M-499 Cavalier Coastal Defense Guns - We have the parts ready to install several hundred Cavaliers, but the installation process is labor intensive. The specs for the Cavalier include a reinforced concrete bunker, which houses all its equipment and ammunition. If you were to mobilize some of your civilians to help dig the bunkers, lay foundations, etc; we could probably have 300 or so ready in six weeks. Beyond that, we expect it will take two to three years before the last of your guns is installed.

We do encourage you to keep in mind that buying 500 aircraft every year adds up quickly, so you may not want to do buy that many for an overly long period of time.

We ran a promotion recently where our Vandal system was featured on our storefront's front page, which resulted in a large number of them being sold in a short span of time. We regret it will take 36 months to process that portion of your order.

To answer your question:

As sold, the Frazier cannot fire RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missiles. While we utilize RIM-116's on many of our ships, we elected not to equip the Frazier with them. RIM-116 missile batteries house 21 missiles. The launcher is quite large and not stealthy at all. We did not want to put such a large battery on the deck of the Frazier for fear of ruining the ship's stealth characteristics. Instead, the ship uses the MASS Multi Ammunition Softkill System (in addition to some Nulka decoys), which is sort of like a poor man's RAM battery. The MASS unit carries 32 multi-spectral decoys, which it fires at incoming missiles. The launcher it uses is stealth friendly and not overly large, and its decoys are effective against a variety of guidance systems. However, it is worth mentioning that the Frazier's can carry RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles. These missiles are capable of destroying hypersonic anti-ship missiles and aircraft, and they have a range of 50 km compared to the RIM-116's range of 7.5 km.

The Venom is in a similar situation. It didn't get a RIM-116 battery for lack of room. The Venom also uses the smaller MASS system, and has the ability to fire Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles. If you wanted a RIM-116 battery badly enough, it is conceivable the ship's two existing missile batteries could be replaced by a single RIM-116 battery.

When these ships were designed, their missiles (and torpedoes in the Frazier's case) were intended to be their source of offensive firepower. Their MASS systems and Bofors Mk.3 autocannons were intended to serve as their missile defenses. Space is at a premium on ships these size. The MASS systems offer a lot in terms of defense, and have minimal space requirements. The Bofors Mk.3 is as good a CIWS gun as one could hope to have. That gun was made to shoot down missiles. With barrel mounted radar monitoring muzzle velocity and the ability to fire smart munitions it should perform better against missiles than a run of the mill Goalkeeper or Phalanx.

If you are planning to buy either of these vessels, we could offer a bit of advice concerning their use...

Our government (particularly the Dartian Coast Guard) uses the Venom as a patrol boat. We typically use them in squadrons of two to eight vessels. One or more squadrons will be assigned to patrol a given area, and all the ships involved work as a team. When patrolling for smugglers, illegal immigrants, and that sort of thing; the Venoms typically split up to patrol the largest area possible. In more dangerous environments, the squadrons coordinate their efforts for safety. Half the ships in the squadron will use one of their missile launchers to carry anti-submarine rockets while the other half uses that launcher to carry Evolved Sea Sparrows. All the ships in the squadron will use their second missile launcher to carry anti-ship missiles. When they split up to do their patrols, each ship is assigned a sister ship with a different weapons load, which operates nearby (within 40 km or so) for backup. If they ran into trouble, they would have 16 anti-ship missiles, 8 anti-submarine rockets, 8 anti-missile/anti-aircraft missiles, 128 decoys, and 2 very good CIWS between them. Naturally, there are many variations of this strategy that can be used depending on the situation. You could ditch the anti-submarine rockets in favor of something else when enemy subs are not present, you could use larger formations for patrols in war zones, etc.

Concerning RAM, I understand your point that the 21 cell RAM launcher is large, but it has been used successfully on several small ships, notably the Gepard Class FAC. Perhaps the 11 Cell Sea RAM Launcher (which is supposed to be a direct drop-in replacement for Phalanx CIWS units) would be more acceptable. I ask these things, because while ESSM is clearly a superior choice in open sea, its range doesn't do me a lot of good in the brown water patrols up the Amazon I imagine my patrol boats doing alongside my Haminas, Jolly Rogers, and CB90s and, the newer RAM missiles are mult-functional, allowing them to work versus Aircraft, Helos, and Missiles; pretty useful. In any case, very nice design.

Vandaheim, used in the capacity you described, the RIM-116 makes more sense. We'll had our engineers put together a brown water variant of the Venom. It sacrifices its two rear missile launchers in favor of a RIM-116 battery with 21 missiles plus two more crew served weapons.

I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to talk to you sort of OOCly and ICly at the same time….

