Our local ship yards don't have the capacity to handle completion of this class of ships without seriously impedeing other programs.

We would like a ship with battleship firepower that won't slow down our carrier task forces. The primary usage that we have for this ship is to provide heavy naval guns to support marines ashore and as another missile platform in fleet engaugements.

We would like to comission the construction to 80% complete of 10 battle-cruisers based on the Alaska class. [We can complete them in our own yards.] These ships should be large enough to replace their fuel and boiler spaces with 2 or possibly even 4 nuclear reactors.

Space saved topside by doing away with the need for the stack will be replaced by a number of launch cells capable of ASROC, Standard, harpoon and tomahawk missiles.

Here is the Alaska Class Battle-cruiser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Alaska_%28CB-1%29). I would like for these ships to be capable of 31-36 knots and keep their primary and secondary armament. Instead of the 25mm, 4 CWIS or comparable systems provide close protection.

The original design can accommodate 4 seaplanes but we will replace them with wither Super-Lynx or Seahawk helicopters.

Modern radar systems and electronic countermeasures should easily top things off.

The Alaska class battle cruisers are large but relatively light considering their size at ~30,000 tons. This is achieved by trading armor for speed. To make the ship safer in combat, additional protection must be added around powder and missile magazines. I would suggest a cell type strategy with the ability to flood the magazines in the event of emergency.

I am authorized to suggest a development budget of 5.5 billion (low since the ships are based on an existing design) and between 1.8 to 2.4 B per ship depending on how they are configured.

Of course Elite would retain the rights to the Alaska II design and could add it to your inventory.

Orbath, we've gone over your situation, and are ready to make our recommendations.

As far as the organization of your men goes, we recommend something along these lines, which would be consistent with tried and true military organizational charts in use in many countries. There is a little variation to allow for 6 and 12 men sized units, which you indicated you wanted.

Section = 6 men - w/ a corporal in command
Squad = 12 men (2 sections) - w/ a sergeant in command
Platoon = 48 men (4 squads) - w/ a lieutenant in command
Company = 192 men (4 platoons) - w/ a captain or major in command
Battalion = 786 men (4 companies) - w/ a lieutenant colonel in command
Brigade = 3,072 men (4 battalions) - w/ a colonel in command

These unit sizes do not include command staffs, which would be attached to the larger units.

As for what you should be buying...

As you are landlocked with no navy, projected power will present a challenge. To compensate for this shortcoming, we recommend two things:

- Rely on your allies to assist in transporting your troops via sea.
- Invest the money you save by having no navy and marines on your airforce and airborne units.

In short, we feel you best chance to project power is to make heavy use of airborne units supported by your airforce. In your situation, it might be a good idea to have an entire branch of military service dedicated to airborne assaults (your version of marines).

Basically, the idea is that you send in your paratroopers with a heavy fighter escort to protect your transports. Your paratroopers will be tasked with securing an airfield or flat patch of land, so that you can start airlifting men and material.

In such a scenario, the following types of equipment will be desireable:
- lightweight artillery pieces (mortars and small howitzers)
- lighweight vehicles (APC's, IFV's, and Jeeps)
- lots of tranports
- VTOL's (both transports and multi-role fighters)

When buying transports, be sure to get a good mix. You will want some heavy transports for moving tanks and such. You will also want some Hercules type transports, which can make use of rough runways (like dirt roads).

Even with highly developed airborne capabilities, you will still have a number of challenges that nations with navies will not face. For instance, you will have a very hard time moving things like helicopters overseas as they simply won't fit inside a cargo plane. For this reason, we recommend developing strong ties with nations that can compensate for this shortcoming.

Otherwise, we recommend the standard fare for your army and air force. As you emphasized your nation is largely urban, we would recommend using a lot of wheeled vehicles if this were real life as they are much faster and use less fuel. Since this is nationstates, those two factors don't come into play nearly as much, so we recommend the usual heavily armored, gas guzzling, slow tanks and IFV's.

So you know, international treaties state that landlocked nations must be granted access to international waters and airspace by their neighbors. If any of your neighbors are UN nations, having a navy is still within the realm of possibility.

Thank you, what type of ratio would you recommend. My soldiers are going to operate on the Infantry Support Tank Doctrine so how many tanks should I have per Infantry soldiers. How much artillery and air support would be required to cover them. As for my Navy, Orbath City is the only populated place in Orbath. Orbath City is surrounded, first by a ring of mountains, then by a large amount of untouched forests. These forests eventually reach three and borders and one ocean border. So it sounds like having a Navy is quite important, so we could build FOBs like the border ones and underground rail lines to these bases. Does this sound like a good idea?

1) Our long range bomber fleet is composed primarily of B1b Lancers. We use them primarily in a stand off role with locally produced munitions: Air Launched Cruise Missiles, Jammer drones and decoy drones.

a) in the case of the B1b Lancers (which we got cheap) isn't this a case of if it ain't broke, don't fix it?

2) My own shipyards are nearing completion of a variation on the Japanese Self Defense Force 13500t class DDH (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13500t_class_DDH) I will be rolling out a total of 10 in the first batch. A 2nd batch depends on naval needs at the time. What makes this ship very special is that it combines a potent ASW platform with up to 11 helicopters on a destroyer hull. :eek:

My version will vary from the Japanese design by foregoing the torpedo tubes in favor of expanded 32 cell VLT launched ASROC and SAMs. I anticipate that this class will make a formidable escort on the mid to outer ring of task forces or convoys.

a) Would you like to list this class for sale (for a small royalty per hull :) )? I can put together its specs of the modified version and supply a ~photo.


