The soldiers had their rest, they were re-armed, they marched towards the gold, but they needed to cover their backs, it was a lucky victory, but you never know of course.

The 102nd Colonial Division was stationed near the border, they wouldn't march towards the gold of course, they'd provide cover just in case, and so the 3rd Colonial Division marched, marched and drove, there was gold in them parts...

OOC: Eh, nobody can take sides, you can criticize and such but this is one on one...

Rose, I won't be online for long tonight (dentist appointment in the morning). I also thought, Rose, the final battle should be at the gold mines.

IC:

Seeing that the battle was lost, Newnham decided to retreat with what was left of his forces (some 400 men) and regroup, although he wasn't at all disappointed because of the beating he laid on the Rosians.

"Men, we may have lost that battle...but we accomplished a lot with what we had. We should be proud of ourselves."

This time, however, Newnham was going to fight. Going after the Rosians were the following:

(Secret IC)

15,000 infantrymen
400 M1A Abrams MBT's
150 BMP-3's
25 BitingRealitan Hummers
10 M109 155mm SP Howitzers
10 Paladin 155mm SP Howitzers
10 Centauro Wheeled Tank Destroyers
25 Centauro Reconaissance Anti-Tank Vehicles

OOC: Heh, well you do the first attack, you can catch me marching there.

Newnham ordered his forces to again assume the "V" formation that was so effective against the Rosians. He ordered the MBT's to the front of the line, with everything else staying behind them. As soon as he got to the Rosians, he would unleash a special "surprise" onto them.

Eventually he could see the Rosians in the distance. As the BitingRealitans got closer he ordered his artillery units to get ready for an attack, which would come when the Rosians were in clear sight.

Several minutes later the BitingRealitans caught up with the Rosians. Newnham gave them the order to fire- five rockets (from the Hummers) and one round of amunition came flying from one Howitzer and BMP-3 each. The Rosians wouldn't know what hit them.
The Island of Rose
14-08-2004, 05:30
Three Humvees and 70 Soldiers flew through the air, 5 BMP-3s destroyed, 7 T-90s gone, another 5 Howitzers and 3 SMERCHs destroyed, they were struck. Tiora looked at the situation, luckily she prepared in advance, she would not be caught un-guarded again.

The armor was put up into the front, firing rounds into the opposing armor, she ordered all SMERCHs and Howitzers to fire, and this time they were well aimed. 30 Humvees, each armed with M-Deuces, were sent to cause chaos. She then pulled out her trump card.

She called in the 102nd which was already stationed near the border, they rolled, not marched, towards the BR forces, they surround them, destroying anything that didn't have a Rose in their uniform, fool me one, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

OOC: That's about two Divisions after ya man, I already had mine stationed in the RP, you're going to have to wait a few posts to get backup.

IC:

Newnham saw the Rosians trying to surround them, so he had to think quickly again. He ordered his units to switch the position of the "V", aiming towards the Rosians' weak southern point. Newnham ordered his troops to fire at will, with 25 tanks and 5 Howitzers aimed at the weak point.

The losses? 15 tanks, 5 Howitzers and 2 SMERCHs

OOC: I'm coming from the north man, and what southern weak point?

Half of the 102nd Division was left behind to cover any attacks against them, the rest of the Division, plus the 3rd Division started to attack, they charged, tanks firing at anything that moved, the artillery stayed behind still attacking the V, plus the fresh artillery also attacked the V, back up from the BR forces might come soon, they need to weaken them. The armor charged ahead with the Humvees providing cover, soldiers were charging also, hiding behind the T-90s or being inside the BMP-3s.

Losses: 10 T-90s 7 Howitzers 5 SMERCHs 5 Humvees 100 Soldiers

OOC: I'm coming from the north man, and what southern weak point?

OOC: You're encircling me, so there is a southern weak point- most of your forces are coming from the north so the south is weaker.

IC:

Newnham kept pushing forward at the southern point, pointing another five BMP3's and all 20 of the Centauro Anti-Tank Vehicles there hoping for a break. He called in back-ups, but they weren't there yet.

Losses: 3 BMP-3's, 13 MBT's, two Centauro Anti-Tank Vehicles (OOC: instead of three SMERCHs lost (from my previous post), write it as three Centauro Anti-Tank Vehicles. I never sent any SMERCHs- I made a mistake in my previous post).
The Island of Rose

The Southern point was weakening, but it didn't break yet. The artillery from the 102nd focused on the Armor, the Artillery from the 3rd focused on the opposing artillery. The T-90s still charged, shooting anything that moved. The Humvees still tried to cause chaos in the lines, they could take soldiers but not armor.

Losses: 5 BMP-3s 10 Humvees 5 T-90s 70 Soldiers 1 Howitzer

Newnham kept the attack against the south, seeing how it was weakening. He also noticed that some T-90 movement from the Rosians, so he aimed five more of his BMP-3's to the T-90's, hoping to also break that point in the circle. His reinforcements- some 70 BMP-3's, 2 Howitzers, 3 SMERCHs, 5 BitingRealitan Hummers, and some 1,000 soldiers- arrived, firing as soon as they arrived at the scene and moving to the southern point, as well as three Chinooks which he ordered to keep watch along the periphery.

Losses: 4 BMP-3's, 12 MBT's, and 1 BitingRealitan Hummer, as well as 100 soldiers.

OOC: Can I use Hinds? My Divisions have Hinds ya know.

The artillery blasted away, 1/3 of the T-90s now aimed their guns towards the enemy artillery. The BMP-3s also continued to fire, another 10 Humvees were sent to cause some chaos, but this was in the Northern section.

The South section split in half, regrouping with the Northern section, keep it on one front maybe. The soldiers were aiming their rifles, which were HK G36s armed with 40mm Grenade launchers, towards other enemy soldiers, it was a mess. The Rosians kept getting losses, but it wasn't over yet.

Losses: 5 T-90s, 7 Humvees, 8 BMP-3s, 2 SMERCHs, 250 Soldiers

Progress was going well on the spaceport area and kiwipeso had realised that the northern city under construction needed a buffer zone to avoid being surrounded by it's nearby neighbours.
The harbour was building up a few ports, one for passengers, one for goods and one for spacecraft later on, when the spaceport was built.

Already hundreds of construction crews and thousands of tons of resources were being imported from core city, home of the kiwipeso building industry.

OOC: Just for your reference, "Imperial Regent" is my version of President.

IC:

Office of the Imperial Regent, Falasturian Senatorial Complex, Terila, Falastur

"Sir! The Young orderly burst through the doors into the office of the Imperial Regent, bringing the Regent from his mid-afternoon doze, sitting at his desk. "Sir! The report from the Research station on the unknown continent has come through. You requested I bring it as soon as it arrived." The orderly, dressed in immaculate uniform of a Civil Servant in the Senatorial Complex, briskly handed the report over, almost thrusting it into the face of the Regent, who gave a grunted thanks and ushered him out of the doors again.

Skimming over the text, De Moins idly looked for anything of importance. A new species of orchid may do a great service to the gardening community, but he couldn't care less, himself. The first few pages were filled with formalities - official greetings and proceedures that bored De Moins to the core, but were none-the-less necessary. The Regent suppressed a yawn, flicked over another page, and moved on to the findings of the research station. Finally, around a quarter of an hour later, and just as De Moins prepared to return the report to his desk, where he hoped not to have to look at it again, he spied a line which took his interest. He sat up straight and read the lines carefully.

"...In our research, it appears we are not the first to find this continent. We have made some communications with other settlers in our area, but found little of interest. The continent, now known to be called "Manium", a name of unknown origin, appears to have been widely colonised around the coast, but there is a large area unclaimed by any nation. The land includes much fertile land, both for agriculature and industry, and for the citing of residential districts. While I am by no means an authority on this, I believe this land could be of much use to us, for outward expansion in our quest to locate all of our citizens without crowding them. This land would also be of great strategic value as an international trade centre for us, as a military outpost, for communications relays, and for other purposes besides. It appears to me that we should look to colonise this land as quickly as possible..."

The Regent read it again, and put the paper down on the table with a satisfied sigh. Falastur had been looking for something really great to celebrate, as a symbol of their strength now they had surpassed the 2 billion-citizen barrier. The formation of a new overseas colony may not impress many other national leaders, but generally speaking, citizens are suckers. It would go down a treat, and be something which made sure De Moins' name stayed in the history books....strengthening the Empire, proving it could expand with no blood lost, generally doing something to be remembered for. A statue in the capital of the Colony? Maybe even have the city named after him? And most importantly, Falastur would come out of it better and more powerful than ever.

Racing his hand to his phone, he began to schedule calls to Governmental Ministers, Military Commanders, media reps and other important figures. The sooner Falastur moved into this colonisation phase, the better.

OOC: Basically, this is me starting to expand. If you could have me slowly working my way through the unclaimed sector in-land of my colony, that's what I'm aiming for. Thanks.

The Colonel noted the large clock upon the wall, steadily counting downward.
“Has Berhe’s team installed the laser core?”
“Yes, sir. Initial burn should be substantial.”
“I am not concerned about initial – it is the sustained which makes or breaks this project.”
“Aye, sir.”

