In Washington, J Edgar Hoover is suddenly without a job. A gang war in New York City that clearly demonstrates that the alleged Mafia, in spite of Hoovers' denials, clearly exists, along with the arrest of several Union spies by the New York and Washington Police working with the US Secret Service is enough to finish him, especially when information regarding his liaisons with other men are made available to FDR.

The FBI is made a subdepartment of the US Marshals Service, while the Secret Service is given a larger role with the Marshals service in handling organized crime and counter espionage. A friend of Roosevelts, Bill Donovan, is given instructions to form a new agency as well. The Office of Strategic Services. Other than its title, little else is known about its function or mission. Roosevelt also orders the Navy and Army Departments to share codebreaking efforts and the National Security Agency is created at Fort Meade. This too is highly secret.

"Normal" diplomatic relations (i.e., embassy staff) are quietly restored within a few weeks, although cultural exchange programs are henceforth continued through non-governmental organizations. Those so-called "Union spies" are declared to be nothing of the sort, of course, and the cases are subsequently ignored.

The obnoxious requirement that American citizens travelling in the Union be accompanied at all times by a government minder is dropped even more quickly, when it becomes obvious to the Agenturnaja that virtually all American citizens travelling freely in the Union are actually loyal Communists (except for the spies, of course - but we know about those). Trade links are also restored, not that they were particularly critical to either state.

Secret communication to the United States
From: Sovereign Republic of China

Greetings.

We would like to open discussions on how to improve our relationship, open trade, and perhaps even some treaties. We would like to mend our fences, considering that China is finally a democratic society, where the people have their say.

I truly believe it is time for us to look toward to a better future together, as two great democratic nations that believe in freedom of speech, economy, and most importantly, of life.

Thank you and go in peace,
Prime Minister Song Jiaoren

Military attachés in both Damascus and Washington will inform the relevant officials that the Union has no intention of escalating its commitment of personnel to the counter-insurgency in the MEU – in fact, exactly the opposite. Air strikes will be conducted against rebel-held targets at Karbala and An-Nasiriyah due to domestic political pressures, and that is where President Kirov wants the Union’s involvement to end, to the point of "advising" Union citizens operating in the MEU to withdraw (i.e., pull out our troops) and let the Peoples of the Middle East sort out their fate.

The Union will not negotiate on this, however.

In the US, the Voting Rights Act passes in the face of stiff opposition in the South. However, the Democrats have enough strength to ram it through, and previous work, including desegregating the armed forces and the steller war record that Black Americans had during the 2nd Great War gets it through.

Jim Crow is also doomed when desegration is ordered in the same law for all public transportation and schools that accept Federal money. As this is nearly all of them, the South is forced to follow the law. A Supreme Court case also dooms Seperate but Equal.

Top-Secret message to the United States
From: Sovereign Republic of China

Greetings, friend.

I have been considering setting up a National Security organization, to combat any future rebellious sentiment, dissaude potential terrorists or insurgents, and discover dis-loyal or treasonous personnel within the Chinese government and military. I have heard that the United States has such an organization in place, the Federal Bureau of Invesigation (FBI). In addition, your people also employ a special organization to protect important governmental leaders, which I believe you call the "Secret Service".

I was wondering whether your people would support helping China form its own "FBI" and "Secret Service" organizations to preserve our government and military from internal threats, assassins, dis-loyal officials, and the such.

Thank you and go in peace.

When news of the planned massive buildup of the Union Navy hits Washington, the Republicans and Conservative Democrats immediately demand that the US respond. Roosevelt too is troubled, and with the war in Asia breaking out not far from US Allies and territory, he decides to act.

On March 5, the President declares a state of National Emergency. The National Guard and Reserves are federalized immediately. In addition, in secret, he gets permission from Congress for the Marshal Service and OSS to make determined efforts to root out Union spies in the United States, and wire taps and breakins are authorized.

Finally, a massive defense appropriation supplimental bill hits Congress (the US declares National Effort via deficit spending) and passes easily.

