To those who still remember me and/or care what I am about to say:

I realized a few weeks ago, as I was stuck in my best with the worst case of mono, that it had been since June that I actually kept up with the ongoing and massive story of Steel Butterfly and the Orion Sector. Now I had taken breaks before, often during the middle of some of my best RP’s, but never one so long, and never one without even thinking of the stories swirling around my little created Empire.

As for the stories themselves, as I’m sure Clairmont and Tappee can attest to, we are still very much in the middle of Realm of the Risen III: Underworld's Ascension, which to all you Sol people takes place on Earth, and having wrapped up the opening and setting phase of the RP rather well we’re ready to dig even deeper into the action and the mystery.

On top of that I have resumed work on two separate side stories (that actually take place after RotR:III) that I have had in planning since January 2006. If you click on the links in my signature, you will see how much they’ve actually been written, lol.

Finally, I have begun working on a separate, non-Realm of the Risen related story that will be released upon the conclusion of Realm of the Risen III, and will effectively show what the Empire has become in what will be at that time, the decade since the Civil War came to a close. This story, entitled Shadow of Orion, will coincide with both a news story detailing the Empire’s newly aggressive military imperialistic efforts, as well as an Open RP for those who want to be involved.

The best part about this Open RP is that it is only in its first stages of planning. This is intentional, for I want those who want to be involved to have an active part in its planning. I feel, over my years of NationStates RPing, that this will give it the best chance to accomplish what I want it to accomplish. I want other nations, and not just my closest NationStates friends, either, to be able to roleplay within the Steel Empire and the Orion Sector without me forcing them down a set storyline of my own creation.

So, if you have ideas for the “Open RP” or if you merely want to say hi after months of me not really talking to anyone, post a comment. As far as who I want in this RP, I will take anyone and everyone, from the most experienced RP who has grown bored with what they’re currently doing to the least experienced who simply wants to get their name out there and practice their writing.

OOC: I believe I speak for everyone when I ask:

'What exactly do you have in mind?'
Steel Butterfly
28-12-2006, 01:19
Bah...well put haha.

The thing is, I have little in mind for this currently. It could be a party, a diplomatic meeting, or something a little more complex.

What I can tell you is that by the time this open rp takes place, the Steel Empire will have expanded beyond the Orion Sector, effectively blitzkrieging planets neighboring the sector, so if people want to take a "what the hell are you doing, hitler?" type stance then perhaps that could be a topic as well.

Basically, why I want to do this is because my RP's as of late have been closed to anyone other than Tappee and some others simply because the amount of backstory involved is literally over two years in the making. I want to meet some new people or reunite with some old, and I feel that an open rp of a random topic is the best way to go about it. In-character wise, my Empire has had minimal contact with anyone outside for over a decade, so perhaps my leaders/people are wishing to reach out.

I honestly have nothing in mind. Granted I can always come up with something if need be, but I was going to let that up for discussion.

Hah...another thing that I'm looking to get away from. All I've done lately is zombie threads or things of the sort.

..and while I'm no where near done it seems and I don't really mind it, I would like to get involved in something else.

How about you finish your damned 'Wasteland' RP for once instead of starting a new RP that you won't finish?

Haha...no compliment in the post unlike the telegram I see

Anyhow, Wasteland, to me, is a failure. With all the success I've had over the past few years, there are bound to be a few failures. Although few and far between, Wasteland seems to have fallen into the realm of my RP with the Trium, and Realm of the Risen: Black, which was deleted for graphic content and got me a forum ban for a month I believe. Wasteland truly has no purpose and really no direction, and I've learned from that.

RP's of its nature need planning, and for Wasteland, I didn't do my part before setting it up. The failure is mine, because I had no explanation of where the Wasteland was or what it was, nor how to get out of it or even a reason they arrived. If you read back over my posts in the thread, they all were nearly identical, and likewise, the posts of everyone else began to follow the same trend.