Colonel Shamshan barely noted the display of the engineer’s prior naval service; instead, his thoughts ran to his colony, what he had accomplished. Sisu Arshu was now a full research community, self-sustaining with the power afforded by not one but two pebblebed reactors. Trada Vitiri had grown – given, mostly from trade from it’s neighbors, both legal and illicit – and now stood as a city in it’s own right. And Port Karii was on the verge of laying in it’s own shipbuilding facility. He ran through the many small communities which had sprung up – Two Falls, Franklin, Farnham’s Freehold, Sunsetview, too many more to name. Little villages flooded the Vastivan claim – allowed to spread out, the people had spread. Vast tracts of farmland mixed with tended and “tamed” jungle – possible only with the help of native know-how and freighterloads of topsoil and earthworms.

All told, he estimated the permanent colony now numbered over a third of a million people – if you could find them all. Not bad for a start. That they managed to add to colonial income with a steady and growing number of native crafts and artworks, and a number of native crops had entered the Vastivan diet as – if not staples, at least as expected recurrent luxuries. He smiled to himself. If this project came to fruition, perhaps even an election to the Emirate would be his.

“All lights are green, Colonel.” The report shook him back to reality.
“Have all units reported in?”
“Yes, sir. Orange alerts are in place.”
“Very good. Commence primary ignition. Initiate countdown”.

Outside, a series of klaxons began to bellow. Those nearby found shelter – those at a distance watched with interest.

Far away, two sets of switches were turned, cutting primary and auxiliary power from the reactors to anything but the launch site. Enormous UPS batteries began to bleed charge to satisfy colonial need.

“T minus thirty and counting. All personnel report to safe areas. This is not a drill. We are T minus twenty-six to launch.”

“ETL launch system activation in five… four… three…”

Col. Shamshan focused his polarized binoculars at the base of the launch site, mentally following the countdown. Even with the additional lenses, the sudden light leaping from base to booster caught him by surprise.

In an eyeblink, solid blocks of oxygen flipped directly to plasma, forcing unprecedented thrust through the booster jets. The booster – heavy as it was – lept into the air, seemingly balanced on a beam of light.

Almost unnecessarily, a voice stated “We have lift-off.”

“Excellent.”
“T plus five… all systems are go…”

Shamshan listened with half an ear to the reports – all was going perfectly according to plan. He watched as the silvered spear lept towards the heavens…

… and suddenly bent in the middle.

“We have a premature separation attempt…”
The Colonel snapped down his binoculars. “Facts! I want facts!”
“Sir!” a tech nearly swallowed her tongue, “the separation charges on the three o’clock setting have fired prematurely…”
“Why? No, nevermind why…”
“We have loss of trajectory, repeat, we have loss of trajectory. New trajectory being computed….”
“Primary laser core depolarized”.
Of course, there’s nothing to fire at now… He drew his binoculars back, scanned the sky to look for some chance of things suddenly going right… and was instead rewarded with a huge explosion.
“Payload separation achieved.”
ARGH! NO! He watched as the expensive payload – sensors, recorders, black boxes, redundant systems – plunged towards the mountain range. Ironically, the boosters here came on as planned… and what was supposed to be an orbiter became a true “drop ship”.
Even the humor could not cheer him at this point.
“Send a team to the crash site” he ordered unnecessarily.
“Sir! We’ve calculated the new trajectory of the booster.”
“Eh?” He scanned the skies again. The booster had been set to explode after separation, wasn’t it?
“Wasn’t the booster supposed to explode?”
“Yes, sir, once fuel was exhausted…”
“Which it is not. Yet.”
“No, sir. We have calculated the new trajectory.”
“And?”
The tech gulped. “And the booster is headed generally in a true North direction. If fuel consumption and velocity calculations are correct, it will impact in Noviet territory, approximately sixty miles inside their territory.”
The Colonel nodded. “Ok, we will need to get permission to recover the booster wreckage.”
The tech cleared his throat. “Sir? We believe the booster will have used up only between two-thirds and three-quarters of it’s fuel reserves at that point. So when it lands…”
Shamshan’s eyes went wide. “It will look like a ten-megaton bomb… four kilometer wide fireball…”
“There won’t be any radiation…”
“They may not stop to check! Get them on the radio, warn them about the projected impact… how long do we have?”
“At current speeds, the booster will land in about four minutes.”

Due to its proximidity to Raginsheepian territory, the NIRP (Nuclear Immediate Response Protcol) is autmatically engaged. All Alpha silos are opened, Beta silos are readied and computers trace the booster back to its launch site. The missile silo crews stand by their launch terminals ready to launch.

The message was picked up by anyone who was listening, which was a decent amount of people. Shortwave radios, the news networks, government observers and of course the military had all received. The responses of the civilian side were all atypical. The viewers all tuned into the news corporations, the news corporations bombarded Vastivian and Noviet government offices with phone calls while they simultaneously repositioned their commercial satellites. The government offices, bombarded with calls swamped the federal offices in requests, recommendations and they all looked to the military for their next action.

Aboard the NHSS Imperator, outside the waters of First Port, Admiral Dennis Maita reviewed the information as quickly as possible because all first response decisions in the continent of Manium fell to him. Lower ranking officers about him and the admirals of the other carriers, via video uplink, all blasted information or demanded input.
“We have six planes in the air for an immediate response, from the Lucky Dragon and the New Houston they’re patrol planes.”
“The governor is online 3 and wants to speak with someone.”
“I have firing solutions on a good number of Vastivian SAM site and AA craft, cruise missiles are prepped and awaiting your orders sir.”
“NWN is on line six and they want to interview someone.”
“We have a communiqué from the colony this might be a failed launch as they said.”
“Bullshit we have men sitting on the border, they’re obviously the spotters for some ballistic rocket.”
“Gagetown is on high alert, the B-2s are ready to fly and the Abrams are ready to ride, waiting on orders sir.”
“I know have a firing solution on the Vastivian squad too thanks to the Wyvern.”
“Satellite’s confirm its on a Northern Trajectory, it could be a first strike on Gagetown, if that’s the case it would severally limit our ability to strike at them considering the amount of SAM and AA installations they’ve recently built up.”
“See this is a planned invasion they’ve prepared for a counter attack.”
“This could be a missile strike on New Borderton.”
“Unlikely it’d have to turn and its very possible that they could misfire into Hamptonshire territory.” Admiral Maita moved his hand in a swift chop motion and the conversations stopped immediately. The officers looked at him expectantly as he inhaled deeply and furrowed his brow. Breaking into his command voice he began to dictate the Noviet response.
“All six planes are to intercept, see if we can’t shoot this fucker down, it is in our airspace. Keep all acquired solutions hot, I want the missiles push button ready. Tell Gagetown to launch all B-2s and get the entire armored division moving south, if this goes sour I want to be able to roll over the border with bombs falling directly in front of my tanks. You two,” he points to two identically ranked officers, “One of you will talk to NWN the other the governor. Have the canal groups get down to the Vastivian shores, tell them to acquire more firing solutions via sat link and I want the Blade’s Edge Fortress of Poseidon and the Ragnorrak take their place. We’re heading south, have the Legionnaire and the Bear’s claw follow with their groups. Have the Hercules, Lucky Dragon, White Griffin, President, New Houston and Trebuchet launch their squads, I want those F-117Bs and those F-18s in the sky for instant Vastivian incursion BUT THEY ARE TO STAY CLEAR! I don’t want it to be us who fires the first shot but my god will we fire the last. Dismissed!” At that the officers filed out onto the bridge and the screens went idle. On bridges across the continent the Noviet navy was gearing up for what looked like a war.

Less than a minute later the interceptor squad from the NHSS New Houston had the stray booster acquired. The Captain had never seen anything like it before. Streaking across the sky with a trail of fire he couldn’t help compare it to the chariot of Apollo riding high into the sky.
“Captain you are a go to engage. Breakaway after launch we except a decent sized flare up on detonation.” The pilot shook his head, Decent sized flare up my ass this thing is going to be seen from the moon.
“Baker confirmed. Loosing missiles,… now.” Each plane launched two missiles each at the behemoth before breaking and banking. Making a high G one hundred and eighty degree turn the squad activated after burners to make their getaway. Watching on his tactical display as he was crushed into the seat of his F-18 by the force of his acceleration he looked over to the runic pentacle his wife had given him. Adorning his cockpit now as a memento of why he even bothered getting into this flying weapon of war he exhaled partially because of G forces and partially as an attempt to calm his nerves.

With the booster’s giant size, huge heat signature, lack of counter measure and ballistic path the missiles were in an almost optimum environment. Struck starboard side by all six missiles the booster erupted into the expected fire ball.

The fireball could be seen from New Borderton, a second sun in the day time sky, and shortly after the sun had reached its peak the hot expulsion of gasses tore towards the suburbs. Exhausting itself over the mad cross country dash the people in the suburbs manages to get a gassy smelling breeze, though it would be later reported one colonist had a minor allergenic attack to the hydrocarbon based fuel.

The team who’d been sent to investigate the natives however was not so lucky. Watching the rocket launch, split and blast towards them they knew not death was coming. Looking up to the errant booster the team merely wondered as to what those crazy Eskimos were up to, before the missiles launched from the unseen squadron erupted the tanks and ended their lives in a messy flesh searing scene that is not to be recounted.

