I wouldn't consider the penis-gourds and loin-cloth cultures to be slutty.
In their system of norms, it's just as normal to wear a loin-cloth as is wearing a t-shirt and jeans is to us.
So wearing said loin-cloth is, in their culture, not considered to be overly revealing and/or sexually provocative, and therefor, not slutty.
Calling it slutty is just imposing "western" values upon a definately not-western culture.
FD, Of course you can be silly. It's always very important to have a comic-relief person in "serious" threads like this. You fit the shoe admirably ;)
And yes, I too can be silly, I just hide it better :p (and I try to stay on topic, even if only remotely, with at least part of my posts :))
Also be carefull when dodging the chandeliers, knowing Chandi's likes (the Phantom!), she has a gazilion trap-doors scattered everywhere, and she will subtly drop the chandeliers in a pattern that unknowingly forces you closer and closer to one of them, until you dodge the last chandelier, gloating "HAH, now you have nothing left to throw at me, you silly Chandelier girl!" and she merely smiles and points at the 1000ft. deep pit you are currently hurtling yourself towards.
Meath, I think it has something to do with men in our culture. Revealing something attracts male attention, and considering the western culture is still a patriarchal society, male attention gets you places.
But you show an excellent point. I feel my favourite web-comic states it the best here (http://www.gpf-comics.com/d/19990430.html).

I beg to digress. Although it may be a turn-on for a short while, I don't think it would last more than a month...

I've seen variations on this perspective a few times in this thread now, and it kind of upsets me a little. I grew up believing that because I was "ugly," people would laugh at me or hate me if I had the nerve to wear pretty things, and despite being well into adulthood, I still haven't entirely broken myself of this mode of thought. I have a collection of sexy clothes that I've bought over the years and worn perhaps once each, if at all, because I simply can't work up the nerve to appear in public doing what I would think of as "acting like I think I'm pretty." So I rather hate seeing positive evidence that people really would react the way I've imagined them doing... :(

But if you're really, really curious, I've been told I bear a striking resemblance to Waterhouse's Ophelia (http://www.victorianweb.org/painting/jww/paintings/7.html). And really, isn't a Victorian-era painting of a fictional character so much cooler than some silly old photo? :p

May I add that the "formula" usually includes showing lots of skin?
... because I simply can't work up the nerve to appear in public doing what I would think of as "acting like I think I'm pretty." So I rather hate seeing positive evidence that people really would react the way I've imagined them doing... :(
Poliwanacraca, Have you ever worn your outfits at home? Look at yourself in a mirror and look at the person in the mirror.
If you would see any other person walking around like that, would you think her ugly?
Now, look back in the mirror, and look at yourself. Would you consider yourself ugly?
If your answers are "no" and "yes" respectively, I would call you a hypocrit ;)
You have every right to wear what you want, where you want. (except maybe "nothing" in front of "kindergarten"...)
Try out some stuff in front of a mirror, and if you find something you like, ask a friend (not a "friend", a friend) what they think, have a giggle about it you want. No-one is to old to play dress-up!
It is my personal belief that no single woman is ugly. (And this belief has withstood 20 years of field testing!)
I'm not going to let you be the one to disprove it ;)
You too can be beautifull, all you have to do is see it yourself!
so if 'slutty' isn't cross-cultural, is it even useful?
It's definately usefull. Despite the fact that we only found a fitting definition in this very thread, the word has survived countless years of lingual "survival of the fittest". Therefore we can only conclude that the word has at least some merrit to it.
And now seriously: The word can be used within your own culture just fine, even if it is generally considered insulting.
In that way, it's just as usefull as "dickhead" or "asshole", which are also insulting in english, but not every language. ("asshole" for example, translates very bad to dutch, people would still take it as an insult, but a weird one)
*traipses around in the thread very carefully to collect the letters and quotes for this post*

The answers are indeed "no" and "yes" respectively, and I know that makes me, if not exactly a hypocrite, at least somewhat silly. I've also had friends tell me many times that I should feel more comfortable dressing sexily. (Several of my male friends have been particularly enthusiastic on this point.) But the fact remains that when I put on what I think of as pretty clothes, I instantly become massively paranoid about people thinking horrible things about me - so it becomes easier just to wear baggy old jeans and t-shirts and not have to worry about it.
The stupidest thing about all this, of course, is that the sort of people who would look at anyone and think, "Ugh, she's too ugly to go around wearing tank tops. She should go home and put a bag over her head" are pretty much the sort of people for whom I am likely to have zero respect, so it hardly makes sense to waste any time or effort worrying about their opinions. Sadly, anxiety rarely responds well to this sort of sensible reasoning...

I think I can relate. There were a couple of girls in school, back when age was still written in one digit, and they bullied me too.
A psychiatrist would probably be delighted to hear that I blame them for still feeling fidgety whenever I get a compliment. I still don't take compliments well, making me all blushy and trying to reason them away.
All I can say is that anxiety indeed can't be reasoned away. We'll have to confront said anxiety with countless proofs of the opposite before it will go away. All I can advise you (and myself while I'm at it..) is to make sure you are in positions to obtain such proof ;)
Go on, wear it! Do yourself (and us men  ) a favour!
I agree with you on the "stupid" part. After the teacher intervened (yay for observant teachers!) I still went out to the bully-girls for a few weeks trying to get their attention. Somehow it seems human to want attention from those that won't give you the right kind (of attention that is). Maybe it has something to do with a desire to be thought-well-of by everyone, especially the ones who don't think well of you...
Okay, enough with the amateur psychology...

The real problem is that you aren't selfish enough.:p You shouldn't worry about what other people think of the way you dress. Just dress however makes you feel comfortable or beautiful or sexy...whatever it is you want to feel. It's your mind that will appeal to the guys you probably want anyway.

Aw, thanks. :)
(You know, NS General is a very strange place - in under 1200 posts, I've had people insult me, compliment me, ask me to marry them, damn me to hell, and everything in between. Thanks for coming down on the nice side of the line...even if being damned to hell is rather entertaining. :p )
You seem like a very nice person and I agree with Cornflakeistan: be a little more selfish. Trust me, most people are far more involved with how they look to you than in judging how you look. And you can always do the old "imagine them in their underwear" thing, it often helps. :D

("asshole" for example, translates very bad to dutch, people would still take it as an insult, but a weird one)
well sure, we can always use another word to call someone or something we don't like. i'm just not sure that as a concept there really is anything there beyond a statement of personal disaproval.

That pic of Jodie was tame by comparison. There was a pic in the papers of her basically wearing something that looked like two belts which just covered her nipples. (1 belt strap for each). That kind of outfit is not for anything other than porn in my eyes.
That is an opinion i can agree with.

But Freedonia, would you actually consider dating one for more than 3 months?
Or longer?

Since this thread has devolved into spam, I'm stalling it.