But, since you expressed concern here and even more so in the telegram, perhaps I will take a second look at Wasteland and really try to find a way to work with it. Not to be pompous or anything, but I truly do try to hold my RP's and stories to a certain standard, and to me, Wasteland was falling far behind the cut. Perhaps I also should have learned to take into account those I'm RPing with a bit more, but like I said, I will revisit it and see if it has any hope.

Aye, it's good seeing you around as well. I'm interested in any ideas you have for the content of this RP. Honestly I'm open to whatever would get the highest number, but most importantly, the highest quality of involvement.

OOC:

With your experience and expertise, I'm sure you have something hidden up your proverbial sleeve.

While I'm trying to stick to modern-tech stuff these days, there's such a lack of decent content lately (since Jolt, it's gotten harder and harder...) that I'm thinking I need to branch out a bit.

Come to think of it, Ms. Shentavo's 'The Elite' is the only decent RP I've been involved with in a very long time...

Whatever you propose will be a refreshing change of pace.

While I do not normally participate in modern tech such, I am willing to participate considering that a good majority of the people who responded to you are also in my little black book. Since it's your return, run what kind of rp you want to. If you start it...they will come.

Though it helps if you give them vodka...*cheers*

29-12-2006, 02:18
Hmm...well it seems that it's going to be up to me to come up with a plot haha. Given that my nation is, in fact, future tech, the RP will probably be as such, regardless of the plot. Sorry to those who are strictly modern-tech. Still, modern-tech nations who are a bit more flexible (i.e. recognize that although they are modern tech, much higher tech levels exist) should still be able to be involved.

As far as plot is concerned, I want it to be something along the lines of a scientific discovery made by the Imperial Army on the outskirts of Orion as the Army continues its planet blitzkrieg type activities, expanding the Empire beyond the sector.

I'm fairly interested in a science vs. military politics type thing, in which the Military wants a certain thing from the planet, while the international science community (where you all come in) want to defend/experiment on/rescue the discovery. I think it would be interesting to portray my military as the "enemy" of the story instead of the hero role the soldiers usually take.

Of course what I've still yet to come up with is an interesting "discovery" to be made, and if I want the military to be after the discovery itself or merely the planet for it's strategic value or whatever. I want to try and avoid any obelisk or something else cliche being the discovery if possible, for I think it really has to be something that all of our top scientists would be interested in, and not just the ones from my empire. As always, any suggestions would be appreciated, i.e. what would interest your scientists enough to travel to Orion?
The Blastit Empire
29-12-2006, 02:50
Sounds interesting!

Although I probably won't want to participate if it is a Nation RP (still don't get those much lol), if it is a character RP, I may join up!

Perhaps the interesting discovery can be an ancient alien artifact that can be used as a devastating weapon or something that can be of great knowledge to civilian life- perhaps a better way to get rid of harmful bacteria or vaccinate against deadly "uncurable" diseases.

Or perhaps a Nation's/Civilization's lost probe that crash landed that would give invaluable information to an army looking to invade (galaxy or planet, either), or invaluable information for future poplating a planet to a planet bursting with overpoplation, starvation, war, etc.

Or it could be something like an alien creature calling out to certain key figures to help save their dieing race from the slaughters or brainwashing the attackers are doing.

Or possibly the alien creature itself can be used to help people by building cities, solving problems- like a saintly creature, while the Military wants to manipulate it to use it's enormous powers to aid in their invasions.

LoL yeah, they may be a bit "bleh" but I had good ideas earlier that I had forgotten when I left my computer...

OOC: Are there any rare elements that your military uses for either weapons or fuel? Perhaps a strange mineral with properties to enhance the durability of your shipboard armor plating or provides a boost to the shields when installed within the generators by increasing the energy output? That might take a while to research, thus giving the military and scientific communities time to bicker over who gets what.

I'm sure scientists could come up with more peaceful uses for such items, and the military would want them for the aforementioned applications.

Personally, it seems a bit cliche, but it might work.

