It was a pain in the ass to get this onto here! :p

Forrest (http://media.putfile.com/Forrest)

I was born in Tennessee, USA, but have been all over. People from up North say I sound like a Southerner. People from the South say I sound like a Yankee. People from the Midwest just look at me in a puzzled sort of way. :D
wow that's a pretty commanding, strong voice eut!
i figured you might be a bit more softly spoken (not sure why... probably the whole "grandpa eut" thing :p), but i'm impressed :D

Pure Metal- Your sound clips didn't work on my comp, just a fraction of a second long...

I had no problems (apart from uncontrollable giggling, that is ;)).

@Eutrusca: Ooh, nice!

@Peechland: Yes, please put up your sample! I'd love to hear a Southern sample. And to me, Southern better be like something Tim Blake Nelson would say in O Brother where art thou or I won't recognize it :p. Keruvalia didn't quite satisfy that craving; goes to show that I've never been to the South & have a very wrong picture of "the" Southern accent.
And ever since I heard Stephen King narrate an audio book, even "the drawl" has lost its Southern distinction to my unfamiliar ears (btw, if this doesn't call for a sample from Maineiacs, I don't know what does ;))

Eh, we don't need poetry, but a bit more than 5 freaking words would be nice.

The accent in "styuopid" made me giggle, and your voice sounds really nice (and indeed quite sexy, thought that just might be the low volume :p), so don't make me beg for more. I cannot believe that pitiful smiley I stole from Fass didn't guilt you into recording something already! Your heart must be made of granite. Granite, I say.

Okay, so this needs a more proactive approach. Here's what you'll say:

- if your heart is really made of granite
- what you are looking at when you look at the wall right over your computer
- if you will finally let your hair grow out again
- what's the last thing you had to eat
- why you talk in such a styuopid accent :p
- and why you make me beg like this.

And don't you DARE and just read off this list!
Now, shoo, shoo, off you go.

It's interesting you should mention that about kids other than yours. All of the neighborhood boys use to hang out at our house when my two sons were younger. my husband was a youth minister for a while (he left that job about 2 years ago) and the teenagers still hang out at our house, the neighborhood kids hang out in our yard a lot when he is out there playing with the girls too, it's weird, kids flock to him and he isn't all that "fun" he is really quiet and doesn't speak unless he has to, but when he does everyone stops to listen. :p

yeah, I think that's why little kids like me, I can have a very calming voice when I want to. ;)

I used to work at a toy store and I could stop kids from throwing fits by just walking over to them and asking "what's wrong?" they just stopped crying and looked at me, I would talk to them for about 30 seconds and then they were fine. The parents loved me. It got to a point though that kids would come search me out in the store on Saturdays, one parent said that her kid asked to go to the toy store to "talk to Ms. Joey about a problem". LOL He didn't want anything he just had a problem and thought I could help him. (I did help him, I took an early lunch and talked to him in the break room)

Comments (in the order that the recordings were posted on the thread)

Smunke- You sound young (I think that has been mentioned) and you also sound like you are "reading". Maybe it's just your accent, but do you notice a difference in your voice when you are reading and when you are talking? If so, I'd like to hear your talking voice. And a random comment that actually applies to your accent- compared to my accent, the letter "s" is more pronounced when you say it. Singing voice guess: Messo-soprano

Sinuhue- Your "s" sounds are even more pronounced than Smunke's (I'm starting to wonder if I pronounce my "s" at all...) Not to sound like a creepy guy online (although I'm sure I do), but you have a very rational, soothing voice. Singing voice guess: Alto

-note- I'm noting a "reading" tone to all the samples. Perhaps we should record a bit (15s) of normal talking, conversation style, after the reading portion? And maybe a singing portion, if anyone is brave enough?

Keruvalia- Your drawl screams Texan, and I love it. Singing voice guess: Bass

Wallonochia- You talk very fast, almost like an auctineer. Once again I note that most people have an "s" consonant that is much more pronounced than mine. Singing voice guess: Baritone

Fass- Finally, some conversational chatter. Firstly, I would like to compliment you. I don't know anyone fluently bilingual personally, and I suppose I can't properly judge your Swedish, but you seem to transition between English and Swedish very fluidly (actually, you speak 3 languages in the clip ;)). Your english is very easy to understand, and your accent reminds me of someone I know... I'll have to ask him where he's from, perhaps near you (do you live in the US?) Singing voice guess: Baritone

Sarkhaan- Your normal accent is very similar to mine, I think, except with more sustained vowels. The Boston accent- well, I can tell where you got those vowels from. Where did you live before the Boston area? Singing voice guess: Bass

Pure Metal- Your sound clips didn't work on my comp, just a fraction of a second long...

