Hello, this is a crazy idea I know, but would anyone be interested in RPing highschool, I mean like where you can be anyone and stuff, you can be in any activity, ranging from band, to football to some sports I made up on my own. This is just an idea, and I just want to know if anyone would be interested.

What, may I ask, would this have to do with national events/chrisis or international interactions?
Techon

absoloutly nothing but not all RPs have to do with those
Benderland

Well this is NationStates, not Dawson's Creek. Maybe if they RPed in General (which they probably do) it would belong there.

Maybe it could be an international boarding school, where there are people from all around nationstates. It would make it interesting if we would have fights and stuff. Hatred towards some students. Parties. Cops. Enraged Parents. Yea, it could be awesome.

And due to the national stuff, it could be in international incidents.

I don't have to RP high school, I live there.......

Anyhoo, looks promising, if some central plot line gets worked out beforehand.

See, that's the answer I was looking for, Techon. That makes more sense for a game like NationStates.

yeah I agree with him, but lets just look at something... almost none of my RPs had to do with any nation policies or international incidents, a lot of RPs don't, but they go unnoticed, but yes there will be a plot, and we can have it an international boarding school

What about making it a school attended by the children of diplomats currently representing their nations at the UN? Then you could have coups leaving kids stranded, gossip about who's behind what resolution, clashes with actual Board of Education of city where UN is based (like, over what/how/if they teach religion, what books the kids study from, whether they wear national dress, what language they teach in, can kids wear 'religious' dress). This isn't RW, so it could be anywhere -- or maybe it's diplomats repping their country at some UN sub-organisation, so we can base this school wherever we want it.

Anyway. I'm in. I'll be Felicity Henderson, commonly known as Flick, a 16-year-old Australian girl who was happily attending Year 11 at an academically selective State high school in Sydney -- until my stupid mother married this stupid idiot moron diplomat from one of those fundamentalist American places. He convinced her that because I was now his kid it would be a security risk to leave me at a normal school. So here I am dumped at this hopeless school full of total bogans who don't have a thought beyond what colour their contact lenses should be (and I wouldn't dream of admitting that I'm scared stiff because all these other kids seem super-sophisticated and have lived all round the world and probably all carry guns and use more hard drugs than I use headache tablets).
What's more, I'm doing Studies in Religion because I've always been interested in why people come up with such different religions and now the Moron wants to discuss my homework with me and he's trying to convert me! And at this stupid school we're supposed to get all steamed up about stupid sport! And I don't care if it's un-Australian, I've always hated sport!
And if you think I've got issues, damn right I've got issues!

Name: I think I'll steal "Murdock's" mispronunciation of another name I've used. Angelica (a wild plant that grows in northern climates, herbal and sweet) with a surname of Hemlock (a wild plant that grows in northern climates, poisonous and closely related to Angelica, sometimes the plants cross-pollinate and what you think would be a nice herb for your salad will kill you). Angelica Hemlock.

Age: 13, Junior (woohoo, I can lie about my age!)

Gender: Female

Virgin: Yes

Relationship: No, not looking.

Sports: Cross country, running in general, but avoids any team like the plague.

Appearance/Attitude: She looks a little older then her age and can often pull off as a sixteen year old. She's also one of the rarest things ever created, a beautiful young person. She has short, straight hair and never uses any dyes.

Her attitude is a direct contrast to her appearance, she's borderline asocial and an obsessive perfectionist. She'll often be working on a paper or something for eighteen hours before she realizes she hasn't eaten. Her unsocial manner and good looks have often earned her unpleasant nicknames. She does however have enough of a heart to help people when they are in trouble even if she ignores them all the rest of the time.

Bio: Angelica was raised in a tiny country that was devastated by both the first and second world wars as well as Soviet occupation. It was once a vibrant farming community but since the collapse of the Soviet Republic the soil is hardly suitable for growing anything. She was one of the seven children in her family and worked her father's farm for a living, but due to incredible determination and borderline genius she vaulted to the top schools in the country far before her time. Due to her brilliance she was able to make it into [put school name here], on a full scholarship.

Other activities: She's signed up for the choir and has a controlled voice. Vibrato is minimal and she's somewhat mathematical in her approach, technical ability and emotional expression more then make up for her shortfalls. She also solos and on her scholarship is taking private lessons.

Instruments: Due to poor schooling and lack of money her entire life she's never been able to take up an instrument, or even afford music. She'd like to but she doesn't know what to choose.

