UK NS Meet III: London
I V Stalin
08-07-2006, 11:59
The NS Meet tour (TM) will hopefully soon hit that mighty metropolis that is London, and I have been given the honour(?) of organising the bloody thing. :p
So, as this is only in the very first stages of planning, I need to know who wants to come, what dates you can make, and where in London you want to go...
I'm thinking of making this around the end of August/start of September. It will most likely be on a weekend, probably a Saturday (to accommodate those people who have normal 9-5 Monday to Friday jobs).
Seeing as how this is London, I imagine people will arrive in various different places depending on where they're coming from. I'll be coming into St. Pancras station, and I know the area around there fairly well. It's within easy walking distance of Tottenham Court Road, Camden Market, and isn't too far from Oxford Street and Soho.
So, could you please include in your replies: what dates you can make around the time stated, and where you want to go.
Ok, here's a list of those who've said they'll be there (so far):
I V Stalin
Pure Metal
Glitziness
FairyTInkArisen
The Infinite Dunes
SHAOLIN9
Ollieland
Tactical Grace
Rhursbourg
Anarchic Conceptions
Melsonland
Egg and Chips
Tribes of Longton
Gruenberg
The White Hats
Compulsive Depression
The blessed Chris
Maybe Terror Incognita. Not sure, though. Confirmation would be good...(?)
Looking good so far.
End of August is looking unlikely as several people have said they'll be away, so it's more likely to be early September, either the 2nd or the 9th.
Finalised stuff (messed around with 19/08):
We shall be meeting at the Euston Flyer, on Euston Road, near Euston Station (other side of the road, though), at approximately 1pm. I imagine people will turn up one or two at a time though. We shall drink. We shall talk. We shall drink some more, and if sober enough, talk more. We may, if we feel like it, explore the mean streets of our glorious capital.
There's a Pizza Express nearby that we can go to for dinner, then go back to the pub until it's time for people to head home/to other peoples' homes/to other accommodation.
Link for the YHA hostel on Euston Road: http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/hostelpages/173.html
More new stuff (added 10/08):
The date has been finalised as the 9th of September. Apologies to anyone who can't make this, but don't worry, I'm sure we'll have fun without you. ;)
Directions (this is important, please read):
If you're arriving in London at St. Pancras or King's Cross - get to Euston Road. You want to be on the opposite side of the road from the entrance to King's Cross. Facing the entrance to King's Cross, walk left. After about a five minute you'll (hopefully) see the Euston Flyer.
Arriving in London at Euston station: Again, get to the opposite side of the road. Facing the road, walk right. The Euston Flyer is at most a two minute walk.
Arriving in London anywhere other than the above stations: Take the Tube to either Euston, Euston Square or King's Cross/St. Pancras (it's served by one station).
Euston is on the Victoria and Northern lines directly linked to Euston station, so make your way out of the main exit of the station and follow the directions as for 'arriving at Euston'.
Euston Square is on the Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City lines. Come out of the Underground and head east (it'll be just after midday, sun will be roughly due south, I hope you're intelligent enough to work out the rest). As far as I can remember, there are no special landmarks around the exits to Euston Square. Sorry. Go to King's Cross/St. Pancras instead - it's only one stop more (or fewer if you're coming from the other direction).
King's Cross St. Pancras is also on the Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City lines, and possibly others. Get up to street level and follow the instructions for 'Arriving at King's Cross or St. Pancras'.

i'd like to come, but you know that :P
dates: any time but away between the 19th and 26th august (glitziness is away from the 12th), so anytime after the 26th.
go: difficult question. there's lots of choice. if i travel with glitz i'd be arriving at paddington, but if i travel straight there it'd be waterloo. i don't really mind where.
would have suggested going to the Royal Institution cos its all classy, they have good lunches and meeting rooms etc, and i've been a member for over 15 years and it'd be nice to use the stupid place for something else for a change :p but its closed for refurbishment till next year :(
there's a nice jazz bar close to the london eye that might be pretty good. food's ok but they do have a bar, and (perhaps on saturdays) live music :)

Any weekend's cool with me. I'll be coming in via Liverpool st. Station but I know London fairly well as I work all over it so can meet anywhere. Don't have ideas on locations to go to yet.....I'll give it some thought. :)

I can make it. I'm stuck in London for the rest of the summer. I'm so glad it's no longer 80% relative humidity. That was killing me.
So I should be able to make any day really.
As for places to recommend... well all the places I used to do to wouldn't let me in anymore as I don't have a London University student ID anymore. But even if I did I'd only be able to get two guests in... but then, if the current attendence trend continues then that wouldn't have been a problem. :p
As for food though. I know a Nepelese place behind Kings X which is quite nice and a Lebanonese place in Soho. I could probably think of more places if I wasn't just typing whatever I'm thinking.
So... um... yeah. That's about it really.