Millions take the streets in joy as the announcement that the Soviet Army has agreed to a Cease Fire and is prepared to completely and unconditionally surrender to US and LTA forces sweeps the nation. In other parts of the country, the areas that surround Boston and St. Louis, people feel only numbness.

Only the veteran battleship Maryland survives (and becomes a war memorial at Annapolis, alongside the veteran aircraft carrier Enterprise (both of which are national war memorials. The surrender of Japan was taken aboard the Enterprise, while the battleship Maryland was the flagship for the invasion of the Ukraine, the largest amphibious operation of the war).

China was wondering if the United States would be willing to work together with China in the rebuilding of the Chinese infrastructure? China is willing to offer multi-billion deals to Brown+Root construction as well as various other American companies in all fields such as automobiles, electronics, fishing, manufacturing, and so forth. Hopefully the American people will be able to help China rebuild a stronger and much more resilient nation from the ashes of the Third World War.

Please let us know your decision.

After a fierce debate, the Alaska class is killed by the Truman Administration so that the Air Force can have more money for bomber research. This angers a number of Admirals, and several resign or are forced into retirement. (ooc, historical reference, Revolt of the Admirals 1948)

A proposed larger version of the Lexington class heavy carrier is also cancelled for now, as is a request for more submarines. Truman points out that at the moment the Navy doesn't really have an enemy to use those submarines against. However, the St. Louis class cruisers and Nautilus are approved (the Nautilus mainly as a test bed), but a request for an additional 12 St. Louis class cruisers is not approved (above the initial 12)

cost: 4 points, maintenance .25 points build time 1 year.
Mission: essentially an escort group command ship, with 20 planned, sufficient to provide command ships for every destroyer squadron of 5 destroyers
Planned: Helena, Minot, Richmond, Fargo, Anchorage, Akron, New Bedford, Annapolis, Providence, Phoenix, Nashville, Pensacola, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Arlington, Augusta, Des Moines, Boise, Omaha, Raleigh,

The Canadians like the design as well, and hit up their government for 10 (Ottowa, Halifax, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Regina, Montreal, Quebec, St. John, Calgary, Edmonton)

This time Congress overrides Truman's objections, and they get included in the 1946 Defense Bill. The Canadians have similar luck.

Neither are expected to fly before 1947.

Meanwhile, over Muroc Dry Lake, a jet version of the B35, the B49, crashes, killing its pilot, Major Edwards. Soon after the airbase is renamed Edwards Air Force Base in his honor.

Soon after that, NASA sets up shop there, as well as at the Alamgordo Missile Range and at Langley Air Force Base. Flight tests of improved versions of Union rockets captured during the war begin, and the outer edge of the atmosphere is reached.

OOC: What's the difference between Liners and regular shipping?

Barkley is Vice President, major timeline difference is that he is in office a few years early.

Liners are faster then regular shipping, and are useful for moving troops from say San Francisco to Australia and back in 1 2-month turn. However in peacetime, they don't generate commerce points (they could but they are small units compared to shipping units, only about 100,000 tons for 2 liners compared to 500,000 tons of shipping for a shipping unit)

Whoah- how or when did the White House turn into a "slummy" place?

The White House was actually structurally unsafe by 1945 and was pretty much rebuilt completely from the inside out. Among the features added were bombshelters, a swimming pool, the famous Rose Garden, modern plumbing and electrical systems, modern phone systems etc. This occured historically 1946 -51. Truman was one of only two US Presidents (Washington is the other) who lived most of his term not in the White House (Truman lived in the Blair House, which is now the home of US Vice Presidents).

April 15, 1946
John Peter Krauss, who later turns out to have been a member of the Communist Party and now deranged, shoots his way into the Blair House, killing 1 uniformed and 1 plain clothes officer and shoots Harry S. Truman as he comes to the door of his office to investigate. Krauss, and his partners, Peter Paul Griffith and Patrick David Murphy are then killed, but Truman dies later that night from a gunshot wound to his chest.

