Formula Used:

Each team has 12 attacks. Each team’s defense is 900 – their rank. New teams automatically have a rank of 100. 24 random numbers are generated. They are divided into two groups of twelve. Each random number over the other team’s defense is a goal. Whichever team has more goals wins.

OGLETRANSPORTING SERVICES TRUCK DRIVER ARRESTED
Drunken driver taken in for questioning after fatal Audioslavia incident

An OgleTransporting Services Co. trucker driving an 18-wheeler is said to have killed 23 Audioslavian footballers in Kingsford for the World Cup. The man was quoted as saying "Oh, those were people? I thought they were cones." The statement has not been officially recorded due to the driver's drunkeness at the time following the incident.

The Tigers of Timway make their international debut in qualifying Group 1. The Tigers must get off to a very good start, as they play the other four nonranked teams in the first four games before encountering all three ranked teams in the group in three consecutive games. Rabid fans dressed in tiger costumes and paraphenalia have already been seen in large numbers at Timway's airports boarding planes bound the site of the Tigers' first game against Mezitzia. The nation of Timway anxiously awaits the results of its national team's first international competition.

Sam: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the BSTV World Cup 6 preview show! I'm Sam Murphy...

Joey: ...and I'm Joey Stanton. Good to be here once again to watch the Lions make their second attempt.

Sam: Well, our performance last Cup was sufficient enough for us to be ranked 27th in the world -- pretty respectable, I'd say.

Joey: Indeed. I imagine that'll give us a very good chance at qualifying [i]normally this time.

Sam: Have you seen the teams in the group, Joey?

Joey: Er...no. I don't like the sound of that, though.

[code:1:f36d9aa1ee]GROUP 6:
The Midnight Armies
Aquilla
(29) Haraki
(48) Alhana Catherine
(28) Christofi
(27) Bedistan
(12) Runaway Moose
(9) Ironchefk[/code:1:f36d9aa1ee]

Joey: So? What's so bad about that? We have the third highest ranking in the group.

Sam: Barely. I should point out that Group 6 has six ranked teams, more than any other group. Including Ironchefk, a group of outstanding newcomers in WC5, and Runaway Moose, who have had a great side for several years.

Joey: And I note that teams #28 and #29 are also in the group...that's just mean, Sam.

Sam: Stop insulting the host nation, Joey! At any rate, Group 6 has been called the toughest group in qualifying here -- some have even said, a group of death.

Joey: I didn't know football was life-threatening, Sam.

Sam: Well, I don't mean literally death.

Joey: So who do we play first?

Sam: Our first game is in Christofi. The Christofian team finished second in Qualifying Group 2 last World Cup, and then found themselves at the bottom of their group in the first round.

Joey: How about the other teams?

Sam: The Midnight Armies is a brand new team; we don't really know anything about them. Then we have the aforementioned Runaway Moose, third in Qualifying Group 4 and second in Group E before falling to Svecia in the second round last Cup. Haraki was first in that same qualifying group and also went to the same group in the first round, but they finished last there.

Joey: Then we have Ironchefk, one of the most impressive new teams from last time. After finishing third in Qualifying Group 6, they utterly dominated Group G before finally falling to Europa Brittania in a penalty shootout in the second round. Alhana Catherine has been in several Cups, but unfortunately didn't do all that well in Tanah Burung, failing to qualify. Finally, we have Aquilla.

Sam: Aquilla? That name sounds familiar...

Joey: Yes, they're the parent nation of New Aquilla, located on Paripana's Southern Continent. We could have something of a rivalry there -- I can't wait for the home game against them, but that's our very last qualifying game.

Sam: Well, folks, we're running out of time. I'm Sam Murphy for Joey Stanton, signing off for BSTV.

Yes, a Scorpion Soccer battle to resolve both sides differences. We could even have an undercard if enough teams showed interest... imagine that, a one-night extravaganza of attitude and baditude of hot sumptuous three on three football action between the biggest rivals in the game.. how good does that sound??

Tanah Burung
22-07-2003, 06:04
The Tanah Burung Crocodiles departed the country for their first-ever World Cup qualifying match against Whorecore. The Crocodiles have chartered a state-of-the-art blimp, the Flying Cassowary (Kapal Terbang Kasowari) to transport them to their away games in the several unknown countries of Group Five. Included in the hire was a navigator who it is hoped will be able to find these previously unknown countries. He is currently researching the location of Whorecore.

Group Five is not expected to present a big challenge to the Crocodiles, automatic qualifiers in all previous Cups since their debut in WC2. Currently ranked number eight, they narrowly missed an automatic berth this time out.

"We're giving a lot of respect top the other teams," said team captain Ab Francisco. "The biggest competition, obviously, is the Snub Nose 20 Hooligans. Snub Nose 38, i should say. But since we've never played any of the teams in our group before, any one of them could surprise us."

New coach Bi Kikere, the scarred former goalkeeper for the Crocodiles, promised a crowd of 15,000 cheering supporters at Tiga Burung airfield that she expected the Crocodiles to top their group and use the qualifiers as a tune-up for the main event in Kingsford. Or possibly Spaam. She will be experimenting with untried young substitutes while playing with a mostly-intact line-up from the last Cup.

"If anyone beats us, they'll be in trouble," she added. "See, there's a curse on teams that eliminate the Crocs. WC2? We were elimated by Al Quds, and look what happened to them. WC3? Communism and Vodka knocked us out, and their country has ceased to exist. The curse doesn't operate when it involves a host country (Brazillico beat us when they were hosting and last time we hosted it ourselves). But mark my words. Beating Tanah Burung when there is no host country involved is the kiss of death. Do so at your peril!"

KM: And finally, in sports, the qualifying for the sixth World Cup is about to get under way. Here with us for a brief pre-games analysis is Michael Black. Mike?

MB: Thank you, Kath. Football fans across the nation are again cheering on the team, which, in what I believe is an unprecidented event, contains the same roster as the previous year. Even the substitutes haven't changed. This, despite some concerns over the health of star striker Zhen Sui-Ling, who missed the final qualifying match and all three actual Cup games last year with a still-unspecified injury or illness.

KM: The team's denied rumors that she was attacked in Tanah Burung. Regardless of the reason, though, her absence was definitely felt, as the Ravens played to two scoreless draws and a 1-0 loss. As with the previous year, Ravenspire lost only a single match, but failed to proceed beyond the first round. Now the team is hoping to break through in their fourth Cup.

MB: On screen, we have the draw for the qualifiers...

MB: Now, there's been some speculation that the matches may be reorganized, but if not, I'd say Ravenspire is in a pretty good position. Once again, the Ravens are not the top seed in their group, but they've got a good track record with upsets, and I believe they've beaten both Dennisov and Gesamtkunstwerk in past Cups, which may give them a morale advantage there. They've also defeated the other seeded team, One Red Dot, in the fourth Cup qualifiers.

KM: What about our team, Mike? Can we look forward to some more of that incredible defense they displayed in the previous Cups?

MB: That's the hope, Kath, but I understand that once more they've been drilling on offense, since they scored almost as few goals as they allowed, in the last Cup. We'll have to see whether that's had an effect on their play.

KM: And there you have it. Up next, we'll talk to the foxgirl who set a new speed-skating record at last week's Ravenspire Games. But first, this word from our sponsors...

On to Fred, Fred are you there?

Good evening listeners and people in trees, yes folks, the United Nations will pretty soon tell our government to replace houses with even more trees. It seems that Dennisov hasn't got enough of them yet, perhaps we should all go and live in them or on the beach, your choice.

Enough about that later in our political broadcast titled: 'Barking up the wrUNg tree', but first to more pleasurable events, the World Cup Qualification Draw

After a quick exit from the last World Cup, Dennisov once again needs to play in the qualification rounds.

With us tonight we have Brian Leetch and Jacques Martin who will comment on the teams whom we will be facing this year. A change in rules now means that we will face each team twice. This will mean that the seeded teams will have to wait an eternity to even start playing, then again, no-one asked us. Perhaps we should stage these games ourselves and return to the old rules, perhaps.

The first team to be drawn tonight will be the first team we will face, let's see who this will be.

...JURIMAXISTAN...
JM: Unknown, we will have to play to win, a win at the early stages is crucial.
BL: Yes, our team a mix of young and old of experience and energy of drive and restrained of...

...Australian Marsupials...
JM: Unknown, we will have to play and win....
Unfortunately we were unable to get either Jacques and Brian to come to the studio and we have already used all the recorded material.

...Ravenspire... (seeded 24th)
I have heard of this team, we should be able to dig up some information about them, but we won't play them until the fourth game of this qualification series.

...One Red Dot... (seeded 30th)
I know they have been playing in the WC, not someone we remember playing against ourselves, I really should have brought my notepad to this draw.

...Getsamtkuntswerk... (seeded 21st)
Oh I remember them alright, this is not going to be easy at all. I will need to start practising the pronounciation of their players, and start now! Especially as we will be playing them after Jurimaxistan.

...Bubsy...
JM: Unknown, we will...
BL: Yes
Thank you for your comments, yes another unknown team to us, we won't play them right away, so will be able to see them in action before facing them ourselves.

