That is the role of the auxiliaries, should the Romans get any crazy ideas the auxiliaries would withdraw their support leaving them to a very gruesome fate by any long-ranged weapons. The thought of getting killed by their opponent (coupled with their opponent being right in their faces) would be a pretty good incentive.
Plus good 'ol survival of the 'fittest' i.e. most loyal will route out those who are too unmotivated to fight, leaving only the best (if any at all)

These *are* Romans though- they've got pride in the state, and they're willing to die for it, even if it means gruesomely. Mind you, these aren't ex-soldiers that were captured, so I'm not sure if you'd get the kind that would be fiercely loyal to Rome (there might even be a few who wouldn't like the Roman Government at all). Still, they could sabotage any plan by simply "not being useful", and I don't see the stopgap to that.

We would avoid using them obviously against their homeland, as for their condition it reminds me a bit of the gladiators' condition.
I didn't take the entire Roman populace and throw 'em in the military, most are in the fields harvesting. These are the most 'rowdy' i.e. energetic bunch (believe I stated somewhere here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10510586&postcount=30)) which, despite their condition still show a bit of spark. We do have some of their families as well, although I don't know the Conglomerate would be one to threaten them, they are semi-valuable human resources. Their commanding officers might make that threat, however...
Yes, like any unit they could simply refuse to work, it's the incentives that I tried to focus on. They have the same choice as any on the battlefield, "fight or die." If they refuse to fight and somehow survive we always have decimation or other appropriatte punishments. Romans will not be used to fight Romans, and if they end up fighting Alpinians vengance could be a good motive.
In case I did not make it clearer before the Romans would be the front-line troops, and the auxiliaries which they rely on are Galbadian, along with the officers as well.

Heh. Really getting into the "scum of the Earth" thing there Bjorn with freedom-fighters. Come to think of it, it is amazing how "backward" my Roman Empire looks beside kingdoms who very squarely and rigidly believe in class division.

You've got a point on the commanding officers- Romans are told to "do as their told", and the fact they won't be fighting *against* Romans will cut down the likelihood of their rebellion. How well are these guys going to be fed? Placation should be your ultimate goal here.

Hey, I don't actually think the things the Garden is doing are good, my IC ideological sucker punches are just food for thought, I'm trying to think and write with the prejudices of someone from the Conglomerate rather than the prejudices of an American. I'm trying to RP a not completely inhumane 'bad-guy.' For the class divisions thing its a debate that's been going on for centuries. Classlessness leads to a more utilitarian and 'equitable' mediocrity, Aristocracy may be less 'humane' but allows for greatness. Trying to find a place inbetween seems to be what healthy democracies (or perhaps capitalist nations) strive for.

Considering the majority of the people are in the fields (said something like that in 'The Mitzel Conglomerate') and starting the first round of crop-rotation I'm making sure the army gets well fed. Been trying to RP their integration, no matter how unsuccessful it may be. The next generations will be much less problematic I hope. If you'd like to RP their reaction to their new environment you're more than welcome to.

My perspective was not on the basis of "good" or "bad"- it was one simply based on observation. Personally, I too would disagree wholeheartedly with what the Garden is doing, but I'm trying to look at the situation in an objective, observational manner- it's the historian in me.

Thus, observationally I saw that the Romans were the only society on Pescium that believed in equality, human rights and liberty, so they could very well seem "backward" to the people already established on the continent (such as Mitzel, Alpina and Ceradin, who all had class-based systems). The Roman Empire is, of course, more capitalist than socialist so it too has a "class-system" too, but here it's not as pronounced and it's not fervently fought for as in the other societies on Pescium. The "modern" Roman may seem off the mark with their ancient brethren- who were actually quite conservative- but if you read the ancient texts, you'd see they value a lot of the same things we do like fairness and equality, plus the main Roman value- honour- today extends to human and civil rights, and the Romans did have their fair share of democratic institutions (Tribune of the Plebs, Comitia Centuriata, etc.). The interpretations were just different then.

Bold emphasis = mine.

You're forgetting Sharina, a society governed by a blend of democracy and sciences. ;)

As for other stuff, I should finish my language thing by this weekend or next week as I pretty much have the whole week off. I don't have any work to do seeing as its a major testing thing going on in the schools so no faculty will be able to work with me on the website stuff (TLS and Elephantum should know what I'm talking about- the MCAS testing).

Okay. Updated the Cordensa map.