Britain would be glad to receive such scientific aid from our allies, we would be glad to participate in a research exchange regarding Hydrogen Super Bombs. We would of course not share this technology with anyone. Though you should know that we have already made a promise to share British conventional nuclear weapons with Australia in exchange for testing sites.

OOC: As I understand it this would result in Britain getting Hydrogen bombs when the USA does (at the end of 1948) which would be about a year before Britain finishes it's "homegrown" conventional bomb research. In the election coming up in 1948, President Barkley announces that he doesn't intend to seek reelection, citing age and health concerns.

The Democrats begin jockeying for position for the nomination, with Estes Kefauver and W. Aeverell Harriman being the leading contenders.

Meanwhile, the Republicans also maneuver, with Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and Thomas Dewey leading the pack.

The election is a landslide as Eisenhower's immense charm and popularity overwhelms Kevauver.

Douglas MacArthur goes into a quit retirement, finished politically.

The United States government organizes Polynesia (ooc French Polynesia in the real world) into a Territory for eventual statehood, and also elections are held in Puerto Rico toward that eventual goal as well.

The smaller island territories are organized the Territory of Micronesia, and the island of Truk is the territorial capital. The first Territorial elections are held and a Guamanian is elected as territorial governor.

Statehood is placed on the ballot for the 1952 elections for Puerto Rico, Polynesia, Hawaii and Alaska.

important information

Also, remember, the US owns all islands north of the Equator in the Pacific (the Marshal, Caroline, Palau, Marinas Islands groups) plus the all of what is called French Polynesia in the real world. Plus Puerto Rico, Alaska and Hawaii, and all three of those, plus Polynesia are up for statehood.

Figure the US will likely stay isolationist for a while, and limit its involvement in world affairs to foreign aid, a strong military, and UN activities.

to assist, I will do US builds for 1950 this weekend, and if you need me too, continue to do so until a player is found or needed.

If you could do builds, that would help me tremendously.

Also, I was thinking of limiting the US's activities to the Western Hemisphere and occasional use of the Marines for UN activities. Other than that, I was going to have the US cower beneith the might of German... I mean, stay neutral.

don't forget, the US and Australia essentially own the Pacific, so assume that is were 3/4 US Navy is located in peacetime, in times of crisis, 50% would be in the Atlantic.

The Eisenhower Administration was the last time the US had a balanced budget, so to reflect that, expect reduced US spending for the next 8 years (and huge economic growth)

even with that, a big chunk is available for investment in the Third World (and would be invested in production centers in Africa, Central America, the Caribbean and the Philippines)

The Menzies Administration inquires about the possibility of replacing Australia's wing of F4U Corsairs with the AD1 Skyraider.

the US government immediately approves the deal, (cost is essentially free in game terms as its handled by your maintenance costs in this case)

The US also offers the Australians the option of buying the F101A long range fighter and F101B all weather fighter, as well as the F105 light bomber and A4 Skyhawk light bomber.

In other news, the C130 begins its pre acceptance testing by the US Air Force as does the KC135 (the tanker version of the Boeing 707)

Australia immediately accepts the generous offer and sends its thanks to Washington. The plan would be to switch one F4U wing to AD1's; change a mosquito light bomber to F105's and begin switching from Hawker Hunters to F101s. How much do I need to pay in game terms?

just the normal price .. maintenance doesn't automatically upgrade aircraft types any longer at this tech level (although it does provide for improvements like better radars and missiles for example as time moves on)

The US military attache covertly and discretely warns the Brazilian military that a coup would be frowned upon.

US Secretary of State,

I, General Pereira da Costa, would like to inform you that there has indeed been a military coup in Brazil. On the other hand, I would hope that you would tell your government that this was for the good of Brazils people. The former "president" was embezzling government funds for his own gain. I hope that the US govenment would help in this endeavor. I understand that this is not the nature of the US government to aid in the overthrow of a govenment, but when one was as corrupt as this one, I believe any measures are necessary. I would also like to inform your government that I have no intention to hold power but to form a civilian Republic government and make a new constitution similar to the US as soon as this is over, which will be very soon.