...Crimson Sparta...
JM: to win............is crucial
BL: young and old
Indeed, the third match of this series will be against Crimson Sparta, somehow this name sounds familiar, but I do not believe we have faced them before.

Ok, the group has been determined, ranked 14th should give Dennisov a slight edge in this group, but only slightly so, the ranked teams are all reasonably close together with a mere 16 points between the highest and the lowest. And then of course the unranked teams, who knows what they will bring, probably football players, but you can never be prepared enough.

Jacques and Brian, any last comments:
JM: play to win
BL: Yes

Thank you Jacques and Brian, we will be seeing you on the pitch soon for the first games against Jurimaxistan and Getsamtkuntswerk.
While you will be listening to our political broadcast I will start practising the player names. Good night!

DUM DUM DUMMMM!!!

Welcome to Sports Report, on channel one with your hosts, Jeremy Jaffacake and Malcolm McVities.

Hello and welcome to our new-look studio, in keeping with our new-look Audioslavian national team which embarks on it's first world cup match for around 2 and a half years since our narrow exit from the WCV qualifiers.

The wait has enabled Audioslavia to spend time on a thriving national league system which is heralded 20 new faces for the tournament in Kingsford, plus the older faces of Cornell, Morello and one Zacheria De La Rocha.

De La Rocha has always been a mainstay in the side. Despite not being completely reliable, what with his habit of getting sent off in important games and stuff.

Youd have thought he would have got the anger out of his system after a decade screaming obsenities at thousands of people, but no...

Lets have a run-down of Audioslavia's group and fixtures:

Friends and Comrades,

Visiting footballers to Errinundera will be hosted in the capital, First Creek Falls, which is located at the base, the top and behind the 600 metre waterfall of the same name.

The populace resides in trees at the base of the falls. In order that the national animal, the long-footed potoroo, may frolic freely, it is illegal to disturb the ground in any way beneath the trees. All the trees are owned by the Free State of Errinundera. People rent trees at market rates from government and build tree-houses of any design they choose provided the tree is healthy and the house is built safely. There is a magnificent array of aerial walkways between trees that grow as high as 130 metres: mountain ash, alpine ash, shining gum, messmate and cut-tail (also known as brown barrel). The gullies below feature the most loved of all the trees - the southern sassafras, with its lime green foliage and Enid Blyton toytown shape. The most sought after locations are naturally close to the falls where the constant spray from the falls allows magnificent fern and epiphyte gardens to flourish in the trees.

Other than shops, which can also be built in the trees, all business and administrative buildings are located on the plateau at the summit of the falls. Regulations prohibit these buildings from being visible from the tree houses. An extensive but hidden elevator network has been mined in the rock behind the falls so that people can quickly and easily go about their business.

The greatest threats to this idyllic lifestyle are bush-fire and political skullduggery. On Black Friday (13 January 1939) over 6,000 perished when a crown fire raged through the house trees. This prompted the then Protector to implement the notorious "War Against Bushfirism" policy which severely curtailed human rights throughout Errinundera. Historians estimate that somewhere between 12,000 and 30,000 Errinundrians died as a direct consequence of this policy. In a backlash against this dark time in our history, the people began the great, peaceful civil disobedience campaign which culminated in that particular Protector shooting himself - the last known gun death in the country - on 7 December 1941, now celebrated as Liberation Day.

On Ash Wednesday (16 February 1983) another bush-fire destroyed Upper First Creek Falls, wiping out many businesses much to everyone's glee. This part of the city has been completely re-built since, with the marshes and creek (river really) being developed into a beautiful "water quarter" as it is affectionately called. Transport between all buildings is by gondola. Much to the embarrassment of Errinundrians the largest (and ugliest) building in the water quarter had been, until recently, headquarters of NGDV Ltd, Errinundera's notorious woodchip export company. After Errinundera qualified for WC5, happy revellers razed the building.

Errinundrians in general, and Falls Folk (as they call themselves) in particular, know that they will never be rich but they have a smugness, that is internationally irritating, because they know they live in paradise. Along with this smugness is a tendency to ban things that are contrary to their nature. Among banned items are meat, cars, cigarettes, guns, police and armed forces. Due to progressive social policies there is virtually no crime. And, as no NationState has yet developed the necessary technology, there are no fears that Errinundera will be invaded.

Visitors to Errinundera are warned that no dead animal products are allowed into the country. The flourishing Ploser Ltd can provide teams with the finest quality football gear made from a microfibre that is indistinguishable from leather. Team dietitians need to take into account the needs of the players under a vegetarian regime within Errinundera.

Environmental concerns do not permit the building of a football stadium within First Creek Falls proper. The national stadium, seating 32,000, is located at Frosty Hollow, about 30 km to the northeast of First Creek Falls. Qualifying matches will be held in winter and, given that Frosty Hollow is about 1200 metres above sea level, teams are warned that snow is quite possible during matches.

Transport to the ground is by rail, which is free. Public transport is comprehensive and there are no restrictions on travel within the country. Visiting footballers will be feted wherever they go.

Errinundrians may have banned many pernicious things but generally speaking they are egalitarian to a fault. Few people lock their house-trees. Besides, not being terribly materialistic, they have very little worth stealing. Few Errinundrians have a television, let alone a home entertainment centre. Since WC5 Errinundrians have placed thousands of huge screens in public places where they can watch the football matches in a community carnival atmosphere. Visitors can feel free to hop up on anyone's home for a chat. Don't be alarmed if you see naked people among the treetops - it's just the way they are. Errinundrians are also fairly relaxed about sex.

Good luck and enjoy your football.

If the Brazillican footballing authorities are so inclined, Gilmeecia is willing to host a friendly match as part of the Chili Bats' world tour. Though the Gilmeecian National Stadium is, properly, a shed, it is a shed that seats over 75, and that sits adjacent to a piece of ground that could likely be mown, if some nation with advanced agricultural tehcnology could lend us the borrow of a weedwhacker and a tractor. We would also be willing to build a second shed, to increase the seating capacity to 150.

Well, the Brazillico World Tour is starting to shape up quite nicely, as four stops have been confirmed thusfar.

Game 1 - Squornshelous
Game 2 - Kaze Progressa
Game 3 - Oglethorpia
Game 4 - Gilmeecia

Brazillico is still looking for more participants in their football tour of the world. Although a final match against hosts Kingsford has not been confirmed, Brazillico Football Association president Ronaldo Charis is confident it could still happen.

Kingsford will host the Brazillico team, during the Rock and Goal! festival, sponsored by Swan Song guitars. The match will be held in the city of Byrana, and the Brazillico team is invited to stay the week and witness world class soccer and rock music, with full VIP privaleges.

EDIT: Would the Brazillico team be interested in playing one or two club level teams, from both Kingsford or Oglethorpia? Just an idea.
22-07-2003, 17:06
With six of the 10 stops now confirmed on Brazillico's World Tour after their victory of the previous World Cup, it appears this tour will be a great success. Svecia, the World's second ranked team, has put their name down to participate in what will be a rematch of last cup's semi-final and promises to be a very-high profile friendly as the World's top two seeds duke it out. In addition, the final stop on the tour has been confirmed as Brazillico will play a friendly against Kingsford as part of the Rock and Goal! festival, leading up to the World Cup.

Game 1 - Squornshelous
Game 2 - Kaze Progressa
Game 3 - Oglethorpia
Game 4 - Gilmeecia
Game 5 - Svecia
Final Game - Kingsford

Only four stops left.. dont miss out on this chance!

OOC: If you want a club team to play instead of your national team.. that's alright... I'll let the individual countries decide between that themselves. If you're implying on playing both a club team and the national team.. I'm pretty sure that could be worked out too... although the matter of rankings for the club teams would have to be figured out.

The Rock and Goal! Festival in Byrana takes place over a week, and the Brazillico vs. Kingsford match would be on the last day, but I've got some fine club teams that would be very interested in playing a team of your stature, mainly Byrana FC. If you want to come for the whole week, you can, and if you do, Byrana FC would be more than happy to be clobbered by you. Otherwise, I'll see you on the last day.

Oglethorpia Opens Up World Cup On Disappointing Note

The acclaimed Oglethorpian World Cup team, ranked 13th in the world opened up World Cup 6 with a disappointing 4 - 4 tie with newcomer Northern Kings. "That's absolutely atrocious play. A. Clay managed to score a goal against them, as well as Kojima, Fitzgerald and Bjorn bringing up goals, but unfortunately they also managed to let 4 goals get by them," said an angry Coach Adam Wyneberg. "Especially considering we're a world class team playing against a newcomer to the Cup."

"We played terrible," reiterated team captain Phillip Bjorn, playing his third World Cup. "We let their forwards get through and they scored 4 on Hernandez in the box. It's especially unnerving to know that we let that happen against a team who's playing their first Cup." Oglethorpia is playing their third World Cup with a three-time veteran squad lined up for WC 6. Perhaps Oglethorpia can pick up their preformance in the coming games.

First Match Inconclusive

The first qualifying match for World Cup 6 took place today in Christofi. The always-energetic Bedistan Lions were ready to break out and show the world what they were truly made of.