Since this is a boarding school we should probably have roommates set up. I pity whoever gets stuck with Angelica.

I really hope "escape" isn't the word you're looking for. RPing shouldn't be about "escaping" from anything, but it should be about expanding on your real-life experiences by allowing fantasy to play a role, indulging your Id by allowing it to run rampant in a virtual world. Come to think of it, isn't that the purpose of Forums in general?

((OOC: I question whether this passage is a sample of the English language.

I agree that Pokemon is a lame idea for an RP, but I can't ignore a concept because it's bad, and as a capitalist nation I must capitalize off of other nations' hatred of the lil' bastards.

Your definition of Role Play is technically correct. I never contested that definition. Do you want a cookie for your efforts?

The world may think it's a good idea (which I doubt), but that doesn't make it so. I'm the only one pointing out the inherant flaws that will lead to this RP's downfall eventually, and as such I should go out of my way to be loud about it so that people will know these problems and adapt.

But that's just my opinion.))

Hmm, I think Findhorn's last post was very astute and we could develop some excellent separate plots, but I do see that the school could be an ideal target for a ransom situation or a terrorist attack. With the children of rulers and rich people there is little doubt that a successful ransom situation would yield quite a hefty sum, and we wouldn't have to change out of an essentially modern society.

Findhorn, the speculation you've done on my character far exceeds anything I've planned. The last Romanov would have been brilliant, but I didn't connect it with Angelica. I'll just have to try to find something that will measure up.
Findhorn
16-09-2004, 07:53
Hey, sorry, folks, I jumped in and introduced Magister LLanwerin (posts 395,396) before I came here and found out what was going on.

If you don't want Magickal, I'll delete him, say he was a trick of the light, blame him on school food (hallucinations) or insist he's a sustained metaphor.

If we keep him, I can see several ways to go. The students were all drawn to the school because one of them is The Dunno What (something important) but the authorities don't know which one -- odd events ensue which are really trials to find out. Or maybe it turns out that The Dunnowhat is not just one of them, but all of them together, so this motley bunch has to be forced to become a unit. Or possibly it's just one person, and he/she has to be slain/drained of power/forced to use power in seemingly evil way by the very person/people (staff, students) he/she has slowly learned to trust. Take it and run with it, gang.

I'd originally joined to RP in real world, but I find I'm enjoying the tension between Flick and the weird, floaty, eldritch sort of stuff that might develop. She's going to be very hard to convince.
Findhorn
16-09-2004, 09:45
Not that it has to be Magickal. If everyone likes the idea of hostages, ransom, etc, then I'll just say Flick's been traumatised by having been kidnapped before. She's still seeing things, suffering Stockholm (?) syndrome, fantasising abt her previous captor (that's where the Magister figure comes in), and if she now gets caught up in the same thing again ... whoooo-eee! So where do we go now? J.K. Rowling or Tom Clancy?

Magical is fine with me as long as we don't get too Harry Potteresque. Ever read any Charles DeLint?

I really don't like the idea of hostages in a school.

Okay, I didn't like it that much either.
Findhorn
17-09-2004, 02:29
Oh. wow, another Charles deLint reader! Not that I'm an expert, I only discovered him this year. (Considers going into "Have you read any ..." mode, but succumbs to good manners.)

I don't want to be HPish, either. So presumably we rule out the school itself -- the fabric of it, the buildings -- being magical?

And how have all these totally earthbound kids struggled along all these years without even the slightest hint of having "abilities"? Or do they already know they're gifted?

Maybe they always thought that everyone could do what they do?

We should sort this out because it affects what kind of classes they have. I mean, if you shove Flick into Telekinesis I and tell her to lift the pencil, she's just going to snort and ask what you're on and can she have some too. Somehow they have to find out they're talented.
A Memory
17-09-2004, 03:07
Another DeLint reader? I didn't actually expect that.

Yeah, Angelica has a hard time believing the stories about other planets and stuff. If someone tried to pull a "magic" card on her she'd assume they were just playing on her ignorance. I'm sure she'd stay fairly polite, but she certainly wouldn't believe a word they said from then forward.

Come to think of it she probably would believe she was being manipulated even if she saw fairly solid evidence.

