I've only read the first post before I got bord, so Ill be blunt.

Whats his name? I've met about every geek imagineable - any respectful geek has been to a SW convention.

Just wondering.

Now I have to save the galaxy.

Good Day.

I need some advice from some geeks/girlfriends of geeks. How the hell do you get them interested and get them to ask you out?

Tell them you have nude pictures of Carrie Fisher and will let them have a look if they go out with you :)

Makes me think of a quote by Carrie Fisher when she was asked about the white dress in ANH:

"In space, there is no underwear. Only gaffer tape."

Did you know they had a pool going as to who would pull off the gaffer tape first? You can just imagine that one:

i know it's a wonderful subject, i really enjoy learning about it, I'm just rubbish at taking the exams, probably because i just can't write essays, I only got a C in it in my gcses. Now, I didn't take the time to read all 52 pages of response to this line, and maybe something has changed since the beginning of the prompt, but my voice goes towards just talking to him. If you want, you could IM me (AIM) at Poisoit333, a lot depends on the situation. I'm about as nerdy as you can get - I'm in Model United Nations as the Secretary General, I'm in our school's HTML Club, I rarely go outside, etc. I'm always online if you want to talk, I'd love to try to help however I can.

That's true too... I took Film in college and for a while it killed the pleasure of watching movies. Then again because it's formal study and you get exposed to more aspects than randomly watching or studying it, it does broaden your world view.

The history of military aviation huh? Sweet! I'm into naval history right now actually but I love planes too. The Spitfire particularly. So beautiful...

One book I read recently is China: a History, by Arthur Cotterell. It takes you all through the history of China from Pre-historic times right up to Deng Xiaoping. Well as Marion says to George Lucas in that brilliant spoof George Lucas in love, "Write what you know" - don't sweat it. I started out loving history when I saw Di Laurentiis / Bondarchuk's epic WATERLOO on TV as a child and it hooked me in ever since and made me into a walking-encyclopedia type uber nerd (wonders it did for my social life in High School - I was always in the library devouring uniform books) but go with your gut on these things. I've always loved uniforms and I've started collecting. If you're into planes, great! Read, learn, bottom line ENJOY!

Who knows you can be Maverick he can be Iceman - or is it the other way around?

;)

P.S.
I'd recommend either Il-2 Sturmovik or Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2. The former is lovely, while the later has a TON of downloads and addons to keep you happy for a long, long time...

Hopefully it's got a lot about the First World War. It should, anyway. :p The stories from there are incredible. It was so...well, chivalrous, really. For the first few years. Big change from the mass slaughter on the ground...

As for good flying sims, WarBirds is excellent. And free (well, if you don't play it online it's free).

Damn! I read a book that had a good half of it devoted to WWI air fighting. Its pretty much where it all began. From pilots attacking each other with bricks and pistols, to massive squadrons with machine-guns firing through their propellers.

All the stuff about Boelche and the like...its incredible stuff.

WW2 was another big jump I suppose. Started with piston-engined craft, finished with rockets and jets.

I think I'll stop - I'm sure Bill Gunston is a far, far better writer than I.

And the Spitfire is the most beautiful plane ever made. And the best sounding. Nothing compares to that beautiful Merlin engine...

Ever heard it at an air-show or the like? (TVs just can't convey it properly...)

Strange, considering it's a weapon of war. Huh.

Yeah, there's a good airshow every year or so up at Leuchars Air Base. Its all a bit samey...but still good. Especially when you're eardrums come close to popping when those bloomin' loud jets go past.

Wow. We've drifted way, waaaaaay off topic. We're almost into the realms of things I know enough about to talk about. And we can't have that. :p

Perhaps not, but there is a problem when it drifts into Troon Territory. When such a momentous event happens, the thread has no choice but to die immediately. More importantly, whoever was in it is required, by law, to stop talking to me.

Also, you (and others) might get an inclining into my mind. And that's just not on.

How often does it storm there? They're rare here in Sydney (though that could be largely because of the drought...

