It's a little longer, but not much. Already people only remember Bill Clinton as that guy who lied about having sex with someone. In four or six years they'll only remember George W. Bush as that guy who said "They misunderestimated me", except for a few less easily distracted people who also remember that he said "Make the pie higher". In fifteen years it's likely Barack Obama will only be remembered as the black guy, unless he does something to eclipse that in terms of pop culture staying power.

Historically all of those who have attempted to make the daring switch over to breathing chlorine have failed, for some reason. You could say that people have almost given up trying.
Still, I live for the day when someday we may be able to take off our environment suits in the verdant chlorinated atmosphere of the planet Zorkon and allow our respiratory systems to adjust to breathing chlorine. Chemically speaking, the differences are minor and this is really the kind of thing that should have been fixed a long time ago.
I'd say it's just another failure of the Bush Administration. It's been notoriously lax in terms of scientific progress. I also note -- no dinosaurs.

Fascinating. The man only took office 3 weeks ago, hasn't yet been able to appoint all of his cabinet, and already he has failed.
If this were sports, I don't imagine anyone would be expecting a new coach to be able to turn around a team in three weeks.
If this were a corporation, I imagine the CEO would already have been fired, given a golden handshake and a 20 million dollar bonus.
As for radio, my favorite comment comes from the ultra patriotic Rush as he was talking about the new president of the United States. "I hope he fails." My, my! Such patriotism, Rush! Makes me proud to be 'murican. <suppress gag reflex>
My advice: Give him some time. Bush didn't dump us in the crapper in the first 3 weeks of his first term either. The fact is, no matter who the president, it's close to impossible to hold a rational discussion on the pros and cons.
Leaving bias aside as a factor, issues such as the amount of influence he has, the difference between an administration and the president along with varying interpretations of the consequences of any act are simply starters.
Correctly discerning motivations, intent and more complicate it all further.
Is Barack Obama a failure, by what criteria does one measure him, one might say he failed to properly scrutinise Daschle et al, but really?
Anyway, no matter how long into his presidency, we're all as fair and balanced as FOX.
My local talk radio dude says "yes".....
evidence
- economy is bad
- people are loosing jobs
- soldiers are dying in Iraq
- women can now sue if they aren't paid fairly
- abortion is legal
- the government is spending money it doesn't have
Discuss.
What's the point? He's been "President" less than a Month-even Teddy Roosevelt didn't move that fast. Though, to be fair, Bush got the same treatment, in the same amount of time, so it's all part of the game.
If we're exceptionally Lucky, Obama's going to be a mediocre president-this is what you get when you use the criteria from "American Idol" to choose your leadership. One month isn't enough time to evaluate what got bought by the American people, he hasn't had time to influence the Bureaucracy yet, put his particluar stamp on policy, or even work out all the shit he needs to know how to do to do the job.
Now, in six months to a year we'll know if Celebrity and good-looks are matched by ability to govern. At least, to govern a Congress that is made up mostly of his party allies and party stalwarts. Should he ever face an Opposition congress (unlikely-hell, damn near impossible, really-the GOP's a disaster internally with no direction, no surviving principles, and no internal leaders capable of putting a sentence together), Or a Press that isn't in the bag for him (also deeply unlikely), we'll know if he's more than Mediocre.
His early selections for cabinet posts aren't promising-two Tax-Cheats including a Treasury Secretary doesn't indicate sound judgement, but then, he's from Chicago, and a certain amount of that kind of corruption is simply part of the Illinois system Obama rose through the ranks of-it's to be expected, and no big deal.

How soon we all forget the alternative..
I don't know why politicians lay out detailed platforms on different issues when voters imagine they can achieve anything they say on a whim, if John McCain had just promised to give everyone a million dollars on taking office, I expect he would have won.
Barack Obama promoted a vision backed by specific policy outlines, no one with half a brain would think he'd just achieve them.
You vote for the better candidate on the understanding that he cannot fulfill every wish, that there are realities to face and as much as everyone likes to pretend that everyone voted for Barack Obama just because they heard him say change, the fact is that there were two main candidates running and, for all his faults, the better candidate won.