"After last Cup, where we had to come in through the back door, so to speak, we want to get it done the right way this time," said team coach Jim Parker just before the team left from Columbia International Airport bound for Christofi.

It is reported that very large amounts of betting were taking place in Bedistan regarding the game, pitting the 27th-ranked Lions against the team immediately below them at 28th. "It'll probably be a tie, but I'm still willing to bet my money on a win for the Lions today," said man on the street Bill Grumfeld as he held up three thousand bakrani in cash.

Bedistan struck very early in the game, with Lewis and Whitehurst making repeated attacks on the Christofian goal, but their unidentified keeper easily parried the shots. Finally, in the 36th minute, team captain Gene Barber sent in a long kick from midfield that the keeper missed by mere centimeters, making it 1-0 Bedistan.

At the half, Coach Parker elected to remove midfielder Ken Sierra from the game, putting in new defender Brett Williams in his place. Parker thought the 5-3-2 would help the Lions keep the lead. Unfortunately, one Christofi forward managed to get the ball past goalkeeper Olivia Bream in the 77th minute, tying the game at one goal each. That's how it remained for the rest of the game.

"Oh man, that was exhilirating," said Williams, who was playing his very first international match today. "I think we did pretty good out there today. A tie against Christofi is nothing to be ashamed of." Other team members generally echoed his opinion.

The team has already left Christofi en route to their next away game against The Midnight Armies.

Final score:
Christofi 1 (77)
Bedistan 1 (Barber 36)

So, does any nation out there have the agricultural technology required to help us clear the National Stadium of its overgrowth? This involves some heavy mowing and the removal of a couple of stumps. Well, trees, really. Or to be more specific, the cutting, chipping, hauling, and root-removal of a grove of Gilmeecian Prickly Thorntrees.

Also, any nation with architects capable of designing a shed to hold the 150 expected observers, please come forward. It turns out that our shed has collapsed under the weight of the rats. Oh, and if anyone has any advanced rat-removal technology they can lend, we'd be much obliged.

We want to put forth the best Gilmeecia has to offer for the Brazillican national team, so any assistance anyone can lend in this endeavor, would be much appreciated.

Tanah Burung would be happy to play Brazillico in a friendly once again, but seeing as how we've played 7 or 8,000 times, we will not be offended if you want to play someone else. "Be nice to have a real challenge," said Mau Overconfident, equipment manager.

DAILY CROCODILE

The national football squad returned today from its first qualifier, a convincing 3-0 thrashing of Whorecore. The most frightening moment of the match came when navigator Vasco misread the map and flew too low over a mountain range on the way to Whorecore, threatening to rupture the base of the blimp carrying the Crocodiles.

"We're pleased to win the first qualifying match we have ever played, of course, though this was not a great challenge," commented coach Bi Kikere as she polished her nails on the side of the pitch. David Cavaco scored twice for the Crocs, with João Santos marking the third goal. Captain Ab Francisco sat out as the coach experimented with substitute strikers.

"I see the Hooligans won by the same 3-0 score," she added during a postgame facial on board the blimp. "Already they are shaping up to be the only real challenge in this group of nonentities." In the background, Francisco frantically knocked on any wooden objects at hand.

Brazillico's tour of the world is shaping up to be quite the Tour de Force, with two powerhouses adding their names to the participant's list. Europa Brittania, the only team to post a blemish on Brazillico's World Cup record after drawing them 2-2 has agreed to host the team as well as long-time friends, Tanah Burung... two teams who know each other very well and always put forth a good show.

DUM DUM DUMMM

Welcome to Channel One news

The 'slave team were cheered off the field today after their strong two-nothing win over newcomers Great White today. Goalscorers Benson and Richmond were 2 of the more talented hopefuls that graced the Audioslavia national leagues in recent years and their good showing has lead to a strong start to the campaign.

Audioslavia's opposition in group B are all newcomers to World Cup Football and are expected to be of a similar standard, so a succesful qualification run is expected, and needed if Audioslavia are to shake off the tag of "World Cup laughing stocks"

The goals were a header by Benson in the first 10 minutes and a beautiful chip by Richmond in the second half. Audioslavia are tied for the lead after one game but down in third because of goal-difference.

In other news tonight, Audioslavia's sister nation Republic Of Tha Machine were dissapointinly beaten 3-2 tonight in their first world cup game. Following a 2-leg loss to Audioslavia in a friendly, Tha Machine have yet to win a game in international football.

My, how the World Cup has grown....

Perhaps it's time to send our squad out from the Dreamed Realm Beyond again.

The Holy Empire of Alasdair I Frosticus, hosts of World Cup 2 and participants in the first three World Cups (though we've never really covered ourselves in glory) would like to return from our recent self-imposed exile from the affairs of the Nation States and return to footballing action...

I don't know who's sorting these things out these days, but please consider me entered for World Cup 7!

Brazillico's Championship Tour got underway tonight in Squornshelous, the fifth ranked team in the World. With the home team still riding out the buzz that sent shockwaves through the footballing world, there was a palpable sense of excitement leading up to the match.

The first half, was a scoreless affair... although not a dull one as both teams threw caution to the wind, manufacturing more than their fair share of chances, while the goalies and defenders had to be on the top of their games.

With the wide open style of play, new addition to the Brazillico squad, Salazar, was able to take advantage. After collecting the ball at midfield in the 56th Minute, he made a mad dash through the Squornshelous zone, avoiding two tackles before putting the ball home in the lower-left corner.

The upbeat tempo of the game continued until the final whistle, with Squornshelous's best chance coming in the 75th Minute on a howling shot by their star midfielder which had the keeper beat, but bounced off the woodwork and out of play.

So, the first stop on the Brazillico World Tour has been quite a success. The Squornshelous fans were able to watch an entertaining match while Brazillico was able to get a difficult away win against a top 5 team in the world. Brazillico will now be off to Kaze Progressa, the relatively unknown country in the football world to promote the sport in the small country and bring attention to their football program.

OOC: Sorry about the pretty slack match report, Manchester vs Celtic will be on any minute now and no way am I missing that.
Gilmeecia
23-07-2003, 04:29
Press Secretary Gig Milkerson: Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the Oppressed Peoples of Gilmeecia.

President Louis Gilsterson: Thank you. My fellow Gilmeecians, foreigners of the press, any foreign leaders who may be listening-- especially any foreign leaders who may be listening-- it is with humble sadness that I address you this night. Some of you may have heard the news report today about the unfortunate loss of our National Stadium to rats. Well, it's true, maybe we should have checked on the condition of the Stadium before putting in a bid to host a football game against the world champion Brazillico Chili Bats who are currently making their way through a lucky handful of nations, laying those nations' national teams to waste. Maybe we got ahead of ourselves, let our excitement at the possibility of hosting the Brazillicans cloud our thinking. I'm not saying mistakes weren't made. I'm even willing to go so far as to say, mistakes were made. I will lay my re-election bid on the line right now by going so far as to say: someone in my administration screwed up. It wasn't me. But it was someone I appointed. Someone I put all my trust in. Someone I would have considered smart enough to check whether there were rats on the roof of the National Stadium before putting in a bid to host the Chili Bats. I am talking of course about the Gilmeecian Foreign Minister, my brother-in-law, Ned Itchlesby. Ned, come on up here and get what's coming to you.

Foreign Minister Ned Itchlesby: Sorry, Lou.

Pres: Don't tell me, tell the people of Gilmeecia. And Brazillico.

FM: Sorry. Hey, I'm the Foreign Minister. I ain't some kinda rat exterminator or somethin'. I mean, who'd a though the shed was infested with rats? It's not like there's anything there for them to eat. It's just an old abandoned shed by an overgrown field. Don't rats usually infest, like, slums and tenements, where there's poor people for 'em to eat?

Pres: Whoa, whoa, where'd that come from? Rats don't eat people. Do they? Somebody look it up.

FM: Anyway, my point is that I apologize to all the people whose lives I've ruined by failing to stop Lou from putting in a bid to host this foot game thing.

Pres: Okay, Ned, enough apologizing. You're crappy at it. Look, people, we all know no one's life has been ruined. I don't see why one lousy report about the National Stadium collapsing under the weight of the rats should take fifteen points off my poll numbers. That's all I'm saying.

FM: You people are a bunch of ungrateful ingrates! Anybody who doesn't vote for Lou just 'cause of these rats is gonna get his ass kicked by a special Secret Police squad, I'm tellin' ya!

Pres: Okay, Ned, don't forget we're standin' in front of the foreign press here. Any of you people who come from countries who like to go invading people over "civil rights abuses," just ignore what Ned said just now. He's weak in the head. My sister only married him out of pity. Now look, here's the point: Um... One: Ned screwed up. Didn't check on the structural integrity of the shed, er, I mean the National Stadium, before we offered it up as a sporting venue. Two: For the love of god, someone lend us a tiller and a crane and a big-ass chipper-shredder and some rat traps! If we don't get 'em, we're going to have to pull out of the game. And nobody wants that. Not us, not the Brazillicans, not even the rats. If you can't spare a tractor, what about a lawn mower and an ax? That would be a good start. Maybe we could scare up some kids in the juvie home and make 'em clear the land. As to rebuilding the shed, I don't know. I have no idea what's involved in doing something like that. I imagine we'll need wood, maybe nails, and some kind of rock or something to pound the nails in with. And how do you cut wood? In case some of the pieces are the wrong size. Can we get some of that? Is that something one of you nations that have been around longer than two days could help us out with? Okay, I'll take a couple of questions now, but only from the local press. We couldn't afford translators, so I'd have no idea what you foreigners are saying, anyway. Um... Gillian.