Borman Empire: Scaled down your claims since I can only see two new claims to your territory since the last update as opposed to three (which what I'm seeing in the new map). If you can show me the third claim do so and I'll change the map accordingly.

EDIT- Also, when you're making your own updates, use the map I just uploaded and go from there. The ones you've been using have the claim spots that I had removed earlier.

What was the date of the last update?

I think you did. However, I'm still seeing a few discrepancies- on your new map there's clearly a few points that I think seem to be from an unrequested "third" expansion, especially in the top corner where there's three filled boxes. Overall, there's five blank squares (which makes sense that's the official status), so the filled boxes are perplexing.

Well seeing as I had three weeks of espansion to re-do since vacation, I wanted to do it fast and not meticulous and slow like usual, so I just pasted boxes where they would fit rather than fill out areas and end up with weird shaped boxes, hence the odd shaped corners and gaps that have yet to be filled in when they were before. Those three boxes were part of an expansion I re-did.

Okay, well, I met you halfway and used the re-did map. I realized that you *had* asked for an expansion without posting a map, and that I think it's not fair to you to not give it to you since a map is not necessary when making claims- a request is.

Strangely enough as a chemist I not only know how to make crystal meth, but also know how to make large ammounts of both mustard and chlorine gas (already made chlorine actually, nearly killed myself). Enjoy that game Sharina, one of the greatest, if not greatest ever created.

Bjornya...

The pyramid device can translate your Al Bhed language into Sharinan language and vice versa. Think of it as an "universal translator" of sorts- I remember watching on Discovery Channel a few months ago that we actually are beginning to build "true" universal translators, as in scanning any printed languages (books, banners, TV screens, etc.) and spoken languages (people talking) then translate them into English and do vice versa translating the English speaker / writer / text into the foreign language.

So our IC characters can speak normally to each other as long as the pyramid device is near them. Eventually, I hope to be able to have my people IC'ly learn how to speak and read Al Bhed so that there won't be need for the "Translator Pyramid".

Basically what happened was that a computer took several samples of your Al Bhed language and ran it through billions of possible language schematics and potential "match-ups" until a correct schematic was reached. Then the translator pyramid "downloads" the schematic and then both parties can speak normally without needing to stumble around.

As for FF 7, I'm playing it right now. I just got out of Midgar and I'm in the Mythril Mines, on my way to Fort Condor and Junon. I'm thinking of pumping my characters up a bit so that they can learn Midgar Zolom's Beta attack on the "Enemy Skill" Materia which should make the next few areas somewhat easier for me.

When was the last time you played FF 7?

Still a junior at CLU, might go to Amgen. Right now I'm just a camp counselor, but really enjoy it. My sister is a teacher, and might end up following her footsteps.

What company does your dad work for? Might know, but still getting familiar with the field.

Oh right. I remember you're still a student- I got confused (I remember you once told Hawdawg how easy it was to go from a liberal college student to a conservative parent once you have kids). CLU...what's it stand for? (somehow, you'll tell me and I'll think "I should have known!")

He used to be with Royal Plastics (specifically Reagens Canada), then Reagens USA- he was in Houston for a while (in fact, my mom and dad were supposed to be moving there and I was supposed to be moving to Toronto then the job fell through so now I need to move out on my own). Now he teaches Chemistry at Georgian College in Barrie.

Last time I played FFVII? Man... like soph/junior year of High School. And I perfected it, like I did with every FF. Every weapon, accessory, item, materia not only acquired but maxed. I spent over 100 hours on it, must've been like 120-150 cuz I think the game stopped timing after 99 hours...

Every character level I maxed out at the crashed underwater submarine, and maxed character stats with the items you can morph the creatures into down there. I defeated every weapon, including the nearly impossible ULTIMA (highlight of my Videogaming career)

Yeah, I lived FFVII, I remember more about that game than the entire ciricullum at my high school, it was that good.

Oh yeah, I have kids but they aren't mine, lol. I have so much training, gonna be the best damn parent ever! Now, if only I knew how to make kids...

CLU= California Lutheran University: Small private university in So. Cal. As usual the faculty is rather liberal, but have a respect and knowledge of conservative thought not only via religious refernces but suprisingly political too (reading Allan Bloom at the moment, who I'm sure I would not have heard much of elsewhere) Anyway..

Chemistry professors kick ass, and I bet you're glad you didn't have to move to Texas (or?)

Ultima = impossible? How so?

For me, Ruby was the hardest for me, followed by Emerald. Ruby weapon kept knocking out my strongest characters and then massacring the single character left after he "quicksanded" my other 2 characters.