“Sir? We’ve been actively targeted by…”
“By a whole lot of Noviet weaponry, correct?”
“Yes, sir…”
“What would you do, Lieutenant, if someone dropped a rocket the size of a small building on your territory?” He rubbed his forehead. “All units maintain the same level of alert, no offensive movements.”
An aide appeared with a photo in hand. “Colonel, Noviet tanks are…”
“Headed for our border?” He shook his head. “Lieutenant, please inform her and anyone else who appears of my orders. Then send for senior staff to the ready room. And coffee, lots of coffee.”

Col. Shamshan emerged from the discussion thirty minutes later, still shaking his head.

“Get me the Governor of Reedorrow, whatsisname?”
“Izumi Shigi.”
“Yeah, him.”

“Governor, this is Colonel Shamshan of the Vastivan colony. We thank you for downing that errant launch, but you now have a fire to contend with. We have equipment for dealing with such, but are not going to mobilize anything that might precipitate to a war between us. All our units are staying put until this misunderstanding is made clear between us.”

Aboard the 3rd Colonial Fleet, Fleet Admiral Loki Mesfin al-Din watched the views of Noviet preparedness appear on his board. “Wonderful, just bloody wonderful. It’s not bad enough we’re outnumbered, now I have to sit here with my pants down.”
“Admiral? There’s still the patrols out.”
“Pull them in. We’re not giving them an excuse for a shooting war. Anything come this way, they can go see, but we’re not initiating anything.”

IC:

In New Batavia, Theodore Greenbane and Adriana were enjoying their breakfast. Several months have passed, and Adriana was now engaged to Theodore. She even was using Greenbane as her surname. Ever since Theodore was officially appointed by Emperor Alexander II as Viceroy of Shorehaven, his wealth has grown considerably. His one-floor manor home sported an additional roof, and intricate English gardens grew in the front. Of course, Venus Squirrel Traps have been grown to keep the garden from turning into a rodent salad bar. In the back was a hedgemaze, a pool, and a deck.

A messenger bursted into the dining hall bringing urgent news from Fort Phillip III. He was panting from exhaustion and it seems that he had run from perhaps halfway between New Batavia and the fortress.

"Sir! There's just been an attack on the Fort! It was made by those worthless Augustans!"

Theodore got up from his seat and walked over to the map of Shorehaven. Every tribe has sworn loyalty to Valeria and have been incorporated into the colony with their cities being officially recognized by the colonial government. However, the Augustan Kingdom has refused to give in to demands. Maybe a bombardment of their capital city will help change their minds...

The Crown Fleet soon got word from the Emperor on the order his Viceroy to send 4 battleships to Prima Augusta... the capital city.

The core city engineers were in place with thousands of tons of concrete and huge steel resources. The area was being smoothed out and the soil was undergoing reinforcement with great weights being dropped by crane.

Scientists exploring the jungle were looking into the attributes of the Ganja weed and investigating the reports of pixies appearing near Ganja weed users.

The small city was destined to arise from the centre of the claim, a short commute from the spaceport on the freshly laid ashphalt. At this rate, the construction should be near complete in 2 weeks.

The governor, being at the point where he might shit his pants called up Admiral Maito who knew exactly what questions to expect. After conversing briefly, which was really the Admiral diplomatically ordering the governor’s response the airwaves came alive once again with the official response.

Another head shake. "You must love these people, Allah. So focused on diplomacy and militarism when there is a fire burning out of control." He turned to the lieutenant. "Make the call, get the C-71Fs loaded and ready to fly. Then load a FXA-3 into one of the other C-71s, maybe we can snuff this the hard way.

"Then get that governor back on the line."

Governor, as much as we would enjoy a slow waiting for things to happen, it is not likely a fire such as exists will wait long. As we have been talking, it has expanded to an additional three kilometers square in area burning. As you do not wish an incident or a forest fire of epic proportions, might I suggest a course of action sufficient to remove the threat to your resources this brings?

If it would not be overreaching your hospitality, Vastiva has a flight of sixteen planes standing by with firefighting foam loads. We have a seventeenth being armed with a fuel-air explosive device designed to combat such conditions.

In short, if your planes would be so good as to guide our airstrike to the target, we will do our part to snuff out the problem we have inadvertantly created.

We repeat, these planes are transports and as such are unarmed. Nor will any troops of any sort appear on your borders, unless such becomes necessary and then only at your invitation.

If you would be so good as to inform us as to whether such actions are acceptable or not, we would greatly appreciate directions. Thank you again for your time.

This time the admiral didn’t even let the Governor respond. Coming onto the same frequency he began to belt the co-ordinates of a narrow channel for the Vastivian aircraft to travel in. Coming off the air his XO looked Admiral Maito and spoke slowly,
“You do realize sir that you’ve just given the Vastivians more insight to the inner workings of some of our higher levels of government.” The Admiral’s eyes cut his XO up and his voice iced out,
“I’m not willing to leave this in the hands of a civilian bureaucrat, when I need to have my shit clear or my road paved I’ll call him. Since we don’t need that I’ll handle it.”

On the southern border, other events are in motion. The border itself is nothing more then a wooden fence, painted bright white, set midway along the twenty meter wide cleared area which makes up the borderlands.

The recon mech easily clears the fence and trods into the forest beyond, leaving prints in the wet soil on both sides of the fence.

A few moments go by as it enters the forest at a dull run.

There is a loud click, audible to those on the other side of the fence, immediately followed by a tremendous explosion.

Small bits of what may have once been a mech shower on the far side of the border, still smoking, melted, and burned.

"Roger, teams will be there to pick up scraps. Beta 2 out."

The F-18s closed menacingly on the Vastivian aircraft taking flanking positions so that they’d have decent reaction times should the C-71s make for the deck. With three fighters for every Vastivian plane they made a reverse V about the C-71 formation. Radioing on an open frequency the squad leader spoke to the Vastivians,
“Actually I’d prefer if you didn’t snap any pictures the automatic countermeasures on my baby have been really touchy lately, wouldn’t want you sprayed with hunks of reflective aluminum now would we?” Chuckling he continued on the open air.
“I understand you fellas have a mild problem with arson, but we appreciate the speedy response.” The air went dead for a moment before the same voice came back onto the air.
“CnC wants to know whether I asses you guys as a high threat level upon visual inspection, have any cargo I should know about.” Squad leader chuckled as he brought his plane along side the Vastivian formation, waving as he did.

We have three water bombers coming in, ETA twenty minutes, they might be able to get this thing under control. You guys might want to concentrate your payloads on containment as apposed to extinguishing.” The aquad leader went dead for awhile before coming back on with the terrain report.
“Mostly shale and rock, your booster went down on a fairly organic mountain range. We’re hoping it won’t spread to far east or we’ll have a prairie fire on our hands.”

Roger that Noviet flight. If you nice fighterjocks would stand off and keep away from the updrafts we’d appreciate it. I’m sure you can shoot us down just as effectively from some distance off, but we’re made to deal with these conditions and you’re not, thank you. Flight two, if you wouldn’t mind, put a coat on that mountain range, flight one high and dry and up the middle, flight three on the east. Four, form up with me and stand by in case we need support.

What about me, boss?

Gage, circle up and prepare to put the baby down once we get the blanket ready.

Roger, Gage out.

The diamonds turn gracefully if slowly towards their goals. Flight two arrives at the mountain range first; each pilot shows professionalism and long earned skill as they begin their bombing runs: in turn, rear hatches open and the loader begins the fall of 185 tons of compressed foam. Upon reaching optimum altitude, the cellulose canisters rupture and bluish-green foam expands in clouds to blurp all over the treeline. The next two craft drop a breakline on either side, forming a good thick half-circle of containment around the fire.

DeSoto two to DeSoto leader, I think we got it covered. Two-Four is still heavy.

Roger.

DeSoto three to DeSoto leader, eastern line coated, three-three and three-four still heavy.

Roger. DeSoto three-three, run containment north, three-four run containment south.

Roger.

Roger.

DeSoto one to DeSoto leader, loads dropped. It looks to us like this one will burn out in a box now, we’ve got it striped and held.

Roger. Gage flight, how does it look from up there?

DeSoto leader, it still looks hot down there. Wind conditions may be unpredictable. And I’d rather be safe in conditions like this.

Roger, Gage. All flights, report, free?

DeSoto one, free.

DeSoto two, free.

DeSoto three, free.

Gage flight, drop the baby on your mark, we’ll follow up as cameras indicate. Noviet flights, stay clear and watch the fireworks.

Gage flight, roger.

Far above and near it’s flight ceiling, the lone C-71 performs a near-handstand, dropping a long cylinder out of it’s cargo bay. Instantly, four parachutes deploy and the guidance package begins directing the huge bomb towards the center of the fire zone.

Halfway down, the center parachute releases, and a spew of reddish gas begins to jet out of the cylinder, moving slowly downwards and outwards.

