One week earlier:

On a desolate moor, some miles from the castle, a small band of thieves sits. Of course, no-one can see them - they are too heavily disguised for that. But there they sit, in a deep, dank hollow, discussing the job. Not just any job either - this job is deserving of the 'the' at the front. It is the job to end all jobs; indeed, two of the five have already decided to retire after this motherload, and the other three only have to pick out decent nursing homes. The target, of course, is the only thing worth anything for miles - the castle.

Having just robbed the castle of the NS royalty (whose security has been so lax of late that a one-eyed child with no legs and a very poor sense of secrecy could have cleaned it out) the thieves are already wealthy beyond their wildest dreams. This job may make them Gods among men, but that is not their reason for doing it. They know that if they pull off this job, their names will be recorded in history - not just the vague, oral history where their names and identities will be forgotten, either. They will go down in the Great Ledgers used by the Hedonistic monks of Om, who - when not giving the nuns of sexual liberation a damn good seeing to - record every event worthy of true notariety. They sit, in this filthy dank pit, discussing the greatest thing they will ever do.

They realise, however, that this will be difficult. Ha, difficult. An understatement - this will be nigh on impossible. Even though the peasants have no love lost over the twisted Reject Royals, they do not welcome outsiders. This is only the beginning. The castle is surrounded by a moat of acid, and wild beasts roam the area, hungry for human flesh. Once over the moat, their is a 100m wall of sleekest obsidian to climb, and while technically possible, this has only been done once (at least, once by a mortal). The true danger begins once inside. The castle occupants are some of the most depraved individuals known to walk the Earth. They kill mercilessly (for kicks, no less) and are very protective of their castle. The way in is not through sheer skill. There is another way.

The occupants, while incredibly used to both overt and covert combat, are often involved in mass 'events' where everyone is occupied with the three 'S's - sex, sadism and slaying. These events have been known to last for hours, giving the perfect window of opportunity. These events are pretty much constant, so the thieves agree and set off for their plunder.

Tonight:

The thieves arrive, under cover of darkness. They reach the moat - not their first obstacle by far, having had to dispatch several nosy peasants and a few hungry beasts. The moat is not the first, but definitely the most difficult so far. They have a plan, though. One of the beasts had a very tough hide, and was over 50ft long. It wasn't attacking them, but seeing an opportunity, they took it. Dragging the beast to the moat, they roll it in and quickly jump on. The acid immediatley begins to react with the skin, giving off a foul odour - much like cooked flesh mixed with rotting food. Retching as quietly as they can, the thieves paddle across the moat with planks. The body is quickly being reduced to nothing, and the paddles bubble after each stroke, but they carry on as fast as they can without compromising their position. By the time they reach the opposite bank, they are standing on little more than hide using toothpicks for paddles. They plan to open the gate and cross the drawbridge on the way out, while the moat destroys the evidence of their arrival. However, there is a problem - one is missing.

Shocked at first, they quickly concede he must have fallen in; the problem with this theory being there was no scream. Could he have been keeping their secret, even to the grave? Possible, but they stay on their toes all the same - too many strange stories circulate the castle. They move to ascend the wall.

This is a work of true genius - the wall is like a sheet of glass, which no pick could penetrate. To circumvent this problem, they use suction pads. It will be a long, arduous task, but with black against obsidian, they will not be seen. Climbing the wall, they stay silent. Old habits definitely die hard. The climb is difficult yet monotonous - they keep their attention on the window and ignore all other senses, including the noises from the baying wolves. They reach the window in staggered formation and climb in individually - one, two, three... But the fourth is missing. They look out the window - there is no-one climbing. A thick mist covers the floor, making it impossible to tell where he fell. Probably fell. Definitely spooked, they continue through.

They creep out onto a dark landing, following torture weapons of increasing pain mounted on the walls - these are damned wierd people. They hold position at a corner while the first one looks around. There is a small, muffled sigh. Two of them turn to find the third missing. This was definitely no accident. Two daggers are silently unsheathed, but only one back goes against the wall - the leader is all alone.

He knows it is dangerous to move, but their assailant knows the thief's position. He makes a choice - the right one. He moves on quickly and quietly, staying in the shadows. He uses every trick he knows to lose the assassin, doubling back and hiding in alcoves, using bags of water to darken the flickering torches. He hears a noise and panicks, quietly sprinting, he stumbles through a doorway. And acidentally discovers the target. The giant ruby sits in it's platinum wire casing, the surface irridescant and...moving? Taking a closer look, he discovers that under the surface, the ruby is moving. This was not part of the deal. It should be solid, yet some strange light fills the centre....

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Whispers Tribes in the thief's ear. The thief doesn't move. Tribes is definitely impressed - the composure of this one is great. "I can understand why you want it." He intones in the other ear, "But was it worth your life?" The scimitar slides under his ribs, tickling his heart. The sensation is strange, like pleasure and pain wrapped in some mysterious new feeling - this must be death then. The light dies in he thief's eyes, and he slumps, a foot from his retirement. Such a loss, but an example was necessary to deterr...others from going against the Rejects. Satisfied, tribes cleans the blade and returns to the main hall.
