nah, they've been trying to teach her to pronounce it right... It's too related to Bush to be a good affectation to have.

That may actually work against him. Your average voter, and pretty much people in general are idiots. They don't want to think about what actually make sense, etc. They want soundbites. That's why soundbites are so popular.

Biden needs to start making soundbites.

I think she just said it right, but only once.

Do you think "Nucular" is an affectation?

I think it's deliberate.

I think it's appealing to a certain denominator... and it worked for Bush...

Can I rant about the surge?

OF COURSE THE SURGE WAS GOING TO WORK...

If you take an army, and significantly increase the size of that army at the point of engagement, you are going to have a greater chance of success. Every general since the stone age has known that, and Petraeus isn't a genius for using it... It's one of the most basic concepts in military strategy. I have nothing but respect for the General, but he's not doing anything new, and I wish the Republicans would stop acting like he's our Julius Caesar...

Отче наш, сущий на небесах!
Да святится имя Твоё;
Да придёт Царство Твоё;
Да будет воля Твоя
И на земле, как на небе;
Хлеб на насущный
Дай нам на сей день;
И прости нам долги наши,
как и мы прощаем
должникам нашим;
И не введи нас в искушение,
Но избавь нас от лукавого.
Ибо Твоё есть Царство
И сила и слава во веки.

Aren't we a Republic, not a Democracy?

The terms are not mutually exclusive.

A "democracy" is a political system in which the people rule. In terms of our political institutions, we have at least the necessary forms--our leaders are elected in free elections by (more or less) universal suffrage.

A "republic" is, literally, a political order that is public: that seeks to protect the rights and promote the interests of all, not just a particular exclusive few. In modern usage, it tends to exclude monarchies and similarly hereditary-based political systems as essentially anti-republican in character, because they elevate some over others on the basis of birth privilege rather than merit. Insofar as we can attach the label "republican" to a set of political institutions rather than to a careful analysis of how they actually work, the United States probably qualifies there, too--certainly that was the stated intention of those who set them up, anyway.

If she agrees that there should be no civil rights difference between gay couples and straight couples, then we have no disagreement.
Moderator: Do you, Governor Palin?
Palin: The question you originally asked was if he supports gay marriage and he said no. I agree with him. We don't support gay marriage.

She avoided every question she didn't have a canned answer for. And blatantly lied that McCain supported more oversight, but when asked by the moderator to respond to Biden when he challenged him as the deregulator, she changed the subject to taxes.

I think Biden performed better, but that was expected (and he didn't screw up or seem condescending). Palin, I expected to fail miserably but she managed distance herself from her Couric performance. It'll probably be called a draw by the pundits, as a result. But again, the polls could very well say otherwise. If I had to guess we'll see more support for Biden from the post-debate polls, but I really like his answers and that's my bias. It seems more and more people are leaning that way, though.

Well if the question is: was she better than expected, then yes, but then my 2-year old nephew would have a shot at reaching those expectations.

If the question is: do you want this person a heartbeat away from the presidency, then no, she came nowhere close.

I prefer to look at it like this:

Biden brings to the table experience, knowledge, and a healthy level understanding of the issues for fulfilling a role as main advisory for Obama.

Palin brings nuts. Absolute nuts for McCain. She has Zero usefulness in the office.

Note-I use nuts to mean nothing. Of course, the other meanings will apply just as readily, I do suppose.

interesting stat from CNN. Polls taken after the debate asking if Palin is qualified to be president, versus polls taken before the debate remained, essentially, unchanged.
yay!
