I wonder if he even plays the game. he could be no-one? ever think of that? then again that may be unlikely. But we have to know this entire thread really is pointless. This thread is should have been titled "Who is violet and which nation is Max Barry?" If I was violet I wouldnt want to give ouy my identity, just like I am sure no one in nationstates wants to give out their true identity(except for some people) So we need to face the fact, Violet wont tell us who he/she/it really is, and Max Barry isnt going to tell us what nation he/she/it (just kidding there) is. Also, the mods wont tell us because they sit here, read this thread and laugh at us as we try to guess who he is. Heck they are probably laughing right now. Why else would they pin it? So long story short

I read an article a while ago that Monkeypimp posted a link to. It was an article in on a new Zealand news site that refered to the trouble they were having with the IP address of the old Micheal Jackson flamer from way back and how because of them all the other peope on the same thingamajig as MJ couldn't access NS.

Look, my point is in the article it definitely pointed out that [violet] WAS Max Barry (AKA Mixed Berry). What it did was refer to MB as the administrator of NS... and as far as I am aware [violet] does that job on NS, don't they?

Max Barry is [violet] and I can prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. I used to one of the many that think the VIMB conspiracy theory is just that a theory and that it is silly to even think the MBIV but now I am a beliver.

This all started with the lengthy down time of the server, as I am off school for a while to cure my boredom I read the about and FAQ sections again and this is where I found the most of the evidence you will see before you.

From the general section in the FAQ
Why did you make this?
Because it seemed like a fun idea, and a way to let people know about my novel Jennifer Government. With luck, some of the people who play NationStates will buy the book. Then my publisher will think I am a left-field marketing genius, instead of a chump who blew four months on a web game when he should have been working on his next novel.
Notice the question says why did you make this which could imply [violet] but the author mentions Jennifer Government as "my novel" meaning that it was Max who "blew four months on a web game".
There are other pointers to the fact Max did create NS. I give you this extract from the about page

Max isn't the innocent computer illiterate writer you thought he was, is he? Stunning, I know, but creating the game is different from being [violet]. Max could have just created a primitive game and got some friendly programmer to do most of the work while he writes and browses the forum as one of his puppets. Well lets turn to the nice FAQ again for more evidence this first one from the UN section.

Can I make a UN resolution to add war to the game?
No. Well, you can, but I'm still not going to add war. The UN is not there to request new game features. I admit this would be nice: propose a change, vote it through, and BAM! The game gets better. But then, I would have to make the BAM! part happen, so this won't fly. It would require me to spend so much time rewriting game code that I wouldn't be able to pursue my real passion, which is earning enough money to buy food, and staying sane.
This shows us that Max does still take an active role in the running of the game and a recent news post about the move to jolt further emphasizes this.

An update from Max

A family emergency called me away immediately after we moved to the new server, so it's been a little chaotic, sorry. Thanks so much to the mods and especially SalusaSecondus for picking up some slack and keeping this place ticking over. Sal basically had the entire admin job dropped in his lap at the most difficult time possible and he's done an outstanding job.

At the last count there were 2 Admins (or should I say admie), Sal and [violet]. Max gets called away and that causes there to be 1 admin left who has to manage the move, which is Sal. Max must be [violet]. Sal cannot be Max as in the about page Sal is named as Gregory Rubin.

[Dredd] is retired so that is Max cannot be him/her (and the fact he is Geoff Wong throws that theory out of the window) but Max is without a reasonable doubt [violet]. Both are Australian (ok not a great point but add it to the other stuff and it starts to add to the case), both are male. The later point comes straight from the mouths of 2 mods in the NationStates Bible who when pressed about it became very silent.

In conclusion:

SSIMB: nope, SS is Gregory Rubin

DIMB: Again nope, his name was geoff wong and he gets mentioned at the back of Jennifer government for telling Mac what a virus coul do/not do.

MB is a writer not a computer programmer: He knows perl (to a degree), it says at the front of the JG, on this site and in Maxchat.

Whats with the name [violet], why would max chose that? must be someone else: again JG hold the answer. In the book one if the major charcters is called violet. She is also a compute programmer extrodiair (well creates one hell of a virus) and so would probably be the most appropriate name for an admin of a game designed to promote the book.

Max is just paying for someone to take over his forum account and manage the site: well this is possible but he was already paying so much for the server (before the move) why would he pay when he is getting alot of help from the mods and other people? He isn't some bumbling fool and with all these peoples help he could easily manage this site. Another thing, if he was just paying someone to run the site would it take as much of his time as he says it does?

I believe that there is another admin which has never posted on the forums. If [Violet] has no nation then the only way we know about it is because it has lots of posts. Max Barry therefore must have another account that holds admin powers but either has never posts or is not recognisable as an admin.

On the Nationstates "about" page, a man named Geoff Wong is mentioned. We can assume that he was somehow involved in the development of NS. So, let's try to find some more info about him. Googling for him reveals a site hosted by an Austrailian educational institution, http://goanna.cs.rmit.edu.au/~geoff/ We can assume that he is Austrailian, since most likely Max consulted his friends to help develop the site. Clicking the "games" link on his website (Geoff's) includes a link to the MUD Shattered World, located at http://www.shattered.org/. The admin link on this MUD points to "geoff@shattered.org, so we can assume it's the same person. Now... if we click the "Wizards" link on this site, which is their version of "game admin", we are presented with a list including..... DREDD.

