1. Because I'm completely apathetic to the OT program now, and I'm not coming back for Spring of '09, so why even bother anymore.
2. I have to send my research proposal to three people who'll look at the rough draft and get back to me on it.

We had to deal with Dubya for 8 years, so even on the off chance that Obama ends up being incompetent, we'll be pretty used to it.

And at least he won't torture, illegally spy on us, try to suspend habeas corpus, and generally shit all over our constitutional rights like Bush likes to do.

I think it's going to be tight.. unless the many ppl supposibly supporting McCain .. secretely vote Obama..

And then I have to worry about his ass getting assassinated.. and not by a dumb ass redneck.. but our own Gov or a major power holder in someway.

BTW I do not think JFK was killed by some lone jerk. So if you do, maybe you will believe that IF .. God forbid something like that happens to Obama, it was a loner or a racist.

If Obama does get killed .. yay to you yankees in the great white north and out in the n mid s west boondocks.. I'll (plus many) be slap dab in the middle of shit.. but I'll hold my own.

By the way, there is one other aspect about PA that you didn't mention: There is minimal early voting. This means that, aside from military and absentee ballots, every voter votes tomorrow. This means that they can, in theory, be swayed up untill the very last second.

And, as a nit pick, CT only as a "likely Obama"? Really? Hartford Courant had them at +25 Obama as of 10/22. Since June, the lowest lead was +12, and that was months ago.

There's some good analysis on FiveThirtyEight.com too

I voted Chuck Baldwin for president. There won't be any real substantive change from either major party candidate, and I will not go on record as trying to choose whether D or R was less evil. They both scare me.

I particularly like this little tidbit:

It was the first time since 1968 that the village leaned Democratic in an election.

So it looks like good predictions for tomorrow where this election is going. Consequently the same village voted for Bush last election cycle. So it's intresting enough.

Also, Obama has an early, but tiny, lead.
In the first voting of the day, Mr Obama defeated his rival by 15 votes to six in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.

Another small New Hampshire town with a tradition of polls opening at midnight, Hart's Location, has also gone for Mr Obama by 17 votes to 10.

Saw a report on the Maddow show that many of this year's "in play" states have not been "in play" battlegrounds before, have not had to deal with that kind of madness, and may not be prepared for the heavier than normal turnouts expected. The mayor of Richmond, VA, was on, expressing worry about his state's preparedness for crowds potentially even bigger than the early voting crowds. Things seem shaky, logistics-wise, for Alabama and parts of Colorado, too. One CO official was quoted as saying that, if things don't go perfectly, they might not have a result until well into Wednesday. All that would be because of technical glitches/breakdowns of voting machines, not having enough paper ballots, counting ballots by hand, etc. Seems like we have the potential for several Floridas this time around.

Hopefully that won't happen, but I'll be looking for other things to watch on tv.

I don't have to work today and none of the other things I do have to do can't be put off, so I'll be bringing a book down to the polling place and relaxing. Though I doubt my sleepy little neighborhood, with its high concentration of people ducking outstanding warrants and having no ID, is likely to experience long wait times. My mom, over in commie-Cambridge, cast her vote in less than half an hour.

- This is the first election since 1980 that a Bush or a Clinton hasn't been on the ticket.

- This will be the first time in 40 years that Yale will not have one of its former students on the ballot as president or vice president. Not since Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew battled Hubert H. Humphrey and Edmund Muskie in 1968 has Yale been shut out.

Just a couple of tidbits I found after reading an article on why we vote on Tuesday (agrarian/religious reasons: harvest usually done by November with weather not as bad as it would be later + Sunday for worship, Monday for travel, Tuesday to vote and rest horses, Wednesday for return trip).

Also, every time I've been to vote here I've gone near closing and there have only been 4 people in to vote (2 being myself and my husband))

Sorry, personal joke made public. (One day hubby was watching TBS and my bigot of a mother was like "why are all the gays allowed on TV?" and he told her they were changing the name of the station to LGTBS, and she got all indignant and so now I just keep saying it to piss her off.... and sometimes when I'm sleepy it travels into my brain when I mean LGBT)

The S, I believe, means Straight. It's an alliance between all five for equal rights for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgenders, and Straights, if I remember correctly. This may or may not include the right to marry, instead of the use of civil unions.

Edit: Despite Smunkeeville's explanation, I have seen it both ways: LGBT and LGBTS, where the S indeed meant Straight. I guess it depends on where you go on how it's known.

Yeah, I've seen both LGBTS (the S being for straight) and LGBTA (the A being for Ally) (And of course, other orderings of the letters, such as GLBT, or the insertion of Q, etc.) to mean that same basic thing.

Better electoral map:

Navy-blue: Four states in New England (VT, MA, CT, RI) and most of ME (Maine splits it electoral votes by district); four in the Northeast (NY, NJ, DE, MD) plus DC; four in the Great Lakes (MI, IL, WI, MN) and four on the Pacific (WA, OR, CA, HI): carried by Gore and Kerry, practically uncontested by McCain, double-digit for Obama, 226 votes.