Is there a particular year this will be set in? I keep three different story-lines around for past-tech, modern-tech, and future-tech RP's. In the time line of the third one, the Argonian people finally have their own planet. Of course, I can adapt it, too.
Steel Butterfly
29-12-2006, 03:07
Haha...there are two parts to my response, Blastit.

First of all, as I'm sure you will learn, everything for me is a character RP, regardless of if it is a war or a sporting event, and regardless of the character involved is a simple insurance employee or the Emperor himself. Years ago there were a number of us who started the character RP trend, and I haven't looked back since. NationStates was a lot different back then haha.

Anyhow, as for your ideas, first of all, thank you for giving them. I like them in varying degrees. Please take no offense to any of my thoughts on your ideas, I'm just kinda thinking out loud here and anyone can disagree.

The "alien artifact" idea, be it a devistating weapon or somethat that can be "of great knowledge to civilian life" is kinda cliche, and both are rather one sided. My military would have no problem allowing such a great benefit to civilian life to be studied, and would never allow any foreigners in if it was a weapon.

The information probe is better, although it would potentially make for a boring story. The information itself would have to be outrageously secretive. Actually, perhaps it wouldn't be boring...hmm...it definately has potential

I don't know about an "alien" creature. I really don't want an ET-type thing...or a horror movie where the creature is a badass. Not a bad idea, but not really what I'm looking for. As for the military manipulating somethings "powers" for their own benefit while scientists want it for another thing is quite similar to a storyline I did about a year ago. I like it, obviously, but I don't want to repeat.

My military uses phased energy weapons, and that's really all the more I've gotten into it. Writing was always my strongsuit...not science haha. Also, I've written of a "doomsday" weapon before so I don't want to go down that route. A nation really shouldn't have multiple doomsday weapons. It gets kinda wanky.

What I'd say to your idea is, why couldn't it be simply researched for both the civilian and military uses, kinda like nuclear technology?

As for what year...it's kinda difficult to put it that way. Granted I'm not really a fan, but I've always taken a sort of Star-Trek like approach to different tech levels. There were many different cultures, each with varying levels of sophistocation and technology on the show. Likewise, in NationStates, while some modern-tech nations simply ignore future tech nations, others interact with them but know that their technology is inferior. In the same way, I've interacted with modern-tech nations, knowing that my technology is superior.

For me, it's the year 2006 in the Steel Empire. However, while on Earth people were being conquered by Romans and killing Jesus 2000 years ago, people on Steel Butterfly had just won a massively destructive war against an army of artificial intelligence and founded what would become the Steel Empire of today. I've always had it in mind that humanity either grew faster or started earlier in Orion than in the Sol system.

If that causes a problem for anyone, I can just not bring it up though.

Now that you've heard from both of us, what did you have in mind?

Haha yes, when there were two types of RP's:

1. A "shocking" news report followed by responses from the leaders of every nation.

or

2. Wars always ending in invasion and total destruction of the losing nation.

Both entirely realistic of course...lol...

As for what I was thinking...um...haha...I need to keep thinking...

A little more information on the plot:

This RP, when it starts, will go hand in hand with a solo story of mine, and the two will be somewhat connected, but the two plots will be independant.

Basically, my Emperor will be the newest member of an unknown international Cult-like organization that has been prophecising a certain something for years and years. After all their research, they have concluded that the person who fulfills the prophecy is in, or close to, Orion. Hense why they inducted my Emperor into their society, as well as the real reason why my Emperor is now invading the areas and planets surrounding the Orion Sector.

He is searching for the person to fulfill the prophecy. My solo story will be about that. In this RP, I kinda want to go with him/them/us finding something else. Haha...however I still don't know what I want yet.

OOC: When that third story-line is occouring, I've got little scout-teams spread across the universe, looking for new and interesting things to study or destroy, depending on the mood. It'd be a lot more believeable when a decently-advanced civilization arrives via scout craft than a modern-day space shuttle, which wouldn't have that kind of range anyway.

My nation just recently underwent a modernization effort that sparked a civil war. The space program has taken a back seat to pacifying the insurgents and getting the rest of the country to a modern-tech level.

I'll figure something out...

