Switch to shots, right now.

Why? Put your nose right in the glass and sniff. Try to ignore the "drink me!" smell of alcohol. Apart from that, the smell is ... rotten apples, right?

That's what you're going to smell of tomorrow.

The "scotch" smell, worn-out leather and caramel, is far preferable.

Sacramento is going to vote for it. That's a midwest city more than the 'hippy North' that Santa Cruz and San Francisco is.

The lead is still staying about the same in terms of votes.

I'm getting worried about MO. The lead is still big enough I'm not sure if the remaining city votes are gonna be enough at this point. I've was only thinking they have about 10K left in them.

Precisely the point. Black turnout was enormous in the early voting in GA - + 10% from the normal figures.

And it's true that in Georgia, we didn't see the early Obama surge in the returns that we did in, say, Texas, another traditionally red state with heavy early voting this season. I'm probably still wrong in my Georgia pre-election prediction, but I am filled with renewed optimism.

Georgia was close. Close-ish. That's huge.

My thouhts have turned already to whether or not the map has changed... or if we're just seeing the cult of personality made manifest.

Obama is obviously HUGELY popular. But - is the Democratic swing towards conservatism in the last two cycles paying dividends? Is the general US population rebelling against the harder line of the rightwing? Is this election a referendum on Bush? Or is this OBama-nation?

Has the complexion changed? Will Georgia be in play in the next cycle? Are we seeing the dawn of the next paradigm?

Montana was close-ish too. I think that's also a pretty big sign.

Colorado, North Carolina, and Virginia, at least, will remain in play for the foreseeable near future on the national level. The demographic shifts in those states, and state/local shifts, trend liberal. Personally, I will say that while North Carolina is by no means an unusually liberal state on the whole, it is a pretty progressive state that takes education and changing for the future seriously.

Because it will be Obama sitting on the incumbent advantage, I think Georgia will be in play, unless he manages to drop the ball. In 2016? Not as sure.

They still haven't called North Carolina?

Jeez...now they're just milking it...

If the results are already conclusive, why bother counting any other votes? :p

(I know, I know, I'm being silly.)

My thouhts have turned already to whether or not the map has changed... or if we're just seeing the cult of personality made manifest

a lot of it is demography, as evidenced by how well 538's regression looks to have done on its own. the country is getting less white, and more young, urban, and ethnically diverse. which is why the republicans' plan for a 'permanent majority' (remember that? ha!) that relied on alienating all three of those characteristics was fucking stupid.

I still won a bet. I admit I was a bit conservative, but I still was on the high end at the time. I'll give it to you. In the early predictions, you were the highest.
No, I was at 387. It looks like 376 will be the final tally (if Obama pulls out both Missouri and Omaha) but Fonzica could be spot on (he has to root for McCain in Omaha!)

A bit of new news...North Carolina has officially been called for Obama by the AP. According to them, there are not enough outstanding provisional ballots to close the gap. Only Missouri remains.

Go Missouri! I know McCain is ahead there, but I'm still rooting for another spot of blue!

Colorado will stay in play because it's very much an independent state more so than a red state or a blue state. It's also got its own particular brand of politics.

Speaking of politics, I saw this weird news ticker title on Keith Olberman's show while my dad was watching it...Republicannibalism. Someone explain that to me please?

I imagine it refers to how the Republicans are turning on each other Lord of the Flies style. Senior McCain aides are leaking bad things about Palin to the press, Randy Scheunemann backstabbed the McCain campaign to help Palin and got shut out as a result, etc.
