What do you sound like? (Sound files found, requested)

This thread is a result of one other thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=437292) and a post (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=9435478&postcount=198).

In an attempt to remedy this state of ignorance about our individual voices, I give you this thread, where I ask you to post a small sound file containing a recording of your voice, giving us a good appreciation of what your voice sounds like and what sort of accent you have.

Seeing as I'm the thread starter, I'll be the first one out:

Reading the previous paragraph. (http://goto.glocalnet.net/quelconque1/me2.mp3) [MP3, ~ 240kb]

Please call Stella. (http://goto.glocalnet.net/quelconque1/me.mp3) [MP3, ~ 320kb].

That's me reading the elicitation text found over at Speech Accent Archive. (http://accent.gmu.edu/browse_language.php?function=detail&speakerid=351)

If you need a programme to record your voice, I can recommend Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), which is free and open source. I'm afraid I can't help with hosting, but Ourmedia.org (http://www.ourmedia.org/) might be worth trying out (I don't know anything about it) and Rapidshare (http://rapidshare.de/) seems to work well for most so far.

While descriptions are nice, they are superfluous here, as we would really like some sound files for this thread!

Smug southern Englander - softly well-spoken accent ruined by the underlying estuary twang that comes from being a Thames-dweller.

Hmm, let's see the closest thing to the way I talk...

It's pretty much a mix of english1, english59, english68, and english107, though a bit deeper than the guys who recorded themselves on those.

lol, I already posted a sound bite of me singing as a sample for the NS Musical we're working on, though it doesn't capture me quite right. Wonder if just speaking'll work better. I'll do this in a bit.

Edit: Fass. I love you for Audacity...I completely forgot about it, and I've been needing a prog like this for the musical. Also, very nice voice.

I'm not going to post a sound file (I doubt anybody would want to hear it), but I will describe what I sound like.

Deep
Speech impediment
R's sound like w's
Th's sound like z's or d's

I can't think of/find any accent that is close to it. I can talk in few accents, though.

What difference does it make what colour the bags are? Finnaly, she has to wait till wednesday at the train station with several bags of frozen peas, they'l be all defrosted. Very bad planning.

Haha! It isn't that bad! It brought a smile to my face. American, but no discernable dialect. At least not to my untrained ears.I've read there's a growing "accent" that's being called Emerging General American that doesn't fit any of the regional dialects that are widespread in this country. That might be what mine is.

Having said that, I tend to take bits and pieces from various regional dialects or start speaking various regionalisms depending on how long I stay at a certain place. I lived in Maine for about a year and a half, but anytime I go back for even a few days, I find "wicked" returns to my vocabulary. I also use New York expressions from time to time because I have relatives from that state.

Well, I lived in the Northeast for a good portion of my childhood, but have lived in Texas for the past 8 years or so..so, I dunno. I suppose it might be because I've always felt more comfortable with Europeans/Canadians than I have with Americans, and so have adopted some of their manners of speech and all. *shrugs*

I don't know how British-English speakers will react to my "travesty" but I've got a nifty anectdote from a time when I performed Monty Python for our Camp Fire programs in Scout Camp:
Scoutmaster:"I haven't quite managed to place where in England your accent comes from."
Me:"That's probably because I'm German."

Nice choice. I can't place your accent - are you even American? :)

Yes, Virginian... more specifically from Tidewater (The Hampton Roads area [sic. Hampton, Newport News, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and Norfolk cities...])... There are 4 local accents in Virginia.... South-West Virginia, Central (James River Region) Virginia, Tidewater (Eastern) and the Eastern Shore (the Penensular area of Virginia south of Deleware)

Is it just me...or does everyone who has 'an accent' (re: doesn't sound like you) seem like they're faking it? Keru sounded like he was putting on that accent (even if he isn't)...though Fass's sounded normal...maybe I equate weird-southern-US-accents with fake, and anything-that-remotely-sounds-British (sorry Fass!) as real?

No offence taken. That's the way we were taught to speak English in school, and that's the voice that got me laid in Brighton. Well, I did make it more Swedish for that purpose... :p

You're not the only one who found Keru's a bit weird, but I'm not at all used to American accents, so I have no way of telling if it's authentic. It's Keru, though, so I'll buy it.

I was just thinking...my accent varies depending on who I talk to...most of us probably do...we tend to 'mirror' accents unconsciously as well (hence, the person who sounds a bit Aussie after speaking with an Australian for a while). Anway, this is me in Spanish (http://rapidshare.de/files/4052482/sinuhue_speaks_in_Spanish.wav.html). It's a very Chilean accent, I've been told.

Have some transcriptions!

English: "It's like this… At certain junctions in the course of existence, unique moments occur when everyone and everything, even the most distant stars, combine to bring about something that could not have happened before and will never happen again. Few people know how to take advantage of these critical moments, unfortunately, and they often pass unnoticed. When someone does recognize them, however, great things happen in the world."

Keru's accent is real Cajun. You also hear a similar accent in the Carolinas and parts of Georgia. Softer and more drawn out. I speak with a flat midwestern accent with some Texas/Arkansas twang that I've picked up in the 25 years I've lived down here. Most people think that the south has one particular accent, but if you are familiar with the variances you can tell where in the south they're from.

I sound a lot like my little brother and my dad over the phone. Sometimes when I'm at my dad's and I pick up the phone and say hello, whoever is on the other line addresses me with my dad's name and starts talking about what they wanted before I manage to tell them that I'm not my dad.