I'd also bet that in such a situation the actual school would be primarily made up of true snobby rich kids, just like they appear to be.
Draconis Nightcrawlis
17-09-2004, 14:54

Several people already mentioned choir, if I remember correctly Angelica and Sophie were both going to be enrolled in it (I'm thinking Flick too, but I can't remember clearly).

General education classes such as Math would be different for the students year. Maybe have Seniors in advanced Calculus, Juniors in Calculus, Sophomores in advanced Algebra and pre-calc, Freshmen in Geometry? Physical Education would probably be divided as well.

Maybe an official schedule should be sent to each student sometime before classes start, I'd volunteer to write that up but I'm incredibly short on time and will be through the weekend. Besides that I don't know who's still with us. I haven't seen much of Davidoria, Phalinix (abandoning me in the middle of a conversation for days) or Outer Heaven MkII for a while and I still want to convince Techon to come back. :(

I apologize greatly for over complicating a fairly simple issue, it's what I'm good at.

Roll call: State your name and any special classes you signed up for if you're still with us.

I'm still in. However, Id prefere not to go the whole magic rute, and stay within the realms of the natural. Maybe the school being haunted or some sh*t, but my characters dont have any magic powers or stuff. I'm all for a ransom situation, considering 32% of buisnesses in Imitora are private security firms, and many a rich person would want their kid back, but thats just me.

Anyways, Sophie will be attending the following classes

MWF-
10:00->Pre 1800 British Literature
1:00->French II
2:00->Government
3:00->Economics

TTR-
9:25-Automotive Mechanics
1:00-Sociology
3:15-Phyisical Education

Hope no one minds doing a block schedule like this. Also, position on weapons at the school? Sophie is an avid target shooter (its a .22 target rifle, so dont worry about it being able to kill anyone), would she have a range to shoot at? Or are weapons limited to swords and bows and arrows for fencing and a archery team?

Block classes is probably a good idea, plugged myself into some classes that Imitoria used and added a few classes that Angelica would either be required to take (English, her second language, she will hate that class) and some that she would do just about anything to be able to take (Human Psychology, that's a long class).

MWF-
10:00->Pre 1800 British Literature
1:00->English
3:00->Economics

TR-
8:00-10:30->Complete Calculus
1:00->Sociology
3:15->Physical Education

R
6:45-10:00PM->Human Psychology

M-F
5:00-6:00 ->Choir

I don't see any reason to allow some weapons and not others, the gun is fine with me.

Target shooting should be fine, guns locked up and only allowed out when supervised will prevent any 'accidents'.

A Memory, will you stop doing that ;) ! First War and Peace, then Charles DeLint, now Angelica's reading my absolute favourite-of-all-time play! Not to mention the Earl Grey ...

Think I'd better promise solemnly not to go on at length in any of these imaginary Lit classes. Could be worse than kooshball ... (mild joke, guys!)

As to classes: Flick: MWF, 10.00: Pre-1800 British Literature. 1.00: English. 3.00: Art. T, Th, 10.00: Philosophy of Politics. 1.00: Textiles 3.15: Tai Chi.

You may note that she is doing no maths. In Australia, it's compulsory only until Y10. Flick dropped it in Y11 (so hard it bounced). Also Phys Ed: Flick regards Phys Ed as an extension of Creative Writing -- her excuse notes are always very imaginative -- but if it's compulsory to do the hot/sweaty bit at 3.15 on Thursdays, she'll keep out of the way and appear to conform.

I think we should have some classes everyone goes to, though, or places/times where they're all together. Ideas: Breakfast and Dinner compulsory group dining, Lunch you can turn up or pick up some pre-packed at breakfast and wander off anywhere. Possibly a one-semester class called Computers, to familiarise everybody with the system(s) the school uses (after all, it is Internation)? This would also give Angelica a chance to hide her unfamiliarity and pick up the whole deal in one gulp. BTW, is the English class English as a second language or just straight? Could also have an obligatory intro class in essay-writing, really dry, basic stuff, just one unit, everybody bitches about but attends.

PS: forgot to add choir for Flick. Wow, can't sing a note on-key in the real world!

Re magic: everybody a bit wobbly on this? I've just put in post that will let me back-flip away from magic, if necessary. However, try this on for size:

Everybody told to assemble for a compulsory first class (called something feeble like "Creative Visualisation") at Room XIII. Older student outside tells them: what you have to do is go in, NO TALKING, and use available media to describe the teacher or teachers you'll find in there. At the end of 15minutes, leave your description on your desk, go to the refectory and talk -- that part's compulsory, too.