Anyway...

1. What if this element is so rare that there's only enough for one or the other?

2. How did you get banned for explicit content? I take it was violence?

1. What if this element is so rare that there's only enough for one or the other?

2. How did you get banned for explicit content? I take it was violence?

1. Hmm...then that would almost mean that it was too rare for all of the nations that would be involve to benefit from it. A crude example: if there is only one of this element, so it either goes to the military or the civilians, what happens if my civilians or my military get it...would there be enough for your military/civilians and everyone else's who is involved?

2. My first real Realm of the Risen sidestory was Realm of the Risen: Black. It was written entirely by me and I had gotten like 3 or 4 pages full of good-length posts when I wrote something that the mod squad didn't find really appropriate. A part of the story was the "bad guy" stalking this girl, and to get whomever was reading the story to hate the main "bad guy" even more, I wrote that he raped her, and while I wouldn't call it porno writing, it was rather discriptive.

I got forumbanned for a while and promptly made a puppet to fight with the mod squad in the mod forum for about a week straight, and basically I was banned for not keeping it PG-13. Well I was rather livid about that, being as there was, at the time, no real rule saying that whatever was written had to be kept at a certain level. Obviously rape, let alone the horrific experience that I wrote, is not appropriate for a "PG-13 audience", but I was unaware of this "rule" when I wrote it.

Not only that, but they deleted the thread entirely, instead of simply editing or deleting the one post. Luckily I save all of my RP posts on an invisionfree board, but I was rather upset about that as well. Needless to say, nothing came from my protests and I served my forumban without much noise for the rest of the month, but for a good while there I was quite the unhappy person haha.

What if, rather than a discovery, it was that an international team of scientists invented (possibly inadvertently) something which, while intended for scientific purposes, could potentially be quite dangerous, or, better still, do something else which the military wants, like for example find the person your Emperor is searching for. The scientists want to retain it, while the military wants to take it. Basically a variant on the cliched storyline. Still, just ideas.

Ah, I remember when character RPing was first invented. I recall that, as SB mentions, there were a group of us that sort of created it. I recall the first one I ever entered, in May 2003, with Gothicum, Nathi, Silver Cities, and some other people. Fun stuff. I like to consider myself one of those who invented character RPing. Since then, I just can't get into 'I made a twenty paragraph description of the technology of why my aircraft carrier is undetectable by your radar'. I don't even specify plane types, for instance. I'll just say fighter, bomber, etc. I believe vagueness can help a story evolve a lot better, the same way insane amounts of description can help it in a different way.
Steel Butterfly
29-12-2006, 04:58
Ya I mean it could go either way, but once again we have the problem, this time, of what will be invented, just like the "what will be discovered" problem.

I'd almost rather it not be something tecnological, or at least not a weapon. I just think that going another, even "similar but not," route would make the end result more original...
Steel Butterfly
29-12-2006, 05:32
What the hell happened to the forums? Anyhow…here’s a list of things that could be discovered/invented if we wish to go down that route. Feel free to add to the list yourself or comment on the ideas.

1. Something that could bring a person back to life, but only once, and only if administered right after. This would probably be discovered by accident (like someone getting killed then coming back), although I’m not sure if this is too fantasy or out there for some of you. I know I could make it interesting, however, if we want to go down that route.

2. Invisibility would be interesting, and most likely something that would be more invented than discovered. I don’t, however, want to make it a gimmick or rewrite “Hollow Man.”

3. 10-second time travel. This could be either invented or discovered, and it would be a way to travel back in time ten seconds in order to avoid something bad that could be avoided if you knew it was coming. This is stolen out of the movie “galaxy quest,” although given the quality of that movie I am convinced that we could do it better.

