Yeah, my biggest fear here is the fact that I'm on a mountian surrounded by lightning.. :p

I've been thinking.. do you think a film camera would take better shots with quick motion things?

I'm not sure if I'm making sense.. haven't slept yet..

you'd have to get the right film for it (high speed stuff) but quite possibly. depends on the camera... a film point-and-click will probably not do the job just as a digital p-and-c camera won't. what you need is manual control to be able to set the shutter speed - that's the most important thing with lightning cos its so fast. with a p-and-c even if you set the shutter speed to quick enough (1/25th sec worked for me last night till it got cloudy) the aperature will probably stay the same or something, i don't know. point is you need to be able to set the shutter speed and then be able to compensate for the darkness that that'll create either by having high speed film (high digital ISO) or by manually making the aperature wider, or both. a decent lens goes a long way to helping here too (again with the point-and-click vs SLR comparison: the former tend to have smaller maximum aperatures wheras SLR lenses are wider)

so there's no real difference in the technical setup of the shot between film and digital (except in digital even if the pic is dark due to the low shutter speed you can easily lighten it), and the important thing is having manual control over the camera. digital SLRs are expensive, but film ones are quite cheap these days... so i suppose in that sense film could be 'better' *nods*

you'd also have to be aware of winding a film camera on - when you need to be taking shots quickly (with lightning) having an auto-winder (or just a digital camera with a big buffer :p) really, really helps :P

Yup! Samsung Digimax 3000 camera if you're interested.

Not so much film versus digital as much as shutter speed and objective lense size (that's the main lense that everything comes in through). The lense I took this with:
http://www.cgnw30832.myby.co.uk/tits1.jpg

...was around 45-50mm wide. Plenty enough so that on a bright summer day I could go right down to 1/500th of a second and get every feather on that bird's wing. 1/1000th would have been nice but you just don't get the sun in these northern climates!

Also, the more you zoom in on something, the less light you get. So, wide angle (or as little zoom as you can manage), large lense and bright days are your friend. ;)

i bet this (http://db.farma.org.uk/Huw%27s%20stuff/pics/photography/_MG_1506.JPG) was an easier shot to take ;) (being sorta... lying there waiting for me to take its picture :p)
though yes, it was on a beautifully sunny day in france :P

 Post explosion! Fluffles for everybody! :fluffle:

I hadn't even seen all these new pages, and now I don't even have the time to read/look through everything. But I'm totally looking forward to doing so tomorrow or Sunday. :)

I just skimmed over the pages randomly clicking a link every now and then - and as drawn by a magical "ego search" function :p I found this one:
my personal faves: http://www.hlj.me.uk/pics/westward%20ho/Westward%20Ho%20020706%20039.jpg
 Can I claim creative influence there, what with the angled stripey ocean motif? Hell, I just will because it'll make me feel all awesome. *nods* :) :p
But of course yours is as usual totally fabulous, looking much more like an abstract painting or something than an actual ocean picture.

Yes, I'd like to think so...I write short stories, I'm working on a novel, I can write lyrics and music, and I can design fashion statements while I'm at it. Not so sure about actually making the stuff, haven't tried.

I've always been more on the side of expressing myself with paint and the such. Went through a phase of music and lyrics when I was at school, I was very musical. Knew how to read it like the back of my hand...probably wouldnt take too long to pick it up again. Things like listening to music or poetry or stories written by a person, gives you so much insight into how they work, how they think. I think its awesome that you're into that!

That's why I embraced digital. No film wasted, only bytes.

Anyway, here are a few I shot today at the Toronto Jazz Festival. Lightning and such was not very good, so a few of them didn't come out fine, but I think the composition and the result are interesting nevertheless.

Grays? Shades? Contrast?
Yeah, kinda, but not really.:p
Those all sound like they refer to the relation between the shades in the picture, whereas I'm talking about the fact that there are very different kinds of "black & white" to begin with. PM often has this very clear, cold, clean, but also slightly antique kind of b&w which fits his pictures perfectly (erm, not that his pics were clear, cold, clean and antique... Gah, I'll just shut up. >.<).