You have a defense budget in the $600 to $700 billion range. To put that into perspective, you spend roughly 50% more than the United States does in real life. Right now, you have over 5,000 aircraft, which is a lot for your budget, and I’m about to worsen than by recommending you buy even more stuff. That isn’t such a bad thing though. You can just mothball some of your aircraft, and train your reserves to use them in emergencies.

NAVY
Based on your budget, I would expect your nation to have aircraft carriers enough to hold 1,000 to 1,500 planes depending on your military philosophy. Your current carrier capable aircraft are 800 FA-16 Priests and 1,050 C-57 Firebirds. To be honest, I don’t know if the E-5 Networker is carrier capable or not, so I will assume that it is not since most AWACS aren’t.

We recommend that each of your aircraft carriers all carry:
2 x E-2 Hawkeyes (assuming the Networker is not carrier capable)
4 x EA-6B Prowlers (for electronic warfare & countermeasures)

After your carriers have those, we recommend:
40% FA-16 Priests (fighter/bomber)
40% F-40 Birds of Prey (air superiority)
20% C-57 Firebirds (multi-purpose VTOL)

Based on my estimates, your navy ought to have 450 to 650 helicopters. You currently have 120 RQ-8B Fire Scouts plus 95 SH-60 Seahawks in service with your navy. Your AH-23 Black Panthers and UH-48 Highwinds might also be carrier capable, but I can’t say for certain. Based on my recollection of your past purchases here, I know 120 Fire Scouts is the exact number your Zumwalt Class Destroyers are capable of carrying, so I wouldn’t change that. However, you are in dire need of some anti-submarine helicopters.

We recommend your remaining 330-530 helicopters look something like this:
40% Lynx or Merlin (anti-submarine warfare & transport)

We’ll start with your fighters… You will probably want to buy a few hundred more of them. Instead of going with more Priests, I recommend introducing a bit of diversity. Some air superiority and fast intercept aircraft would be good. From my storefront; the FB-22 Strike Raptor (fighter/bomber), F-22 Raptor (air superiority), F-46 Razor (fast intercept), F-40 Bird of Prey (air superiority), and F-36 Gladius (multi-role) are all decent choices. Naturally, other storefronts offer some good choices as well, but the point is that diversity would be good.

As for your bombers… the Sariel is a good bomber. Since you already have it, you may as well continue using it. However, I would recommend reducing the number you have in active service, and introduce some other bombers. Personally, I use a variety of bombers:

- a small number of expensive top-of-the-line bombers for use on risky missions and high value targets (Ravager & Shadowcaster)
- a good number of excellent but reasonably priced bombers for general use (Renegade & Lancer)
- a ton of cheap heavy bombers for use by my reserves (Stratofortress)
- a few aircraft specialized for close air support (Firebird, Thunderbolt II, Spectre)

If you look at some of the bomber/close air support packages I offer, you can get an idea of what ratios I tend to use.

For your logistics aircraft, you have 800 dedicated cargo airplanes plus many Firebirds. You could probably get by mothballing half of them, and let your reserves train on them for emergencies. What you desperately need is refueling tankers. I recommend buying some ASAP.

For reconnaissance aircraft, you have 150 E-5 Networkers. You could mothball more than half of them, and still be fine. I do recommend adding some surveillance UAV’s (you don’t need a ton) plus a couple dozen maritime patrol aircraft like the P-8 Poseidon.

For helicopters; you have attack helicopters, heavy life, and multi-role choppers already. You should be in good shape, but you could stand to mothball some of what you have already.

Mbulu, our credit analysts indicate your annual defense budget approximately $10 billion. For this reason, we cannot confirm your order as is.

Stareagle Low Level Air Defense System, Vandaheim

The Stareagle Air Defence System, built by Vandaheim Military Industries (VMI), forms an important element in the Vandaheimian Army's Forward Area Air Defense (FAAD) architecture, which includes C2I, radars, platforms and missiles.

The gyro-stabilized Stareagle telescoping turret with Starstreak missiles is mounted on a 4x4 MOWAG Eagle Chassis, but can also operate in a standalone configuration or mounted on a variety of military vehicles. The turret stows in a low profile travel mode allowing greater freedom of movement under bridges and on board aircraft and pops up an addition meter when deployed for full range of motion. Stareagle has a crew of two - gunner and driver.

ARMAMENT
Stareagle carries eight Starstreak short range air defence missiles in two launch pods mounted either side of the turret. These pods have a range of elevation from -10° to +70°. Missile reload time is eight missiles in less than four minutes.
Each Starstreak missile is laser beam riding and thermally guided, contains 3 high velocity kinetic kill warheads, has a maximum speed of Mach 4 and maximum range of 7km.