GG: Gillian Gilquester, Gilmeecian Times-Ledger. Mr. President, were any of the rats injured in the collapse of the National Stadium?

Pres: To the best of our knowledge, none of the rats were injured.

GG: Will there be an investigation into the possibility that rats may have been injured in the collapse?

Pres: Absolutely. We want to make damn sure that no rats were injured. Glick?

GM: Glick Masterson, Gilmeecian Nightly News. Has anyone been implicated in the collapse, Mr. President?

Pres: Way to pitch the hardball, Glick. Um, so far, Ned is the only one implicated. That's Ned Itchlesby, Foreign Minister. Blintz?

BM: Blintz Mitersaw, National Times of Gilmeecia Weekly. Has there been any decision regarding Mr. Itchlesby's fate, should it turn out that he was in fact responsible for the collapse of the National Stadium?

Pres: He'll get an ass-kicking. Delivered by yours truly. Gillian?

GG: Will that be the full extent of his punishment, sir?

Pres: And then he may be eviscerated.

GG: But he will not be removed from office?

Pres: Not as long as he's married to my sister. Blintz?

Blintz: Not to belabor the point, Mr. President, but my readers want to know: how long will the investigation take?

Pres: You mean the investigation into the condition of the rats after the collapse of the stadium?

Blintz: Yes, sir.

Pres: Less than a week. We just have to send a team of experts in there with magnifying glasses and scanners and stuff and look for any sign of injuries.

Blintz: What sort of signs will they be looking for, sir?

Pres: Blood, loose hairs, feces that may have been exuded when the rats shit themselves in fear as the stadium collapsed-- that sort of thing. Damien?

DD: Damien Deardsley, Early Edition, Gilmeecia Channel G. Does the Gilmeecian government have a team of experts properly equipped for the investigation, Mr. President?

Pres: Ah... no. If any foreign heads of state watching this program could possibly lend us a team of expert investigators to help us look into the question of whether any rats were injured in the collapse of the Gilmeecian National Stadium, we would certainly appreciate it. Okay, time for one last question. Gillian?

GG: And once the investigators have completed their work, what steps will be taken?

Pres: Well, once the investigators are safely out of the area, we'll be sending in a squad of heavily armed men to eradicate all traces of rats from the area. We want to make sure that the National Stadium is vermin-free for the game.

Secretary Milkerson: There will be no further questions. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Good night.

BIG WIN OVER WORLD CUP NEOPHYTES

SHOCK WITHDRAWAL OF STAR STRIKER

(Side by side pictures of oreadest celebrating a goal and a file picture of grim-faced antarticad in civies)

Star striker, antarcticad, was forced to withdraw with a mystery stomach ailment shortly before Errinundera’s first game of World Cup 6 against Hegemonia Polska at a cracklingly cold Frosty Hollow National Stadium. This didn’t prevent his regular partner up forward, oreadest, from leading a goal spree against the hapless newcomers. Even before the break Errinundera had scored 3 goals (oreadest 13 & 39, longipesp 44) to nil and going into the second half there were fears of an almighty blowout. This was not to be and the Polskayites put in a competitive effort to match the hosts for the half. The game finished at Errinundera 4 Hegemonia Polska 1 with first-gamer firset (a last minute inclusion after the withdrawal of antarcticad) coming off the bench to score a goal with his first kick ever in an international at the 61 minute mark.

Much interest before the game was centred upon the hairstyles that antarcticad and oreadest would sport for this campaign. Unfortunately we cannot report upon the former, however oreadest has kept his trademark fire-cracker red but introduced a new style. There are 20-30 dreadlocks that stick out horizontally then curve upwards over his head. It is supposed that this is meant to represent the national flower, the East Gippsland waratah. We think it looks stupid. Errinundrian fans chanted, “Wanker. Wanker,” at every available opportunity. We wait with baited breath for antarcticad’s new look.

eallcott, the team physio, told reporters after the game that antarcticad was suffering from food poisoning. Given the molly-coddled way that star footballers are treated we found this surprising. When pressed, a tight-lipped eallcott would only say that the star player had reacted badly after the team dinner the previous night and had spent the next 12 hours in hospital.

Errinundera’s star goalkeeper, and captain / coach, fionar, expressed the hope that he would recover in time for the next match in Mezitzia. “Despite this setback, the team is off to a great start. We have set our goal to make the top 16 in this world cup. With the huge improvement since WC5 in the play of our key forwards and the further development of our backs we believe this goal is quite achievable.”
23-07-2003, 06:50
"We are deeply saddened by the collapse of the shed which was to house the hosting of our match against Gilmeecia," said Brazillico Football Association president, Ronaldo Charis. "If another venue can be found to play, we would be more than happy to come to Gilmeecia."

Ronaldo Charis went on about the future of Gilmeecia.

"It's quite disconcerting that a nation of FIFA's premier venue can only house 15 people," said Charis, "I propose, if we could win some regional and international support in conjunction with the Gilmeecian authorities to build a stadium in Gilmeecia to replace their now destroyed shed. The propostion at hand would be a stadium ( http://www.tsn.ca/images/stories/20030721/stadium_64722.jpg ) to house 30,000 fans, coming with a price tag of 55 million USD. We would be willing to spring for 25 Million of the total price tag, and be willing to loan you the other 30 Million, giving no other countries join in the cause to build this stadium and encourage the spread of football to other nations of the world."
23-07-2003, 11:23
Errinundera cordially invites Brazillico to our populous nation to give us lesson in football and to demonstrate to our teeming populace your exquisite grace.

A national holiday will be proclaimed on match day and extra giant screens will be set up in public places for the edification of the people.

NEWSFLASH:

Giant Zucchini starts off qualifying with a bright note, thrashing BK_Samurai 3-0 at home. Head Coach Mr. Hurr, "Particularly, in the beginning of the game, we controlled and played very well. We scored and created many chances. At the end of the first half, we saw signs of some players being tired. There were problems created by the big pressure on players, and this pressure affected us and also in the match against BK_Samurai today. But now we are relieved in every way and I believe it is going to be better."

Giant Zucchini - 3
BK_Samurai - 0
Post Match Analysis:

It was a good match, with goals too. Giant Zucchini were anxious to pile on the pressure right from the kick-off, and they succeeded. By the time the game was eight minutes old, they had already scored twice, albeit a little luckily. After that, they controlled the game perfectly and even upped the tempo again near the end of the match.

On the whole, both teams played attractive football, seeking to retain possession and launch quick counters. This was the area where Giant Zucchini, with Man of the Match Urk and Phoot ahead of him, had the upper hand. The Zucchinis deserved to go through. They played well against BK_Samurai today.

The first half was undoubtedly the crucial part of the game. The first early goal provided the Zucchinis with a timely confidence boost and allowed them to dictate the game from then on, pressurising the Samurais and pinning them back in their own half. It was a highly efficient performance.

***** ASPN NEWS SPECIAL WORLD CUP 6 REPORT *****

*the new aspn sports theme (if anything, more inappropriate to sports than the old theme) can be heard, just a few decibles too loud. we see, in rapid sequence, two fabulous goals being scored, a magnificent save, and the hooligan cheerleader being bombarded with extremely ripe vegetables - all with a transparent WC6 logo superimposed. the scene changes to the new ASPN sports desk - which looks like the old ASPN sports desk with a blue table cloth draped over it*

The Snub Nose 38 Hooligans are once again participating in Qualifying Matches for the World Cup. In their first match yesterday the Hooligans faced a newcomer to the World Cup Tournament, Benjibouti. The match featured a very determined Hooligan side, evidenced by this initial goal in the 8th minute.

*a hooligan player is seen 'nut-megging' a benjibouti defender, slipping around him, and dribbling the ball virtually down the throat of the benjibouti keeper. the keeper comes out and makes a valiant attempt to save, but the hooligan slips the ball past the keeper and into the net*

Snub Nose 38 1 - Benjibouti 0. The Benjibouti team came close to tieing in the 15th minute with a diving header that hit the near post, rebounded straight down the goal line, hit the far post, and rebounded out to the 6, where it was cleared by the Hooligans.

*we see the benjibouti striker dive and strike the ball with his head, which rebounds off the near post, strikes the far post, bounces down at the 6 and is cleared by...well, you get the picture*

The match began to get a little out of the referees control towards the end of the first period when the Hooligan center midfielder made a nasty tackle.

*cut to a hooligan player as he slide tackles a benjibouti player from behind, and hooks his leg around the benjibouti players leg. as the players untangle, the benjibouti player takes a swing at the hooligan, catching him on the shoulder. the hooligan swings back. several nearby players from both sides get between them and keep them apart, calming them down. the referee runs into the picture with yellow card held high, indicating the hooligan player first, and then the benjibouti player.*

At the half, the score remained Benjibouit 0 - SN38 Hooligans 1. The Hooligan Cheerleaders took the field.