Baby-blue: NH (Kerry but not Gore), NM and IA (Gore but not Kerry), PA (both Gore and Kerry, but McCain still tries), and Bangor, Maine (a little less blue than Portland, but McCain has given up on it), all going for Obama but maybe not all by double-digits, 38 votes.

Purple: FL and OH (the recount states) plus VA, CO, NV (were Bush both times but Obama has mostly led), 74 votes. Obama needs only Nevada (to make 269-269, and the Democrats control the House) if he sweeps the blue. If McCain takes away Pennsylvania: that would not make up for losing Florida (game over; and Crist is not in the mood to pull any shenanigans like Jeb); would barely make up for losing Ohio (Obama would then need either Virginia or Colorado; Nevada would no longer do); and even if McCain has PA+FL+OH, Obama wins with VA+CO+NV. As a practical matter, Obama is favored to sweep them all.

White: NC, IN, MO, MT, ND are within margin of error, 43 votes. If Obama overperforms his polls by 3-4% (and McCain underperforms by 4-5% with losses to 3rd parties as well as stay-homes), which I expect, he could sweep all the white states too, bringing him to 381.

Pink: WV had one poll where Obama led, but has gone back red; the Omaha district of NE now has more registered Dems than Reps (Nebraska Democrats are, of course, not like eastern Democrats; but those newly-registered folks might be all Obama votes); GA (heavy black turnout) and AZ (McCain's home state!) are closing fast; 31 votes, but Obama will get few.

Crimson: SD, AR, MS, LA, TX are only single-digit for McCain by some indicators, and so may show up pink on some maps, but he is not going to lose any of these.

Maroon: SC, KY, TN, AL in the Deep South; OK, KS, most of NE, WY, ID, UT, AK in the West are double-digit McCain romps.

Here's my breakdown of states of relevance, 9 states total, into three catagories. Assuming Obama keep new hampshire, iowa and new mexico. The catagories are "A: Big States", "B: Little States" and "C: Desperation States:

A: Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida

B: Virginia, Colorado, Nevada

C: North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana

Here's how it breaks down: If Obama wins any 2 from group A, he wins. If he wins all 3 from group B, he wins. If he wins one from A and one from B, he wins except for an OH/NV paring which gets him 268. If Obama fails to win 2 from A, or all 3 from B, or 1 from each (excepting Ohio/Nevada), he has to resort to his "desperation" states. Should he fail to win any from A, he will need any one from B, and any two from C. And, if things get really desperate, and he doesn't win ANY from A and ANY from B, if he picks up North Carolina, and either Missouri or Indiana, he wins by tie.

So Obama wins if he does any of the following: 2+ from A. 1 from A 1 from B (except OH/NV paring). 3 from B, 2 from B and 1 from C.

If he picks up the OH/NV paring, any other state will do it. If he fails to pick up any states from either A or B, but picks up North Carolina, any either Missouri or North Carolina.

So the break down is as follows, ANY of these paths will lead him to victory, assuming New Mexico, New Hampshire, and Iowa stay where they are:

Ohio and Pennsylvania
Ohio and Florida
Florida and Pennsylvania
any one of (Florida or Pennsylvania) and any one of (Virginia, Colorado, Nevada)
Ohio and any one of (Virginia, Colorado)
Ohio, Nevada, and anything else
Virginia, Colorado, and Nevada
Any two of (Virginia, Colorado, Nevada) and any one of (Missouri, North Carolina, Indiana)
North Carolina and any one of (Virginia, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania)

Of these combination, Obama is leading in Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, making the bolded choices the ones I see most likely to occur.

Neo, when do you expect early results to start coming through for these states? Hours, days? Weeks??

Of the scenarios that I believe are most likely victory for Obama, the one we're most likely to see first is a Pennsylvania and Virginia win. VA closes at 7 PM EST and Pennsylvania closes at 8 PM EST. Since Obama is leading in both of those states, and both of them will more or less clinch the win for Obama, if we get early results from them, the night COULD be pretty much decided by 10 or 11 pm EST tonight. If one of those states doesn't go Obama's way, and he fails to carry the other east coast swing states like Florida Ohio and North Carolina (or Ohio and Florida come down the wire and tak eall night as is very likely) we could be in for a long night waiting for the results in Colorado and Nevada.

My hope is that we're done by 11, with a PA/VA win for Obama. The rest of the states would need to be counted, but barring some ludicrous upset by McCain, if PA/VA both go Obama's way early in the evening, we'll be pretty much done.

And more importantly, when the situation comes up for future voters, they will get to cast their votes, too. You did a great thing!

