So, someone had linked to a thred started by Fass quite a while ago where everyone had recorded their voice so that we all could hear. I wasn't around then, and anyway none of the links work anymore so I thought that I would start a new thred.

I thought it would be interesting if everyone read the same paragraph so that we could hear the differences between everyone's accent. My original thought was the Stella paragraph, but after talking it over with Sinuhue, we decided that Article 1 of the Declaration of Human Rights would be nice, and she gave me a link where it has been translated into a load of languages.

So, please post your sample. You can host them at http://www.putfile.com/ (http://www.putfile.com/)

You can find Article 1 translated into your native language at http://www.unhchr.ch/udhr/navigate/alpha.htm

If you speak more than one language please post which is your native language, and please if you do speak english post at least one reading in English.

Oh, and please post where you are from (where you lived when you learned to talk) you can be pretty generic (like America- Midwest) but not too Generic (North American Continent)

Article 1.

I decided that my accent doesn't really show too well in that reading since I was in my "radio" mode, where I almost strip all my accent out. (like when I used to work at a radio station reporting the news)

here is me (http://media.putfile.com/smunkee-stella) with the Stella paragraph. I never really realized how weird my accent is, when I lived in Arizona people kept asking me "where are you from?" and kept saying "listen to her talk" now I know why

Don't have headphones because the housemate/ex and i both have extremely similar (and, of course, i'd say "good" :p) musical taste so we don't mind the other putting some choons on. As for shouting really loud...shouting South Walian man of early middle age? Christ, i'd sound like Nicky Wire. No.

ahaha..."how fitting" sounds like you are narrating for a haunted house. And damn if that isn't a tongue twister in Swedish.

It's written with the verbs reflecting plural person, which the spoken language hasn't done for more than a century, at least, and the written one was supposed to have stopped 80 years ago. So, you get my redicament being forced to pronounce "äro" followed by "utrustade." Switching between "o" and "u" in succession in Swedish is bloody hard.

wow. Fass your accent is like awesome! that's so cool. :D

I used to not like British English at all, but these days I'd sometimes much rather speak British English than American English, just because it can sound so darned sexy. Not that American Cool isn't sexy either, but still. I once worked on a project with a guy from England and always felt I sounded terribly shrill and dumb next to him. Sigh.

Also, I'm never too happy with how my voice sounds when I hear it not from inside my head but as a recording. But I guess that's true for most people.

A "joke." (http://goto.glocalnet.net/fass1/joke.mp3) You asked for it.
I totally expected that joke to be in Swedish. Oh I love this..."His...thing..."...and the way you swear...somehow it sounds elegant. I have a Croatian friend who pulls that off too...it enrages me because she swears constantly, but never comes across as crude. And your sarcastic ha ha ha at the end...priceless!

Thanks:)

Hahahaha....that joke went around by email a while back...as some sort of 'Ann Landers' anecdote.

This is just so cool...being able to hear your voice like this just makes you seem more....real....I hope you understand what I mean. I know you exist, I have interacted with you many times, but this just fleshes out your existance in my mind:)

Although, perhaps in a way it is bad, because a few NSers have become so dear and real to me that I would really like to meet them...but the distance is prohibitive. Why can't you all just live in Edmonton?

I suppose that's not all that different from here...though profanity so depends on context to make it vulgar or not. Nonetheless, I think the most vulgar word in the English language is '****'. I just hate that word.

Californians, people in the Northeast and the Great Lakes talk relatively fast compared to the Southwest (which does consist of part of California) and the South.

One guy rather humorously explains why Michiganders talk fast

Let me tell ya, it is DAMNED cold in Michigan, so you have GOT to conserve energy. Consequently, the right way to speak "Michigin" is to

1. talk fast,
2. slur your words together, and
3. clip all your hard consonants, like "t". Someone smarter than me calls this a "glottal stop".

Our definitions are the same. It's just the throaty speakers in my area have terrible, unbearable accents. There are no Scarlett Johanssons here, sadly. :p

I actually have a unique accent for my area. I grew up in the Corpus Christi area, amongst many Michiganders and New Englanders. I have a bastardised Midwestern/Northeastern accent that ranges from Minnesota to Boston. There's not a hint of Texas in my voice, and I like it that way. I'm nasally, but my voice is also deep.

Now, some Texas accents are nice (West Texas, South Texas), but where I am, they're terrible (East Texas).

Comments (in the order that the recordings were posted on the thread)

Smunke- You sound young (I think that has been mentioned) and you also sound like you are "reading". Maybe it's just your accent, but do you notice a difference in your voice when you are reading and when you are talking? If so, I'd like to hear your talking voice. And a random comment that actually applies to your accent- compared to my accent, the letter "s" is more pronounced when you say it. Singing voice guess: Messo-soprano

Sinuhue- Your "s" sounds are even more pronounced than Smunke's (I'm starting to wonder if I pronounce my "s" at all...) Not to sound like a creepy guy online (although I'm sure I do), but you have a very rational, soothing voice. Singing voice guess: Alto

-note- I'm noting a "reading" tone to all the samples. Perhaps we should record a bit (15s) of normal talking, conversation style, after the reading portion? And maybe a singing portion, if anyone is brave enough?