*the hooligan cheerleaders run onto the field. they form a rough "38", and begin*

"Snub Nose Hooligans, they're our men
if they can't beatcha, nobody can
Hooligans, Hooligans, get outta their way
or they'll knock you aside with their dirty play"

*riot police, standing by for crowd control, turn on the hooligan cheerleaders, cuffing them and dragging them away as nearby fans half-heartedly bean them - literally, with beans*

Second half play stayed even until the 63rd minute, when the Hooligan striker took a long pass neatly, with his back to the goal protecting the ball from two defenders. He then turned and slipped between the two defenders, found himself clear and drilled the ball to the upper far corner. The Benjibouti keeper lunged at the ball but just could not reach it in time. Benjibouti 0 - Snub Nose 38 Hooligans 2.

*video tapes show the hooligan striker taking...well, imagine you're seeing what you just read*

The play continued to be very physical, with the referee finally red-carding one of the Snub Nose 38 Hooligans, Nails, in the 75th minute for a blatant foul. Prior to this incident, Nails had been issued a yellow card in the 72nd minute, and five other yellow cards had been issued in a three minute span - two to Hooligan players and three to Benjibouti players. It is this reporters opinion that any of these offenses could have been red cards.

*we see the benjibouti striker getting past nails at about 25 yards out. nails, the last defender, simply reaches out, grabs the benjibouti player's arm, and falls to the ground dragging the benjibouti player with him.*

Down to 10, the Hooligans fought off a determined Benjibouti side. Waffle, the keeper for the Hooligans today, had eight saves in a 12 minute period. Then, in the 89th minute, on what may have been a fluke, the Hooligans scored a third time.

*a hooligan player just past mid field on the right side switches fields to the left. the hooligan player on the left volleys the ball in flight from about 35 yards, and it flies through a loose group of two benjibouti defenders and two hooligan forwards, who are blocking the keepers view. the ball flies right past the keeper and into the net.*

Benjibouti 0 - Hooligans 3, and after one more minute of regular time and 5 full minutes of added time, that's how the match ended.

In other World Cup 6 news, today the Tanah Burung side arrived in Snub Nose 38 for a Qualifying Match with the Hooligans. Aware that the Hooligan Cheerleaders frequently "greet" arriving opposing sides, Tanah Burung tried to arrive quietly, having chartered a large blimp to take them to the SN38 Capital of Sten, where the match will be played. The blimp carrying the Tanah Burung side by-passed the international airport in Sten, and went directly to the stadium 3 kilometers north of the city.

Someone must have tipped off the Hooligan Cheerleaders, who were at the stadium waiting for the Tanah Burung side. As the chartered blimp descended, the Hooligan Cheerleaders began pelting it with tomatos, potatoes, oranges, eggs, cucumbers, and several rather large pumpkins. Snub Nose 38 special SWAT team members, on hand ostensibly for riot control, subdued the Hooligan Cheerleaders, allowing the Tanah Burung blimp to land and the side to disembark.

*footage of the blimp being pelted with vegetables. a pumpkin is seen to break a window in the gondola of the blimp. the hooligan cheerleaders are shrieking invictives at the tanah burung players, who look a little dazed, but after a moment begin throwing a variety of objects (sneakers, books, a pen and pencil set, a small chihuahua) back at the hooligan cheerleaders. we note that one of the cheerleaders catches the chihuahua just before she is cuffed*

We look forward to the match between Tanah Burung and the Snub Nose 38 Hooligans.

Atheltico Viper finish in a remarkably similiar position to last season, with little gain.

Brittanian Cup Winners Khandrias United by Default hand their UEFA Cup spot to Losing Finalists, in this case Europa Athletic will join Junon Rangers in the fore mentioned competition.

SafeHaven, who endured a torrid season last that almost saw them relegated acheieved it as they quickly sank to the bottom of the table. Londrias Riveria, relegated last season regain their A Division status.

Lhitomer Province manage to remain for a second succesive Season in the top flight, a first for the club.

So to recap-

Atlantis FC will enter the Champion's League as Seeds, Khandrias United will join them.

Both Junon Rangers & Europa Athletic will enter the UEFA Cup.

Join us next season, until then we have the Champions League to saliate us!

"Coach, look at all the people!" an excited substitute called out. "And there are the Hooligan Cheerleaders! So pretty! The colours, coach, the colours!"

As the Cheerleaders began to pelt the blimp with garbage, Bi Kikere's face darkened. "OK people, let's beat the stuffing out of these Hooligans. They're just lucky there's no ex-guerrillas left on our team."

As a sign of respect for the opposition's prowess, Bi Kikere announced that the full Crocodiles starting line-up will play against Snub Nose 38 (which she is referring to as Snub Nose 20 in honour of the team's new rank). She plans to rest at least two star players in all other qualifying matches.

Press Secretary Gig Milkerson: Ladies and gentlemen, the Gilmeecian Foreign Minister.

FM: Arright, now, Lou sent me down here to talk to all you people about this situation with the shed. I mean, the National Stadium. As you all know, it collapsed last week under the weight of a whole bunch of rats that had been sittin’ on top of it. Lou said for me to tell you three things.

One: We are ninety-nine percent certain that none of the rats was injured, except for one small rat who hurt his pinky in the fall. That rat has received appropriate medical attention.

Two: After ascertaining that the rats were okay, we had Ground Forces move in and napalm the whole Stadium zone. Seeing as no one came forth to loan us the necessary equipment to clear the land properly, we decided that torching it would be the best policy. This was also efficacious in eliminating the rat infestation.

Three: Brazillico has offered us twenty-five million lemsonians plus a loan of an additional 30 million to fund the construction of a brand-spankin’-new stadium that will seat the entire population of Gilmeecia. To this offer, we say: F--- yes we want the money. Send it over and keep it comin’. Lou’s already picked out contractors for the job, and they’re down at the site digging a foundation as we speak.

Now this brings us to the question of the upcoming foot game between us an’ Brazillico. Obviously, the new stadium ain’t gonna be completed in two weeks. But here’s what we’re doing. We pulled up all the carpet from our basement. We were plannin’ to get rid of it anyway, ‘cause it’s old and it’s starting to smell funky. It’s a sort of a greenish color, so we’re laying that over the field, which is pretty smooth after the napalming. That’ll make decent turf, right? I mean, we’ll have some kids run around on it to make sure it’s safe before we let foreigners go running around on it, so don’t worry. And we don’t really have a shed for the spectators to sit in during the game, but we do have some pallets from down at the construction site, and we’re gonna stack those up so people can stand on ‘em and see the game. So that should all be fine, and if the Brazillican team doesn’t have any objections, we’ll be all set to play Footgame with you in two weeks. Lou said the national team is looking good. He’s been calling everybody he knows, getting them to come to the practices. We take Footgame very seriously here in Gilmeecia, and I know our guys are gonna give them a run for their money.

Okay? Is that going to hold you people? Thank you. No questions.

The village of Findabaya welcomed its newest member earlier today: Errinunderan exchange footballer codith. The entire village turned out to greet codith, many of them with their hair died green for the occasion, and a few seemed disappointed when the young Errinunderan failed to display the same hair colour. But codith agreed to drape a banana leaf over her head and locals were quickly mollified.

"We're thrilled, ever so thrilled, to welcome codith to our community," said Warung Agus on behalf of the villagers. "We've already taken the dear sprite into our hearts. We love Errinundera, and we were pleased, ever so pleased, when antarcticad and .... antarcticad and the other Big Gorilla Foot established the exchange programme for promising footballers. We'll show young codith what Findabaya the finest hospitality and we know our girl is getting the same over in Errinundera."

She added that there were plans under way for a twinning between the villages of Findabya and Ellery Camp, codith's hometown. "If those bureaucrats down in Ukun Rasikan can get it together, that is."

“Oh yes, put him through.”

La Darien - In the nations first ever World Cup game "les bleus" d'Eauz won in a 2-1 decision against the team from La Darien. Another bright spot for this game was that the team started off its 3 game road trip on a Positive side.

The Coach was quoted saying, " It's good to see that we were capable of competing in a World Cup event. Especially against a Ranked team like La Darien. But we should not become too excited, because this is just one game. One can become excited once we are 10-12 games into the season, and we have a good record."

The fans that were able to travel to La Darien will be celebrating tonight, and also everyone in the capital Zuka as well as the country of Eauz

In a season which yield no surprises at the top, San Chavez FC and Olympic Kalita maintain their spots in the Champions League by finishing first and second in the league again. San Chavez won their fourth league championship in five years, with an identical record as Olympic Kalita, however, they were proclaimed victors with their one goal more in the goal difference.

One of the shocks of the season were third place finishers, Terrabella City, a team laden with young talent showed that the future is now, booking themselves a spot in the UEFA cup. On the other end of the spectrum, the usually strong Athletic Locosi, finished 8th in the overall standings.

The most storied franchise in Brazillico, and last year's UEFA Cup delegate Real San Pablo will be shut down from international competition this year, as their 4th place finish will not be enough for a birth in the UEFA Cup.