A second parachute drops off, speeding the drop of the bomb and increasing the rate of gas escaping; then the final two and the cylinder plummets the last hundred feet into the ground, it’s penetrator point setting it firmly upright, thick gas still jetting from on top…

… but not for long. In seconds, the blaze catches the reddish gas; there is an immediate ignition, and a blaze a thousand times longer then a jet’s exhaust blows into the sky, a huge gout of flame hurtling towards the heavens.

Physics being what it is, there is an inverted blast wave, sucking air from the flames, snuffing it in many places, drawing the foam walls forwards in a sponging motion to rub out others.

Just as suddenly, the jet flares, and is gone. The effect on the ground is obvious – where there was flame, is now charred wood and burned grass, the smoke still mostly headed towards where the flume was only a short time before.

DeSoto flight four and plane two-four, spread and drop your loads on any embers and don’t spare the canisters. Coordinate in pinwheel. Noviet flight leader, did you enjoy the display? I'd invite you back to the stationhouse for a snort, but I wouldn't want anyone to think you're defecting. So how about after the border is open we invite you over?

Yeah! We can roast marshmallows over an open fire, make smores, roast kippers and cream.

Ewwwww!

Gage flight, I'm so going to kick your tail when we get back...

Meanwhile, hundreds of tons of concrete were being poured over the spaceport area and thousands of personnel were on the second supply fleet which had recently left Deliverance city.

Scientists were looking into the option of making synthetic Ganja because it had been noted to have anti-psychotic proporties, they just wondered why everyone who uses Ganja weed sees pixies.
It has yet to be determined if it was a hallucination or something else.

"Sir? The newest cyphered mail from the homeland."
"Thank you, Corporal. Namaste. And keep me informed about Noviet activity."

Colonel Shamshan drank his coffee black, sweet, hot, and often. It was therefore somewhat odd when the corporal returned to find the Colonel considering the map of Manium – and his coffee sat on the desk, untouched and cold.

“Sir?”
“Corporal, with a penstroke our position here has changed drastically and for the better. Look at this map. Camewot and Cullenus are already allies of a sort. The Noviets, Hammerites, and Nycton you know about.”
“Yes, sir?”
“Now look. Here is the Rosian claim. Over here, we have two claims near us, both Hamptonshire. On the opposite side is Vandalia, the Morathanian claim.”
“Yes, sir…. ?”
Colonel Shamshan considered him for a moment before realization rolled over his expression. “Ah, yes, you do not know and therefore cannot understand. Our beloved Sultan has accepted membership into NATO. As a result, we have three additional allies near us, and more of our border does not have to be so closely monitored for offensive activity.”
He grinned and slapped the corporal on the back. “So, good things are in store for us, no? Things are looking up for a change.”
“Yes, sir, Colonel. Uhm, here are the latest reports from 4th Comm and the SHARD drone over Noviet territory…”
"Ah. Corporal, more coffee. Make it a pot."

Report on the Vastiva Incident

Several asthma sufferers in New Borderton suffered acute symptoms due to the amount of gaseous debris in the air from the fire. With doctor supervision they all pulled through. A medical team in the area of the blast is missing presumed dead, bios attatched at end. The magneticly charged rail line, or magline, was damaged in the mountain area and will need to be repaired. The estimated repair costs err on the high side of two hundred thousand credits. The company as claimed insurance and the insurance company has spoken to us. We’ve granted them permission to seek reparations from any source within the Vastivian government, we will not be getting involved in that issue.

The Vastivians were very helpful after the fact and it can be assumed that the errant booster was truly accidental in nature. A message will be sent to the Vastivian’s asking them for any relevant data on the accident, from recovery or ground control. We will also ask them for the black back recording so we might see for ourselves.

We are recommending standing down in alertness and putting the fleets back in their original assigned positions. Further recommendations include stepping up F-18 patrols on the border and building an armed forces base near the Vastivian border. This situation has shown us the woeful inadequacies of our reaction time to incidents in the south. Since an area of forest in excess of nine kilometres has been cleared in the area it is our final recommendation that you begin building an armed forces base in the area. This will cheapen construction and will serve as a reminder to those stationed there of the dangers that are associated with our colonial endeavors. We will be having the magline rerouted near the base site in the hopes we will be able to entice the families of the soldiers to live there and make permanent homes in this brave new world.

The official communiqué from the congress of Nova Hope to the Vastivian authorities

Congress has come to the following consensus, we need to communicate better. The Noviet Vastivian relationship is a very important one and we believe that it needs to be nurtured to prosper. So on that note we present you with the following points.

- We request any and all information on what we have begun referring to as the millimeters from hell incident. Any telemetry from orbital, ground or even the vessel itself would be appreciated it.
- The specification of the rocket engine and fuel. Failing that we’d like a list of expected health hazards signed by your highest medical officials.
- The specification of the rocket engine and fuel. Failing that we’d like a list of expected environmental hazards and signed by your highest environmental officials.
- Please deliver this encrypted data file our diplomatic entourage in your capital. They will then attempt negotiations on a mutual air space act where one large control tower will be built and staffed by our two nations and all flight paths from any craft inside Vastivian or Noviet airspace in Manium will be logged for quick and easy reference. This would enable us to create one system of regulation for safety standards and the like. This act would also include the frame work for greater commercial intergration, allowing Vastivian airlines access to Noviet colonial markets and vice versa. This would also make for the beginnings of an air defence treaty, where all of our anti aircraft ordinance could be linked and any threats to one of our air spaces would be a threat to both. Under these same guidelines we could come to an agreement that no distressed Vastivian aircraft be turned away from any Noviet airfield and vice versa.
- We do hereby issue an apology for what might be considered a hasty reply on the part of our military, we are very glad this was worked out through diplomatic channels.
- We do hereby thank you for your timely assistance which, arguably, saved us from loosing a good amount of viable woodland.
- We do hereby request an apology for the destruction caused by your behindhand orbital achievement vessel.
- We do hereby request a payment of three million US dollars as a personal apology to the families of the victims of a botanical/medical team that was claimed by millimeters from hell as this works out to be fifty thousand dollars a year for each, six, team member’ s salary for the next ten years.

To: Congress of Nova Hope
From : The Sultan of Vastiva

The Sultan of Vastiva most humbly apologizes for the events which resulted in the loss of Noviet personnel and the incineration of Noviet natural resources. We are most gratified that our assistance aided in the swift removal of this difficulty from your lands.

- We will most gladly share any and all information about the project once under the aegis of TAPRES. This will include all specifications. Please understand our reticence, we believe this will be the delay of only a few weeks. We can assure you, due to the nature of our fuel, there will be no long term health effects.

- Your encrypted data has been delivered and there has been no attempt to “peek”.

- Given the size of the lands claimed by either side, perhaps it would be of greater advantage to run fiber optic lines connecting our various air traffic control areas, giving a better overview of the whole? Beyond that consideration, we would most gladly begin such negotiations.

- A sum total of six million USD has been wired for payment to the families of the victims of this accident.

Namaste,

Sinjin Lefkowitz al-Din, Sultan of Vastiva

Magline Operational Again

After a short service interruption the magline between the tri-city area and New Borderton has been reopened. After the milimetres from hell incident the main connection between the colonies was severed. The Transdes Corporation, with a generous government subsidy, had the line working within two days of loss of service. Rather than trying to salvage any of the charred remnants of the old magline a new one was put in place with a stop at the site of a new federal construction project, AFB Jo’Hong. The new station will slow the trip time about an hour for the time lost decelerating, disembarking and embarking, and accelerating. When asked if this was going to be a large problem transit authorities were dismissive of the question, the stop would allow them to restock the canteen car making for a more pleasurable trip. With the knew stop in mind residents should be advised that the trip from Port Hokkaido to New Borderton with the stop at Jo’Hong now takes five and a half hours. The new departure times from Port Hokkaido and New Borderton are as follows.

Five City Area?

Governor Izumi Shigi altered state legislature today to officially recognize the settlements of Thutmose and Manchur City meaning the tri-city area now has five cities, from north to south, De Trato City, Thutmose, Port Hokkaido, Manchur City and Beeton. Each no more than two hundred people these are tenth and eleventh, respectively, state recognized settlements and as such the highway and or magline will be extended to them. When asked what his motivation for recognizing such small fishing villages when larger communities existed Shigi had this to say.
“I hope that one day we have a great coastal city spanning the entire seven hundred kilometres. The city will be a shining beacon for our state that will be economically powerful, culturally diverse and ecologically sound.” When asked what industry he’d try catering to for ecological preservation he declined comment.

Outdoor Communion Ends in Uproar

Parishioner’s were shocked yesterday when in the middle of their outdoor confirmation ceremony several of the children, apparently over come with emotion, began to cry large tears of blood. Most of the children have declined to be named on the advice of their parents. A young Tommy Reeve however declined that right and had this to say after a trip to the hospital.
“The doctors say I have what’s going around, it this flu thing.” The doctors couldn’t comment because of confidentiality clauses but Tommy’s pastor had this to say.
“I don’t care what those doctors have to say, this was the work of god. I mean Mary mother in heaven do they need to get the stigmata for you to believe?” The children are all home now, bedridden and several other congregation members have reported similliar symptoms. [to be continued next issue]

“How did they get a hold of this? We were so careful!”
“Well sir it would appear that the Vastivian’s intercepted our message and when they transmitted it back to their base camp the news outlet picked it up.” The governor was pacing furiously. He didn’t know what to do about this now. His best efforts had turned up no cure, the disease had now infected almost everyone in the five city area, and it was only a matter of time before the cities were giant morgues, worse than all of that though was the fact that the feds might be getting involved.
“How long do we have until the symptoms become to big to deny or ignore?”
“Approximately two days sir.”