4. An alien. Yes, I know I said I didn’t want it, but the “revealing” of it at the beginning would certainly be stunning enough to draw people in, and it would be an exciting story to tell. The only problem, like I said, would be the ending. I don’t want the scientists to be fighting for their survival, and I don’t want it to actually be a nice helpful alien. I really don’t know another route to take with this one…

What if it was part of a long-dead alien? Just enough to get DNA from it? Then it could be a mean, vicious alien, and the scientists would want to study it, and the military would want to alter the genes slightly to make it subservient to them before recreating it in droves. Since either way would take a long time, we wouldn't have the issue of worrying about the actual alien, it would be purely scientists in favour of studying it against military wanting to recreate it as a weapon.

Hmm...I hate to continue to shoot ideas down when obviously I'm lacking solid ones of my own...

But once again...what would stop them from both studying it for different reasons? If the military found this when they landed on the planet, they would report it to the Emperor, who would send scientists to research it for whatever purpose the Emperor thought of.

This almost has to be something that NEEDS international support/help/assistance.

More on the military, they don't necessarily have to want to item. It could be something where they simply want where the item is...ie...the planet.
Haraki
29-12-2006, 06:43
Two ideas:

First, the alien DNA could be discovered by an international team of scientists which could therefore claim it as their own and not allow your military to take it.

However, if you don't want to carry on with that one, my second idea:

There could be a basically dead planet, but which contains valuable minerals or something, or is in a strategic place so the military wants it. But there could be something there from an extinct civilization that science wants to study, that could probably be expanded on.

Alternately, there could be a primitive civilization (Much like Earth, say, 2000 years ago) on most of the planet's surface which the scientists want to preserve, cultivate, and study. The military wants the planet for whatever reason - resources, placement, whatever. If you wanted to make this one more complex, you could make the person the emperor is seeking one of the people on the planet, one of the 'uncivilized' primitive ones.

I don't want to be simply a think of my military taking it and pissing off the international community...

...however...

...I actually really like your second idea, although altered a bit. First of all, the prophecised person has already been determined, and that will be taken care of in the story anyhow. But beyond that, I think it would be interesting if the "discovery" is a previously unknown of civilization on this planet, more akin to Earth in say...the early 1900's. This is quite odd, considering that the Empire can scan for lifeforms from far away, and this civilization has never been picked up. The RP can start with our international team of scientists undercover in the society, trying to find out what it is about them that lets them evade scanners, a trait that obviously would be useful to any military.

However, to change this up, I'm going to have my Chief General be the one who doesn't want to land on the planet and disturb the people until they are studied more, since he wants to be able for his men to avoid scanners. The Emperor, however, driven by the urge to find the prophecised person (which won't be known of until during the RP) grows more and more impatient as the person isn't found, and starts believing that this person is on this very planet. (which ultimately he isn't haha)

So what do you think? Does it give you stuff to work with?

Well, you could always go back and look at the plotlines of long dead allies, the plotlines those allies were based on or the unfinsihed ideas of them.

Such as The Brotherhood of Nod.

Whatever planet you're using at the moment getting hit with an asteroid carrying a crystal that has the characteristics of a plant and the ability to mutate humans. It's also very useful for weapons of war and technology of peace. And it's also trying to 'terra'form your planet to be more habitable to aliens.

Not sure how much Tiberium actually influenced his RPs though. Ah well.

Sounds good to me. Would you want citizens of your nation to be played, or from various nations? If so, how will international people get involved with this event.

Hmm...well first of all these people who have this trait aren't quite citizens of the Empire yet since they weren't even officially "conquered" yet.

Anyhow, how these "international community" RP's always start is with three pages of character introductions, the characters meeting up, and then introducing themselves to each other. I'm guilty as well. I want to try to avoid that, and instead put our characters already in the situation and then tell, through narration, how they got there.

As this RP will deal alot with the Empire of Orion's Temporal Directive, which basically forces citizens of Steel Butterfly to go out of their way to avoid interrupting or involving themselves in societies and cultures unaware of higher technology or life on other planets, all of our scientists will have to hide or otherwise conceal themselves when observing and studying these people.

There will be a hidden base/lab of sorts set up on the planet where our characters, who all already know each other since they've been working there for a month or two, will sleep, eat, and do their research and experiments.