However, when we do get them, they're quite intense. See this thread on another site I frequent (I'm a skyscraper nerd :p) It's not Sydney, but the end result is similar :p

we don't get thunder very often but we get rain pretty bad, I think Blackpool must get it more than anywhere else in the UK, in the winter the sea gets rather rough, they've had to close off parts of the Promenade a couple of times already this year cause of the sea jumping over the sea wall (which is like 20ft tall or something)

The usual routes are the best. Ask his friends about him etc, get one of your female friends to sound him out and so on. If that doesnt work then dont wait to be asked, ask him yourself. Most guys are just as nervous about asking a girl out as you are of asking a guy. Make the first move and you might be surprised.

Alternativley "accidentally" end up at the same party, feed him a few beers and snog his face off. Hell, it would work on me :p

Don't send another girl in! Get his instant message handle and talk online first. That's the best way to his heart. Then you can talk about movies and go see one together. Meet up at the theatre. Its a slow but great process!

Hi there Tink,

Just in case I can't stay long enough to chat with you...

Gunston's pretty good, like the late Anthony Preston was for naval warfare. The late David Chandler (lecturer at Sandhurst) was great for land warfare. Then there are fellows like John Keegan and Col. David Hackworth who can give you a broad overview of events. For world events you can't go wrong with Barbara Tuchman for readability and depth - I'm reading about the pre-World War 1 era, the era of the Titanic and Queen Victoria and she's got two great books The Proud Tower and The Guns of August. Then for 'pop culture' history there's the legendary Stephen Ambrose who authored BAND OF BROTHERS among other works.

But then reading pure history can get tiring at times so be sure to spice up your reading with narratives - some great air stories include FLY FOR YOUR LIFE by Larry Forrester chronicling the life of British ace Bob Tuck, Paul Brickhill's REACH FOR THE SKY about the legless ace Douglas Bader (I wore my copy out that it fell to pieces!) and THE DAMBUSTERS about the legendary 617 Squadron and boffin Barnes-Wallis' wacky 'bouncing bombs' and 'grandslam' superbombs. If you can find it, another good one's THE LAST ENEMY about the young Battle of Britain pilot Richard Hillary.

http://www.gavinton.net/richard_hillary_memorial.htm

There's this beautiful passage where he describes shooting down his first German plane... he thinks about the man he just killed and wonders what he was like - sort of like Faramir looking at the dead Easterling in The Two Towers - saying something like, 'was he blonde and blue eyed, did he die with the Fuhrer's name on his lips, or just have the last conscious second of himself as a man...' Amazing stuff.

Robert Jackson has some pretty good compilations around. FULL CIRCLE's a great read if you can find it. THE FIRST AND THE LAST about German Ace Adolf Galland (Bader's great adversary!) and SAMURAI about the late great Saburo Sakai (Japan's top scoring ace) I've not read but I know by reputation. The one I have is called GOD'S SAMURAI about Mitsuo Fuchida, the Japanese bomber pilot who led the strike on Pearl Harbor and later became a Christian missionary. All of these are great reading in that they 'strap you into the pilot's seat' and give you a feel for the cramped confines of a spitfire, the thrill and terror of air combat, the smell of glycol and oil...

Don't discount the fiction either! I was lucky to find a copy of a compilation of great flying stories edited by Frederick Forsyth (Day of the Jackal), The Best Flying Stories, IIRC all great short stories from the likes of even Arthur Conan Doyle, JG Ballard (Empire of the Sun) and Len Deighton. The best one there, for me at least, is Winter's Morning by Len Deighton. Starts off as a routine flying story but there's a twist at the end that just turns the story on its head. I wish I could find a way to do that as a short film.

http://www.worldcatlibraries.org/wcpa/top3mset/51da115242ef10f2a19afeb4da09e526.html

Deighton, by the way has three great books on air combat, Fighter (dealing with the battle of Britain) and Bomber (the British night bomber campaign against Germany) and - I bought this yesterday - Good Bye Mickey Mouse (about the American P-51 pilots in England during the war). His

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/authors/Len_Deighton.htm

For fiction I think nothing beats the playfulness and inventiveness of Roald Dahl - more famous for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - he was a fighter pilot in North Africa and Greece and his short stories are the best! They have all these interesting and surprising twists that just have you grinning like an idiot afterwards. I really love Death of an Old Old Man, Beware of Dog and They Shall Not Grow Old.

