NASA announces an ambitious plan of communications satellite launches this year out of the Southern Cross Space Flight Center, nearly a dozen in all and routine operations will continue for the years ahead. This network of satellites will serve the needs of Africa, the Indian Ocean, Australasia and the South Pacific.
Similar launches in California and Florida will serve North America and provide coverage for Russia eventually as well.
In addition, 4 Mercury orbital missions are planned for 1955, and work on the new Gemini spacecraft has begun.

US Mercury missions 1955
1st mission - March 1955, 14 orbits, Geoff Fiskin (RAAF) 1st Australian in space
2nd mission - April 1955, 18 orbits, Scott Carpenter (USN), overshot landing area but was recovered safely
3rd mission - May 1955, 23 orbits, Robert McNair (RCAF), 1st Canadian in space
4th mission - June 1955, 25 orbits, Roger Healy (USAF)
5th mission -- July 1955, 30 orbits, Gordon Cooper (USAF), problems with spacecraft force a manual reentry. Final Mercury flight of the series.
Astronaut Deke Slayton is grounded due to medical problem.
Meanwhile, work on the X-20 begins, the Gemini project is well underway, and the X-15 obital test series is readied for next year.
Less successful are the Ranger series of lunar probes. 3 out of 6 malfunction (1 destroyed in flight, one failed to reach seperation and burned up in reentry and 1 missed the moon due to an engine malfunction). However 3 lunar missions manage to reach the Moon and land successfully.

yes, which the US acquired in this game during the First Great War (1905) and its had status as a US Territory (pre condition to statehood) since before the Third Great War
Polynesia has enough of an economy to form a state, but the Central Pacific Islands just aren't big enough or populated enough yet. They will be offered statehood later however.

The Brazilian Government comes to the USA with a request.
Brazil recognizes the importance of space exploration and its uses; therefore, Brazil asks to USA if they could join in on the NASA space program (pay points every year). Brazil and America are already working together on an ethanol program and see this just as another way to expand our relationships. Also, the need for a satellite network is dire. We ask that America deploy a group of satellites for Brazil in part of the combined effort (ill pay of course for that if you agree). Moreover, Brazil would like to invite the American Air force to build a War college in Brazil in order to produce officers with American training. This will of course be paid for by the Brazilian government. This concludes Brazil's request and we hope that our two great nations will continue to make progress in the world.

Eisenhower says no, but a new President is taking office in January 1957.. perhaps he will have a different opinion.
Jerk... now I really sympathize with Kruschev...

The US and Canadian governments announce that the Alaskan Highway, connecting Fairbanks to Edmunton and from there the rest of North America will be completed in the summer of 1957.
This project is in conjuction with the Interstate Highway system, which many consider one of the greatest legacies of the Eisenhower Administration.

NASA announces that 4 Americans, 2 Colombians, 1 Canadian and 1 Australian will be flying the 4 Gemini missions this year, and 3 Americans and 1 South African will be flying the X15C orbital missions.
NASA also announces that continued unmanned missions to the Moon are planned as are the first missions to orbit Mars and Venus.

The US and Russians are in talks (ooc, because I forgot about that). Figure technology transfer to build a launch facility is a good idea, although where to build it is tough. Star City is in the Central Asian Republic after all.
Figure NASA is training some Russian astronauts for Gemini missions next year and maybe Apollo and Manned Labratory missions
Edmunton? You have insulted my Canadian-ess-ness! Also, I can't see much industry in Thunder Bay... more like Victoria, St Johns, Toronto, Montreal (A biggie), Quebec City, Edmonton, Calgary, and possibly some other Maritime City. Ever been to Thunder Bay... not exactly the location for large quantities of Canada's industry!

it is however where the Alcan Highway starts and it ends in Dawson. Thunder Bay by the way is a rather important port of exit for Canadian iron ore on its way to the smelters of the US Midwest, East Coast and the Canadian steel industry

The RAF enquires of the US Department of Defence if it might be permitted to purchase one unit of Avrop Arrows to evaluate and provide a strong deterrent to foreign forces. It is hoped that this new fighter might be able to cover the almost entire British Empire with a quick response time. Hopefully the purchase of these outstanding aircraft will provide more support amongst critics of a potential new and stronger alliance.
Sorry, just making sure you hadn't missed this. In case I need to change my builds for this year. Cheers.

(This is assuming Kennedy is inaugurated. They made that amendment didn't they? Speaking of which, have you done all of the amendments up to now?)
The Luftwaffe congratulates the President on his inauguration, and also petitions the government to purchase 2 E121 units.

You can build your own spy or AWACS planes- I remember GB or Lesser Ribenia posting somewhere that any 4 engined bomber can be converted into E121 quality spy / AWACS plane, and a 2 engined bomber can be likewise converted to S-1 quality.
GB, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Greetings,
The French President conveys his congratulations to the newly elected president Kennedy and hopes that both our countries prosper through their wise leaderships.
He wishes to also inquire over the possibility of the French government to replace their outdated Aerial Transport Units with the C124 Globemaster.

The C124 is no longer in production and the airframes that remain are being kept in reserve. However, the C130 is available for foreign sales and the US State Department points out that it is the principal transport of the USAF.

The South African Airforce petitions the United States for purchase of a unit of C130 transports. The recent Anglo-American operation in Portugal (on which the entire South African military establishment congratulates the United States) has made clear the fact that airborne forces will play a large role in future conflict; as such, the government in Pretoria has made it imperative that the SAAF's aging and obsolete DC4s be replaced at the earliest possible time.
OOC: I'll give you the points in my next build, if you like.

just assume money changes hands between the South African government and Lockheed Corporation. In other words, you buy the units (spend your points) but the US government doesn't get any points.

In the first 100 days of the Kennedy Administration, several bills reach Congress. (all pass)
The Voting Rights Act
Increased funding for NASA
Committment to send a man to the moon within 12 years
A National Transportation Project aimed at improving rail and air service to all major cities (in order to reduce dependence on automobiles and prevent a need to import oil in quantity... thanks to the first oil shock for that one)
Creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and passage of the Clean Air and Water Act
Statehood bills for Hawaii, Alaska, Polynesia and Puerto Rico (which would give the Democrats 6 Senators and the Republicans 2)
The Marshal, Caroline, and Marianas Islands each get Territorial status.
Kenney then announces plans to visit several cities in the FNS, Australasia, the Philippines, Japan, and Canada in the next year.
Meanwhile, the new Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, goes to Australasia to continue previously secret discussions.

A major development in the US
http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=10901449#post10901449
In other news, the US carefully examines the lessons from Portugal as well as the Australian/Chinese wargames. The helicopter proves to be a great success, and the new UH1, which will reach frontline service beginning in 1958, will provide the airframe needed for the ideas the Army is considering for creating air mobile divisions built around armed helicopters, transport helicopters and well trained light infantry.
The success Special Forces groups are having in training Brazilian troops and providing liasion officers for them is also viewed highly favorably.
Meanwhile, the Air Force gets out of the space business in a direct role and hands over its programs to the new Alliance Space Force.

The newly renamed Alliance Space Force conducts 4 Gemini flights, the first missions where 2 men go to orbit aboard the same spacecraft. On the 4th flight, the ASF also conducts its first space walk, as astronaut Roger Chaffee leaves the Gemini spacecraft for a few minutes.
Less successful are several unmanned shots to the moon and Mars, but the ASF does successfully reach the orbit of Venus twice, radioing back the first data from that world.
Due to problems, the X15 flights planned for 1957 are postponed.