On another note, the Brazillico internationals have accepted a match against Giant Zucchini's Marauding FC, completing the itinerary for Brazillico's World Tour.

Press Secretary Gig Milkerson: Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the Oppressed People of Gilmeecia.

President Louis Gilsterson: Thank you. My fellow Gilmeecians, ladies and gentlemen of the national and foreign press, I wish to speak to you tonight about an issue that today is foremost in the minds of all right-thinking Gilmeecians: the upcoming football match against the Jingoistic States of Brazillico. I sent Ned down here the other day to tell you about the progress we’re making in getting the National Stadium prepared for next week’s game. Well, things are coming along nicely. The carpet’s been laid over the ashes, and it really looks a lot like turf. Like a golf green, really. One that’s gotten a little moldy, but it’s still in pretty good condition. We’ve pressed a bunch of single mothers into service sewing the seams together all nice and tight, so no one trips or falls through the turf into the smoldering remains of the field. The smoldering is not really hot enough to feel through some parts of the turf, by the way, so it shouldn’t present any major problems for the players-- who, unlike our unwed mothers, will be wearing shoes while they’re on the field.

Now, we’ve been working on constructing some bleachers, as Ned related to you the other day, and those are looking pretty good. A couple coats of paints and they’ll probably be very comfortable. Just don’t sit on ‘em, of you’re liable to get a nail sticking you in the ass. And of course, stand on ‘em at your own risk, as the government isn’t paying for tetanus shots.

But none of that is what I came down here to talk to you about today. I came down here to share the biggest news to hit Gilmeecia since Dizzy Gillespie played Gilfest ‘83: our beloved dictator, whose name shall never be mentioned, has agreed to spring for a professional commentator to broadcast the game live on Gilmeecian radio. And of course, this being Gilmeecia, where the gilwatchers frolic in the, ironically, napalmed forests, there could be only one person we’d hire for the part: the world-famous Dean of Lemmitanian sports, Gil Lemson. Here to give you the details is the People’s Representative, Lenny Gilmister.

People’s Representative Lenny Gilmister: Thank you, Mr. President. Hear me, people of Gilmeecia. His One-ness has in his benevolence decided that it would be a fitting gesture to hire this Lemson figure to broadcast the football match. To this end, His One-ness ordered the disbursement from the Palace of one small Japanese pickup truck, its bed filled with cash. Under cover of night, a special cadre of Palace Guards drove the pickup to Mr. Lemson’s abode in the Borderlands of Lemmitania, and undertook to engage Mr. Lemson in a contract to broadcast said game. His One-ness is pleased to authorize myself to announce that Mr. Lemson has signed the contract and will be transported to Gilmeecia post-haste in order to broadcast said et cetera. I now return control of the press conference to your duly elected and therefore beloved President.

Pres: Thanks, Mr. Gilmister. Always nice to hear from the Big Guy. So there you have it, people. Gil Lemson’s gonna be coming right here to Gilmeecia to call the game for you. I hope you people appreciate the expense and trouble that His One-ness went to on this. Show your support by voting for me in the upcoming elections. No questions. Good night.

So it is... almost.

What is the range of the random number? 0-999? 1-1000? Something entirely else?

If you want me to do it, let me know. Feel free to consult with the rest of the WCC before making your decision, TnUI.

News item from the Ellery Camp Pravda

YOUNG TANAH BURUNG SOCCER HOPEFUL SHIVERS WITH EXCITEMENT

(Picture of young Tanah Burung woman, Canabe Livit, gazing at football star antarcticad who appears a bit green about the gills. Fellow star oreadest is looking on. Canabe Livit is wearing antarcticad's trademark haircut from WC5. They are all standing at the base of the mighty mountain grey gum known as PELLOCAR. There is a light smattering of snow about.)

Today Ellery Camp welcomed into its arms the first young person from the Tanah Burung village Findabaya. Canabe Livit has come to Errinundera as part of young footballer exchange program organized by the Head Lady of Findabaya and homevillage heroes, antarcticad and oreadest.

Canabe Livit is clearly excited by the prospect of her stay here and in the intensive training she will receive in the newly established football academy to be run by the eminent former footballer rodm. We asked her what she was looking forward to most. "I hope to learn so much about Errinundrian culture while I am here. The welcoming ceremony under the canopy of PELLOCAR was so moving. I learned today that the name of the tree means "The cup of life". The reverence you have for your trees is amazing. If only the global logging companies in Tanah Burung could show a fraction of your respect." Master of Ceremonies for the occasion, antarcticad, pointed out that the First Creek Falls folk had found the perfect solution: "They trash logging company headquarters with their own equipment." Ellery Camp mayor, washingd, seconded the statement.

We also asked Canabe Livit what her first impressions of Errinundera were. "Firstly, it's so cold," she said. "Everyone warned me how dangerous the bushfires were and, right now, here it is snowing. I've never seen snow before. It's beautiful. I suppose it IS the middle of winter. Do summers really get that dangerous? Secondly, I can't get over how almost everyone lives in the trees. From here I can look over a broad valley and not see a single building or road. Instead there are enormous spreading trees as far as the eyes can see with beautiful skywalks curving between them."

The young Tanah Burung star won't be spending all her time kicking balls. The academy has a rigorous academic program that has been approved by the Findabaya Head Lady, Warung Agus. Additionally Canabe Livit will spend periods in other parts of Errinundera, getting to know the people throughout the nation. "Already I'm looking forward to seeing the famous McKillops Bridge and Waratah Flat and Goonmirk Rocks and First Creek Falls. Oh dear, there is so much to do."

But 10 year old bakerd, swinging upside-down from one of PELLOCAR's lofty branches, surely spoke for all Errinundrians when he said, "I hope she can be my friend."

(Close up picture of the upside down smiling head of bakerd with an obviously big drop below him and Canabe Livit - the right way up - laughing with him.)

OOC: what the hell - i was only away for 4 days!

IC :
Gary Luniker: Well with the end of the domestic season, we can now look forward to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Halfassedstates have been lucky in the draw and are actually the top seeded team in group 7.

Alun Hansun: Yes Gary, we have been lucky with the draw, only ourselves and Dead Man are actually seeded. We should have a good chance of getting through to the WC itself, although we must remember that in the last WC the top seeds in our group failed to make it through!

GL: True, folk here still talk about doing 'an Audio' four years later!!
Whats your view on group winners then Alun?

AH:
Well after having looked at a few things and speaking to a couple of folks in the pub I think the group winners should be;
Group 1 - TnUI with possible surprises being Liverpool England
Group 2 - It has to be Audioslavia - I can't see them failing again
Group 3 - I have a feeling that Giant Zucchini will come out of their recent slump, tho Oglethorpia should run them close and the Dark Outcasts could have a good run if they improve the defence
Group 4 - It has to be the Lunatic Goofballs, tho my team to watch would be The Machine
Group 5 - Tanah Burung will walk this one - I think the Snub Nose 38 crew have peaked. I would also be surprised if they don't have to play their home games behind closed doors after the antics of their 'supporters' recently
Group 6 - Difficult to call, but i'm opting for Christofi just edging it from Runaway Moose
Group 7 - I have to say ourselves, but its difficult to tell what the others will perform like
Group 8 - This should be another close one, I feel Dennisov will hold off One Red Dot for the group win
Group 9 - The Lowland Clans - simply because they were the only team i manged to find any info on!!

GL: Fair enough Alun. Well until the cup final next weekend, thats all from us, congratualtions once again to the Platypi on the Championship victory.
From all of us here at 'Game of the Day' good night.

*for a second time that morning the Minister of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages was startled by something in the sports pages of "Scuttlebutt". the Minister slams down his beer (instantly regretting that, as he spills quite a bit in the process.)*
- Margaret!!
- Yes, Minister?
- Look at this. That lune Luniker picked Tanah Burung over the Hooligans.
- Well, sir, they are ranked higher, and...
- So!! So!!
*the Minister stuggles to control his spluttering. Margaret sighs in anticipation of another tantrum*
- Get the Hooligan Cheerleaders coach on the phone. And get the sides Manager over here immediately.
- Sir, it's lunch time. Neither of them will be available right now.
- Oh...well, I want Ben Dover in my office first thing this afternoon. Tell him to bring Eileen with him. I want to hear a blow by blow of how they're gonna beat Tanah Burung. And get the coach of those irresponsible cheerleaders on the phone first thing, too!
*Margaret sighs again. everyday it's something with this bozo, she thinks*
- Yes, sir. I'll arrange that for you.
*as Margaret goes off to arrange the afternoon schedule for the Minister, we can hear the Minister mumbling under his breath*
- play our matches behind closed doors, eh? the heck you say!
*the Minister of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages for the Borderlands of Snub Nose 38 picks up his beer and takes a healthy swig. a little dribbles down his chin.*

Team Sidetracks to Play Friendly Match

After arriving in the land of The Midnight Armies on Tuesday afternoon, the Bedistan Lions found that they apparently had quite a bit more time than they expected before the start of their second qualifying match there. On an invitation, they took the opportunity to make a quick side trip to Aquilla to play their Group 6 rivals in a friendly match. Aquilla was at the time preparing for a home game against Christofi, whom the Lions had recently tied 1-1 in their first WC6 qualifying match. The match ended a few hours ago, but results have not yet been announced. Immediately after the game, the Bedistani team flew back to The Midnight Armies to continue preparations for their game there.