I understand that this is not the nature of the US government to aid in the overthrow of a govenment, but when one was as corrupt as this one, I believe any measures are necessary. I would also like to inform your government that I have no intention to hold power but to form a civilian Republic government and make a new constitution similar to the US as soon as this is over, which will be very soon.

the 15th Air Force, based in Russia, shifts the 48th Fighter Wing (F101A), and 52nd Bomb Wing (B57) to Samarkand. Soon after, the 9th Refueling Wing (KC97) is shifted from the Philippines to Samarkand as well. Also shifted are a flight of EB47 surviellence aircraft (now based at Sverdlovsk) and the US 2nd Cavalry Regiment (an armored brigade) is sent by rail to Samarkand as well.

US B52s based out of the US begin making training flights over the North Pole to Central Asia and back home again.

The US will cheerfully exercise with the Russians. Of particular interest is Russian practice interceptions of B52s and B47s, and US / Russian experiments with helicopters and vertical envelopment

the US is ok with the sale, although your experts probably think the Yak 25 interceptor is more suitable for Russian conditions (longer range and is all weather capable, while the Corsair is a good air superiority fighter but not really a great interceptor as it isn't all weather)

The US Army likes the Russian BTR type armored personnel carriers that are being experimented with, while the Russians like the M113 design which is being tested. However, the wide variety of Russian mortars and multiple rocket launchers, and the Russian design for the Ribbon Bridge are all highly impressive, as is the RPG.

Porsche is putting out some really excellent sports cars and making lots of money selling Volkswagons... in other words, not much in the way of tanks. Your interceptor should show up the same time as the Canadian Arrow and US Phantom (1954 or later). Joint exercises are a good idea though, and US and FNS exercises in the South Atlantic, as well as establishing a joint base at McMurdo Sound are excellent ideas, with a staging base at Port Stanley (Falklands) .. the US will send Admiral Byrd and a fleet carrier to support the operation, along with lots of helicopters and transport aircraft.

NASA launches its first Explorer mission (Explorer I) from the Goddard Space Launch Center (real life Cape Kennedy) on January 14, 1952. Sadly, a problem develops and the range safety officer is forced to destroy the rocket over the Atlantic.

Nearly 4 months go by before the next mission, and Explorer II is successful on May 12. The next 2 missions, Explorer III and IV are failures, both detonating over the Atlantic shortly after launch, but Explorer V and VI are successful.

Meanwhile, over the California Desert, on May 17, Air Force Test Pilot Chuck Yeager flys the X-15 to an altitude of 90 kilometers, and another mission in June by NASA pilot Scott Crossfield reaches 98 kilometers. On July 12, Yeager takes the X-15 to 101 kilometers, officially reaching sufficient altitude to be considered space flight. Another misson on September 21 by Scott Crossfield reaches 105 kilometers.

the US Defense Department shuffles forces around. The 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment is sent home to California for desert training and to act as a strategic reserve (sent to Fort Irwin, the modern day National Training Center for the Army). The 15th Air Force also leaves Russia and is moved to Iceland and Greenland. The 14th Air Force leaves Japan, with most of its units going to the Philippines and Guam. The Army also shifts an infantry division from Washington (state) to Iceland.

With those redeployments, the last American combat forces are gone from Japan and Russia (except for a few advisors in Russia). The US does keep open its air bases at Irkutsk, Sapporo and Okinawa (for frequent training missions and maneuvers with local Russian and Japanese forces)

When asked about the move, the President remarks that North Asia has become peaceful since the Third Great War, and American forces are not needed in the region for stability, while other parts of the world are more dangerous and more likely to need deployment of US forces.

OOC: More out of curiosity then in-game reasons, what is the state of Boston at this point? How much was rebuilt?

both St. Louis and Boston were rebuilt. In game terms, all factories were rebuilt. In addition, the St. Louis Arch was rebuilt, and Harry S. Truman and his wife and mother are buried under the midpoint of it, along with the bodies and ashes of all of those killed in the attack (Truman was cremated and his ashes mixed in with them as his wife and mother were killed in the attack).

