kind stayed around for a pretty long time. Not on page 1, obviously, but it's one of the few topics you can actually dig out without being guilty of grave digging - it just wouldn't make sense to start a new one every time someone had a picture they'd wanted to put up.
So have off, ye evil spammers! See you a few threads over. :p

Hmm, Rural Life, aha, good to know.
That will probably rule out the first one - unless you tell them the thing grew in your garden or something. Too bad.
The second one is good, what with the piece of fence visible. Very rural. :p
I like the third one, too (and they do have extra sub-categories for plants and stuff).
For that green funky plant, I'd pick one of the first three rather than the last two, and I'm actually leaning toward pic No. 5 (the last close-up). The light is best in that one.
The shed & leaves fits with the topic.
And definitely the brick wall, I like that.
Of the two tree shots, I think I like the black&white one better.
Hmm, yeah, I'm obviously no expert - just saying what I think looks best.
Oh, and I have to take the opportunity to ask you how "Schuylkill" is pronounced - I've always wondered about that.

Hm.. gimme their urls :p

That's because local newscasters in larger markets, like Philly, are almost never from those cities. They start out in Poughkeepsie or some shite and work their way up to the bigger markets.

Aw, sorry, I didn't know you were serious about the links - I thought I had described it well enough to know which ones I meant. And yeah, you almost got it right, except for the funky green plant. I meant that the 3 you linked above are, IMO, better than the other two (with the leaves & ground in the background), but I would only enter 1 of them - and for me, I like the third one best, because of the light. This one: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/contest/470f9b13.jpg.
Argh, then again, after looking at all three again... I can't decide. Someone else has to give their opinion. We have some rather professional photographers on General, maybe they'll come check back in here soon.

Cripes, I've got no clue. I haven't been to Pennsauken since I moved from there. I've been to Philly once since then, though. Lemme think...it was January 1994. An ex-gf called me up on her birthday, while we were at uni in Baltimore. She had access to a car (which was rare at our uni) and asked if there was any place special I wanted to go. I said, "Yeah, I haven't had a real Philly cheesesteak in years!"
So I got her to drive me to Geno's. She seemed to think there was going to be some other stuff happening, but she was wrong. I just wanted the cheesesteak. It was tasty!

My late grandfather built the cabin. It now belongs to my sister legally but it is the family's cabin in her mind. My sister worries about fires and building codes overly much so after 70 years of fires in that stove and the one before (which finally rusted out 10 years ago) I recently installed tiles and flame proof boards around and under the stove. It is prettier and easier to sweep ashes from than wooden floors though.

We don't call it spelunking. It's called caving. For the reason that every time a newspaper prints an article about some moron who goes into the cave with only one source of light and no batteries to do a change should those go dead, or does not consult the weather report to see if there is rain in the forecast when he/she is going to go into a cave that has a potential for flooding, the headline usually reads......
Spelunker Trapped In Cave
Or, in some cases, something even worse.
It's tantamount to calling a black person a Negro. Technically accurate, but it won't win you any points with the person who is the object of the reference.
Generally I go into limestone caves in the midwest. I haven't gotten into the pit caves yet, mostly because my wife doesn't really want me to (she worries), and there are still plenty of horizontal caves around here to keep me busy.
I have posted some of my pictures in the past, but after awhile the sites either delete them, or they demand you but something from them to continue hosting them (are you listening, Kodak?), so I do not have any up at the moment.
Have any suggestions?

Aw, and I was so proud to know a fancy word like spelunking. :(
I didn't know it was used like that (although I do have to say that it *did* always sound funny).
Generally I go into limestone caves in the midwest. I haven't gotten into the pit caves yet, mostly because my wife doesn't really want me to (she worries), and there are still plenty of horizontal caves around here to keep me busy. Yeah, I'd worry too. But that's because I'd be scared myself, so yeah.
Good old Indiana limestone! But yeah, limestone makes for good and many caves (my home region has those, too), so I can see how you won't run out of them any time soon.

Yes its the biggest one within slingshot distance of the cabin. It's a sugar pine. I dont know how old it is, but it is easily many hundreds of years old and surely predates any European exploration of the West coast of America. It is still strong and healthy. I tried every way I could to get a pic of it from top to bottom but My lens wont zoom out quite enough to get the whole tree. Here are two other shots of it.

God, I'd die of fear. I can do caves if they're well-lit and full of other tourists :p, but to have complete darkness encroaching all around me as soon as that little source of light is pointed elsewhere would make me start gibbering.
I've always thought those drape-like kind of features looked particularly interesting and fragile (like here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36257877@N00/193608305/in/photostream/) in top right).
The top half of this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36257877@N00/193608307/in/photostream/) one looks terribly like some hideous, tentacled, slimy alien thing - between this and the cow tongue (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36257877@N00/194597763/in/photostream/), I'm all squicked out.
I love the colors in this one (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36257877@N00/194587948/in/photostream/) - and all that trouble certainly paid off here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36257877@N00/194587951/in/photostream/). :)

Do the pics load faster? Do you mean "load" as in when I just want to look at them, or "load" as in "upload" to the site? Well, in either case I don't know, actually. You'd have to try it.
I remember Harlesburg complaining that it took him forever to load my flickr page, but flickr always loads really fast for me. Uploading the pics is fast, IMO. Certainly not slow. Sorry, can't really explain it better.

The black & white has just the right "coloring" (well, you know what I mean - b&w does kinda come in different "shadings") for the images. And I have to admit that sunset is stunning (http://www.hlj.me.uk/pics/france%200706/france0706.htm) with the reflection in the lake - I don't trust you, is it photoshopped? :p

Bellamy, my just recently-turned-one-year-old Golden Retriever, cowering in my arms after being thrown in the Tennessee River for the second time. Honestly, he's a water dog, he's supposed to be more ballsy than this, but he's just my baby boy, and I spoil him, so he just wants to be on dry land in Mama's arms.

Canon 20D dSLR, set to 3200 ISO, 1/25th or 1/30th seconds shutter speed, manual focus on infinity, a camera that can take 5 full-frame shots per second for 26 shots, and almost an hour of waiting and snapping with over 200 pics taken (of which maybe 15 were passable and 5 were 'good')... and a fair bit of luck :p
the 9 MP resolution helps too cos its possible to crop and zoom in on a small portion of the picture without losing too much quality.

i don't think so, but i don't know the camera... ISO is essentially the photoreactive speed of the film for digital cameras (acts as gain basically, so for dark shots it makes the photo more grainy but you can get more light in (effectively) with the same lens aperature)
not all cameras allow you to manually change ISO, and most but dSLRs don't go much above 400 :-S