Are we in the middle of an epidemic?

Intercepted government transmissions have lead this newspaper to believe that the recent rash of ‘the flu’ really a new kind of virus that is sweeping the colony. While the government denies it a medical official, who shall remain nameless, has confirmed the reports saying that this is not bacterial but viral.

We here at the Colonial Times attempted to contact everyone we could in the state government but none would return our calls. It is the recommendation of this humble reporter that you contact your member of parliament so that we can get the federal government to sort out what appears to be wanton corruption in the governor’s office.

It only took a few hours, the magline was key in facilitating it, but the governor had another team out and headed towards the native village, this time in vehicles, they’d find out if the natives were immune or kill everyone trying.

It was early morning when the Hummer set out from Jo’Hong. A military Hummer to be sure but this was not a military mission. Unsanctioned and off the books the team was, unofficially, lead by Doctor Richard (Red) Revere to go out to the native village and test them for the Ebola variant. Red knew his orders well, and was kosher with them. Knowing what they might have to do would make many a man sick with himself but Red sat in the back of the Hummer thinking to himself how best to accomplish his goals. Once a reputable man of science the Red was dressed down by the Noviet Supreme Court for his experiments on children, these experiments had caused physiological deformities in several cases. He’d felt that children, with their weaker immune systems made better subjects as they were less likely to reject his retroviruses. He’d argued to the nation’s judicial system that if we allowed children to make their own decisions based on their ability to pass the nation’s testing standards then they were fit to make the decisions on whether to be medical test subjects. The case would’ve set a precedent in law contrary to everything that they Noviets had built for the last two hundred years when it was discovered that the oldest test subject, a child of fifteen, had cheated on his qualifications testing, meaning he wasn’t eligible to make those decisions yet. Reneging the other charges the court prosecuted him to the full extent based on the merit of this one victim.

Years later Red was here in the new world were his skills were needed and his past overlooked. Although he had to wonder, with the expedition’s gray nature perhaps his past was a big consideration. His thoughts were interrupted as the anthropologist of the group began to chatter excitedly. Pushing the high pitched voice of the bookworm from his mind he pulled the range finder lenses to his eyes and scanned the horizon. Ahead of them lay a semi-permanent settlement of some sort. At the base of the mountain range it lay some three kilometres from the Vastivian border. Checking his PDA map he saw that the Hamptonshire border was also only some three hundred kilometres over the mountain range to the west. Picking up his wide brimmed cowboy hat he pulled the front of it down over his eyes, to shield his eyes from the high sun. The good doctor could already see the natives were gathering to gawk at the dust storm the Hummer was kicking as it raced towards them. This will be interesting to boot.

Side note, Nova Hope, thanks for the scale, and, boy, am I surprised at how big I've made this continent. It's probably triple the size of Earth.

Anyway, the map has been updated. What I've done is that everyone who's requested a new claim will get seven times the allowable limit because I've been gone for seven days, within reason. I've tried to make sure that everyone still has a chance to expand in later updates, so if your claim isn't exactly what you'd envisioned, that's probably why.

IC: it had been almost 14 years since the energy had started to spread. 10% of the population had been killed by the energy, 70% had been transferred aboard colonization ships and sent to other colonies, the rest was relocated to the two remaining cities, Yrax(was renamed to Zalrium and became the new capital) and Zyraz. The other cities had been either abounded or destroyed by the "energy". Though the "energy" had been contained and removed from the colony, the outcome was terrible, all the land that the "energy" had touched was dead... nothing could grow or live on that land for a long time.

Oh really? Sorry I did miss it. Wow.. that means my claim here is the largest one I have. So maybe this can just be considered a different planet altogether than.

Also I didn't need to use the information to bring in others to here, but rather use this place as a quicker medium in which I can transport troops/ships/aircraft to other places. The engineers had done a wonderful job with the parks and greenbelt in spaceport city, some might say they just put paths through existing jungle and built around what they could not demolish, while others commented that Ganja weed patchs had been preserved for future use.

"Heat?"
"Yes, Colonel. Apparently the outer coat was not completed properly, or the energy levels were higher then we initially considered."
Colonel Shamshan growled. "Berhe, I am not used to failure."
To his credit, the little man did not move. "Nor am I, Colonel. Before our second launch, I wish to make an adjustment to the design..."

...plans are unrolled, there is much discussion...

"You do realize this change will put us nearly four months behind schedule?"
"Yes, Colonel. But I believe the new design will have radical reprocussions for all our later ballistic designs, particularly with this launch system."
The Colonel rested his chin on his hand a minute. "And the cost?"
"We will be an additional 25% over budget by initial projections, but perhaps this can be cut to 12.5%. That will mean a redesign and some... allowances from your office."
Before the Colonel could answer, he added "It could even mean a substantial profit from the project, if my calculations are correct."

The hummer pulled into the village with inquisitive natives about. Red had read the profile. These natives were originally on the Vastivian side of the border but the chief had been usurped after the Vastivian show of force. Migrating north to avoid the Vastivian harassment for recruitment into the colonial experience they simple picked up and moved here. The colonial government had ignored them because they honestly where not sure what to do with them yet. As of yet the natives hadn’t bothered with the Noviets but that might’ve simply been because their neighbors where a bigger threat. Red cleared his head of all the government supposition and assumptions. He wasn’t here to study that he was here to see if these people were infected with the Ebola variant.

When the hummer stopped in front of the Chief’s hut he was already standing there with, what the chirping bookworm spouted to be, the village shaman. Stepping from the elevated hummer by the runners Red smiled at the chief, and before he could say anything the shaman spoke up.
“We don’t want to join you guys we’re quite happy right here.” The shaman looked exasperated, as if that phrase was a well practiced one. His german was pretty good for someone who’d probably never seen a German text book. Red let out a guttural laugh at that one.
“Well that’s good because I’m not asking.” The shaman spoke some words in what Red assumed to be the local dialect to the chief. Before they could continue the anthropologist spoke in broken English.
“How did you learn to speak like us?” Red rolled his eyes at the bookworm’s poor showing. This is the guy who is supposed to learn native? Yeah right.
“Vastiva men came, they talk a lot, I am the wisest in the tribe. The chief asks what you are here for if not knee bend polite speak.” Red laughed again.
“Why to trade and learn good sir.” Striding purposefully back to the jeep he brought out the case he had packed for this purpose. Opening it the shined rocks immediately caught the sun and splashed light into the faces of all present. Mostly shaved glass and crystal the case also contained a good number of precious stones. Failing that it also held the old standby, beads. Red smiled at the response the natives gave. God, here we are centuries after the age of colonization and there are still people who are impressed with baubles. This entire case can’t be worth more than a couple hundred dollars.

It took some convincing and trading but one case of baubles, a ballpoint pen and a rangefinder later the team had a place to stay in the village. Red laughed at this. He was amazed at how easy it was to get along with these people. He’d sent the hummer back for supplies and he’d began setting up his lab as the bookworm went about studying ‘these fascinating peoples’.

A couple of S-100 cargo planes arrived on Vastivan soil with the promised engineers, scientists, and businessmen, as well as the necessary camp and cargo supplies.

Several additional S-100 cargo planes will be arriving in several weeks with supplies to start up a permament small town and infrastructure for the joint Sharinan and Vastivan Space Venture.

OOC:

Where in Vastivan soil in the new continent would you like to set up the Space Venture base?

Also, I might be sending tourists and such.

Colonel Shamshan himself met the Sharinan delegation. "Welcome to Sisu Arshu, ladies and gentlemen. We have your rooms available."
"Rooms?" The Sharinan looked confused.
"Yes, rooms. Or rather, a few suites in one of our hotels. Sisu Arshu is not the largest of our cities, but it will do nicely. Once you are settled, we will go over to the VAA base nearer the mountains."

Even at this distance, the huge launch gantry can be seen starkly against the mountains.

The Colonel looks at the small mountain of supplies. "If you wish, a tract of ten acres can be granted just south of Sisu Arshu, though it will take some time to lay power lines and roads to the area. For the meantime, our base has most of what you will need, and much land around it to expand into and through. If you have requirements, they will be seen to. We wish you to have the best facilities available, and swiftly - though please accept our apologies, we are working on repairs and preparations for our second attempt, and these will have to take priority. Perhaps a few of your scientists would like to have a look at our progress? And your business people are free to look around here and Port Karii. We would appreciate some views on how to increase tourism to that area, currently it is mostly port and naval base."
He smiles. "Your pardon again. On behalf of His Magnificence, the Sultan of Vastiva, I welcome you to the Vastivan colony on Manium."
"Doesn't it have a name?"
The Colonel shrugged. "When it is named, it shall be called Sisu Arshu, but for now only the colonial capital wears that name. But, come, you must be tired from your long flight, let us move to your rooms, where I will see personally that you are well-fed. And perhaps more questions can be answered at that time."