Emerald was hard mainly because of the damage he dealt, especially his "Aire Tam Tau" special attack that did 9999 to everybody, and as you know 9999 was the maximum health of any max'ed out character. I had to aim for luck in not having the Aire Tam attack happen.

Ultima was a wimp pushover compared to Ruby and Emerald. Even Diamond weapon was a little harder than Ultima.

Gah, my bad keep getting them mixed. Should be called Ultima cuz cooler and more intimidating name. Emerald was the one I was thinking about, underwater fight. Seriously took me an hour to finish. Ultima was simple, Ruby was tough and not worth the reward, but done anyway. I had little trouble with Ruby because of some trick, can't remember. Mimic was part of it I think. Used a similar trick with Emerald.

Kids at camp=my kids, helps me do my job much better when I claim them as my own. Not sure there's an equivalent in Canada, summer time the kids of parents who work all-day or just want them away for a while send em to day camp for bout 8-9 hours, and its up to us camp counselors to take care/entertain them. We're like teachers, without the respect or even paychecks... Still, wouldn't trade it for an internship yet.

Students here are neither liberal or conservative in my mind, just opiated. No matter how fanatical about their beliefs they are, that's just it, their fanatical or better dogmatic. On either side they've been instilled with their ideologies since birth, it is no longer a thought but an emotion and cannot be combatted normally, if at all. When confronted with the deeper philisophical issues regarding their ideals they either are confounded or betray themselves. And that's the politically active ones, a slight majority of whom are conservative. The rest are simply apathetic, the happy religious types I have little problems with unless they start interfering with our research.

And you're more than welcome to come to California. As much as I disagree rationally with my upbrining (brainwashed tolerance) I do have an admiration for the outcomes. We are a very happy and amiable people, much happier than the rest of the state's I've visited. Of course, it can easily be pushed too far, and I'm glad we have a healthy conservative economic base that somehow still holds those good ol' morals. That's another thing, we're a very liberal state but also the most powerful economically, which I did not expect but hey, I'll take it.

Hate to nitpick but you forgot to include the expansion that was supposed to occur this past week (I think I posted it last weekend or something). Here's a map of what my expansion is supposed to be like.

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/2434/condensa14my.png

As for the hard-coded RP rule, its a mixed bag, IMHO. On one hand, there's only one "active" RP in Manium as a whole, and thats our Eggerland RP. So far it looks like you, me, and Bjornya are the only ones active RP-wise. So if we say RP is required, then what will become of Hamptonshire, Praetonia, Brutix, Vastiva, Sarzonia, and so on who seem not to have RP'ed here in Manium lately?

On the other hand, we do need more Manium activity and excitement. Its hard, given that nowadays, 95% of I.I. is just "OMG! I declare war on j00! I send 1 million missiles at you! I automatically win!" then "No way! IGNORED!" crap, or storefronts or FT wank-fests. Its hard to find the RP'ers like yourself, me, and Bjornya who prefer to focus on storyline RP's and develop backgrounds, locales, culture, ways of life, and stuff that doesn't involve the I.I. version of warfare.

What to do? What to do?

What to do? What to do?

First of all, the requirement to RP out your expansions *is* already in the rules (look at the first page)- I just never specified *how*. This is meant to address that. I realize I've been lax before, because I've been hoping activity would pick up on its own, but I realize it's not so I need to do something about it. I will give leeway for time, but I do think that if you're capable of making a new claim you're capable of making a post, even if it's just a paragraph stating that a few new towns were founded.

Anyway, what do I expect? Posts could be something as mundane as building something up or as riveting as discovering oil, gold, etc. or clashing with a native population. Or- even better- finding a strange new creature/environment and having to deal with it. I don't really care what is RP'ed as long as *something* is. I'm not here to police RolePlay- I just want to see some action, that's all.

As far as Praetonia, Vastiva, Brutix, Sarzonia, etc. are- well, they're not making any new claims so that's moot. Brutix doesn't even exist on NS anymore and Vastiva, I believe, has been IP-banned (or so says NS Wiki). Sarzonia and Praetonia are active elsewhere- well, Prae's only on General now. I suppose we could use a massive house-cleaning, but we'd be getting rid of A LOT of people and I'm just simply betting that if Manium bounces back so will they. *sigh* I wish I knew what to do...

2. I was wondering if Mitzel / Bjornya will be RP'ing or will I have to RP his characters in my "territory" to keep the RP moving? I don't want to step on anyone's toes or end up doing things out of their character or such.