Everybody goes in, uses computer, sketches, models in plasticine, writes by hand, whatever, and dawdles off to Refec. Where they discover ...

Each student saw something different. Flick saw Magister Llanwering; someone else saw, for example, a motherly woman in late 40s; someone else saw a cool, efficient young female; someone else saw seven people, someone saw two, someone saw a typical Coach, someone saw a drill sergeant-type. Not anyone they previously knew or knew of before this school, however.

(THIS WOULD MEAN A POST FROM EACH OF US DESCRIBING WHAT WE SAW, POSSIBLY STARTED OFF BY SOMEONE ASKING ANOTHER WHY HE/SHE HAD DONE QUICK MODEL OF JUST ONE PERSON, WHEN THERE WERE SEVERAL THERE.)(Hope this doesn't send your character right off the deep end!)

Where this is going: The staff members are not-human/more than human emotional chameleons. They reflect (physically and psychically) what each of these new students needs to help them grow. Each staff member will probably end up mentoring an individual student.

This could be one way to introduce the magic (or science fantasy, if you like). The staff could be aliens, Devas, elves, witches, whatever. Why are they doing this? See post 78. This is the first test. What each student sees tells the staff something about what part they'll play in What Is To Come.

As to What Is To Come, I've no more idea than you have. Maybe it's just a coming-of-age, finding-yourself story. Depends what we work out.

Anyway, pls write quick yes/no here, or other idea, so we can plunge on in.

Ok, bio-

Sophie Anderson

Sophie was born and raised in the Northern Province of Imitora, a very law based system that is controled by the privately owned Carabiniere. Its a near facist state, with intense feelings of loyalty to the First Speaker running high. Sophie is Catholic born and raised, yet isn't a serious practicioner of her faith. She enjoys motorcycles (crotch rockets), target shooting, punk and rap music, and sex. Her favorite drink is Stoli and Red Bull, but she'll settle for beer incase any parties go down. She has a very rebelious attitude, hence the fact that she is a 18 year old junior in High school, having been kicked out of the last five. I'll get us a pic shortly.

I suppose I can just say its a recently formed country and my character can be affected by news of radical political changes back home :P

And is this an american high school? Because everyone is talking junior high, senior high, sophomore, and we dont have them. Aslo ppl are saying different types of timetables. We should clarify the system.

The eternal-dragons and Resquide: Welcome and feel free to join in, the classes (maybe) everyone else is taking are back a page or two, feel free to put yours down now.

Don't worry about your nation affecting the story Resquide, this RP is only slightly related to the parent country. After all look at my country, I've only answered one issue since I got it.

Angelica Hemlock:

From a small farming town in a small country that only recently gained independence from Russia. The country (intentionally unnamed) is located in North-Eastern Russia. Due to warfare and rebellion as well as suppression the entire territory is littered with craters and wrecks, additionally all it's naturally resources have been completely exploited by generations of Russian occupation. Russian soldiers often come back into the territory to show that whether or not they technically own the country, they still have power and towns are often razed. This was where Angelica was born and raised.

Angelica herself is somewhat of an anomaly. The society she grew up into was predominantly masculine dominated with girls only getting a few years of schooling, but Angelica quickly surpassed everyone in her school. She continued to study long after the other girls had left and to say that she was teased for it would be an understatement. At age eleven she was forced out of the school by the town council and her father ordered her to work on the farm full-time. She always enjoyed the work in actuality, but the physical labor left her with too much time to think and she couldn't answer the questions by herself.

She began to search for any answer she could find and only weeks after she had been kicked out of school she managed to get her first book from a piteous trader in exchange for a basket of food stolen from her father's farm. The book was the Russian masterpiece "Voyna I Mir" in the Mother tongue. She loved the book even though she didn't understand much of what it said due to poor education, but she learned from that. The same trader that sold her the book had also informed her of a missionaries camp located nearly seven miles up the road and she began to run there on a daily basis to learn more.

[More history to come, I could almost write a novel on this girl and I need to stop. Description follows.]

While Angelica would definitely protest about being labeled as Russian she both looks and sounds the part. She has the typical high cheekbones and blue eyes, that give her a distinctly Russian appearance even if the bright golden hair seems slightly out of place. Though she is in actuality only thirteen she can easily pass as a sixteen year-old and needs to be able to as she tested into her Junior year at Martizar International Boarding School. She usually attempts to be polite out of consideration, but she is extremely self-centered in most ways.