ETA: I mean, you're of course right that the things you mentioned make up the eventual whole of the "b&w", but I'm kinda looking for a word to describe that whole.

Also: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b220/DStudios1/Savannah%202/telfair2.jpg: Ooooohhhhh, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil!

Savannah as i have been discovering as of late, is a great place for pictures of strange statues and monuments. I shall post some more pics from that later......

Yeah, its all the rage. Everyday some tourist comes into the theatre where i work at asking where the guys house and that statue is.....between that and the forrest gump bench (which used to be right outside my theatre) it gets annoying quick. ITS A FRIGGIN BENCH!

the house and the statue i understand though.

nooo, not in France... that set was from a trip to a place by Exeter in Devon we took about a month ago. only just got the pictures together properly. we drove to this place called Westward Ho! to go to the beach at the end of the day, and got sunset shots etc :)

Lol, you should have explained that to me, not Glitzi. She was talking about that place, whereas I was thinking something else entirely. I'll use the opportunity to check out your link, though, to find out why on earth a town would be called Westward Ho!

*puts Glitz's head back together*
*hopes no vital pieces rolled under the couch and went missing*

It's really very simple:

I saw that picture and immediately thought that those two waves/lines looked totally like wagon ruts. Can you see what I mean?
Now, obviously it doesn't really look like wagon ruts on some dusty prairie.
First of all, instead of being carved into the ground (here: water), they actually rise above the ground, like in relief. Hence why I said it looked like a "negative" of an actual wagon trail.
Also, the water doesn't really look like water all that much (well, if it did, the "wagon ruts" association would likely have been a lot less strong to begin with), it has a very heavy and smooth quality and texture, thus reminding me of some futuristic liquid substance (as seen in the water transformations in "The Abyss" or that mercury guy in "Terminator") - which you would totally need, too, to produce a negative relief of a wagon trail. *nods* :p

So basically I wanted to tell PM that I thought his pic looked like that when I noticed the heading "Westward Ho!" and was delighted, because I didn't even contemplate for one second that there could actually exist a place with such a tremendously silly name, so it was obvious to me that PM had actually made the same association with the wagon trails of the Old American West that I had, and had captioned his pic accordingly.

So the pic I posted had nothing to do with a futuristic look but was simply supposed to explain away the obvious confusion about what was meant by "Westward Ho!".

See, you just got a Patented Whereyouthinkyougoing Explanation™, wherein the explanation has to be at least 8 times longer and more complicated than the actual question. How's your head now? :p

i'm quite impressed with your strange mental thought-process there... impressed, if a little.... confused :p (i do now get what you were on about... i could see the futuristic thing if i tried, but the 'wagon trails' element and connection with the non-existant "caption" was what got me :p)

Now, I'm not an artist. But the fact that I managed to get my hands on a digital camera today meant that I could take photos of my day!

So if you want to see a glimpse of life in Brisbane, check it out.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/SiskaandMonday001small.jpg
Our dogs. The Ridgeback is ours, the little Demon (it's a Labradoodle) is training with us to become an assistance dog for disabled people.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip3small.jpg
This is where I live.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip4small.jpg
That's my car. A long time ago, when we had more money, I was very close to buying a WRX. It was at that time that I said on NSG that I had one...I lied. I'm sorry. :(
It's a 1998 VW Golf with a 1.6l engine. But I still thrash it like a rally car. :D

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip5small.jpg
Suburbia. Ugh.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip6small.jpg
From my suburbia, it's a few kilometres of this road to the next suburb. In between there's houses with huge properties around them, so it looks almost rural. This road can also feature as a great race track.
Excuse my gigantic finger, I was trying not to die while taking a picture at 80 km/h. :p

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip7small.jpg
This is the next suburb I was talking about. Most of Brisbane looks fairly similar to this sort of place.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip8small.jpg
As you move closer to my destination (uni campus) you go past the Indooroopilly shopping centre (it's up the ramp towards the right a few metres up the road). That's where everyone hangs out. Not me though, I've got places to go, people to see, tutorials to attend.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip9small.jpg
So, having reached campus, you search in vain for a parking spot.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip10small.jpg
This can be avoided by catching a bus.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip11small.jpg
I'm on my trip back home now (I didn't take photos on campus because there were too many people who would've ended up on pictures on the web, and I didn't want to do that to them). That is Brisbane CBD, across the river. The houses with this sort of view must be a fortune.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip12small.jpg
Still going home. Note the "70" sign, it's the first time I noticed it. ;)