What concerns me is that this is seeming to be somewhat widespread, if for no other reason than the poll workers are morons who didn't pay attention during training. What concerns me more is that other people might be faced with the same thing, and are less aggressive and argumentative than I am, and just accept the provisional ballot.

Meh. I could give a shit if he's black or white. I vote on policies and I couldn't stand all the blacks** in line with me waiting to vote actually STATING out loud that they didn't know exactly what he stood for but were voting for him to 'represent' and because it was 'cool' and all that.

**Not limited to Blacks though. I know many Whites who are voting for him for exactly those same ridiculous 'reasons'.
You might not...but the fact remains, if we are looking to history to predict today/the future, then Obama should be losing. Historical president of race wars does not mean that there will be a race war in the case of loss or assassination, just as historical president of white male presidents doesn't mean there will be one today.
my understanding, 350+ or 375+ depending on who you ask.
I've always been told 375+

Also, Neo...consider throwing this link up on the first page:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/30/election-results-electora_n_139361.html
It has poll closing times for the US, probabilities from Betfair, intrade odds by state, Google Maps thing for president, senate, and house elections, CNN, MSNBC, and CBS's election maps (no fox, but the link is from huffington post. No shock there), and live streams of MSNBC and CBS. sort of a clearing house of information.

And with that, I'm off to vote :)

Also, don't forget, Free Starbucks coffee if you voted today! I don't care if you hate Starbucks...it's free coffee. And look at it as a chance to damage their bottom line.

My thoughts exactly. Even though Starbucks usually burns their coffee, hopefully they won't today because everyone voted, and then they are processing their coffee so quickly, they don't have time to burn it.

Well, I got to my polling location at about 7:30 this morning to find a line of 30-50 people ahead of me. Took about 45 minutes, but I was able to get my vote cast before the algebra exam.

I had to grin about one of my classmates though. She's a slightly older woman who came here from the Ukraine and she just got her US citizenship in May, so this is her first election and she was just totally excited about the whole thing this morning.

I might take advantage of the B&J's freebie. I don't like coffee, but I do love ice cream! :D

It is a m-c test where the questions are completely opinionated and where the outcome is predetermined by the answers on the blanks. Oh, and pretty much, the Electoral College has the choice to trump our opinions. Yay...

But hey, at least you get bragging rights that you voted and attempted to make your opinion count. That's what keeps me voting.

And then when I tried their nasty nasty oily craptacular assembly donut it made it even worse. Give me a small privately owned donut shop any day, any time, with warm, tasty, mouth-watery donuts. Two days ago I saw someone putting up Sally Kern signs in my condo's yard, and I explained to them that they couldn't put those on private property without permission, so they threw a bitchfit and left them, and I took them down and threw them away.

Then this morning I woke up early to go vote and there were 10 of them! The girls and I pulled them out of the ground and threw them away and went to vote, when we got back.....10 more  so again we pulled them out and threw them away. I saw a police officer while I was doing it and told him what was going on.......well, just now he rang my bell, seems he drove back by and saw the guy putting them up! Haha! Tresspassing! Also, posting political signs within 200 feet of a polling place!

Yay!

I went out and pulled up the signs and threw them away again. ;) There's a huge pile...I found out the security guard has been throwing them out all day too......we have like 50 Sally Kern signs in the dumpster.

I'm watching it too. I believe it's fake, as in they merely transcribe an image of the pundit into the screen.

I hope it's fake. Otherwise I can't possibly imagine how I didn't hear of it earlier...

Interesting analysis on CNN. Indiana is going 51% 48% in favor of McCain BUT the areas that have reported were traditionally red, and Obama has already flipped some former red areas to blue, and the major blue areas of Indiana haven't come in yet.

If Obama takes Indiana, it will be big.

Also, Obama has a commanding lead in Florida so far.

Thanks Cpt Obvious...
There isn't actually a hologram there; however, she is being recorded in such a way that she can be transmitted in full 3d so were there actual hologram technology, she could be portrayed that way.

It's not a true hologram that appears in the studio, I'm certain. However, the pundit in question described a 35 camera rig that captured her in real time to put her 'in the studio'.

It's a clever trick, but ultimately pretty silly. We'll laugh about the primitive technology during the 2012 campaign.

A friend of mine is telling me a few centers reported and there´s a leaning towards Obama. 1%, Miami reporting first. Apparently that´s a shocker.

This is not a surprise. 538 has her with a 4% to 8% lead in most polls.

I know that. But I was clarifying for people who were perhaps at work and reading.

It's mainly been Republican states that have shown results so far - Georgia, Kentucky, etc. Once the Democrat blocks in the North east and west coast vote it'll change rapidly for Obama.

I hadn't been paying attention to that. I probably should have.

I hope she wins and kicks Dole's campaign into the dirt where it belongs.

Hagin deserves a blowout after the absolutely abhorrent tactics that Dole used.

It's been fixed and Obama is ahead with 57% I think.