FIRE CONTROL
The fire control system is highly automated, including automatic insertion of lead angle and super elevation at missile launch. The gunner's station has a head-up optical sight slaved to a helmet mounted sight. Missile seeker activate and uncage and fire permit indications are projected on the sight glass. Driven reticles confirm the missile seeker is locked on to the same target the gunner is tracking.
Targets are acquired either by using the optical sight or the VMI/FLIRm2 Stareagle FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared). The FLIR sensor is fitted to the left launch beam and is boresighted to the aiming point of the missile pod. The FLIR has three fields of view - wide, narrow and a rain mode.
An eyesafe CO2 laser rangefinder provides range data which is processed by the fire control computer. An Automatic Video Tracker (AVT), produced by, is located under the gunner's console, with its tracking box on the FLIR display. The autotracker locks on to the target and provides a tracking signal to the fire control for control of the turret in elevation and azimuth. An IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) system is also fitted. Using a combination of Secure Data Link and GPS guidance, Stareagle is capable of interfacing with Air Defense Radar Neworks and engaging threats Beyond Visual Range (BVR)

REMOTE CONTROL UNIT
The Remote Control Unit (RCU), also produced by displays the same data available to the gunner, including the FLIR monitor display via a secure “Sharktooth” wireless link. It enables the crew to conduct engagements from remote positions up to 50m from the fire unit.

Also, I would like to know if there is anyway that we'd be able to have you consider building a submarine with carrier qualities. Obviously, it would not be as large as a normal carrier and would not hold nearly the normal number of aircraft but if a submarine could be built without a conning tower or at least a smaller one off to the side, which would allow for landing of aircraft, that would be fine. We are thinking of having only about 12-18 aircraft of smaller fighter size (the Razor being a possibility). We would, of course assist in sending a significant amount of funds for the project and would expect a significant (20%, at least) discount on all orders but that would be something that our governments could negotiate.

Antshilvania, to elaborate on the submarine... Back when this store was NTDA Allied, we experimented with a submarine aircraft carrier much like what you described. We got as far as developing a prototype, the Sojourn. The prototype was the largest and most expensive submarine we've built to date. Eventually, the project was canceled due to cost concerns, and has never been revived.

As for the specifics of the Sojourn's capabilities... It was intended to carry F-45 Tempests, UAV's, or a combination of both. The F-45 Tempest (http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r77/Dartia/tempest.jpg) is a compact aircraft with an elaborate folding wing scheme designed to serve aboard the cramped Sojourn. Prototypes of two Tempest variants were constructed including a base model and an enhanced Strike Tempest version.

The Sojourn prototype did have its shortcomings. Its "silent running" speed was not particularly good for a modern submarine. Also, it is unable to carry the same quantities of ammunition and fuel for its air wing as surface ships are able to provide.

If your nation is interested in developing this technology, we would be willing to revive the Sojourn project for $15 billion. In exchange for your financial participation in its development, we would grant you a 20% discount on the first 20 Sojourns you buy.

OOC: Maybe 8 months ago, I looked into submarine aircraft carriers. A few were made back in WWII, but they never really caught on, and only a few were produced. The big knock on them was that they couldn't carry many aircraft for the money they cost, so everyone went with surface carriers instead. Even though I found some pretty cool graphics, I never did much with it. I guess I was also a bit concerned that submarine aircraft carriers would spark OOC technical arguments whenever they came into play. OOC: About the B-2 Spirit... I wrote a pretty lengthy post about the subject (storefront prices) a while back. I'll see if I can dig it up, but if I can't, here is the short version as it relates to the B-2:

Most sources claim the United States spent between $1.7 and $2.2 billion for every B-2 Spirit built. The reason they each cost so much is because tens of billions of dollars were spent on research and development, and only 21 Spirits were ever built. So, each B-2 bares roughly 5% of the project's R&D costs, which makes up most of its price. However, once R&D was completed, the actual construction cost of the B-2 was around $250 million (varies depending on source). Had the US built 100 B-2 bombers instead of just 21, each bomber would have cost roughly a third as much.

Assuming my country shelled out the $36.5 billion or so required to R&D the B-2 Spirit, I would only need to sell 365 bombers at their current price before recovering my R&D costs.

The Interficeo landing craft.
This landing craft can go right up to shore and unload a tank plus 50 soldiers. The design is simple sort of ww2 style but it can travel fast and hold a lot of weight. It can go about 60 miles an hour but is easily destroyed. The are also used as emergency escape boats. It has no guns no radar and 4 inch armor. They are specially designed for the ship and cost an extra 5bill. So with the carrier and landing craft it costs 40 bill.