Another recommended writer was Antoine de Saint-Exupery, whose most famous book, The Little Prince, takes place when he's forced down in the desert.

http://www.worldwar2pilots.com/ww2-StExupery1.htm

Well I hope this doesn't seem so intimidating, it's just enjoyable stuff to read if you can find it. I believe that teaching and learning history is all about putting the STORY back in History. Learning that these were human beings we can relate to and who had similar emotions and dreams.

best wishes,
Cathenia

Why don't you become his stalker, but do it honestly, just tell him you're planning on stalking him and could he give you his address, telephone number and times when he'll be in.
If he laughs that'll start a conversation, if he gets worried then you're safe knowing it was just a joke.

cause i'm ugly and he doesn't fancy me

Listen. He's a teenaged male. This means he has a very strong sex drive, unless there's something wrong if him (like some diseases that reduce sex drives).

He is a 'geek' and is likely therefore sexually frustrated.

So, if you want a 100% sure way to get him interested, getting him into a private area, and the subsequent removal of important articles of clothing is your best bet.

Unless he's really religious, gay, or diseased, he isn't going to say no when you start trying to have sex with him.

I'm with Karnath on this one.
Ok, another suggestion. This happened to a friend of mine (at my house of all places).
My mate (who already had a girlfriend) was at my house, with me, my girlfriend and her friend. My girlfriends friend came on to my mate but he wasn't really interested. She waited until he had gone up to the toilet then followed him up shortly. As my mate put it, her killing line was "Well what about these then" when she whipped her top off. She was very well endowed somewhat like yourself.

Sorry to but in the conversation but I have a suggestion.
Why don't you become his stalker, but do it honestly, just tell him you're planning on stalking him and could he give you his address, telephone number and times when he'll be in.
If he laughs that'll start a conversation, if he gets worried then you're safe knowing it was just a joke.
It happened to me one night, I was coming out of a night club, a girl was with her friends and she told me she was my stalker. We started chatting and, well the rest is up to your imagination...

You idiot! So your stalker won? That's a disgraceful defeated by the victim. Shame!

Yes. While getting him drunk might help your odds, it will most probably mar his performance, due to the lack of fine motor control.

Even if you don't feel like exposing yourself, you could go and find somewhere private, press him against a wall, begin full-on kissing him, rubbing your hand along his body, pressing a condom into his hand...

Might have worse odds for success than giving him a condom and whipping off your pants, though.

Do not forget also that some people are not photogenic. I most certainly am not. It's rare that I actually get a *decent* photo of me, let alone one that's actually *good*.

Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and most us think she's lovely. Nor do you have to insult her if you happen to disagree.

Not to mention that she's not just physically lovely; if you've been paying attention to her posts, here and elsewhere, she also happens to be intelligent (far above the average in these fora, in any case!), and to me at least she has a gorgeous personality.

lol this topic is funny.

What's the definition of a geek anyway? If being a social outcast, with one or two favorite games, listening to a lot of music and dressing funny it's considered geeky, then I'm for sure one, but I've dated enough to not "fall off my knees" when a girl gets near. Not like the guy is going to touch you with one finger and scream "a girl, a girl, help" when you try talking to him. If you're assuming that a geek is a complete virgin that was left in his room to rot for 99% of his life, you might have the surprise of your life.
Then again, what's the definition of a geek?

Tink: Ok, from the sounds of things, you've already crossed the biggest hurdle. He's talking to you, he isn't scared witless of you because you are a girl, and he is able to look at you without being mentally paralysed by your good looks.

