What we know:

(1) Max Barry isn't a mod. First of all, Max is far too busy with the game mechanics to work on moderating, that and writing novels. In addition, only one or two of the other mods live in Australia, and none of them are Max, as has been conclusively proven. Semi-conclusively. Ish.

(2) [violet] is likely not Max. [violet] was around at the same time as Maxtopia, a nation which had Admin status. Max had no need to run two Admin accounts at the same time, and if Max was [violet], [violet] would have only been created after Maxtopia was abandoned. There's still a good chance Max and [violet] are one, but it's outweighed by chances the other way, especially considering how well known [violet] would be bound to become.

(3) Max is a lurker, probably a little-known poster. This is by his own admittance. Max wouldn't get too well known, as inevitably those who get too well known -- like those who post in this thread -- are eventually accused of being Max Barry, and could be potentially telegram-spammed the way Maxtopia was. If Max stuck to the same nation throughout I'd put it at a February or March 2003 join date, but I suspect he has more than one nation anyway, so in reality he could appear a January 2007 poster if he wished.

Max has participated in, IIRC, at least one invasion and one defender operation. He probably uses IRC, although on an unrelated IP address and provider. I don't believe he roleplays, although I could be wrong.

In short, we don't know anything. Therefore I state that the next poster is Max Barry.

In regards to 2:
Moderators on well-run forums have extensive rules that aren't always visible to regular posters. In the case of NationStates, we've got several thousand words on demeanor and acceptable behavior that we are expected to follow or have our modly powers stripped. We're also blessed with three open-minded admins (Max, [violet], and SalusaSecundus) who are adamant about allowing speech that may not fit the standard demographic, as long as it fits within our fairly broad guidelines of acceptable behavior.

I'm an admin on one other forum, and the owner is a kindred spirit to Max and Co. It's a bit more free-wheeling and adult than this one, but the same principles apply. We've got an extensive hidden ruleset that's far more restrictive than most players would believe. That's the way good forums handle this.

In your case, you're missing those key figures that provide the ethical core for the mods. I've always ended up abandoning those sort of places, regardless of how interesting the discussions were. If I had good friends (or opponents) there, I'd invite them to wherever I headed next. Ultimately, all such powertrippers are doomed to failure, kings only of their solo domains. Kinda like a NS Hermit, now that I think about it.

However, not one did I do under the guise of [violet], for very good reason: one does not do dirty deeds under a sweet, flowery name like [violet]. How could a person named [violet] sound convincing when going "MWAAAHAHAHHH!"?

Therefore it is absurd to claim that mods use the name [violet] when they don't want to get their own hands dirty. [violet] is not a name for getting hands dirty with. [violet] is a name for sitting on a silken cushion with, sipping Earl Grey tea from a Royal Doulton china cup.