True enough that McCain would have been worse, but we're not talking about things that would be that difficult to achieve (with the possible exception of the withdrawal); he could end the wiretapping with the stroke of a pen, and how difficult would it be for him to order the Justice Department to investigate the torture program? Admittedly, convictions might be harder to achieve, but at least try damn it!

if Obama's goal was "change," and so much of what he has been doing is "same old, same old" - deficit spending, appointing "old boy network" politicians, making promises that cannot be fulfilled, then yeah, I'd say he's failed. Quite miserably, in fact.
Funny though. This guy is saying that Obama has failed before Obama has even been in office a month, and Republicans were still telling us to give Bush's policies a chance right up until the election.
Funny though. This guy is saying that Obama has failed before Obama has even been in office a month, and Republicans were still telling us to give Bush's policies a chance right up until the election.
I think it's called "Applying your standards to your side." or "Tit for Tat". It's a stupid game, but it's human-the Democrats set the standard of analysis in 2001 with the "Bush stole the Election" meme, the "He's Not MY President" meme, and the "Impeach Bushitler" stickers were already up by February of that year...
Then, there was the rough five minutes of "We're all americans" after 9/11, by January of 02, it was back to business as usual, including the Code Pinkers, "End the War NOW" crowd (we hadn't even GONE to Iraq at that point) holding protests, and the return of what amounts to the usual.
Now, it's on the other foot, and apparently it pinches a bit. So What? None of it really matters-as the "Stimulus Bill" shows, there really isn't a dime's worth of difference between Obama's policies, and Bush's, save that Obama's more ambitious about wasting money doing things that didn't work the first few times they were tried, and he has even LESS concept of Limits than his predecessor.
All of which means absolutely jack shit, he's been in office less than a month, hopefully he'll either get smarter, figure out something that works, and do it, or he'll be the rubber stamp for Pelosi-Reid (in which case, we're all fucked sooner, rather than later.)
The car was already going over the cliff when they switched drivers in 2000, now it's 2009, and they've switched to a guy who has a lead foot.
IIRC, it was the Alaskan National Guard troops she was visiting in the Middle East-you know, the people she was (Nominally) responsible for?

i listened to rush yesterday for ..... 5 minutes (all i can take) and he was almost as crazy as michael savage (who seems to me to be literally mentally ill). he ranted about how the president has warped the fabric of society as evidenced by the pathetic people who went to the ft myers town meeting and then screeched about he and his listeners taking back the government until he settled down a bit and "clarified" that he meant in the next elections.
sean hannity (a few hours later) was still harping on how the democrats are going to turn us into FRANCE (i dont understand why that is the worst of the worst) and commiserating with his listeners who are scared witless over obamas plans for the country.
its kinda creepy. i wonder how many followers they are losing.

Which is why I think that it's unfair people think that he's a bad president, if they do think that at all. You're summing some things up that evidence he's doing his job. More so, he perhaps has done something that other presidents weren't able to do so early on their presidency.

I wouldn't consider that Obama has failed. As I already said, he's being in the White House short of a month. And even so, as Neo Art stated, he has achieved a couple of landmarks. It's terribly unjust to declare him a failure so fast. He may not be a huge success, but he's not a failure either.

My first impression is that he couldn't do worse than the previous president. I am skeptical of his capacity to unite the country, particularly when his opposition is calling him a failure three weeks into his term. Many people roll their eyes at the man's charisma, but charisma's a pretty damned good quality in a leader, as far as motivation goes. "What you can do for your country" and all that. As a Canadian citizen, I feel that Obama will at the very least improve international relations.

No substitute for sensible rule. This bailout is just a way to line the pockets of the rich before he boosts taxes on them, a measure which will be rescinded in 2013 when the economy is a bit better and the Republicans quite possibly get someone in charge. We'll have to see then, mind.
As a Canadian citizen, I feel that Obama will at the very least improve international relations.