Keruvalia- Your drawl screams Texan, and I love it. Singing voice guess: Bass

Wallonochia- You talk very fast, almost like an auctineer. Once again I note that most people have an "s" consonant that is much more pronounced than mine. Singing voice guess: Baritone

Fass- Finally, some conversational chatter. Firstly, I would like to compliment you. I don't know anyone fluently bilingual personally, and I suppose I can't properly judge your Swedish, but you seem to transition between English and Swedish very fluidly (actually, you speak 3 languages in the clip ;)). Your english is very easy to understand, and your accent reminds me of someone I know... I'll have to ask him where he's from, perhaps near you (do you live in the US?) Singing voice guess: Baritone

Sarkhaan- Your normal accent is very similar to mine, I think, except with more sustained vowels. The Boston accent- well, I can tell where you got those vowels from. Where did you live before the Boston area? Singing voice guess: Bass

Pure Metal- Your sound clips didn't work on my comp, just a fraction of a second long...

Shotagon- The southern drawl didn't stand out until you said conscience... then it almost sounded like the Boston accent... and yes, your voice is rather strange. But it isn't too different from mine (Ohio) Singing voice guess: Tenor

Grave_n_idle- Your voice has a "hollow" tone to it (probably due to the cold). I picked up a bit of the South, but other than that, I'm guessing in the dark. Singing voice guess: Tenor, but that's a random guess because of the cold

Moto the Wise- Yes, very posh indeed. It almost seems like your "o" and your "a" vowels have switched. Singing voice guess: Tenor

Whereyouthinkyougoing- Something like a New Jersey accent, I think (but I could be wrong). You remind me of Harley Quinn from Batman, but with a bit less of an accent. Singing voice guess: Soprano

Erastide- Almost no accent, to my ears, although you do talk kind of fast (but not nearly as fast as Wallonochia). Singing voice guess: Messo Soprano

Northrop-Grumman- In my opinion, your accent is similar to Shotagon's. Close to mine (except for the electrical sounds that zing through... are you a robot?) up until the word conscience. Singing voice guess: Baritone

I'll stop there for now...

Have it your way ;)

Whereyouthinkyougoing- Something like a New Jersey accent, I think (but I could be wrong). You remind me of Harley Quinn from Batman, but with a bit less of an accent. Singing voice guess: Soprano
Um, okay.
I've never been to New Jersey (I'm German), I had to look up Harley Quinn on IMDb and have no idea which one you mean (let alone what she sounds like), I can't sing for shit and if I could I'd probably be a mezzo soprano (when I speak English my voice has a higher pitch than in RL).
But apart from that, sure. :p

Where's your sample?

Harley Quin was the Jokers sidekick in the cartoon show that dressed like a jester, if memory serves.

Smunkee- You sound young (I think that has been mentioned) and you also sound like you are "reading".
I added the last e to my name, just so everyone knows that's what I did.

I actually have quite a singing range but feel most comfy singing tenor (partly because it's easy, but mostly because hubby is a bass and then I get to sit by him:fluffle:) <----FYI that's the first fluffle I have ever used ! :D

Okay so I do strip out my accent when reading, it comes from working at a radio station reporting the news, my accent isn't "radio worthy" , I let hubby hear it and he agrees that it doesn't sound much like I do in "real life" so for you I am posting me talking normally. I couldn't decide what to talk about so I am going to tell a cute (I think it's cute) about my kids.

here (http://media.putfile.com/kid-story) it is....

why don't they have an embarassed smiley?

I really do talk funny :( :D

I know it was a character in Batman (well, okay, I know because I looked it up on IMDb). But there are several actresses who played the role over the years, so I don't know which one he means. And I wouldn't know her voice anyway, so there.

Really! I never realised that she appeared in anything other than the 90's cartoon version. Hm, learn something new, and often pointless;) , everyday.

Well, they should work, methinks. Just do what they told me to earlier: plug the headphones into the microphone socket and use them as a mic. Worked for me, although I do have the big ear-muff headphones. But that shouldn't make any difference, should it?

Well, okay, there's 5 actresses who played her. And the cartoon version is definitely the one who figures most prominently, so he probably means her. But hey, you still learned something new and pointless. :)

Sarkhaan- Your normal accent is very similar to mine, I think, except with more sustained vowels. The Boston accent- well, I can tell where you got those vowels from. Where did you live before the Boston area? Singing voice guess: Bass
haha...me? bass? who would have guessed.

Anyway, I'm connecticut naturally, so its still a "new england" accent, just more mild. And yeah, Boston still has the difference between high and low vowel sounds...IE cot and caught are two very different words.

I've been in boston two years now...native connecticutter, but Boston has always been my home city.

Believe it or not, I did send them an article I did once on the Uwarrie Mountains and National Forest. They were very polite, which is about all I can say for their rejection letter. Sigh.

EDIT: Actually, you would gain and hold at least the boys' attention if it was video and not just audio! :D