My first post, as it looks now, will be my three characters (I'd suggest 2-3 for everyone, not including national leaders or whatnot off the planet. Enough to be able to post alone if no one else is around, yet not too many that it gets ridiculous.) on a scouting mission, observing the people from afar. When one of my characters does something stupid (like make a sound...I haven't figured it out completely yet) they'll run back to the base and meet up with the others.

You guys should plan your opening post accordingly, making them seem as though they are "middle of the RP" posts that still manage to introduce your characters in a more subtle manner. Also, don't feel anywhere near rushed, for I need to finish something else up before this starts so that it fits the timeline. I also haven't even begun on my first post, so don't feel like you're behind.

In the meantime, we should begin to finalize who all will be involved in this RP. I want to keep it "open" until about a week before it begins. If you know anyone who you think may be interested and who are quality writers who would give it the time it needs, be sure to let them know about it.

Simon Federov is a culutral anthropologist whose first case study was that of a primitive civilization discovered in the thick and resource-rich jungles of an already-colonized world. His case study was instrumental in understanding how the civilization's culture would be affected by relocation to a different part of the world in order to access the resources, and it gained him a patron from a fairly prestigious university, who after some time has managed to get him assigned to study the Vespians. His morals can be a bit lacking sometimes (He did, after all, conduct an entire case study to see how to most efficiently destroy an entire culture's way of life) but he is fairly dedicated to the cause of gaining information about his subjects.

James Fenway is a data analyst and technician, who stays in the base, usually on his computer, taking the data the others collect and inputting it into his computer, which is probably the single largest source of data on the Vespians. Once finished with that, he analyzes it, sees patterns and incidents and draws conclusions about their society. As he spends most of his time on his computer even when not working, he's quite good at lots of those handy computer things, like web searches and solitaire.

Btw, does this prophecy have any influence from the failed "Messiah" RP?

It'd be more accurate to say that Messiah would have influence from this RP, since it will technically take place before Messiah does. As for Messiah, it is still well in my plans, just in a form that was 90% different than what we were planning it to be. The problem with Messiah is that it is the definitive end for an absolute ton of characters and a story arc that is literally three years (real time) in the making. But fear not, for a year or so from now (probably longer with how these things tend to go) in real time, Messiah will take place, haha, don't you worry. Just be waiting for that telegram...lol...March 2008. ;)

I also want to tell everyone how excited I'm becoming for this RP to take place. Instead of working on my current RP's like I should be during my NS time, I've been diligently writing my first post for this one. I have to say, I have already fallen in love with this post, which is something I that tends to happen maybe once or twice an RP during the course of it. Perhaps this is a good sign. My characters are quite easy to write it seems, and the less omnious tone of this RP compared to many of my others is quite refreshing8

So say this RP started hmm...within the next two days...

What would be better? Tonight? Tomorrow? (Not tomorrow night haha. New Year's baby!) The 1st?

Basically what I'm asking is if I start it tonight, since I have a post written already, and since it seems that a good number of us are on, would it take off, or should I wait a day or two?

I have work tommorow, but i have a feeling i'll be staying up tonight for someone else, so go ahead and start it. my msn is ravelynshentavo@hotmail.com. i find it sometimes easier to talk over that then tgs as i have to be not lazy and open a new web browser.

I should warn you that if we start it tonight I might get off one post over the next three days. After that, well, tomorrow's new year's eve, so you can probably guess what I'm doing. The night after that I'm busy as well until around midnight, which leaves little time for NS. Which would mean I probably wouldn't get another (or a first, maybe?) post out until the 2nd or around there.

In other news, my schedule is always fairly lax, but especially so for the next week, maybe two.

I've seen it three times. Once in Toronto, once in Chicago, and once in Pittsburgh. If you loved the movie you would cream your pants at the show. It's even better in my opinion, and there are much better phantoms out there than mr. butler, with far superior vocals.

I've performed both "Music of the Night" and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" at different recitals, and not to boost my ego any more than it already is, these recitals weren't little hometown events.

