You get a red moon during a lunar eclipse, I've got a photo somewhere (but not digital :(). That only occurs during a full moon though, so this must be atmospherics. Wish it happened round here.

up until just recently, me neither. me and the girl who pointed it out to me sort of decided it had something to do with the giant fires that currently surround us here. some days it's smokey enough to block out the mountain.

I'm totally digging the green. This and Ruffy's picture the other day really makes me want to take pictures of grass. :) And the wing action on the butterfly one is pretty damn cool. And the blue fly! Not only bright blue, but also looking almost exactly like the grass it's sitting on. Except, well, bright blue.

WoooHooooo!

After trying hundreds of combinations of f stops and "film" speeds and shutter speeds and telephoto positions I finally got a pic of the moon in a dark sky that almost looks like the moon! I know its fuzzy but its hella crisp compared with the balls of blurry overexposed light I had been getting.

Nadkor, since we have very nearly the same cam if you have had success with shooting the moon and would like to share Id like to hear about it.

f8.0 1/125th second ISO 80 and 320 mm.

Hopefully I can improve from here but taking a pic of the moon at dark night is more difficult than a person might think!

very good! and it is very hard, i know :P

your ISO looks very low though - might this be because high iso overexposes the moon into a big white blob?

Well since I was shooting by hand instead of with a tripod and I was at maximum optical zoom to get some detail, and my smallest aperature with the zoom is f8 I thought I could use even higher shutter speeds and higher iso but I never found a happy medium there. so I went with slower shutter and ISO 80 eventually.

I think part of it was I had the focus area set to a wider pattern than the moon is. Ill try again tonight with spot focusThe poor camera kept trying to focus on the edge of the moon or outer space. Light metering in the camera was just nowhere near right either. The camera wanted to comprimise between pitch black and the bright moon which just didnt work at all.

(1/640s shutter, f5.6, ISO 100 (yes, low did work best heh - the moon is damn bright!), -1.5 steps exposure comp)

don't have a very telephoto lens though (only 80mm) so if its a bit blurry tis cos i resampled it (it were tiny :()

OK, using more or less the same camera as Not Bad (but 5 megapixel instead of the 6 he has), I got this (with a touch of sharpening):

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/34/mooncj4.jpg

I think that if I use a tripod I could get a much better quality picture. Had to up the ISO (and therefore the noise) to compensate for the quick shutter needed to stop it blurring in my hand.

Is Nicolette your dog? Im considering going temporarily insane and getting a puppy that looks very similar to Nicolette. I already have a dog but there is something specia; about the pup, and he needs somebody to adopt him after all.

I got my dog Vida HERE (http://www.alphacanine.org/) She was over 5 years old at the time and had never known any home but the streets as a puppy then Alpha canines kennels. It's been a struggle getting a five year old dog who lacked enough human attention and interaction her whole life to come to terms with being a pet and companion with some manners but Vida is worth it. It is a very pleasant surprise for an animal sanctuary whenever someone adopts an older strong willed dog instead of a cute pup.

Well.. my birthday is coming up.. *hints to parents*

Kinda.

What is that f8 thing about?

f8 is an fstop. Basically the bigger the f stop number is the smaller the opening is that lets light into the camera. So f8 will make a darker picture than f5 and way darker than f 2.8

Oh that article showed me that I bought a good enough camera in its class (telephoto of 10X or higher for about $300) but that a panasonic DMC FZ5 takes much clearer pics and has a 12X telephoto for about $320. Or $250 at refurb depot. So ven though I like my camera very much, I might have done better if I had researched a little bit and found the Panasonic instead.

Heres a link to the panasonic test

Thank you kindly WYTYG. I wish that you'd get up off your no-picture-taking-lately butt to get out there and snap some photos too. I like your photos and you never share some anymore. I know, I just realized that the other day now that the thread is continuously hopping. But... I don't feel like walking through the city and taking pics of random things, I dunno. And there's no vacation to fancy places coming up. Plus, the camera isn't digital and my scanner is a huge pain in the ass. I'd take some non-artsy pics with my cell phone which has a pretty decent camera, but I'm still unsuccessfully trying to get the stupid thing to release its pics to the computer. Grrrrrr. I took some pics for Neu Leonstein's "A day in your life in pictures" thread weeks ago but they're still stuck in the phone.

How do you get to skip past everyone in line? Ive got to go to Disneyland in April and I want to skip past everyone too!

This was the situation. We went with my mother-in-law. If you've ever watched Poltergeist, you've seen Tangina Barrons, the short psychic lady. That is basically what my mother-in-law looks like. We spent the first day there without any money because her daughter sent the traveler's checks to Reno, CA. They ended up in Washington.

We got them on the second day of our vacation and promptly went to the Disneyland Bank to cash a few of them out. Needless to say, my sweet mother-in-law, a very wonderful woman nonetheless, forgot to sign the upper portion of the traveler's checks and they were not going to cash them. So my mother-in-law, a short elderly lady in a wheelchair, starts bawling her head off in the "happiest place in the world". We got ushered into another room, they cashed the checks and gave us line passes for the major ride attractions.