A short while ago, I called my mom's place and my dad answered the phone, and I thought, "WAIT a moment! Didn't I just dial-" before I realised it was actually my little brother...

Sorry about my harddrive spinning up and the stupid comments.

This is also points out why I write and don't act. I tried to find a line of dialog from one of my plays but none of them really sounded like me. If it sounds overly affectatious in the way I talk that's because I have an overly affectatious way of talking. Though I still wouldn't say this is really a good sample. Lol ... oh I hate that guy so much ... Crocodile Dundee and Yahoo Serious didn't help much, either. Although Priscilla helped a lot. When you record, be sure to say, "Oh just what the Outback needs: a cock in a frock on a rock."

I recommend the movie "The Castle."

lol its awesome to hear all your voices! i would post some more individual "wow your accent is cool" or "i didn't think you spoke like that!" but i think i'd start to get a tad repetitive...

San Francisco is NorCal, it's like our signature city (otherwise it would have to be Sacramento and we barely even want to admit it exists...) The NorCal places that give the NorCal image (tree dwelling hippies and cashed out computer millionaires) are Humbolt (where the sticky icky comes from) and Santa Cruz (where the sticky icky is smoked by all the surfers and organic types). The latter is my location (well technically now I live in the Santa Cruz mountains, with Bigfoot if the Bigfoot Museum currator is to be believed...)

The rest of NorCal is actually just small towns in mountains and farming. We also have Napa, which resembles the wine areas of France-so there are a ton of wineries (sp?) up here-so you can drink premium wine and smoke premium bud, sit on a premium beach next to some premium pieces of highway. Why the fuck people live in those other states is beyond me....

EDIT: Alright, I'm having a little too much fun. Here (http://rapidshare.de/files/4069968/socal.mp3.html) is me making fun of the SoCal accent. I'll stop now.

Here's me singing a song in Spanish called Maldicíon de Malinche (http://rapidshare.de/files/4075255/05_Track_5.wma.html)(Curse of Malinche). It's from 2001...and I only recorded it for my parents as a Christmas present because I had no money at the time for a real gift. So it's not polished. It's just me, my guitar, and a stupid echo effect my bro recorded it with. I've gotten better, I SWEAR!!!! :D

Sacramento sucks hard and long. It's more or less a desert except for the delta. It's really a dry lake bed that tries really hard to be a lake again everyonce in a while. When the city was first built it was flooded-they built it again-flooded. Then they just built a new city on top of the old one. Some times when they do construction the underground city will open up. They sealed it up because the homeless sleep there.

If you make it to Santa Cruz let me know, hopefully I'll be holdin'.

I dont believe that for a minute.

I could listen to that all day. I especially like it with the acoustic guitar.

Its good I cant put my sample on here.

The rest of you sound proper, polished and educated.

My Brooklynese would sound so coarse and unrefined here.

Well at least I THINK he's trying to block it...he keeps trying to put something in it so I can't sing... :p

Sad thing is, I learned the guitar so I could sing these Spanish songs that I fell in love with...yet I don't know a single English song outside of 'twinkle twinkle little star':)

I'd have to be bigger than that for even Nevada to see it, much less Oregon or Arizona-we're big. Imagine you'd have to hang a balloon big enough from your place that France could see it.

But shit yeah, party in the redwoods with the man with no name. Cats from other countries are the coolest, since I don't even leave the state...

And we can rub our meeting in Sdjaeri's nose :D

You'll need the balloons because otherwise you wouldn't know there where houses here. Mmmmmm mountain livin'....

Cleveland is the best character on that show, hands down. "You're what the spaniards call 'El Terrible'"
lol *imagines baloon large enough to be seen in france* :p

but sdaeriji can come too! i forget where he lives, but it can't be that far... america is such a small country after all ;)

Damnit... I can't get any of the rapidshare links to work at all. Keeps saying I've already downloaded too much. which is odd, since I haven't downloaded any.

If you're using a proxy, that's why.

You are required, by law, to pronounce your nation name with any recording you make.

lol, mine should be easy, except the last bit, which is a german word.

*snip*

Hosted on my server because Rapidshare is evil, so get it while it's hot (i.e. before Azureus starts sucking up all my upload bandwidth).

If I sound tired/bored, it's because I've been working in a refridgerated oncology pharmacy all day.

I've taken the liberty to rehost your file (http://goto.glocalnet.net/quelconque1/myrth.mp3), because your server was killing me! Like owner, like server, I suppose. ;)

Awesome voice, and finally, someone has the received pronunciation I've attributed them! *does little dance* :)

Yes, unfortunately until September my connection is limited to 128k up which translates to a maximum of about 16kb/s... I counted 7 people downloading a few minutes ago so... yeah.

Drah, and a sorta rolled k sound I suppose is how to put it, ending in an "uh" sound (which would be the "e").

Sdaeriji is about as far from me as he can get and still be in the continental United States. 5 hours by plane, I think. Though screw it-I feel like everyone else from his state is emptying in here, maybe he can hitch a ride with one of them before it empties...

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Ah..I was thinking of that region, but I couldn't remember if you were Canadian or American, so I took the "safe" route since we've more Americans here than Canadians that I've seen. I really want to get up to that area for a visit at some point (I've been to British Columbia, and loved it, and never wanted to leave).