“Shut the hell up I’ve been trying to react this sample for go knows how long but your voice his grating on my nerves, my nerves control how steady I am. I’ve already contaminated one sample, now shut up.” The bookworm looked hurt, gathering up his notes he turned his nose up at Red and went out to mingle with his ‘fascinating’ natives. Red turned back to the Petri dish he was trying to seed with the dormant samples of the virus he had brought. He’d take cell samples, blood samples, hair samples and stool samples, anything that might show him some new angle. The hummer wasn’t back yet and the natives didn’t co-operate unless given something, he was running out of baubles.

The Nation of Harlesburg was a young nation and so was ever so keen to expand the territories under the control of said nation and it looked like this was the best oppurtunity to do so.
The high command of Harlesburg had looked at the new continet and thought yes a perfect start to a brave new world. So a small fleet was sent out consisting of 20,000 settlers and 1 Regiment of light foot infantry to protect the colonists more reinforcements would be sent later.

As Major Johnson looked out at the scenerary that was folding out around him he thought what a disaster from what he had been told this continent had freshly risen from the sea but nothing was fresh about this stench he could smell it and they were 200 meters away albiet going into the wind but none the less it would be a task that he would be willing to take on and conquer as he had been taught from a young age.

Colonel Shamshan stood in the command bunker again. This time, a small Sharinan delegation accompanied them, to view the launch.

“Gentlemen, I must warn you, our launch method and fuel source are still experimental. Given the… results of our first launch, we have informed our Noviet neighbors of this launch schedule. We have also moved two Longbow mobile SAM launchers to relatively near position, in case anything unforetold happens. Lieutenant Capistri will see to any of your needs. Dr Berhe?”

The older balding man nodded, straightened what little hair he had left and adjusted his glasses. “Due to the expense of this venture, and the necessity of our changing certain design specifications of this mission, this will be a robotic mission, intended to orbit the planet twice then attempting an automatic landing in the seas to the East of our position. These calculations have been checked and rechecked, and we have fleets to then north and south as well, just in case.”

The unasked question of what if something else goes wrong hovers, unspoken.

“How much thrust do your engines produce?”

Dr Berhe smiled. “We have one central propulsion unit, designed to carry the orbiter into orbit. At full burn, it will produce just over 83 million pounds of thrust.”

The Sharinan scientists looked back and forth at each other. “That is a full order of magnitude greater then a Saturn V?!?”

Dr Berhe smiled. “Yes, it is.” He eyed the countdown. “Gentlemen, if you would please proceed to the viewing lounge, we are in our final moments. Drinks will be served.”

Colonel Shamshan didn’t wait for the room to be cleared. “Commence primary ignition sequence. Initiate countdown. Have all units reported in?”

“Yes, Colonel. Orange alerts are in place, all boards are green. We have a go.”
“Excellent.”

Col. Shamshan focused his polarized binoculars at the top of the launch vehicle, remembering his shock at the last launch.

“One… ignition.”

Once again the Vastivan Space Administration’s vehicle leapt off the launch pad like a bottle rocket, leaving behind a cloud of flames and heat.

“We have lift-off.”
“Good. Keep the Noviets informed of progress.”
“Yes, sir, but that is rather redundant. 4th Comm reports several active Noviet trackings of our vehicle.”
“After last time, I’m not surprised.”

“T plus six minutes. Vehicle at 18,312 mph, preparing for orbiter separation.”
“What is the condition of the launch vehicle?”
A swift check followed. “Nominal to profile.”
“Excellent. Inform recovery fleet to prepare for operations.”
“Yes, sir. Separation countdown, twenty seconds, mark.”
“Mark.”
“Fleet replies, vehicle on scope, ballistic trajectory computed.”
Fiyaad allowed himself a quick prayer. “Countdown on ten.”
“Ten… nine… eight… seven… six… five… four… three… two… one…”

High above, the immense silver tower of the launch vehicle suddenly burned out. A series of explosions separated the vehicle from the capsule, and the latter – freed of the weight of the vehicle – accelerated into orbit.

“Sir, we have separation.”
“Secondary boosters fired, vehicle is beginning ballistic descent.”
“Laser cores exhausted, board is red, shut down in progress.”
“Orbiter is on course, on speed, on projections. At current progress, it will be gaining orbit at E +250 miles within three minutes.”
“Thermal venting procedures show green, awaiting orbital achievement.”
“Board shows orbiter at six gees acceleration, shedding delta vee, orbital velocity and vectors in ninety seconds.”
“Sir? Recovery fleet reports vehicle is within expected parameters, chutes deployed normally. They expect recovery within thirty minutes.”

Colonel Fiyaad Shamshan let out a long sigh of relief.

Yesterday morning, construction workers began construction of a new car manufacturing plant. This new plant is said to be the next gernation of cars, called Levitones. The company expects to produce hover capable cars that are highly effective for high speed travel with good safety included. More news to come on this topic tomorrow when we have our interview with the CEO of LeviFro, Inc.

Capital Building of Sanctumer

Sitting in his office, Grim asks for his head weapons engineer to come to his office. When he enters, grim asks him about the new building.

"How is construction going on the new 'car manufacturing plant'?" asks Grim.
Roger Moy replies, "The construction is going good, the press also thinks it really is a car manufacturing plant. Good cover for a military weapons development building might I add." Moy takes a sip of green tea.
"Well thank you Moy, I thought it was good to, or else I wouldn't have thought of it," Grim chuckles, "couldn't think of anything else that would have been as big as this new building, so thats the first thing that came to mind. Well I should let you get back to work on the design of the cannon, it'll need to be finished by the time the building is completly ready so we can start immediatly building it and running tests," he takes a sip of his coffee, "oh one more thing Moy, you really should drink coffee in the mornings, it really helps you wake up instead of that tea crap." Moy replies to the statement "Well, it helps me think better, I may not neccessarily be awake, but I do think." Moy exits the room talking to himself about the formulas required and the power requirements for the weapon. Grim thinks to himself "Man, I sure hope this project goes well and the press doesnt find out."

OOC: This true nature of the building is hidden from the public so as not to create any panic of a military building being built right in the middle of the capital city where many citizens live.

The natives do in fact seem to be resistant to the infection. Several attempts to infect the cell samples have failed and I’ve surmised that they must posses a natural immunity, as the Europeans had to the Spanish influenza these natives must hold some antibody to combat the Ebola variant.

With this conclusion in mind I have infected several test subjects. If they do in fact have a true immunity I should see some mild evidence of symptoms that will be overcome. The anthropologist voiced moral concerns when he learned that I had infected them with the virus but I see little reason to pay his warnings heed, he may have to disappear later.

The attached file is the cell growth of both the virus and the native tissues. The evidence seems to prove that while they are not victims they are in fact carriers, I will have to query the database when the hummer gets back with the satellite uplink, I’m curious to see who Typhoid Mary was, because someone had to have been to close contact with the natives to contract the disease in the first place.

Shadow Projects Research Building

Moy is sitting in his office, drawing up the finished plans of the new weapon. "Let's see, after it's built it will require much power. How will we get this much power to one building? Ahhh... perfect," Moy finishes the design and immediatley sends it out so all materials can start being sent to the new factory.

Few days later...

LeviFro, Inc. Factory

Lead project developer Fran Roy is now overlooking all workers to make sure the project is finished within the time limit - 1 month. He wonders how they expect to finish such an immense project in such a short time. But he does know that when Moy works with the project, it usually does get finished on time. After checking in on the workers, Roy goes to power maintenance for the colony and checks to see that their work on setting up a system to route all power plants to the factory is going well. "Man, how are you guys gonna route that much power to one line without surging out the plants?" the lead technician replies while still working, "Simple, we put a very very large surge protector on our plants and all will be fine... just don't worry about it, our power lines are high power capacity there is no chance that we will surge our plants. So please leave now so can get back to work," he finishes saying as he goes into the large power control compartment below the main control room.

Log Entry Day 18

The hummer is back now and not a day too soon, the natives are starting to be unnerved by my tissue collecting. Today one of the beta males of the tribe accused me of sorcery. The bookworm proved to me worth the fuel it took to bring him out here at least as he, now fluent in their tongue, managed to calm the residents.

On the scientific side of things I’ve managed to get the virus to take to the cell cultures, only to shrivel up and starve, for what ever reason the native cells seem to contain a protein substance from which the virus is repelled. The results are not indicative of an antibody but I will test for them anyway. It is possible that for what ever reason this virus arisen as a designer virus, not targeting this sub-species of humanity. I’ll do some more lab tests but with the reports coming in from the HQ it seems the virus has surpassed epidemic levels and is on the verge of being a plague. It’s unlikely that the governor will be able to keep this from boiling over for too long. With this in mind I’ve made the decision to pick up the pace of my research. It will be concentrated to laboratory work for now but,…

“Live fire sequence A completed. Lasers in cooling sequence.”
“Well, Fiyaad, what did you think?”
The Colonel scratched his chin. “We already knew the LMS version of MTHAL was potent.”

He eyed what had been an eight inch thick I-beam of titanium, charred spiderwebs of carbonized laser-reflective paint standing out eerily against the melted halves.