However, if you don't have a melodramatic old woman, you can just rent a wheelchair and feign an injury of some sort. Most rides allow people in wheelchairs to pass the line.

 Whatever that is, it's pretty cool.

It is a statue in Hays Galleria in Tooley Street (opposite to the London Dungeon, and near to where HMS Belfast is docked.)

I dont have a melodramatic old woman dammit. Could I borrow or rent yours for a day?

LOL. I don't know if you'd want to do that. Do you have a leg brace or something else for you to feign an injury? Otherwise, you really just have to rent a wheelchair. It doesn't work for every ride, but a lot of them also have the "fast pass" available. It's not as reliable as a whellchair though. On a side note: If you go to Caifornia Adventure, it's all wheelchair accessible. Don't count on that trick for there.

In a million years or so, that is going to be one hell of waterslide. :p

trying to ride it would be scary - the whole chain of falls drops about 300 feet rather quickly, with one big 90 foot drop in the middle (the second picture is looking vertically down at the very top of that part)

I tried to photgraph lightning once through Delicate Arch (http://www.so-utah.com/archcany/arches/delicate.jpg) in Arches National Park - damn, that would have been a really cool picture. But it was almost dark and I had no clue about night photography, so I made the shutter time way too long and I didn't have a tripod. I actually captured the lightning in a few, and some (not the ones with the lightning, of course...) aren't even blurry, but all of them have this really weird daylight lighting. Le sigh.
And I'm still pissed that I didn't catch the lightning bolts in the little pink thundercloud (http://www.flickr.com/photos/whereyouthinkyougoing/92756120/in/set-72057594055931133/). *mopes*

Pro? Nope. Not by a long shot! lol. In fact these were taken with just a battered old A95 because my main camera is in the shop. But thanks for the vote of confidence!

Like I said, dark rainy days are perfect for some things. For one thing, the colours really pop because everything is wet. And the darkness made it possible to shoot exposures between one and three seconds long to get the blur in the water. Most of these are at about 1.8 seconds, the one in the pine grove was 3 seconds and is still a hair underexposed - but I liked the gloomier feel to it.

You just couldn't take these shots on a nice sunny day. You have to be willing to be cold and miserable (it was only two degrees above freezing that day) in exchange for the best circumstances to take the shot.

Oh yeah - and you need a plastic bag and some tape to keep your camera from shorting out! lol.

Edit - Final tip: You also need a tripod, and shoot using the self-timer. Just pushing the shutter release can shake your camera, so I use the 2-second self timer to eliminate any unneccessary vibration. All I use for hiking is a cheap-assed Slik Compact tripod that I found in a bargain bin for $15. It folds down to about a foot long, extends up to four feet, and weighs almost nothing. You couldn't use it for an SLR with a heavy zoom, but for a light setup it's a nice addition to your backpack.

Thanks. These were taken in Gatineau Provincial Park, Quebec - just north of the Ottawa area where I live. And all I had with me was my crappy old Canon A95. Normally I shoot with a Canon S3IS, but it's in the shop right now with a lens motor problem. I plan to make the jump to SLR soon, but it's not in the budget quite yet.

YEah, the s9000 was one on my short-list before I bought my S3IS. For me, the final deciding factors were the image stabilization and longer zoom of the S3IS for wildlife work, and the better video quality for taking clips of the kids. But the better high-ISO and 28mm wide end (not to mention the extra 3MP) sure made me think a bit before I came to my final decision.

But I couldn't have got this shot with the s9000:

http://static.flickr.com/84/274918271_c7ac83969f_o.jpg

which I took handheld in miserable, rainy, low light on thursday at about 430mm at 1/15. I needed the IS for that.

Oh yeah - got my S3 back form the shop! :)

of course - but conversely a good camera does not a good photographer make. if you got the eye for photos and composition, colour, etc, then a good camera will make it easier for you to bring that skill and talent to the fore, and probably increase the base quality of your photography. the next step of course is reading that big ol' manual (or check out the learning section here (http://www.dpreview.com/):)) and get the most out of the manual modes of your new cammy :)

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/4899/lougherdesktop2io4.jpg

I finally have racing photos coming! But they're not going to be as cool as yours because of a few factors-

At Laguna Seca I'm not allowed as close to the track as yours seem to be.

I didn't have a zoom lense.

I might actually just suck at still photography.

But I took some from the Porscheplatz...now that I think of it most of what I took pictures of was that, and then some pictures of the Andretti Hairpin during the ALMS finale race. (where the little Porsche RS Spyders menaced the dominant diesel Audi, I was torn-big fan of the diesel, but Porsche's do rule...)

As soon as my buddy develops and scans the photos I'll get to play along.

I think that you should bat your eyelashes and use your womanly wiles on Ruffy until he loans you his old camera so you can take pictures again and share them with us here.

Good idea, but he's a tad far away, so instead here's a question to all those "in the know" about photography.

So, as I pointed out in the OP, I know *nothing* about photography. My camera is a ten years old high-grade (then) point-and-shoot.

But my sister gave me one of her cameras a few years ago that until today has only been lying around in its bag, waiting for me to finally take it out and use it already. (I'm one of those really bad "should / ought to / will do tomorrow" people >.<).