3. I'd like to expand my Condensa claim- try to expand eastwards all the way to the east coast of Condensa where the mountain range and the ocean meet (Spot 9 I think?). The RP for that expansion can be included in the Eggerland RP if we can get that RP moving.

4. Finally, I need some info from Bjornya / Mitzel on which Final Fantasy characters are available and not available for RP purposes. The ones I'm thinking of is characters from Final Fantasy 7 through 10, specifically Tifa, Barret, Rinoa, Laguna, Rikku, and Kihmahri (blue tiger dude). I

Yeah, but you have to give enough space around the Spot so that the person who claims it can establish a reasonable-sized colony (the rule states seven days' worth). I'll still grant you those branches but they'll be edited so Spot 3 has some room to work with.

Sharina: I didn't put you to the coast because I want to see if any newcomer wants those spots first. If no one takes it by next week, they'll be yours.

BUMP for response.

I'd like to fill out everything between my easternmost expansion (which should be at spot 10 I think) all the way to the easternmost coast (Spot 9).

Besides it has been 2 weeks since my last expansion, I think.

So I hope you had fun.

Thank you. :) Why yes I did. I saw the "longest street in the world", being Yonge Street (Ontario Highway 11), which stretches from Toronto through Northern Ontario to Thunder Bay and on to Rainy River, right on the border between Minnesota and Ontario and just off the border with Manitoba. It looks a lot different by the Minnesota border than it does in downtown Toronto. Northern Ontario's beautiful, and I got to do some neat stuff- there were Polar Bears in Cochrane, stopped by Fort Frances' annual festival and I sat in a $30 million plane used for forest fires in Hearst. I realized that Ontario's a lot bigger than I thought it was- but it's a nice province to drive around in, there's a lot to see and not enough time to view it :( (Pity they don't advertise it more- we'd make a lot of money doing so). Meh, next year. Until then, yet more time in the dump called Alliston...

I'll be removing Spots 7 and 8. Soon you'll be taking the entire continent. :p

Yes, Yonge Street is really, really long. Took us three days to finish it, including crossing into the Central Time Zone (yes, Ontario's that big). There's a bit of controversy over Yonge's length- the actual physical street named "Yonge Street" is no longer technically a part of Ontario Highway 11 (which gave Yonge the designation of "longest street in the world"), but when Ontario first assigned a "Highway 11", it chose Yonge Street, and specifically the portion that's no longer technically the highway today. Meh. Eventually Ontario will understand the marketing potential of Yonge and they'll rectify the situation.

You should visit Canada- but contrary to popular belief, not all of us leave our doors unlocked (I don't). How far are you from the border?

But I don't intend on taking all of Cordensa, just all the northern part that Azazia doesn't take.

I know New York is about 11 hours from the border- where in New Jersey are you?

As far as Yonge Street is concerned (I'll try to rephrase it, sorry about that): when Ontario was picking routes to mark as provincial highways, it picked Yonge as "Highway 11". Over the years, Highway 11 got extended all the way to Rainy River, thus allowing Yonge to become "the longest street in the world". However, north of Barrie- about 60 km north of Toronto along Yonge- the signposts marking the street don't name it anything other than "Highway 11", and, in 1997, the part of the street marked as "Yonge Street" was downgraded from provincial highway status, which has made people question Yonge's legitimacy as "the longest street in the world" since nowhere along Highway 11 is it marked as "Yonge Street" (Ontario provincial highways sometimes have other names to mark the roads, because they pass inside cities- for example, Highway 89 in my hometown of Alliston is also named "Victoria Street"). However, I counter that argument with the fact that when Ontario assigned "Highway 11" it gave it to Yonge, so whatever's marked as "Highway 11" should also be Yonge whether it's marked that way or not.

Cordensa: So I should remove the northern spots then?

Where were we in the Manium conference? Is there anything we can do to keep it going ourselves? I'm a bit confused about that too- I know we were waiting on a couple of people to respond.

Sounds like a good idea.

I forgot exactly how much land I have, but I believe I have colonies on all four maps. The large island south of Manium (I'd like to claim the rest of it), the northeastern area of Condensa (the fish shaped continent), the island of Hell or Tartarus (I forgot which) in the newest continent map, and along the western slopes of the mountain range in Pescium (the far western + southern part of the continent).

Beyond that I don't think I have any other land except the one being explored in the Eggerland RP before it went inactive.

Cool. I'll make the IC post tomorrow then (I don't have time now).