Shotagon- The southern drawl didn't stand out until you said conscience... then it almost sounded like the Boston accent... and yes, your voice is rather strange. But it isn't too different from mine (Ohio) Singing voice guess: Tenor

Grave_n_idle- Your voice has a "hollow" tone to it (probably due to the cold). I picked up a bit of the South, but other than that, I'm guessing in the dark. Singing voice guess: Tenor, but that's a random guess because of the cold

Moto the Wise- Yes, very posh indeed. It almost seems like your "o" and your "a" vowels have switched. Singing voice guess: Tenor

Whereyouthinkyougoing- Something like a New Jersey accent, I think (but I could be wrong). You remind me of Harley Quinn from Batman, but with a bit less of an accent. Singing voice guess: Soprano

Erastide- Almost no accent, to my ears, although you do talk kind of fast (but not nearly as fast as Wallonochia). Singing voice guess: Messo Soprano

Northrop-Grumman- In my opinion, your accent is similar to Shotagon's. Close to mine (except for the electrical sounds that zing through... are you a robot?) up until the word conscience. Singing voice guess: Baritone

I'll stop there for now...

Simonist: Your voice sounds really refined. Like you've had voice training or something. I don't know if you have, but that air of sophistication it gives you is making you sound older. I really like the way you said endowed. Don't asky me why, it jsut sounds nice.
Well thank you! I've been acting since age six, that probably had a lot to do with it.

And I couldn't download Sinhue's either, which leaves me a bit depressed. Actually, quite a few haven't worked.

Incredibly enough, that is actually pretty close to how my voice sounds in RL (or at least in my head). Though probably not when I speak English, seeing how it's higher pitched then.
So, I like it, obviously. :D

I don't know, I could swear he pronounced some things just like Fass would, although that's unlikely, seeing how he's Texan and Fass does have a Swedish accent. Ah well, maybe he'll post an "awake" sample, too.

But then I tend to operate on a view of intelligence, somewhat like negetive freedom. You assume intelligence until I find evidence to suggest otherwise.

I've been acting since about a couple of months ago. After the first night I swore I'd never act again. I felt like I fumbled every 5th line. Luckily no one seemed to notice. Either that or they were kind enough not to say just how bad I was to my face.

Try living in East London for a few years... you'll get over it quickly. That nasal upturn just starts getting to one after a while.

Well here's the reason I'm curious to know what other people think: I live smack in the middle of the US, but not the twangy part (Kansas City, actually); my father's side, to whom I'm very close, are all Irish, and many of the older ones on my mother's side still somewhat retain their Irish or English accents, especially when angry or piss-drunk (both of which they frequently are). The nuns at the school I went to early on in life were from France, as was my acting coach when I was young.

Most of my speech hasn't been influenced by "American" sounding sources, so of course I get made fun of here. But when I talk to people from other areas they think I'm totally faking it. I just feel like I'm the only person in the world who speaks like this and it's kind of disheartening.

So I found my copy of Audacity and am fucking around anyway, so I thought I'd do this when the thread is too long for anyone to notice I actually did anything...

I didn't read the Human Rights thing, I thought I'd read a passage out of one of my plays to be more conversational, but that's really just how that character talks and since I'm no actor it just ends up being me reading it really fast. So I don't know how much value can come out of it, but I did it, so whatever.

As I say in the recording, the views and opinions expressed by that character are of the characters and do not neccisarily reflect the view of the author (you should see what happens to him in the end...) Also, not the best example of my writing, but whatever.

edit: In fact, here's my NCO voice, which isn't all that scary. Warning, there is some mild profanity.

NCO Voice (http://media.putfile.com/NCO3)
Good, but you should "pump up the volume!" :D

I've always had good lung capacity and it gave me a great "parade ground bellow." As a matter of fact, that huge volume once saved my older son from either serious injury or death. We were at the PX at Fort Benning, Georgia just coming out the front doors with our ( at the time ) three children. As three year olds are sometimes prone to do, he shot out the door and was going to run into the parking lot. There was a car coming along the front of the PX and I saw it just in time to yell at maximum volume, "Mark! STOP!" He came to a screeching halt just inches from the car. My wife almost had heart-failure.

I agree. At first I was able to play the putfile recordings, but know they are kaput. :(

Hehe, bazing! But yeah, it keeps saying the playlist format isn't recognised or something.

Why thank you *blushes*. Seems I'm a hit in England :p . Which is nice, considering your sexy accent, but also a bit ironic, considering that I'm German and the Tommies usually don't seem too hot about the Krauts :D. Except PM, of course, but he's just lovely like that (also part German, hehe).

Hehe - my pleasure. German eh? That would explain it, and don't worry - I've nothing against Germans :) (If I did I'd die of hypocrisy - there's a hot German girl in my philosophy class who I've spent the last few weeks eyeing up lol). But yeah, germans are fine... Argentinians however :D (j/k)

I actually have tears in my eyes from laughing so hard!

You're so going to have a heart attack any minute now. Where'd you even record that? In the basement bunker? Or are your neighbours all pulling their ears right now? :D

Oh, and I'm glad my little brain made me turn the volume wayyyy down beforehand!

Purposely thickened up your accent for that recording? "Dees" instead of "these"? "Ve vill"? You don't talk like that...

Yea Maciej said the same thing, I suppose its from being around my family all week. I was excited to see them (as they came out to see ME :), after I finished up Step 3)

So how are things with you?

I like it! But yeah, that's obviously very Southern. Apart from the "i", though, I think it comes out most in words like the "okay" in the beginning, or "say" (well, that's what was in the sample anyway). Just the pronunciation of the vowels is so different. And funny. In a good way! :p