I was somewhat of an enigma in highschool. I played varsity football, but I also had the lead in the school musical. I'd go out and get hammered with my friends, picking up girls and what not, and then come home and spend hours writing on my computer for NationStates. I always loved not fitting into stereotypes haha.

It think that a diplomacy RP would neat, and nice change. However, I've been feilding the idea of moving Tappee temporarly to towards more isolationist policy. Truth is I have had some idea's for temporal RP's (ie time travel) and would like to get some of those off the ground, not to mention a change from zombies would be a good idea.

If you want some of my character to make an appearence in the diplomacy RP it can easily be a arrage, but I think I would prefer a less active role as it would with what I have planned long term for Tappee.

Steel Butterfly
01-01-2007, 22:38
Wow...I can't even explain how I feel about you guys right now hahaha.

Anyhow, my night was rather eventful. First of all I made dinner and burnt my forearm rather badly by touching it to the oven door like a retard. At least the lasagna was good...my arm still has a cute second degree burn on it.

Next, I got a somewhat random call from a girl that I had a major crush on in highschool. She was two years older and absolutely gorgeous. Well...she's still both of those things...but anyhow...we've been pretty good friends for a long time but eh...I haven't talked to her for a while so I wasn't expecting it.

Nevertheless I go over to her place instead of the party I was going to and pounded some whiskey and cokes like a champ, a martini as the ball dropped to be classy, and a shot of gin because we were morons. Then around 2 she got rather ill and puked for a good hour. Me, being the general sweetheart that I am, held the hair back, got her water, and all that good stuff...even got her to brush her teeth before she went to bed.

Now, she demanded that I stay with her, which as a guy who is not an asshole, presents an interesting problem, considering she's one of my best friends, she was completely wasted, and she's been dating some guy for a year and half. Luckily she passed out rather quickly so I managed to simply fall asleep, avoiding anything unfortunate at the time.

Somehow, we both manage to wake up with the sun (however that happened...), and upon confirmation that she was now sober, we proceded to...well...make me the "other guy" lol. So afterwards her hangover began to hit her (how she avoided it...) and we fell back asleep. That was all cute and fine, up until her roommate, and best friend, walked in on us to check on her and found us in a rather...compromising situation hahaha. This I didn't know about until I got dressed to leave after lunch and saw her roommate on the way out. Luckily, her roommate likes me much more than her boyfriend haha.

I always end up getting myself into these situations lol. I don't cheat myself, but I have a serious problem with "taken" girls. This is hardly the first time something like this happened haha. Ah well, at least her relationship is within a week or two of ending. Previous ones had been going much stronger.

Either way, it was a new years I'm likely not to forget for quite some time. I got to act out a fantasy from like...oh...six or seven years ago I guess and brought in the new year with whiskey, rather amazing sex if I dare say so myself, and a disgusting burn on my forearm. Eh...two out of three ain't bad hahaha.

I think I might get a post up where he spies up close and personal on Susie's house, which I've designated as the main group he's been watching, same way SB's have been watching Fred and Anne. After all, you can't get a good image of a culture by watching one family, especially a rural one.

For reference, basic idea of Susie's family.

Susie (stay at home mom) plus as-yet unnamed husband (works in a factory in the nearby town which their house is on the very edge of, gets to and from his house by a vehicle very similar to a rudimentary bicycle) plus three or four kids, none of whom are old enough to have begun working or schooling yet (I'm thinking 1-8 years old). Wires have been planted throughout the house for at least a couple weeks, and combined with Simon(and possibly others?)'s long-range surveillance, they have gotten a fairly good profile of the family and James has been drawing some conclusions about the culture form it.

As for James, from the wires and his sheer boredom at hardly ever leaving the cave, he has the ability to rudimentarily speak the local language.

Anyhow, I've been looking for the whole multi-family aspect from the beginning, however I didn't want to be here making OOC demands. Once again, haha, good work on that.

And I like the idea of James having access to the wires and such. This goes for everyone...as long as it fits your character's description and job. I applaud anyone who is willing to expand on the plot or this society that "we've found." Just don't change it. Everyone knows the difference.