What you need to remember now, is this guy quite probably worships you, and thinks you are the hottest thing that ever walked planet earth. No, seriously. He also probably knows with absolute certainty there is no way you would EVER date him.

I know you are nervous and you don't want to ask him out, because it's nervewracking, but this plan you've got now is not gonna work. You want him to take the hint? He will be IMPERVIOUS, the hints will bounce off like BB pellets from a tank. You'll hoping he will summon up the guts to ask you out? He is 16 times more scared of the prospect then you are. Ain't gonna happen.

Trust me, Im looking at your picture now and I rate you as "hot". He, however, has spent lots of time with you and has definitely run scenarios over in his brain where he gets to kiss you. The first time you ever made an openly flirtatious comment on MSN, he grinned like the cheshire cat for about 8 minutes. He probably thinks you are one of the hottest girls that ever lived.

Look, you need to bite the bullet. You either need to find the least scariest way possible to ask him out, and go with that, or you need to make the first move. That means invite him to go see a film or something, but NOT with friends, or if you can get some privacy at your house, invite him over to watch a video or something. Then you need to be the one to snuggle during the film, and you'll probably need to be the one to initiate a kiss. After that, he's yours.

You don't need to seduce him or win him over, he already thinks you're The Awesome. NOW you just need to get over your shyness and jump his bones, alright? There is no way in the world he will say no.

I'm the one with slant eyes here and I can't see a thing of beauty in that photo. you have problems.

Sino, from reading this and the other comments you have made in this thread, I can conclude that the reason you don't seem to be having any luck with women isn't because you're a geek.

It's because you're a dumbass. :)

Have a nice day.

Just start talking with them and then just randomly hug them out of nowhere. That'll get them going, "Holy shit... I'm touching a girl!"

Seriously. It works. ;)

I've held back from replying too directly but I'm afraid I'd have to agree with the above post. You either say something constructive or b****r off.

Actually, snuggling up to him is probably a very good idea. I'm guessing you would never actually initiate the first kiss, TInk, but if you can get him round to watch a video, sit next to him and then at some point snuggle up to him, then that would send an extremely clear message. ;) Plus it allows you both to start it with fairly little steps to get over your shyness. He'll probably start by putting an arm round you while he works up the courage to ask you, etc...

I'd say it's worth a try. It should give him the jolt he needs to realise you're interested, and that he can ask.

I thought you said you were a Kiwi?

Cathenia

Why can't a Chinese person live in NZ and be a Kiwi? If I tell you that I was born in NZ, you'd believe me.

well... (doing my Inigo Montoya impression) Let me explain... no, no, no there is too much, let me sum up.

Sino drops in abruptly and starts being a royal pain.

Granted Tink may not be everyone's dream girl but does he have to so insult her and potentially lower her self esteem?

Hence our choice comments.

tink's losing confidence, and is not going to ask...I don't remember a time when she had any confidence. Her original excuse was that she was too scared to ask. Has she come up with any new ones?

Since I'm so preoccupied with my work that I don't even care. It does not make me a dumbass in anyway.

In fact, sometimes people call me a geek, but am I really one? How is a geek/nerd defined? I'm certainly not anti-social.

Ack, she doesn't have to ask! You'll never get her to do that. What she needs to do is put him in a situation where he'll feel confident enough to ask.

Regarding the snuggling suggestion above, I should add that it also has the benefit that you're not committing yourself by it. If he does nothing, you can simply pull back. If it made him feel too uncomfortable, you can just say you were fooling around.

In my opinion, it's a win-win.

(And if you snuggled up to me, you would win my heart in a second, but then that's a whole other matter... ;) ).

How useless and crappy it felt because you couldn't ask out the person you had a crush on for fear of rejection. I don't see what's wrong with helping her along with a little (okay, more than a little) encouragement and if some folks haven't noticed it's not just about the geek-boy, but maybe we can help Tink make up her mind about work and her college course (nothing to be taken lightly, college courses). That's all I'm about here. I see no reason to trample on her self-esteem by calling her a horse's rear.