3) The Alaska II battle cruiser design that I pitched to you is on ice for now.

a) is it a worth building a big, fast 30,000 ton battlecruiser to serve in the role that I suggested (heavy naval gunfire to support Marines ashore, powerful escort for convoys/task forces and a command vessel)?

b) could you suggest a possible alternative?


4) As far as tactical strike aircraft, I am using a mixture of Tornados, A-10s and F-111s (paired with EF-111 Ravens). Do you have any suggestions for a good ground-pounder?

For a nation of your size, you have a large navy. To put it into perspective, your military budget is not quite twice as large as the USA’s. They typically keep 8-10 operational aircraft carriers. You have 27. We recommend scaling back a little bit. The Nimitz Class carriers could be mothballed, and only be brought out by your reserves in times of war. We also recommend decommissioning your Russian ships so you don’t have to bother with supplying you fleets with both Russian and Western ammunition. However, you fleet seems pretty well rounded. We like the fact you seem to have invested heavily in air power and missile platforms.

When it comes to tanks, patrol vehicles, and infantry fighting vehicles; we recommend picking two of everything (one tracked and one wheeled), and sticking to them. Right now, you have three tracked main battle tanks. We recommend picking one, and phasing the other two out over time. The Brutus is essentially your wheeled tank, so stick with it. We also recommend that you choose between the Warrior and Mongoose tracked infantry fighting vehicles, and phase out the other. It is possible that you could benefit from having more anti-air units, but it is hard to say as both the Terrier and Mammoth can be configured for that role.

Should you mothball your Nimitz Class carriers as we recommended, you will have some extra F/A-18 Super Hornets to add to your air force. Some other aircraft should probably be phased out as well, but those should be first on your list. Your air force is in desperate need of transports. Orbath, your proposed tunnel/railway sounds promising. Something like that would be a huge asset. However, if there is a great distance between your nation and the nearest coast, the expenses involved might curb our enthusiasm for such a project. If that is the case, we recommend building a number of ordinary railroads. Ideally, these railroads would not all pass through the same nation.

Unfortunately, I cannot give you a ratio of vehicles to men that would be good for all occasions. The more men you have in your military, the fewer vehicles you will have to go around. Also, the needs of different militaries are a factor. For instance, the US has a relatively small number of men for the amount of money they spend on their military. As a result, they have an abundance of good equipment including vehicles. This suits them well, as their military travels to a lot of places, and requires mobility. North Korea is the exact opposite. They have an insane number of soldiers for the amount of money they put into their military. As a result, their mobility is greatly limited because they simply can’t afford the means to transport all the personnel they have. However, this is not a big issue for them because they just station their troops along their southern border, and rarely move them.

Phalynx, based on your recent purchases, it seems like you have a pretty good idea what we recommend for new nations. Your next few purchases should probably include some ground assault vehicles, helicopters, aircraft, and perhaps some coastal patrol vessels.

Crystal Mountains, the Lancer is a perfectly good bomber in our estimation. There are better bombers out there, but we feel the Lancer is a good value. However, we do not recommend using the Lancer exclusively. Essentially, our opinion is that you shouldn’t get rid of your Lancers as they are perfectly serviceable. However, if you have so many Lancers that their upkeep is preventing you from introducing new bombers to your air force, we recommend mothballing some.

Regarding the B-2 Spirits… It seems to use that Spirit’s big advantage is their stealth, which as you pointed out is wasted in most NS wars. Having a few B-2’s laying around won’t hurt you, but I can’t say I would recommend buying them in large numbers.

Regarding your new destroyer design… Once you are finished, I’d be happy to take a look at it. If it looks like something I think people will want to buy, I’d be more than willing to sell it and give you credit for your effort along with a cut of the profit. Regarding the Alaska II… there are plenty of nations out there that like their warships to have big guns. Personally, I like my ships to carry aircraft and missiles. Faxanavia, we would be willing to sell you ICBM's without nuclear warheads. However, based on your request, we get the feeling you have a nuclear submarine you wish to arm. If that is the case, we recommend arming your submarine with cruise missiles. An Ohio Class Nuclear submarine can be armed with 24 Trident Missiles or 154 Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. If you don't have nukes, the cruise missiles seem more sensible to us. You can carry more, and launching ICBM's is a good way to get your nation nuked as the person you are launching at has no way to tell what payload your Tridents are carrying. When you bought your 3x3 SLAMRAAM Missile Battery, it included nine SLAMRAAM missiles. SLAMRAAM's are surface launched AIM-120 anti-aircraft missiles. These are excellent missiles designed to destroy enemy aircraft at a long range. The "D" model has a range of 112 miles, and has a very high hit rate.

While the SLAMRAAM battery is very good for air defense, it is not able to use any types of missiles other than the AIM-120.

Super Lynx is a naval utility helicopter. It can transport men, tow a sonar array, launch torpedoes, drop depth charges, fire anti-ship missiles, or even be used as a tank buster.

CH-53 Sea Stallion is a heavy lift naval helicopter. It is used to transport men, perform medical evacuations, haul heavy equipment, dowse fires, and perform search and rescue missions.

UH-60 Black Hawk is designated as the Sea Hawk by most navies. The naval versions are used to tow sonar arrays, transport men, perform medical evacuations, reposition artillery, perform search and rescue ops, lay mines, fire anti-ship and anti-tank missiles, and launch torpedos.
