The 4th NS UK meetup... (oh dear lord, when will they stop)

Having been co opted to organise an NS meetup for xmas 2006 I have decided that I should make a thread and organise it. Ladies and gentlemen, please do not let the prospect that xmas 2006 has already passed put you off. I propose that the meet be arranged in proximity to easter, when the students of NS will be on their holidays, and their might be a bankholiday around to make reduce time pressures.

Ok, people have had long enough to vote where they want to go. The most most popular are London and Glasgow. However, there is virtually no overlap. People have either voted for one or the other. So, we could have a two meets at the same time. One in Glasgow for those in the North and one in London for those in the South.

Anyone from the following list willing to organise a meet in Glasgow?

Chronosia, Chumblywumbly, IL Ruffino, Infinite Revolution, The Phoenix Milita, Unified Sith, Yootopia

Now that the location poll is up all we need to do now is focus on dates. I was thinking of a weekend (friday inclusive) evening in March or
April. Saturday would probably best as it would he could just pretend we're 5 hours ahead and so those he don't want to say the night can head off early, but still be thoroughly inebriated.

DATES! I'm going to arbitarily suggest the 14th of April because a friday 13th will have just gone and we might all want a drink to wash the bad luck away.

london is good for myself and glitzi
bristol is good
birmingham is just about do-able

isn't there anywhere with good travel links somewhere between birmingham and london? that'd be perfect... like oxford or something?

leeds or manchester would be no-goes for me, being a southern boy and all (its scary up north ;))

If I can make it London is best for me. Aberystwyth or John O'Groats would be fun but unlikely...Brum and Leeds I could go for but Mancland...not a chance....what with growing up as a teen in Leeds ;)

It would have to be a weekend though.

I'd vote for Leeds. Mainly cos I live there :p but also cos the last one was in London, I guess. Ignoring time, its quite cheap to get from London to Leeds on the bus/train if you book early enough. Definitely not the land of Mancs! I may be a Geordie but I've picked up a few Yorkshire traits, shall we say...

I nominate glasgow, because I'm here and it's easy to get to.

I nominate glasgow, because I'm here and it's easy to get to.All the cities I mentioned are fairly substantial transportation hubs that are central to the majority of the UK (you'll note that the so far Leeds and Birmingham seem to be the most popular - due in part to their centrality).

well there are Irish NSGers....

I'll come if someone else will play for the flights and accomodation. You should be so lucky. If I were to pay for anything you'd probably get ferry tickets and bus tickets and depending on which city we go to I'd put you up in my own house, or with one of the members of my family... except Manchester. I have no family in Manchester. I'd probably have to stay there as well to avoid any awkwardness. 'Hi grandma, can you put up this Irish guy for the night. No, you don't him, but I do. Anyway, toodleloo.'

Living in York, I can get to just about anywhere in a couple of hours on the train, and four or five by bus, so wherever's good for me - but really, Leeds would be the best choice due to its close proximity.

I'm an Old Person now, no 30% discount for me :(
Also, I live ten miles from Kettering station and the only practicable way of getting there is by car. So that means blagging lifts to/from, or paying even more money to park there all day.

With the exception of London (where I can stay all weekend at my girlfriend's house) trains work out slower, more expensive and more hassle than just driving places. Even if it means no beer.

Ladies and gentlemen, please do not let the prospect that xmas 2006 has already passed put you off. I propose that the meet be arranged in proximity to easter, when the students of NS will be on their holidays, and their might be a bankholiday around to make reduce time pressures.

So where? Whens the April bank holiday? Is there one? Coz if its that weekend traveling will be a bitch...

Oh...and yeah London is easiest...but Leicester sounds fun for a curry...or Brum...can we sort out a place soon so I can book cheap train tickets?

Oh...and a decent pub. Not a Weatherspoons....nor a themed place...a pool table would be nice...

Right, there have been enough positive responses to the 14th of april (the saturday after easter sunday), and for london. So we will there will be a meet on the 14th of April in London...

I just have decide where in London now.

Hmmm... how about The Lyceum, 354 Strand. It has cheap beer (for London - £1.76 for a pint), and real ale too. It's about 500m away from Charing Cross train station making it fairly easy to get to. It's also 500m from Embankmet and Temple, and 300m from Covent Garden.

If that's not to your liking then her's a set of nice pubs in central london to browse over. Enjoy. :)

Fine! We can move it later if you want. I just arbitarily picked a time, because I was getting fed up pussy footing about asking everyone what was convienient for them.

Nah, don't arrange it around me. I'll just be late. But I would be anyway, so I'll still be earlier than if I were late and you'd arranged it at 2pm.

Excellent excuse for a nice, big fried breakfast just beforehand, too.

Yep - college here is like your high school - you get an education from 16-18 and a fair few drop out.

Most universities also suck at intercollation, and many departments will discourage students from taking modules from outside of the department, let alone consider intercollating.

making that decision so early does suck... the american way (or way we used to have it iirc) of doing a selection of actually different subjects in your first year (not just different modules of the same subject) and chosing which one(s?) to carry on in the second year makes far more sense to me.

Yay, thank you! :fluffle: perfect :)

Most universities also suck at intercollation, and many departments will discourage students from taking modules from outside of the department, let alone consider intercollating.
Actually, I've spent all evening looking at various universities prospectus's after a convention thing, and many universities make you take modules in other subjects, especially in the first year, and sometimes in the second year. There are also a few universities (such as St Andrews) where you can take 2 or 3 subjects, equally, in the first year and then gradually specialise in 1 of them over the 3 years if you want, or get a combined degree. And in pretty much all universities, you can get many many combined degrees, and you pretty much always choose your specific specialisations in whatever subject you're taking in the last year (e.g. for psychology, choosing to take options of educational psychology, focus on personality and the individual etc).

Of course, after typing that, I realise that I've only been looking at Psychology, so it could vary greatly in other subjects. Though I think a lot of what I said does apply, because many universities I've looked at have a general policy of these things, such as a policy of making you take some module options from other subjects etc.

Not as good as it could be, obviously, but seems to be taking steps in the way of making sure people don't specialise too soon :)
