Heh ... my wife is always ribbing me about there being an 'R' in the English alphabet for a reason. I pronounce it "wawdah".

What dialect does "aboot" come from?

I suspect it comes from Scottish influence. The interesting thing about Canadian accents...some of the most pure Scottish, Irish or even French accents can be found here, though that will be hotly denied by Scotts, Irish and French:). But if you think about it, it makes sense. Immigrants came over to isolated areas, and once new immigrants stopped coming over with accent 'changes', the dialects stayed stagnant. You want to hear an 1880 Scottish accent? Try Cape Breton:).

It's not just me...and I'll admit I use it too...but imagine rolling your eyes at someone in a RL conversation. It's kind of the same intention, right? Impatience, annoyance, disbelief at someone's ignorance...I try not to use it unless I want to convey those meanings. Like 'yelling' in all caps...[/end of lecture I once got and am now passing on to you]

I think it combines as many English sounds as possible, which are difficult for Swedish people to say.

First off, great songs. You have a very nice singing voice...any professional training?
second, I think I remember it being in a linguistic study. If it was in the study that I am thinking of, its purpose is because it contains morphemes that pose a challenge to most, if not all, english accents. It was used to compare what groups emphasized and deemphasized what words and sounds, and that information was used to track how the accents developed. Of course, that is only if this was used in the research I'm thinking of, and for the life of me, I cannot think of the damn name.

It would be pretty interesting to track something like this, and see how various accents come out in English. I always loved that part of linguistics. There are certain sounds in any language that some language speakers just can't pronounce, no matter what...it'd be neat to see what sounds are common to certain linguistic groups.

ha...yeah, I can identify with the love/hate performance thing. Thats why I swapped to backstage work a few years ago and have never looked back.

As for the accents, if I'm not mistaken, I think that the New England accents are almost exactly like what British English was during the early colonial times. England was influenced by the continent, while New England had little real outside influence. Oh, and the southern drawl came partially from the African slaves, who often spent most time with the children

I really should become a linguistics major instead of English...its more fun sometimes.

Our "accents" are so different they call them dialects. Having the Holy Roman Empire crumble into hundreds of little states did a lot to diverge the language.

I don't think this thread would be stickied, since it's so full of comments (look at the pic thread - mods don't like comments in stickied threads), so I suppose I would have to start a new, "clean" one and move everyone's links to it and organise it a bit more. It wouldn't take that much time or be difficult for me to do, but I would like to know in advance if it would be stickied, so that it doesn't end up being to no avail. :\

I suppose, but I don't know if the links to the different posts in the first message would remain functional, and it would be a lot of work for the mods to split so much out. Perhaps a new, clean thread would be the easiest thing. That way I could "reserve" a few posts in the beginning of the thread to have space to add samples and alphabetise properly.

That was my plan with the new thread. I was thinking about doing something like having "reserved" posts that would be alphabetised in groups, like "A-C" and "D-F" and so on. Those posts would contain direct links to files/download sites. Then I would link to those posts from the first post, and would direct comments to another thread - this one would do nicely for that, I think.

Pretty much like it's done in the picture thread. I could get to it in the morning (it's 3 am here now, so it will have to wait until I've slept) if people/mods think it's a good idea.

It's not a town, it's a university in Ottawa. They have underground tunnels connecting all the buildings, so some students stay inside all winter and get all pasty and quiver when exposed to direct sunlight. Like Warlocks.

...Or so I have heard. It will be my first time at the school. I am looking forward to the adventure, though.

Where're you from Chu?

I don't have a mike at the moment but when I get home in a week I'll post it up here - although there is a kilkenny accent at that Stella site which kinda sounds like me