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip13small.jpg
This is very close to my place, back in suburbia. In the distance you can see the CBD again, so you have some idea of the size of the forest that is BrisVegas.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip14small.jpg
Because Brisbane is very much a forest. There's houses underneith there somewhere.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip15small.jpg
And we're back home. Note the little flag I made for the World Cup.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip16small.jpg
While I had the camera, I figured I might as well get a more up-to-date pic of myself. Unfortunately I didn't know how to get rid of the flashing light.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip1small.jpg
That's a better one my mum took last week.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip17small.jpg
That's my room. Obviously the camera is making it much untidier than it really is. No really, it's the camera!

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f94/Leonstein/FloTrip18small.jpg
And that's NS General for me.

Ooooh, those are the ones I like most!
Love how that little twiggy thing in the second one looks like a "real tree" and makes itself look bigger, thus throwing you for a few seconds as to the size of everything.
That hilltop looks very barren adn surreal - perfect! The colors, too, with the pale yellow and the grey and the brilliant blue, all kinda chilly and stern.
And that close-up of the foot hills is fantastic! Great eye to pick out that shot.

That's a GREAT idea!!! You should really do that as a thread - get everybody to take some pictures of their day / life / surroundings. They wouldn't need to put in their houses or anything "identifiable" or "too personal", but that would be great! (Says she who has yet to figure out how to get the pics from the fancy new cell phone onto the laptop . Just do the thread in a couple weeks, will ya? Maybe I've got it by then.)

I loved it! Especially because Australia looks always so nicely exotic.

Hee @ the "brandnew" 70 sign.
And that doggy picture cracked me up so much - that Labradoodle (*snicker*) looks totally like you put your big dog in the dryer and took him out shrunken and all fluffed up. Heee.
And you lying about your car? Aww. *pats*
And that city really is very much a forest.
It's always the camera that makes a room look untidy. *nods*

And I love the shot of your computer with NSG on it! If you do that thread, that should totally be a required shot - everybody's NSG in its natural habitat. http://forum.pummeldex.de/images/emotions/jaa.gif

My favorites are the foothill and the two hilltop one.

strangely, to me, the twiggy thing makes much in that photo look smaller than it really is. The dark rock past the rapids and straight above the twig is about the size of a small apartment.

Grrr i rode up into the canyon today with the idea of trying to learn how to capture the differences in it and in the river as it gains elevation. I got maybe 1/10th of the way up and my battery in the cam was flat. I dont even know what a new one costs yet, its the first dead battery in the new cam. Im sure it will be an obscene price.

Um, there's a thing in Dresden that translates as "Green Vault", I guess. That one?

I was there many (many) years ago and it was awesome. It's a museum that has all this really great jewelry and silver and golden things. Which is great, because I love those, especially the jewelry. I don't care much for looking at old weapons or stuff in a museum like that, but they had so many giant gem stone pendants and breathtaking necklaces and crowns and whatnot that I was in jewelry heaven. *nods*

I'm in Dresden once every year working at a conference, so maybe I should try and find some time next time and go there again. Although I'm not even sure if one can take pictures in there.

Well I hope you're not as.. anal as I am when organising, although it makes it much easier to find certain pictures, but it takes a lot of effort to think up a system that will work.. for me atleast (I'm quite a freak when it comes to my photos..).

I use a special filing system in which 25k photos would be four files, any one of which I would be unable to rapidly find on a regular basis, much less easily find a specific individual photo. Much the same is true of digital videos Ive shot and saved.

After I collect enough photos and vids my computer's motherboard or chip dies of heat and I buy a new computer while never actually getting around to hooking up the last hard drive to the new pooter. This system is fail safe. I have hard drives from Win95 vintage to present in both normal and laptop configurations, and great expectations of someday harvesting my old pictures and videos. No real probability of doing it but still great expectations.