Burung Broadcasting....

... indignantly denied the report in the Errinundrian press about global logging companies operating in Tanah Burung, adding that foreign investment of any kind remained strictly forbidden.

And now for the Slurp Report, with your host Mau Slurp

Mau Slurp: Hola to all you out there in futbal-land! Yes folks, it's Spanish i'm mangling today! World Cup qualifiers are under way, and how will you know how to bet if the house doesn't name its picks now? It's tricky cuz a humble gambling baron like myself can't understand how nine groups gets us 24 qualifiers, but let's say top two in each group and the next-best six sides.

Group one, a doozy. I'm going with rankings and fame here: TnUI and Errinundera are the best-ranked and the best-known teams. I think Quohog, once a football power, is just about done its run in the sun.

Group two, what to do? I pick Parvoo, though it's pretty much out of a hat and because it rhymes. The big question, which one is the real Audioslavia: are they the pathetic losers of their opening games four years ago, or the never-say-die fighters of the home stretch when they almost went through? I say they're fighters, and they'll make it this time.

Group three, wouldnt want to be there. A former champ, three more ranked teams, some hot newcomers. I say the Zucchinis go through, Oglethorpia goes through, and our near and dear neighbours in Eauz go through with 'em. Dark Outcasts and LaDarien, i think, are going to be pipped at the post.

Group four, nevermore. Nevershadow is my dark horse pick to advance, with the top spots going, natch, to Goofballs and Pure Evil, two from the last Cup.

Group five. Well, you know i'm picking the Crocs and Snub Nose 38.

Group six. Ouch, a tough tough draw for all these folks. Are Ironchefk and Bedistan, hot newcomers last Cup, for real? I say yes, they're going to keep up their form and surprise again with the top two spots. Runaway Moose can be through too. As for Christofi, Haraki, Alhana Catherine and the rest, they are just outa luck this year. None of you'll shed any tears for the God-nuts from Christofi though, willya?

Group seven, dead easy. Halfassedstates will sleepwalk through a half-assed group. Dead Man to join them, and Vegemite too maybe.

Group eight, another doozy. I like Gesamkuntswerk to start pulling out some wins, and former champ Dennisov to go through with them. Ravenspire, well i think they'll do the least they can to qualify, but they'll go through in third. One Red Dot? One long goodbye.

Group nine, no clue what this group is even for. Anyone's guess from this list of unknowns. My guess is Akbarland and Lomina.

[OOC: *finds result* *boggles* Wow, how'd that happen? I guess this is why we're going to 2 games against each opponent now. 8) ]

KM: ...And in sports, a shocking upset by Australian Marsupials ends in a 2-0 loss for Ravenspire's team.

MB: This is the first time the Ravens have lost in the qualifiers in three Cups. It probably had to happen eventually, but it's not a very heartening sign in the first game, particularly since it's not a one-point fluke, and against a new team to boot.

KM: Many fans fixated on the absence of Zhen Sui-Ling, Mike. Do they have a point?

MB: Kath, the feeling is, the team manager hasn't been playing straight regarding Sui-Ling's health, and at this point I'm afraid I'd have to agree. But her absence isn't responsible for the loss. There was some lax play on the Ravens' part. Keeper Zhen Bao was definitely having an off day, letting a penalty shot through in addition to a regular goal, both late in the game. The rest of the defense probably had let themselves get overconfident. We'll hope this serves as a wake-up call.

KM: Meanwhile, the striker team of Amara Akizuki and foxgirl Kaede Kitsuki was unable to overcome the AM defense, despite ten attempts on goal.

MB: A valiant effort, though, and I think we'll see some great play from them in future games.

KM: Let's hope it's good enough to recover from tonight's debacle. Until next time, I'm Kathryn Malley...

MB: And I'm Michael Black...

KM: ...For RNN.

I mean, it takes like 2 seconds to get a full day's results. What's going to take another ten minutes is typing the results into a post. So I'm going to put up day 3. If day 3 was already done, ignore what follows...</OOC>

OOC: I'm still waiting for matchday 2....did I miss a post somewhere? :?

Holy crapalooie. All right, hold the phone. Let me go look over the thread. And here I just got done typing up day 3. Oh well, I guess it's ready in advance.

Okay, I've obviously been in Gilmeecia the last few days. Indeed, only matchday one results have been posted. It took me longer to check over the thread, with my slow computer (I have DSL but the computer can hardly keep up with it) than it does to do a day's results! So now I'll do day 2. See you in fifteen minutes.

Greg Graham: Hello, and welcome to Clan Sports Network, I'm Greg Graham and this is my partner, James Connoly *motions*

JC: Yes thank you Greg. Today in World Cup 6 action, the Allied States national team took on the team from Rave Shantavo, ready to redeem themselves from that heart breaking loss two days ago against Ackbarland.

GG: Yes, star midfielder and captain Kevin Deeboss is looking to rebound from that horrible mistake that caused the winning goal in the 89th minute last game.

JC: The game didn't look to good for the team, and the first half was completely dominated by Rave Shantavo, with only the miraculous hands of Jason Pilikos, who started this game after regular starter Graham Thurder tore a small muscle in his ankle and is expected to be back next game, saved the Clanners from falling behind severly. Even though his best efforts, he gave up a goal 35 thorugh the furst half.

GG: But an inspirational speech from Kevin gave the Clanner squad the strength it needed to pull through, and it showed in the second half. They were able to take control of the game in the second half and Deeboss was able to set up Striker Vassilios Grassi for a beautiful header in the 67th minute to tie the game.

JC: It ended that way, but the Clanner squad put up a valiant fight to keep us in the race for World Cup glory. In other news, the TLC Stars won the Western final....

Liverpool England team kicks off World Cup with Disappointing Defeats
The team, which have already played group favourites TnUI, losing 1-2, and Quohog, losing 4-5, are now not expected to pull off more than a draw in their next match.

The coach has been sacked after the loss to Quohog, with Jim Whites being called up to lead LE in the remainder of the qualifying. Liverpool England, however, are tipped to pull off a comeback and win the group with the remaining 12 games.

Not going to RP the result this time around. I'll wait until we start getting more reasonable scores. :? ]

Dear Mumsi,

This has been a horrid trip with hardly any redeeming features. Things started of poorly and ended up dismally and, in between those two high points, there was, quite simply, nothing to smile about.

As you know we travelled the last leg to Mezitzia by sea. The first inkling we had of what was to come was the fleet of warships in the harbour as we arrived. Many of the ships were crowded with troops and the piers all around resounded with the tramp of thousands of marching boots. The most peculiar thing was that the soldiers were always accompanied by strange men in flowing garments, huge funny hats and holding glittering staffs. All the military personnel deferred to them.

For most members of the entourage this was only our second visit overseas after Tanah Burung and what a contrast it was to that sunny nation. I had never seen a gun until now: here they were everywhere. The spirit of the team, buoyant since WC5, quailed even before we set foot on land. Customs officials detained us for six hours while they searched minutely everything we had brought with us.

The bus to our dormitories was preceded everywhere by more of those men in funny clothes making strange gestures towards us. All the streets were lined with barricades. Soldiers with bayoneted weapons faced us while behind the barricades the Mezitzians stared. Some were curious, others sullen but many were angrily chanting and punching their fists in the air.

Barbed-wire fences surrounded our dormitories. The Mezitzia liaison officers, led by Bishop Davron Vangelis, explained to us that their holy nation was in the grip of war. This was the reason why we had seen so many warships and troops. fionar asked why we were being treated like criminals. Bishop Vangelis apologized for any unintended offence but said that the people were highly religious and Errinundera was notorious as for its godless behaviour. "They believe that Satan has your souls in his iron grip. These arrangements are for your own protection." Later one of the dormitory staff whispered to us that the holy leader of Mezitzia, Archbishop Alexandros XVI, was a dictator and rumoured to be psychotic. "He calls all of us his playthings," she giggled.

Our most popular international player, antarcticad, could not make the trip. It hasn't got into the press yet but his recent collapse is said to be due to an overdose of the banned substance di-enviloid paranoiac acid, usually known as depa. I don't know much about these things so I'm not sure whether it is supposed to improve performance or whether it has only recreational uses. In any case, phudson says that fionar doesn't want him playing until the matter is clarified.

Match day was dreary. The wind was fierce and cold. It was what dip would call lazy, ie it doesn't bother to go around you - it goes straight through you! The team was subdued when it entered the rainy arena. The crowd was quite the opposite. It bayed at us. Even though the masses were kept behind 5-metre high razor wire fences I sensed that our players were afraid. They never got into their stride. Mezitzia are a very good, well organized and robust team. They scored a goal in the first five minutes and another early in the second half. oreadest finally scored our solitary goal in injury time. Frankly, the scoreboard flattered us. Although our mid-fielders moschatuma, handesydek and sandrab were courageous and striker oreadest showed flashes of brilliance, the home side dominated the match.

dip didn't have much of a trip either. During one of the team's practice sessions she was taken on an official tour of the Shrine of the Lord of Infinite Guidance. On the way back the driver of the official limousine lost control of the vehicle and hit a guide railing very heavily on dip's side of the car. My poor, darling wife has quite a bruise on her arm. Afterwards our Mezitzian liaison officers were very kind to her and gave her a gift of an 18th century icon of St Nikodemia. I have to admit it is very pretty.

