I'm just back from a very, very disappointing blind date. Up until now, I would have been one eagerly telling people that looks don't really matter at all in any form of relationship, at least to me.

I'm afraid I have to revise that statement a fair bit now. I've met two guys online recently, one who I thought might have been "relationship material", and one who's clearly going to be a one night stand, if anything.
Now, today I've met the first of the two guys. And right from seeing him I just knew that this was going nowhere, ever. There simply wasn't anything about his looks that I liked... and the worst bit were his fingernails, chewed to the bone. He even chewed on them while we were talking. *shiver I just made up an excuse to get out of there, fast.
Now, I haven't met the other guy yet, but we've exchanged a couple of pics. If that's really him on those pics, I SO want to jump his bones. Relationshipwise, that's going nowhere, either, but, oh boy, hothothothothot.

So, ok, I hereby admit it, looks DO matter. And I'm a shallow person.

Everyone's looks are far from perfect. It's the unavoidable reality of an imperfect species. Look close enough and those imperfections begin to show. Fortunately, we're a shallow species, so those imperfections don't usually begin to show until *after* we've been together a while.

men are like paintings, they've got to look nice to get your attention but then they have to have a bit of depth too if they want to keep you interested (I'm pretty sure I stole that from a film but it doesn't make it any less true). And don't feel bad about judging people on their looks, everyone has different ideas about what is attractive, plenty of times you'll think guys are hot and sometimes you won't, plenty of times guys will think you're hot and sometimes they won't, it happens to everyone and everyone does it

Well, it's not all "shallowness". It's not like you were looking for perfection, just for something that you found appealing.

I once met a guy online (not in a "dating" kind of circumstance, just randomly) - we got along great, we talked on the phone soon after and still got along great, and after only a few weeks he actually came to visit.

And literally the moment I opened the door I knew that nothing was going to come of it - and not because he was in any way objectively unattractive or anything, but simply because he... I don't know...just wasn't for me.

Had I first met him in real life instead of online, I wouldn't have even thought of starting anything with him. There was just no "chemistry" between us whatsoever.

That experience made me quite sceptical about the mental image you get of people by only writing/talking to them.

And even if you have pics of someone - you still don't know if he turns out to have this annoying habit of chewing his fingernails or of never getting jokes or whatever.

Well, it's only natural that looks are important. Looks are a part(an important one) of what makes us attracted to the other. I won't really go date a guy who's not physically my type and whose looks really aren't up to par with what I'd want.

However, looks are important but not ALL. It's at least as important to feel emotionally attracted to the person, too. I generally don't date people with great looks with whom I know we have nothing in common, either.

Just going for one over the other paves the way for disappointments. I prefer to wait until I find a guy that appeals to me both physically and mentally. And with any luck, he'll also be both physically and mentally attracted to me, and we can live happily ever after...

To be shallow it's only when looks are all you judge a person on. Taking looks into account when judging a person - especially a person for whom you're looking at some kind of relationship with - is normal and healthy. I don't think a relationship can really last with no physical attraction.

i once met up with a girl i knew online and was local to me in uni (waay before glitzi). i wasn't expecting it to go anywhere relationship-wise, but i think she was. anyway we met and instantly i was both unattracted and also put-off... she had the most god-awful teeth i'd ever seen :-S and was at least 150 pounds heavier than any pic made her out to be (and she hardly looked thin in any pic heh).... we got on fine but the looks did matter and i was simply not, not, not interested.

All humans respond to visual stimuli. All human beings have a range of "interest" that is piqued by certain things they see. Much of what "interests" you visually was likely decided by events long, long ago, and possibly (somewhat) by genetics as well.

Long story short, you like what you like, visually. That is neither deep nor shallow.

Humans are also impressed and interested (or turned off) by behaviors.

So if this guy was causing you no reaction at all visually, and simultaneously engaging in a behavior you found personally repellent...of course you found him irritating and repellent.

That's what first dates are for. To fixate visually, and to evaluate another's behavior in your presence.

Nothing you have done is shallow so much as it was, perhaps, instinctive.

Dude's a dude. He'll survive it. Chances are, if he's like me, the nail-biting's a bad sign anyhow. Better to bail when a red flag goes up, before anything else gets committed to.

The thing that bugs me most about this whole situation is, my looks are far from perfect. VERY far. And yet I go around and reject others based on their looks... I feel I shouldn't do that. :(
There's a balance that must be struck, really. The other's looks don't have to be perfect, but they do need something you like, however small. Could just be a little thing: the way his mouth quirks with amusement for no reason at all, a particular look in his eyes. Something that visually stimulates you a bit. Humans do have multiple senses, after all.

The 20s where flappers and and a very different kind of jazz. The thirties where distinctly different thanks in large part to the Great Depression. The late thirties and early 40s share a lot of style because nothing is required to change due to a decade change on a calender and a lot of production stopped in preference to manufacturing for the war. But it's not really the same thing. Haworth doesn't even really have the style of even Mae West (thirties primarily).

Hmm...I used to know someone whose eyes changed color when she was in a particular mood....I think the turned gray from green...but it could be the other way around. Loooong time ago.

Mine change between dark, warm brown to bright, sparkly green. Depending entirely on my mood ;)

That's perfectly ok. I'ts just when they've been chewed of anf the sad remains look like they sank into the finger.... I find that simply disgusting.
So neither of us like my family very much, but for different reasons. :p