As far as your claims Sharina- the maps are still up (and current), have a look at them and let me know if I have to make changes.

My land claims:

Manium:

I own 80% of Sheepfruit Island.

The Lightning Star and Vastiva are the other 20%. However, these two nations have been long gone. Vastiva was banned if I remember correctly, and TLS has quit NS (and nation is deleted I think). I still do RP with him off-site though.

Therefore, I would like to claim the remainder of Sheepfruit Island.

Pescium:

I own roughly one-fourths of Pescium, namely the northeastern quadrant. I think I am pretty much finished making claims on Pescium.

Cordensa:

I own pretty much all the land along the west side of the mountain range dividing Upper Cordensa from Lower Cordensa.

I would like to officially annex all the land that have not been filled out in this area (Lower Cordensa). However, I do not want any land beyond the eastern or northern slopes of the mountain range.

Elysium:

I own the entirety of Tartarus Isle. I am unsure whether I'd like to expand onto the mainland of the Elysium continent.

-------------------------------------

Member Issues:

Manium:

There is quite a number of players in Manium that aren't active, have been deleted, gone MIA, or has not been around in a while. However, I'm actively RP'ing with Safehaven off-site and his NS nation does still exist but I'm not sure if he wants to RP in mainstream NS anymore though- similiar to what happened to TLS.

Vastiva = Banned as far as I know.
The Lightning Star = Quit NS.
Brutix = Quit NS.
Nebarri Prime = Haven't seen him around.
Nycton = Quit NS.
Taldaan = Haven't seen him around.
Sarzonia = Not sure if he wants to resume RP in Manium.
Generic Empire = Not sure if he wants to resume RP in Manium.
Praetonia = Not sure if he wants to resume RP in Manium.
Safehaven2 = Not sure if he wants to resume RP in Manium.

Only active members on Manium Continent as of now:

Borman Empire
Hamptonshire
RomeW
Sharina

Pescium:

Currently there are only three players on Pescium. Myself, RomeW, and Mitzel. However, Mitzel has apparently quit NS as his nation doesn't exist anymore on the NS main page. I apparently fully "enclose" Hamptonshire's claim in Pescium which incidentally is the size of an initial claim, but I'm not sure if he wants that land or not.

Only active members on Pescium Continent as of now:

Hamptonshire (?)
RomeW
Sharina

Cordensa:

There are three players in Cordensa, myself, Borman Empire, and Azazia. I haven't seen Azazia around and I'm not sure if he's still interested in RP'ing in Manium.

I have another concern though. Borman Empire pretty much owns over half of the land in Cordensa, and from the looks of it, new players won't have much land to claim in Cordensa if Borman grabs up the last bits of land north of the mountain range. Therefore, I recommend that Borman's claims are tweaked a bit- Perhaps a reduction, or shift his claims into a reasonable area without "branches" of his claimed lands jutting everywhere (as can be seen on the map).

Only active members on Cordensa Continent as of now:

Borman Empire
Sharina

Elysium:

There's a few nations in Elysium that I have not seen around or know that have been deleted. Mitzel and The Lightning Star have been deleted / quit NS. I am not sure about Praetonia and Cotland. So far it looks like just me and Ottoman Khaif.

Only active members on Elysium Continent as of now:

Ottoman Khaif
Sharina

---------------------------------------

This summary should help free up quite a bit of land, clean up the Manium areas, and get rid of deadwood. Also this should serve as a heads up for those who still exist or RP elsewhere in NS but may not want to continue RP in Manium.

The ones which I've indicated as "Quit NS" should have their lands erased from the various Manium continents (notably TLS, Mitzel, and Brutix).

I'd like to resolve Mitzel's absence as he was an integral part of the Eggerland RP with his Final Fantasy themed nation and characters. I'd like to keep his land in Pescium as it pertains to the Eggerland RP, but treat it as a NPC nation or some such thing.

Thoughts?

TLS has quit NS and his nation no longer exists, so I had intended to expand into his dead nation.

GE is still around and I belive he wants to keep his colony, but not expand it any further. I think he had some plans for some RPs with it.

I'd like to request another week's worth or expansion on Cordensa (http://usera.imagecave.com/obsterray/Cordensa.PNG). I'm finishing up today's post in my revolution thread and hope to have a couple more up in the next couple weeks.

As to Sharina, my claims branch off everywhere (Which believe me, annoys me more than you) because I have to leave room around the slots for newcomers to come and grow. However, I havn't stopped expanding because no one is coming.