Keep well, mumsi, and please stay away from those Nazi thugs. I wish you had never loaned them your television that first qualifying match in World Cup 5. I warn you, those guys will cause you nothing but grief.

Missing you, mumsi. Your loving son.

Audioslavia slips up

Audioslavia's qualifying run recieved a knock today as scrappy defencive work cost the 'slaves two goals in the final ten minutes to draw 3-3 with newcomers _AMP. Audioslavia lead from the start with a header from Butler, and an identical header from Dunhill ten minutes later. Going into half-time 2-0 up, Audioslavia relaxed a little too much and the home side pulled a goal back on 51 minutes. The 'slaves restored the two goal lead through a Benson penalty five minutes later, but over time the young 'slave defence tired and succumbed to two well-taken and well-deserved goals in the final minutes after mounting pressure from _AMP.

Audioslavia's manager was upbeat, saying that theye already scored infinite x more goals than in the previous campaign, and are still undefeated. He was quoted as saying something else but well, everythjing just started going blurry and i became more pre-occupied with Jesus flying around nazareth on the back of Sidney Poiter.

In other sports news, Republic of Tha Machine have gained their first point of the competition with a 1-1 draw with VA Industrialised. Their first point seems to have been ignored by the statisticians of The Belmore Family who still have them as having no points :P

Welcome to IBN.

Today in sport. The Busby team in the World Cup has won their first game against Ravenspire.

The result was 4-1 to Busby. This will give people back here at home a bit of encouragement that Busby can go all the way. We had a talk with the captain.

"Well, i think that match is to show what we can really do. That win has given us the encouragement we need to go further, but we do know that the further we go the more harder the teams get. So we will have to train harder than ever before."

Well, they have got the support from everyone here in Busby. We will give you another update as soon as we can.

Have a great day.

"Get Your Act Together," Says Parker

The Bedistan Lions are on their way home after a disappointing away match against The Midnight Armies.

The action began in the 15th minute when midfielder John Burks inadvertantly kicked an opposing player while trying to take the ball from him. Burks was shown the yellow for this, and the TMA player buried his penalty shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Goalkeeper Olivia Bream had no chance, and her team was now down 1-0.

Bedistan retaliated in the 37th minute when star forward Johnny Lewis sent one just over the goalkeeper's head. The ball dropped ever so gracefully into the net, and the game was tied.

At halftime, Coach Parker opted to take Bream out of the game and give one of the lesser used players a chance to play -- in this case, substitute goalkeeper Chuck Mitchell. Mitchell performed well at first, but he let by a rather easy goal in the 65th minute that he should have been able to stop.

TMA managed another goal just four minutes later from a corner kick, making the score 3-1. The Lions had not lost hope yet, though. In the 72nd minute, Burks got one past the keeper to make the score 3-2.

With time running out, the team grew desperate. In the 91st minute, with mere seconds remaining in the game, forward Jeff Whitehurst sent one toward the net that looked sure to go in, but the TMA goalkeeper made a spectacular save in the nick of time to hold on to the win. The Midnight Armies were victorious by a score of 3-2.

"I tell you what, this team has got to get its act together," said Coach Jim Parker after the game. "0-1-1 so far, not a great start. Then again, now that I think about it, we lost our first two games in WC5 qualifying and still managed to get through, albeit just barely. Also, with 14 qualifying games this time instead of 7, we have more chances to come alive. Still, this is a bad habit to get into, especially against an unranked team."

The team is expected to arrive at Columbia International Airport today at 11:30, at which time they will begin preparations for their first home game, against Runaway Moose. Alces Rex has done very well so far, winning both of their first two games, but it remains to be seen whether the Lions' home crowd advantage will break their winning streak.

Final score:
The Midnight Armies 3 (16, 65, 69)
Bedistan 2 (Lewis 37, Burks 72)

The One Red Dot International Team comprising of the newly combined national champions Onippon Samurais FC and Home United Royales FC saw two draws in the first two qualifying matches of World Cup 6 which has recently started.

"This team is new and this is the first time we have used them at a international match. It has produced quite unexpected results in comparison with the first two World Cups which we have entered," said Onippon Samurai's new Head Coach, Alvin Ker.

"It is possible that the merge has strengthened our offense. Previously, we always ended with one or two goals and sometimes even none in at least 50% of our matches. Now we have 3 goals."

"But we have sacrificed our defence unfortunatly. A 2-2 draw against Jurimaxistan was uncalled for by One Red Dot which used to have one of the best defences."

All 3 goals so far has been scored by Samurai's Kuragai MATOMO, who has been with the squad since World Cup 5 as a reserve striker.

Home United Head Coach, David Joel added," The players have been quite demoralised after 2 unsuccessful tries to reach for the Round-of-16. So far in the group matches in the 2 World Cups, we have had 1 draw and 5 losses. Definitely very devastating. But it's a whole new ball game now. We have two draws now, but we hope that in our next match against Ravenspire whom we had fought against in the World Cup qualifiers, we will knock them down.

Tha nation of Mezitzia sees a win and a draw in its first two matches of World Cup 6.

The first game was played against Timway, another newcomer to the world cup. This match was a draw and very well played.

"We would have liked a win seeing that we play a ranked team next, but it still gets us a point." Says Leading goalscorer Zack Stillings, who has already posted three goals in the tournament. "We played well for our first international match, and we really together as a team."

The second game saw them win against #17 ranked Errinundera. This was seen as a great triumph for the unranked team, and the Archbishop went on air to congratulate his players. We hope for further successes in the tournament.

- The highest score i can remember is a 6-1 win by Kingsford in the WC5 qualifiers. With unranked teams at 100, they can be expected to allow a lot of goals, but 10 attacks should help and scores should be lower in the Cup proper with more ranked teams. Though flukes like Ravenspire allowing 4 goals will still happen. For WC7, might we want to think about some way to let teams specialize in defence or offence based on their history, like Ravenspire & TB traditionally allowing very few goals?

- "US eastern time" sounds wrong. It's eastern time in Canada too, dammit!

- Rowdy behaviour by the Hooligan Cheerleaders has knocked out our broadcast feed. The game will be reported on tape-delay. Coach Bi Kikere had this to say: "Their desperate attempts to imtimidate from the sidelines notwithstanding, we have won another glorious victory. Clearly, we did not need to use our entire starting line-up. Who's our next victim?"

That sounds like a great idea to me. Perhaps I or someone else could figure out a way to incorporate that...

Perhaps teams with offensive tendencies (traditionally) could have one or two more attacks for and against them and the traditional defensive sides have one or two fewer attacks for and against. Or we could change values in some of the formulae.

Question: Does anyone happen to have a copy of the tables for World Cup 4? The WC4 pages Spaam had up return 404s now and I'd rather not have to go through every single game...

Is Audioslavia falling apart agaian?

Ranked a dissapointing third in their group behind upstarts Poorvoo and _AMP, they could be in for another short trip to the world cup.

Hey TnUI, I'm going to tune out of this thread for a while, could you (or someone) TG me when qualifying ends? Thanks.

I could just say "EST," but

US EST is 14 hours behind Tokyo and 15 hours behind Oz EST.

So I guess I should say "NA" instead of "US." Here, I'll edit it. We don't want no international incidents. For that, we have a separate forum.

Why have I gotten no telegrams from Kingsford about my results?

I'll RP the friendly with BD later, no time now.

Edit: and the defeat of Christofi, don't want to RP the loss to TMA

What's all the things in the chart stand for?

Ah, thanks much, Brazillico. I've almost got my tally of every team's offensive and defensive record complete and should have it up tomorrow to see if we might be able to try to do something with it.

Timway's national team was decidely displeased with the results of their first two world cup qualifying games. Coach Alphonse Netko had this to say: "I am somewhat disappointed that we could not notch a win in either game. We squandered a two goal lead last night in the second half, and that will not cut it in such a tough grouping - especially against an unranked team. Our defenders must step up their play, as three goals in each game should be more than enough to win. Perhaps a formation change is also in order."

Fans Turn Hostile After World Cup Qualifying Match

Holmes Stadium was totally packed today with enthusiastic fans welcoming home a team that so far had not done particularly well in qualifying with a draw and a loss on the road. Everyone thought the home crowd would boost the team's spirits and lead them to their first win.

The team played "horribly", as one notable sportswriter put it. Alces Rex utterly trashed the home side in a 3-0 shutout. As the game ended, the Lions were loudly booed off the field by what they thought were their supporters.

Coach Jim Parker refused to comment on the game.

The Lions will now head off to Haraki, hoping to reclaim some of the honor they gained in World Cup 5.

Final score:
Bedistan 0
Runaway Moose 3