The Boston Common Memorial is the principal memorial in Boston and a library archiving the names of every American killed by the atomic and biological weapons attacks during the Third World War is located there. The remainder of the Common holds the mass graves of the unidentified dead.

The US government covertly approaches Australia and South Africa about joining in with the US in the space age. The US wants tracking stations in Africa, Australia and Australian controlled Oceania, and to build a launch facility near Townsville, Australia and another facility near Capetown (for South Polar launches and equatorial launches).

If both nations provide 2 points a year, then Australian and South African personnel will be trained by the US and fly along with US astronauts once space missions begin.

US Space efforts 1953

Cape Canaveral (Goddard Space Flight Center) Florida
The Mercury program begins, although things do not start off well. The first of five unmanned flights begins well, but then the craft fails to separate from its booster and breaks up during reentry. The 2nd flight is even less successful, as an engine fails on the 2nd stage, and the range safety officer is forced to explode it over the Atlantic. The third and fourth missions however are complete successes, and for the 5th mission a chimpanzee named Ham is placed aboard. The subsequent explosion of the rocket just as it lifts off, which damages the pad and ends poor Ham’s life is a bit of an embarrassment.

Muroc Dry Lake (Edwards Flight Test Center) California
6 X-15 missions are carried out over the year and all are successful, with all 5 reaching the 50 mile limit and beyond (the edge of space). The 6th mission in 1953, on September 2, results in the first South African in space. (Squadron Leader "Jannie" Blaauw, SAF)
(other astronauts that year include Chuck Yeager and Scott Crossfield again, as well as Joseph Walker, Michael Adams, and Neil Armstrong)

Vandenburg AFB
The USAF conducts tests of the Titan missile, including 2 tests to launch satellites into space. Both missions are successful (ooc, the Titan is still used today for heavy vehicles and provided the basis of the Delta rocket still used as well)

The USAF also launches 3 satellites from Vandenburg. However the first fails to achieve orbit and disintegrates during reentry, but the second mission achieves orbit proving that recon satellites are useful when it reenters and is successfully picked up over the Pacific by a C130 retrieval aircraft in flight. The third mission however is a catastrophic failure as the rocket lifts off but three engines fail and the rocket falls back on the pad, exploding.

Townsville Launch Center
NASA launches 2 Pioneer Lunar Flyby robot spacecraft successfully from the Australian facility, and the pictures transmitted back are released to the world.

US space efforts 1954
Mercury Missions (Goddard Space Flight Center Florida)
Alan Shepherd, first US orbital flight, March 23, 1954 (6 orbits)

Anthony Nelson, booster failure in second stage on April 2, Captain Nelson ejects and is later picked up not far from Bermuda by helicopters from the USS Lexington

(Mercury Spacecraft are equipped with emergency rockets to allow for safe ejection during boost phase of flight)

John Glenn, 10 orbits, May 3, 1954

Nikolay Sutyagin, 12 orbits, May 26, 1954 (first Russian in space)

8 missions are planned for 1955, including first trips to space for an Australian and Canadian astronaut.

Meanwhile, out of the Southern Cross Space Launch facility
NASA sends 3 probes to the Moon, and the second launch on July 4 detonating high over Australia (thus providing Australian newspapers wonderful material for editiorial cartoons). The other two missions do successfully make hard landings on the Moon and valuable scientific data is beamed back to Earth.

US Space Flight Center Vandenberg is busy all year as over a dozen satellite missions are launched (and most reach orbit successfully).

Meanwhile, test flights of the X-15 continue over Edwards, and several suborbital missions occur but the program is not ready for orbital flight as of yet due to delays in the 3rd generation rocket engines needed for the flight.

Also at Vandenburg and Edwards, various propulsion experiments are conducted and Freeman Dyson theorizes that space flight using nuclear propulsion might be possible.