“What power setting was this on, Berhe?”
“Two hundred kilowatts.”
“And maximum?”
“We believe we can achieve up to two hundred and fifty megawatts, non-sustained. The AS firing sequence has been rated to one hundred megawatts, sustainable to six minutes before cooling is required. In a rotational firing pattern, this could be maintained theoretically for up to twenty minutes.”

“Theoretically.”
A head-bob nod. “We are continuing testing, the better to perceive if our theories are in line with what reality allows. You do realize, these weapons will change the face of warfare.”
“Certainly. But only to an extent. The power requirements are immense – while the results are worthwhile, they could also be achieved more efficiently with a sheave of missiles.” He drank from his ever-present mug of coffee. “Most certainly this will not be an indirect fire weapon. However, defensively…”
“If our systems can hold as many targets as the enemy can throw, we can avoid being hit, which turns the tables in our favor.”
“And that will be the next hurdle.” He straightened. “Good work here, Berhe. Continue with firing sequence B. Then I will see about getting you some better targets.”

It is always hard to gauge what people mean when you are just reading words instead of being face to face with them. Its the one thing that the internet and forums like this cannot due. They cannot tell you the subtext of what people are saying.

Two tips for you.

Number one. Use Capital letters and make sure that your grammer, spelling and word order are correct before you post even OOCly. Alot of people on NS look at a post like that and think that you are a stupid n00b. Write well, spell well, and have a good storyline and people will respect you. If you have to write your posts on a word processor so you can use spell and grammar check.

Number two. You have to be careful about what you say. If I wasn't just full of hot air I could have attacked you. Granted it was for OOC reasons but people can always find a way to turn that into an IC reason. If I was more warlike or more hostile than I was it could have turned into a nuclear holocaust for your country. So my advice to you would be to tread lightly around nations larger than you. DON'T PISS THEM OFF or you could become a pile of molten radioactive slag.

Anyway. I will be making an IC governors report for Vandalia by Wednesday. I have been very busy lately.

OOC: You better take some Grammer lessons I could barely read that. USE CAPITAL LETTERS AT THE BEGINNING OF SENTENCES.

OOC does mean out of character and IC does mean in character.

As for the rest. If you act like Hataria you will be hated by most of NS most would either ignore you or flame you or report you to the Mods for GODMODding. As for the nukes you have said yourself that they are non-existant so in other words they are GODMOD which is against the laws of RP. And anyway if you did try and nuke me you must remember nukes are not indestructable. I have a very efficient SDI and Anti-Ballistic Missle System which would probably find and destroy most of the nukes and if you just go and nuke me at the first sign of war then most people will say that you RP like crap and will flame you and ignore you. Again I must reiterate just stop argueing right now. Don't piss people off. I know people like Cam III or AMF who, upon seeing a person like you, would attack first ask questions later. Let me remind you also most of the people who hate newbs and n00bs are billion plus nations. So watch out.

The high command of Harlesburg had looked at the new continet and now realised that it was indeed over crowded thesmall fleet that was sent out consisting of 20,000 settlers and 1 Regiment of light foot infantry was now to turn around and depart this land after four weeks at sea.

The Kingdom of New Shiron begins its efforts to establish a colony on the supercontinent of Manium....this colony, to be known as New Kern, will be considered the national soveriegn territory of the Kingdom for all purposes

(it will be somewhere that isnt claimed yet, assuming that is still possible)

Stage 1
Survey and mapping work conducted by government and university personnel, along with experts from the mining, agricultural and fishing industries. Small military escort, primarily to protect against any unusual wildlife. Support from a small fleet of ships, primarily freighters, one tanker, a few amphibious landing ships and a container ship converted into a provesional helicopter carrier. A destroyer group (1 Aegis, 2 ASW ships) plus a couple of SSNs for escort, and a Submarine support ship (with DSRVs) to support inshore sea bed mapping and similiar work

expected time frame, about a year total.... staking out a claim to an area about the size of the Netherlands or South Carolina in area, primary desirable traits are some raw materials (ores), useful fisheries, and northern temperate climate (like something around the Pacific Northwest or Alaskan islands)

Stage 2
Military engineers are sent to build a provesional port (suitable to handle small craft and barges), and to build a airfield capable of handling military transport aircraft. Also, a permanent base area is constructed to handle permanent scientific and planning staff. Should be completed during the spring and summer of the second year

Stage 3
Civilian contractors, specifically large construction firms, are given the contracts to build a larger port and airport capable of handling conventional shipping and civilian aircraft. A Civilian governor is appointed, with staff, to handle government, and land is allocated and select portions set aside for wilderness preserves, and township sites, mining claims and farm plots are offered up for sale. Infrastructure such as roads and small airports are aided as needed, with railroads added when practical (probably for mining companies to send ores to market at least at first) This process will take a number of years.

Military garrisons are relatively small at first... just a primarily combat support and support troops like engineers, medical units, mapping units and the like, with additional support units added as needed, and a single regiment of the Royal Guard (air assault infantry), and units rotated from home every month from the Air National Guard. As population grows, National Guard, Air National Guard and Coast Guard units are raised from the local population.

As population grows, the colony will first become a territory, with local self government, and then as it grows further, it will be considered just another provience of New Shiron, with parlimentary representation just like everybody else. Like all proviences though, the governor is appointed by the crown and approved by the Parliament.

OOC: First of all, I'm sorry I haven't updated in a while- University was busier than I thought.

Anyway, to address a few things:

1) The continent is essentially closed to any new claims, unless someone transfers their existing claims to another nation in whatever way possible. I'll fit in Harlesburg and New Shiron but after that, anyone wishing to claim land needs to contact someone within the continent first. It's been virtually closed for a while now.

2) Since it's been almost a month since I last came here, the "allowable territorial gain" would be astronomical and very unfair. So what I've decided is that, with regards to the rest of the territory, I want all of you to work out amongst each other what areas of the remaining land that you want. This should cover all the gains a nation could make in a RL month.

3) There IS a region for puppets- "Manium". TG me (the "RomeW" account) to get the password for it.

I'll update the map sometime this weekend.

Kiwipeso had sent a great fleet of workers, engineers and colonists over to it's spaceport in recent days and was expecting their arrival shortly at the great harbour.
Many colonists had heard about the Ganja Weed experience and were dying to play "chase the Ganja Weed pixie". It was also rumored to have anti-psychotic effects and this would help the stressed out colonialists.

It was widely accepted that the Ganja Weed was most potent in the northern district which had yet to be fully utilised for harvest. However, the colonialists were determined to make their way there and as far north as Ganja Weed grew.

The nation was prepared to offer space trips for 1 000G¢, space hotel stays at 2 500G¢ per night and ordinary spacecraft hire from 50 000G¢ per day.
There was also a rumor of special mission hire from 250 000G¢ per day involving scientific, satellite or even space warfare operations.

The Hamptonian Colonies, overtime, had split into two seperate and distinct entities. In the north was the Protectorate of McClellen, a democratic government making its way in the world. It had been silent for quite some time, but its people were finally discovering who they were and that they have a destiny seperate from that of Hamptonshire. It's population of 379 million are pushing for an open voice.

The two southern colonies, however, remain directly under the control of Hamptonshire. The Southern Military Colonies, as they have become known, are unusual in the history of Hamptonian colonization. They are not governed directly by the Interior Ministry, the Grand Duke, or the Royal Congress; the SMC is governed directly by the Defense Ministry. While occupied by tens, and perhaps, hundreds of thousands of military personnel, the SMC only has a civilian population of less than 5 million.

Greetings fellow people of Manium, for many years McClellen and the Southern Military Colonies of Hamptonshire have been silent on the continental scene. Now that changes, at midnight tonight the National Assembly of McClellen formally declared its full independence from the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire.

We will remain a part of the Hamptonian League and we will continue to cooperate closely with Hamptonshire and the SMC, but from now on we will chart our own course. We hope to have open and peaceful relations with all peoples and governments of Manium, but make no mistake we can stand on our own. We may not be under the full protection of Hamptonshire, but as a member of the Hamptonian League and as a nation of 379 million citizens we can defend ourselves aganist those that may seek to harm us.

Report of Survey of Bennetone Colony area

After initial recon overflights reported no sign of radio or any other electronic signals, ground recon teams drawn from the Imperial Scouts and New Kern National Guard were sent in by helicopter.

What was found was a catastrophe. Whole camps where found, essentially deserted except for large grave yards (and mass graves). The few living survivors, which on final count number about 13,000 from nearly 100 various camps, sites and outposts, are all that remain of over 200,000 settlers and troops sent to this land.

For all apparent purposes, they were abandoned. Supplies such as fuel and batteries ran out first, followed by medical supplies and then food. Now foraging and hunting did keep many alive for a long time, but apparently, many of the garrisons so oppressed the colonists that in many cases there was civil war and slaughter, with usually only a few of one side or the other surviving.

Another serious problem was the outbreak of Hatfields Disease, a serious disease of the respitory system that appears to be endemic to much of this region of the continent. Although containable with antibiotics (although large doses are required) and survivable with care (once caught, the patient is forever immune) the hapless colonists and soldiers without medical supplies from home died by the tens of thousands.