Chinatown for proper Chinese maybe?
All I'll say is that I do pest control all over London and I point blank refuse to eat in Covent Garden or Piccadilly! Trust me on this one - ignorance is bliss!:)

It won't necessarily be a vegetarian restaurant, just one that has lots of veggie options...hmmm...if you're ever in Budapest, you have to go to a restaurant called the Vegetarium. The food's great, and there's board games and shit (not literally shit) to mess around with while you're waiting.

1. Money. Skint and unemployed. I have several applications in for a job, but if one of them comes off, I'll get one.

Hey, Leeds is fucking cool, we have riots and shit like that. Reading's full of Shandy-drinking Southern fairies* who quietly sit in their tents after the last band and discuss politics of 19th century russia, or something**.
Anyway, I'm going to find out how much a train ticket and accomodation is before I commit to this. I'm quite a way from London - if only you'd hold it in Manchester, I could show you all around a bit and just stay in my monstroo student house afterwards :D

Neither, as I'm technically not a Manchesterer; I just like to think of myself like that because otherwise I have to admit I'm from...*shudder*...the countryside. I'm actually from Preston, hence I suppose I support PNE. We'll make it to the premiership one year, mark my words!

Anyway, I'm going to find out how much a train ticket and accomodation is before I commit to this. I'm quite a way from London - if only you'd hold it in Manchester, I could show you all around a bit and just stay in my monstroo student house afterwards :D
you better come damnit! (and the first one was in manchester)
for starters you're one of the NSers i'd most like to meet, and for seconds the more the merrier! :p
it took me 4 hours to get from southampton to manchester for the first meet, so to london should be at least an hour off that.
as for accomodation i stayed up in manc in a holiday inn... which wasn't cheap :P but i guess there's plenty of cheap hotels or hostels in london, or maybe you could shack up with one of us for a night (i would offer but we'll be travelling the wrong direction and i'll probably be wanting to stay over at glitz's that night)

Ok, I was in London for a short while today and had a quick look around before my train left...
I think most people will be coming from the north (correct me if I'm wrong), so will be arriving at (and leaving from) one of St. Pancras, King's Cross and Euston stations.
Near these stations (as they're all so close to each other) there is an O'Neill's pub, a Scream pub, and what appears to be a slightly more traditional pub called The Euston Flyer. There is also a Pizza Express opposite the British Library.
I figure we could start the day at one of said pubs, go for a wander around the streets of London, go back to Pizza Express, and then finally to one of the pubs before we all leave and try to remember where the hell we're meant to be going.
I'll update the first post with these details as well.

Almost certainly cheaper, especially seeing as they'll probably have started selling this year's batch of yellow cards. My biggest mistake of last year was never picking up a yellow card because I was too drunk. :D
As for where we go, pubwise, it depends on what sort of thing we get up to. I mean, if you all just want a quiet pint somewhere and discussion about..anything, the old pub is almost certainly better. Plus, I'd quite like to see a bit of London - last time I was there it was for an interview at ICL, and all I had time to look at was the Science Museum next door.
I'd be coming in at Euston, seeing as the Preston trains always do.

Firstly, has Kellarly been seen on the forums recently?
Secondly, there's a YHA hostel on Euston Road, a short drunken stumble from the pubs I mentioned.
Thirdly, what is the general feeling about meeting at a pub, getting drunk, then going to a branch of the Church of Scientology, conveniently situated about three quarters of a mile from the pub?

Proceed to sleeping arrangements in local YHA building, stopping off at the local scientology church on the way to berate the money-grabbing idiots who run it. Sleep. Get hung over (optional).

Right after I add The blessed Chris. Under-age drinking...*shakes head*...disgraceful. :p Wouldn't have caught me doing that...I could always outrun the buggers. :D

Only place in Poole I've been to is the serpentarium and aquarium - Is that place still running? :) Dorset generally is pretty cool though, swanage is best! :)
no idea... i'm from 40 miles that way of poole, but i do know they have an awesome beach there :D (which leads me onto...)
If we're still on next summer, we need to arrange an NS meet as a beach party, complete with BBQ stuff and failing at surfing. :D
branksome beach! tis the one in the photos on me website... a beach wot is... cool. gah, am too tired to talk proper like :( (or even make much semblance of a point :P)

We could have an NS New Year meet in Edinburgh! Hootenanny! :D
 you're going further and further north!
i'd have to take a plane
*flails arms about wildly for effect*
however, an NS-pissup at the edinburgh fringe festival (and subsequent drunken debate) would be fun :D

First part of the Country to rise from the waves though. That means you were surrounded by beaches...once. About 3 billion years ago.

I imagine it could only have been better than it is now. Fewer chavs and emos round the clock tower, anyway.

It'd be geological re-enactment, surely? :p
Fuck it, it's so long ago it's almost cosmological re-enactment!