Copyrighting pics and being able to retrieve and sell them as you have done seems like the metaphysics of wizards or demigods from my vantage point.

That snake is a female carpet python named Venom. She has no venom though. Today was the first time I had ever seen her. She belongs to a gut who lives accross the street and down the block from me. On warm summer evenings he drinks beer in his backyard until the mood hits him to play the slow blues unaccompanied on his bass saxophone. Which is actually kinda nice to hear drifting through the neighborhood an a cool summer breeze.

Oh and yes there are some colorful and poisonous snakes in California.

Which is actually kinda nice to hear drifting through the neighborhood an a cool summer breeze.

Oh and yes there are some colorful and poisonous snakes in California.
So, what? She got away or was he hit by the mood to let her go on slow walks unaccompanied on the street? ;)

He was holding her and sitting at a table with an umbrella stuck into it at the lube shop next door to me. I saw the snake and so I walked over and asked if I could take some pics of the snake. He said it was alright to take pics and then he set her down on the ground so I could get some full length pics of her.
I was a little worried when she went around the corner and started looking at the downspout in the picture.

I could probably find a black widow on my property fairly quickly if you want to see a pic of a wild poisonous thing here that would like to bite me.

If you do that, I will never ever in my whole life speak a single word to you again. I will hate you with the passion of a thousand burning suns.

Hey, you made a blog. Very nice pictures! I really have to start taking more black & white pictures, just really makes things look good. I like the statues especially, most of all the one of (presumably) Diana in the hall/stairway. Perfect! And the ones of the Warhol pics look great. Liked the chair back, too. :) What camera did you use, though? The pics look kinda grainy/out of focus. Cell phone?
Oh, and the Rocky trail totally cracked me up. :p Does it go through the whole city, to places related to the film? Or is it just at the steps?

Some were on cellphone, but some were with my camera, and somewhere on the first floor I heard a person say "No flash".. so I turned flash off for the entire museum.. and for some reason it made the pictures blury because of my shakey hand.. *shrugs*

Holy crap, that's a shitload of photos!
Very nice, though :).

I *love* all the ones of those funky, rolling, eroded, grass covered hills. Awesome. Especially this (http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/662/vineyardtt2.jpg), this (http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/3976/4x4crop1aw3.jpg), this (http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5641/fh6id7.jpg), and this (http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/5816/fhbestuj6.jpg)!

This one (http://img104.imageshack.us/img104/6215/towers2ge5.jpg) is also very cool.

Love the James Dean (http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3072/jamesdeanax7.jpg) one. Very Americana feel together with the road and rolling hills pictures. What was that about the "world's largest parking lot (http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/5729/parkinglottj8.jpg)", though? So did they just randomly decide they needed a "world's greates somethingorother" sign and just jokingly pointed to the prairie? Or was there some,I don't know, Woodstock-like thing going on once when all that land was actually used to park on?

The light and colors and reflections in this one (http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/8404/ontheroad4ev1.jpg) are terrific.

Oh, and this: Twentyfive point oh one is watching you.

I now call it my 'in deepest sympathy card' picture!

Ooh, beautiful.

Thank you, it is at the London Aquarium

LOL! I know...I think that there is a time warp over the hedge, it's still the 1940's on that side.

Funky castle. Where is that?

That is Carisbrooke castle...I live within a short walk of it...in fact I can see it from the front of my house. Hence my imaginative name.....

And I really like the one of the train. :)

That was on my Orient Express trip in June, as we went through the Alps I stuck the camera out of the window.

Holy crap, that's a shitload of photos!
Very nice, though :).

Thank you! Ill try to curb my enthusiasm a little though :p

The parking lot thing predates the James dean thing by bout 30 years. Its just a joke because this lil store is 35 miles away from nowhere and 5 more miles away from anything.

Oh, and this: really cracked me up. :p

Hehehehehehehe Im glad somebody besides me enjoyed it, thank you!

Without further ado here are this weekends mountain photos from me.

(Next week's will be from Montana de Oro beach.:) :) )