Everywhere our teams arrived, they were greeted as saviors.

This colony has failed and it would appear that the land is now available for settlement by our people. The locals are mostly requesting transportation to civilization and I request that this be granted them.

Respectively, Major Ken Farrel, Imperial Guard

From: Imperial Colonial office, Dominion of New Kern
To: All those interested

The Dominion of New Kern now claims the southern half of the former colony of Benettone and allocation of land grants will commence after a formal survey is conducted. Bids for the construction of infrastructure improvements are now being accepted.

From New Regional Command Headquarters
To Commander in Chief Imperial Forces New Kern

At once send light forces using all possible means to formerly secure all townsites, major river crossings, airfields, and port facilities (that remain or their former sites). Engineer forces are to begin at once constructing hard surface roads connecting border areas of New Kern with whatever road structure can be found.

In addition, forward airfields suitable for tactical aircraft and STOL transports as well as rotary wing aircraft are to established as soon as possible.

From the Dominion of New Kern
To the nation of Moranthania and all other interested parties

The Benettone Colony has been abandoned, along with the people they sent here. Survivors are being cared for by this Dominion and foreign observers are welcome to verify that we are being truthful in this matter.

The Dominion of New Kern hereby claims the southern half of this former colony by right of salvage and occupation.

Perhaps it should be directly stated that we shall continue to respect each others borders and to involve ourselves in a free trade pact?

Defense agreements can be more fully discussed at a later time, though we will of course honor our agreement of early warning of any unknown aircraft or naval vessel which happens to appear within our notice.

Namaste,
Colonel Fiyaad Shamshan

If aimed partialy at me because you have the naval base i dont need to worry about you entering "my" waters so much but fly overs by aircraft would be offensive.

OOC: Guys, as apparently he's dropped out, might I suggest tying the dead colony in with Nova Hope's epidemic idea? It would make the failure of the colony more "realistic" and add some more action to this entire thread.

If you're both amicable to it (and I do hope you are) please TG him and inform him of your intentions - he does have a "what happens" figured out, just so neither of you start a "and then it was miraculously cured" post and step on him. New Kern II, this would mean your initial "it's contained" bit would be in error - but then again, this is completely realistic, as there is no reason there could not be multiple epidemics going on in a failed colony, and your people just failed to realize the "major reason".

Oh yes - and NATO being good doesn't mean we don't look out for our own interests. *snirk*

OOC: Well, as long as the epidemic only affects those colonies that want to be affected I'll be okay with it. I don't want a continent-wide epidemic that forces everyone to be affected by it.

OOC: Ok, I know Hammerite Sanctur is active - he's in school, but he shows up now and again. So Vastiva is going to protect his claims in the meantime.

As such, if Spankstonia doesn't kick it into gear, Sarzonia and Hammerite can split that one.

Vastiva will also split the Cullenus claim with Hammerite if the "colonial epidemic" has claimed them.

Vastiva would like dibs on the Donathatonia colony if its gone out of it, preferably the fortifications protecting the waterway and the southern mountain claims. If we can have it all, we'll take it all, otherwise that will do.

RomeW - might I suggest you TG each member who hasn't posted in a bit to see if they're still interested, and if not, remove their claim as the "colonial epidemic" claims more victims?

For the record, Transdormania does not exist anymore. That colony is also up for grabs.

Vastiva: Here's what I'll do: I'll give the inactive colonists a week and after that week I'll send out TG's to the inactive colonists (i.e., those who haven't posted in this thread in the past month or longer) to see if they still want their colonies. Then I just might institute a NS-style rule saying that those who don't TG me telling me they still want their colony and/or at least make one "updated report" in this thread lose their colony. However, I don't want to penalize people because they have other issues (NS or otherwise) to attend to, plus not every RL colony was active (e.g. Belgian Congo). I might also send "reminder" TG's a week before expiration, but I don't want it to come off, for the lack of a better word, as "nagging". I might also ask for help on the TG part- as a University student myself it's hard to find time for everything.

The latter part is all in the planning stages: it's not set in concrete just yet.

EDIT- Another shot in the dark: unclaimed colonies could first be offered to anyone wanting to join the thread and then it could be offered to the current colonists. With regards to new colonies they'll have to start off small and expand into the territory instead of being assigned the whole territory right away (if a colony is wiped out it would have to be rebuilt for the whole land to be useable again), but I can be flexible if the old colony wasn't huge to begin with.

Just an idea.

The city of New Nycton, with a population of nearly 476,000 and it's surrounding defenses will be the only national land of Nycton. The nearly 120,000 troops stationed there is going to be withdrawn to 1 legion, or 10,000 men guarding the city itself. 3 more legions, the 81st Infantry legion, 12th Armored legion, and the 2nd Imperial Marine legion will stay for peace keepers in the client states. OOC has the splitting of the failed colony of Bennetome been factored in yet?

Could RomeW simply announce who collapsed at the appropriate time and let the scramble begin?

The plague idea has a certain logic to it for the colonies that cease to exist in my opinion.

Press Release
The Colonial Office is taking contracts for development projects in the Dominion of New Kern, as is that government. Most particularly, contractors able to handle large construction projects including the establishment of a nation wide electrical grid, large airports, and the expansion of the seaport at the port of Oildale are sought.

Press Release
The Center for Disease Control wishes to announce that in spite of rumors of a strange plague in the area north of New Kern, no signs of any strange diseases have been found in territory under the control of New Kern. Rumors that the people of Bennetome died of an alien form of hemoragic fever are simply groundless rumors.

Special orders to the Dominion of New Kern Military Command and Imperial Forces

"If individuals are found to have the disease identified in New Hope, they are to be immediately isolated and provided with only those medications necessary to ease their suffering. All personnel exposed are to be immediately quarantined. Sites where patients are discovered are to isolated and if necessary, eliminated with the use of fuel air explosives. Under no circumstances is a patient with this disease to be evacuated to any area other than specified CDC hospitals. Under no circumstances is this information to be released to the public. Questions regarding such patients are to be answered that they contracted Hatfields Disease and regrets given concerning their deaths."

and you are as far from me as Belguim is to Kamchatka.

I am also aware that in real life all of us at some point would notice the fact that in some colonies radio signals are ceasing, and that most people, cut off from support from their homelands, with supplies dwindling, would be screaming for help.

Scramble does not mean launching jet fighters, in this case, scramble is like what happened when the European Powers scrambled into Africa in the 19th Century as fast as they could to annex as much territory as possible.

I see no reason why light troops with limited equipment could not at least establish a presence in the area I am moving into. I am not talking tank divisions here, but light infantry units. Logistics is well within reason in this case, and survey teams, scientists, emergency relief people and the like could move in just as fast by aircraft from my principal areas (which are essentially just across the border)

With the land area such as it is - well you can "claim" whatever you want. Patrolling your border is another thing entirely. And a single division would not be able to see the border from end to end, let alone patrol it.

Does that scale now tell you what you're dealing with? We were all shocked as hell when Nova Hope figured it out.

"But Mr. Prime Minister, a colony? Who makes colonies anymore?"
"We do, and plenty of other nations I believe, so I need you to get out there." Prime Minister Aron Christopher said to General Quentin Thomas. "I don't know if we'll even find any land, so here's the plan: you're going to go over one of cruisers, once you spot land, send out launches and look on the shore until you find some place that looks unclaimed. Once you find a spot, move on in and begin construsction of an outpost. Make sure you retain contact with me at all times, is this all clear?"
"I guess so sir, I just think it's kind of silly to be colonising again, that's all."
"How bout this, if this all hits the fan, you can say you were right."
"Oooh, great, I can be right, just what I always wanted. We have the 40,000 civilians requested and the 10,000 military you wanted going there, and they're all loading up. We might have to take another cruiser though."
"Take the civilians in the big cruise ship, I want them to go over in style."

True enough about patrolling the border, but then, generally vast tracts of wilderness don't need to be patrolled, the climate, terrain and lack of roads takes care of a lot of that

I indicated in the New Kern post that New Kern was moving into areas in the southern half of the colony of Bennetone that had previously been occupied by the previous owners

my point is that I am simply closer than everyone else, hence my reason to rush into what I could grab (which seems reasonable IC for a colonial power to try to get away with)

Either way, its not too important until my rather ominiously huge relatively nearby neighbor announces what he is doing

any news about Zaktar? and would you Kiwipeso be willing to talk about a partition of Zaktar if they vanished after the mysterious energy field apparently ate a lot of them? (referring to an early post by Zaktar) (assuming the player vanished too, although its a bit early to tell there)

[QUOTE=Vastiva]Nope. you're WAY off. You're two and a half times the distance around Earth at the equator away from my main colony. Your colony at the moment is one and three-quarters times the land current day China holds.

Incidently, I was basing my reply to you on the original outline given, which indicated the place was as big as Eurasia with Africa included...

I probably missed New Hopes post (it is a rather huge thread isn't it) so I apologize for the error there

Yes, a partition would be fine, I just want to be free to expand north because I might ship a lot of colonists to the area I have.
I await news as to the expansion, I could easily put in tens of thousands from my over crowded mainland.