It's a Nikon F50 Mirror Reflex (I actually don't know if "mirror reflex" is the correct translation :/), it's half automatic. Not digital, obviously.
It has a 28-80 mm Tamron brand lens.

What it doesn't have is a manual, which is the biggest reason I never actually got started on using it - because I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing.

It's pretty heavy, too.

So my question is: If I finally want to start taking pictures with a "good" camera, should I use the Nikon or buy a digital one instead?
Is there still a perceptible difference between pictures made on digital media and pictures made on film?

Here are the pros & cons of going with the Nikon instead of buying a new digital one:

Pros:
- it's free! :p
- uses film, so maybe better quality pics?
- my sister gave it to me for free, and the price has since gone wayyyyy down, so if I give it back to her now without even having used it once she'll only get like 50 Euros on eBay for it... :S

Cons:
- no manual
- according to a quick glance through the internet not a user-friendly camera at all, esp. for beginners
- having to buy film
- having to pay to develop film PLUS being able only to afford cheap drugstore developing, which kinda voids any hypothetical quality advantages of film.
- pretty heavy

So basically I have no idea what to do.

Help, please? :(

ETA: On another note: think I can still use the 7 rolls of b&w film I just found that expired in 2003? :p Maybe it'll make for some funky effects! :)

The manual for the F50 (N50 in the US) is here (http://24.237.160.4/files/photography/Nikon/Manuals/N50Book/n50bk.pdf)

The downside of film is the cost of processing. You can take 10,000 pictures for the same price as taking 1. Film costs money. LOTS of money if you want to really practice and try techniques out.

Now, the nice thing is that you already have a lens for when you want to go digital. You could probably upgrade to a used D50 body on ebay for the same cost as your first 50 rolls of processed film. After that, how far you take the hobby is up to you.

technically, a diffusion filter is what you should use iirc, but in this case the lens of my camera was just really grubby :p

yes and no... its complicated :p
no percievable difference for the most part, or for most people. however, film comes in more 'varieties' and could be said to be more versatile as a photographic medium. that said, the range of digital effects you can apply to a digial photo post-processing (ie after the film image would have been processed and you have the final picture), such as in photoshop, are vast and much more versatile, as well as much easier.
one of the most important things is probably the ease of use issue. with digital, for the most part, you can just point and click and the camera will work stuff out for you. this is especially true with ISO - with film, you'd have to carry with you many different 'speeds' of film appropriate for the shoot you're doing (speed being how photosensitive the film is to light and how quickly the photo will be taken, especially important for high-shutter speed photography such as sports or wildlife). with digial cameras, you just dial in the ISO you want. that's a major consideration if you ask me, as your ISO is really important.

other than that, there's the issue of processing and cost. we recovered the cost of our first digital camera within just a few months of buying it, in terms of not getting the films
processed any more. that said, we take a lot of photos...

comments:

for pics like this (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/newcam/skittles042.jpg), be sure to dial a low f-number/aperature (ie f/2.8) as this will decrease the depth of field (area of sharp focus) and make things you're not focusing on drift out of focus, drawing attention to your subject :) (can increase the effect you've got there). playing with focus can be the easiest but most effective way of making an interesting picture out of something mundane imo
also applies here (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/newcam/new-cam592.jpg), i think.

A not bad article on some issues - certainly bringing up the point that almost all of the digital cameras do a crap job of auto white balance under dim incandescent light.

Of course, what he doesn't mention is that all of these cameras will let you quickly override that auto-balance with a white card (yes, spend that whole $1 and get one for your camera bag!).

I also take a rather dim view of someone comparing the stock, budget nikor zoom with results through a zukio prime lens.... that's apples and oranges which tilts heavily towards the film camera.

And frankly I thought the film shot of the stadium had a lot of blown highlights (the white seats in the "R", the light through the tunnel, etc.) that really bothered me. Sure, overall the shot was brighter, but he even notes that the camera shot a stop different so of course it was brighter.

I mean, I'm sorry but he shot those two cameras as if used by a beginner with who will never get past the full auto mode That may be a comparison some people want and all they ever desire to be, but in which case an SLR is already a wasted bit of overkill.

And the real fact is that most people - once they start playing with a digital - are able to quickly progress far beyond that status. Why? Because it doesn't cost a darn thing beyond a recharge and some disk space to take 5,000 or 10,000 shots to play around and try out the different settings and learn what they do. The equivalent learning curve with film is prohibitive.

*nods*

A simple set up of printer paper. The lighting is just the lamp in the corner and the computer screen.

It's the moon! :p

for pics like this (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/newcam/skittles042.jpg), be sure to dial a low f-number/aperature (ie f/2.8) as this will decrease the depth of field (area of sharp focus) and make things you're not focusing on drift out of focus, drawing attention to your subject :) (can increase the effect you've got there). playing with focus can be the easiest but most effective way of making an interesting picture out of something mundane imo
also applies here (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/newcam/new-cam592.jpg), i think.
and here (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/newcam/new-cam456.jpg), but the effect is pretty good on this one *nods*

*takes notes*

I love knowing an experienced person like you! *humps*