Therefore, in conclusion, [dredd] cannot be Max since [dredd] is Geoff Wong of shattered.org.

I think Max Barry is probably someone that we would all believe, but not really suspect. Someone that that is a brilliant writer, but someone who everyone just takes for granted. If he did tell us we would all probably say "Oh yeah," before promptly spamming him to hell.

My plan:

This gives us the list of all Aussies in the game. Next we check who of the reguraly reads and posts at the fora's. This gives us a shorter list of potential Maxxes. The most important step is: we send some-one to Max his house to watch him and when he (Max) posts our spy must give us a signal so we can see who posted. Voila, then we know who Max is. :p Or the spy could just tell us the name of the nation Max logs in to, but that's no fun.

OK, for the longest time I wasn't sure and I'm still not totally certain but I think I may have some evidence pointing to [violet] being max barry. This might have been already discussed before; I don't know; I went through a lot of threads dealing with this and didn't find anything. OK, here goes ....

I think the biggest hint comes from the FAQ. We can say with absolute confidence that max wrote this FAQ byt his statement:

(I've capsed important words.) Thus it is also clear that he has some programming experience if he put this game together. Some might object saying that learning programming takes a long time to learn. Wrong; I learned java in a week and pearl in three days, also ... (I could go on and on). Another objection might be that he could have someone else write it. However, the statement suggests otherwise since Max wouldn't be as occupied creating this game if he weren't active in development i.e. he was writing something. I don't think I heard too many people object to max's programming abilities.

[violet] definitly programs as he continues to make updates to the site (by the way ::applauds [violet] for adding issues submission::) and fix problems. (I could post some quotes here if someone wants to but I don't think that will be neccessary.)

Having established that Max Barry wrote the FAQ, we know that the following statement came from him:

If he runs this website, then he must have absolute power to do so i.e. he must be the or an administrator. The only administrator I've seen so far was [violet] (Are there otherones? I didn't see them, but I don't think that there are) Someone might object, stating that he might have given power over to a friend/someone to run this website i.e. [violet]. While this seems valid at first, a little quote from Max Barry's biography page must give us some thought:

If he were not the administrator, why would NationStates threaten to consume his life? Would he only satisfy himself by playing as a single nation/s? He might have some for the heck of it but just think about it for a minute. He'd definitly want some power to control stuff around here and we know that the mods aren't max barry since they all came later.

Conclusion: [violet] = Max Barry. This is clearly evident; even though he tries to hide it. And as several posters already said, it's fun watching people guess. Nonetheless, he didn't cover his tracks well enough.

I think I'll add my two cents to this thread (practically every other nation on Nationstates seems to be doing the same) and show how, with the addition of this evidence, we can prove the connection of [violet] to Max Barry.

My deductive reasoning:

- Max Barry, based on his own evidence, created the website <www.nationstates.net>.

- I found a thread started by [violet] and clicked on the ID, then went to [violet]'s homepage (normally his/her nation).

- [violet]'s homepage took me to <www.nationstates.net>.

- Conclusion: [violet] = Max Barry.

The only possible objection is if <www.nationstates.net> was not created by Max Barry, but by a professional whom Max enlisted to help him create the online game he wished to create. This in itself is highly unlikely, and at any rate Max would have probably picked up some knowledge of computer code in order to become the administrator (see the News page's posts by "Max Barry"). It stands to reason therefore that Max would have an ID to post on the forums. Since [violet] is the NationStates administrator, here is yet another proof that [violet] = Max Barry.

clicking on [violet]'s "homepage", or nation, brings you to the nation of [violet], which "doesn't exist", so it just goes to your nation. Your theory is too flawed and simple. 12+blue=max, therefore, [violet] = 17 oranges and a parakeet

Max Barry is the Smoking Man. There is no identity of violet, otherthan Max Barry. The triumvirate of mystery will continue to confound people who don't look for the unobvious obvious.

You can't get much more of a mod answer than from [violet] herself.

If you were ejected for rulebreaking (and you were, and you now know why), your nation(s) will not be revived.

I won't say that this is definitive, but I received this pic from a source that claims to have known a paparazzi in Australia who purportedly caught this shot of [violet] through the window of a coffee shop one dark and stormy night. Though I had to tweak the color balance to get any detail, it's still pretty obvious that [violet] is female ... or a very girly man.

The other pic is of course Max, or so it says on his website. Though I must admit the two of them have never been photographed together ... but neither have Max and me ... or [violet] and me ... or Katganistan and [violet] ... or Sinuhue and me ... ummm, now that I think about it, I've never been photographed. Finally, the mods don't know who Max Barry is. The players don't either. In fact they don't know if Max is one of them—not a moderator or anything, just a normal player who retired from administrating.

I wouldn't be surprised if everyone who's posted on this thread saying, "I am Max Barry" was right. There's no reason why Max shouldn't have 10, 20, 100, even a thousand nations.