No, its sole scope is to punish violations of individual rights.
In the case of abortion, an individual is being killed without his consent; therefore, its rights are being violated.
In the case of the economy, individuals are transacting among themselves voluntarily, so no one's rights are being violated.

It's a separate individual, not just a part of her own body.
This is a crucial point I'd like to discuss.
wiki:foetus
Throughout the fetal stage, the fetus continues to be connected to the placenta by the umbilical cord, which supplies the fetus with oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the placenta, and conversely returns the deoxygenated, nutrient-depleted blood to the placenta.
merriam-webster:separate (adjective)
Main Entry: 2sep·a·rate
Pronunciation: \ˈse-p(ə-)rət\
Function: adjective
Date: 15th century
1 a: set or kept apart : detached barchaic : solitary , secluded c: immaterial , disembodied
2 a: not shared with another : individual <separate rooms> b often capitalized : estranged from a parent body <separate churches>
3 a: existing by itself : autonomous <a separate country> b: dissimilar in nature or identity <consulted five separate authorities>
synonyms see distinct
I'd say that we might discuss the foetus being already a human person (hence bearer of some rights) or not... but it clearly ISN'T a separate human individual. The separation from the mother's body happens when the umbilical cord detaches (or is cut). That is, during the process known as birth.
Technically speaking, the foetus is in parasytic relationship with the mother (parasite = "sharing the nourishment", more or less).
The foetus can survive (at least, until the last stages of gestation begin) ONLY if it's attached to the mother. It's not independent, and it isn't an "individual" form of life, yet.
No, its sole scope is to punish violations of individual rights.
In the case of abortion, an individual is being killed without his consent; therefore, its rights are being violated.
1.I just showed you that a foetus isn't an individual.
2.That would be the scope of the judiciary power. By your definition, the government shouldn't command the military, or make new laws: there would be no executive, no legislative. Just the judiciary.
3.In the case of a woman being forced to keep a foetus she didn't want (take rape as extreme example, ok?), her rights to dispose freely of her own body are being violated. Her sexual organs are subject to an unwanted presence. So it qualifies, from a strictly technical point of view, as a ongoing rape.
There is, at the very least, a contrast between two different and conflicting rights.
In the case of the economy, individuals are transacting among themselves voluntarily, so no one's rights are being violated.
Unless there's this little matter of the abuse of dominant position, which influences the market quite a lot.

It sorta sends the message that god's ok with the raping, not so much about WHO they were raping. The point about the stories is that the cities were destroyed because of their inhospitability towards strangers, not that they were "teh gay".
And by using the story as an excuse to marginalize gays in the community, the religious right is just as guilty of the behavior that, supposedly, merited destruction of cities.

2.That would be the scope of the judiciary power. By your definition, the government shouldn't command the military,
It would if that military is used to keep out aggressors who wish to violate our rights.
or make new laws:
Precisely. There's one fundamental objectively correct set of laws, and once they're in place there is neither a need nor a valid reason to change them.
3.In the case of a woman being forced to keep a foetus she didn't want (take rape as extreme example, ok?), her rights to dispose freely of her own body are being violated.

I wasn't referring to physical separation; sorry if I wasn't clear about that. I was referring to separation in the moral sense.
"Separation in the moral sense" needs at the very least a tighter definition, as "morals" aren't exactly universal.
It would if that military is used to keep out aggressors who wish to violate our rights.
Wait. You here have made a logical jump. You have gone from "individual" rights to "aggressors" vs "our rights". That is, you went from the idea that the rights are only of individuals, to the concept of community/society.
By that, you see that there is something else that should be protected, other than merely "individual rights".
Precisely. There's one fundamental objectively correct set of laws, and once they're in place there is neither a need nor a valid reason to change them.
This "fundamental objectively correct set of laws" being?
Btw, no executive => no taxes, no police, no prisons.
That's a pathological case that should be considered separately from the general case.
Why? Laws should always be made the most "general" possible; judges will apply them to specific cases.