So then would they all be living in the Cave?

Sorry, but some things I read confused me (could also be the fact that I've been going on with less than 6 hours of sleep almost every night for the month) lol

Nah it's alright. I have the luxury of creating this situation...so I know what's going on.

They're all living in the "cave," which is really a lab/dorm-like complex carved out of the inside of a mountain on the planet Vespia. "Cave" is just a nickname they, or somebody, nicknamed it, since I guess that's what it kinda is, and it's something easy to refer to it as.

They all live, eat, sleep, and work out of the cave. Transporting back and forth between the planet and somewhere else would alert people to higher technology and the presence of the observers...both which would break the Temporal Directive. While your individual nations may not have anything against the TD, the situation which the scientists find themselves in is a sort of international law limbo.

It's kind of under Imperial law...but then again...since Vespia isn't yet an Imperial planet...it's also not part of Imperial law.
Haraki
06-01-2007, 06:13
We could say that it's under Imperial law because the funding is coming from an Imperial source. So then we could have a nice conflict point from the scientists thinking they shouldn't be bound by Imperial law but knowing that if they break it the mission ends and the Empire invades (though they might not know that part).
The Blastit Empire

I suppose there should be some limitations...but nothing too much. Just enough to stop a poor scientist from selling secrets to the highest bidder haha.

And Haraki, I like that angle. Some one, perhaps you (I can't remember), already kinda went down that route and it worked well.
Steel Butterfly
06-01-2007, 17:36
Also, Rave, just so you know, lol, one of them has been kidnapped and is now in a great glass tube in the middle of the lab. Read back over my posts...it's in there haha. Sun wouldn't have a problem getting DNA, in fact that's something Steven's trying to do as well. Also, she'd have trouble not noticing the body that, by now, has been there for a good day.

It's not something that my characters only did, in fact, with how it's written my characters wouldn't have been the actual ones to do it. Just making sure the story makes sense...

Nah I mean I figured that's what it was. I'm just trying to sculpt this RP a bit. I don't want it to be as much "the steel butterfly team" or "the haraki team" or whatever among the scientists. I want it to be truly an international team, and one team at that. You and Blastit are doing quite well in that regard...the rest of us haven't been interacting much up to this point I suppose. Also, like I said, the dude's on the table in a big glass tube in the middle of the lab haha. Kinda hard to hide him. ;)

Just making sure if having my guy try and go meet up w/ his "family" will mess up the storyline, or cause too much of a disturbance, because I can derail that.

Nah. As far as storyline goes, I have the ending planned, but everything else is off the cuff. That way, it still makes sense in the end and the story has a "goal" to move towards, but how it gets there is up to the whims of all of us.

I'd suggest at least that your guy meet with his family kinda under the radar. Being that it's rather illegal and the punishment is quite severe (as I noted in my latest post) he should keep quiet about it. I'm not sure all the scientists would approve. But by all means, do it lol. I'm not sure everyone approves of kidnapping and smashing pots over people's heads to save identities either...doesn't mean its not done haha.

Stuff like that makes the story that much more interesting. I don't want Blind Reflection to turn into a documentary of the Vespian people haha. There's only so many times characters can sit there and observe the culture, especially since they've been doing so for over two months now as the story goes. It's only natural to want to raise the stakes a bit.

NG, would you mind if my character Simon joined you on the visit to the family? I believe I made it fairly clear that he was fed up with watching from a distance, and this seems like the sort of thing he would do. As every good story should have. The "is that legal?" question made me laugh for whatever reason. You have good comedic timing I guess. As good as I write, as I sit here and toot my own horn lol, it's something I never really got. Ironic maybe...but definately not comedic. Comedy is something I can't manufacture from scratch. Everything I've ever said that's been funny has been a prefab joke that I didn't make up, or something topical to do with something that just happened.

I also like the character of Chris. Makes me laugh, especially his cluelessness and obsession with COW. Not to mention the fact that he named a robot COW.