Yikes, I'm done. If I don't stop sometime I never will. The Russian book title is actually "War and Peace" in it's original language (Russian).

Alex Akashi
Birthdate: June 1, 1988
Bloodtype: A
Likes: Free-reading, one-on-one competition sports, going to the firing range, techno, house, electronic jazz, and cute girls.
Dislikes: Disorganization, studying, girls who are "O.A." (over-acting), wearing his glasses, and people who throw around money as if it were nothing.
Skills: Melee weapon combat, speed-reading, ability to sleep anywhere instantly.

Youngest of the five Akashi brothers who were destined to inherit the 200 year old Kukai Foundation, the main manufacturer of -Noir-'s space stations. Born on -Noir-'s first space station, currently known as Second Miltia, Alex had a very sheltered and luxurious lifestyle, having billions to spend freely. But this life of luxury, like many other filthy rich prodigies, felt like a prison. Alex went so far as to acquire his own place, outside of the family mansion, in order to separate himself, even though he was still dependent on his family's money, being unable to work due to the fact that the threat of being disowned and dishonored hung by a thread. Once graduating from grade school, Alex followed in the steps of his four older brothers by leaving the colony and boarding at Harper Academy in Miltia, the capital of -Noir-. Here, Alex used his newly found "freedom" to isolate himself more and enjoying life without having people wait on him 24 hours a day, even though he still felt guilty in his reliance on his family's money.

Being in Harper Academy, one of the most premier schools in -Noir-, which is only second to Mahora Academy which is the oldest all girls school in -Noir-, Alex had the whole academy's facilities to his disposal. Alex is a person who could be described as very laid-back and casual. Usually seen away from the known "rich kids" clique, in which he would automatically belong to, Alex is usually seen actually studying, training for the kendo club, at the archery range, playing either tennis or badminton, pelting people from his dormatory window with a modified bolt action rifle/paintball gun (with a special adaptor so that the impact won't actually kill the target), or chasing after girls.

Makie Sasaki
Birthdate: March 7, 1989
Bloodtype:O
Likes: Family, archery, swimming, going to the beach, shopping, jazz and classical music, and girls (she wants a sister, since she grew up with 4 brothers).
Dislikes: Blood, rap, unruly and disrespectful behavior, rules, the little voice in the back of her head (her conscience), boys that remind her of her brothers,

Only daughter, among four male siblings, of the Sasaki Zaibatsu, formed during the Shivian War to provide medical supplies for the GEAR Spacy, better known as the Combined -Noir- Space Fleet. She was born in Japoness, one of the new cities that was formed several decades ago to ease the over crowding in the city of Miltia. At age 4, she and her family moved to the Second Miltia colony. At Second Miltia, and since she was the only girl in the family, Makie was enrolled into Mahora Academy Second Miltia Branch. Makie spent most of her life in the Academy, since her parents were always out on business trips. She led a simple life in the Academy, joining the various clubs and sports, hanging out with friends at the local malls, going to the (artificial) beach, and all the other activities the Academy and the colony provides. She is a member of the rhytmic gymnastics team, captain of the B Archery Team, and part of the Striding Club.

Makie is your typical highschool girl.

Note that there are no less than three different styles of class arrangement. Two have periods, but wont agree on how many, and presumably how long. The other has hours, or something.

I think we should formalise this to prevent confusion. how is that rambling?

Also, not all of us are American. Australia, for eg, does not have such thing as Sophomore. This problem could be solved by either explaining to everyone how the thing works, or just having it by grades. In that case the school would probably be a 1-12 school cos not everyone counts year 6 as part of high school, although i think everyone here is older than that :p.

Here. (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=354628&page=1&pp=15)

I think it would be easiest to deal with classes in time slots, probably just because that's what I'm used to in a University setting. It also makes more sense if you want to include night-classes or longer class periods.

I think that this school probably fits an upper age group, maybe 9-12? Considering the youngest student as far as I know is a 9, that works well enough.

Biography of Hado Suzuki:

Born from a local town just on the borderline between Russia and parts of north Asia. Due to the ongoing military presence around the border, he moved with his mother at a young age to the United Kingdom, his father staying along the borderline to due to his job as an army sergeant.

During the next few years, Hado forgot much about his homeland and its languages and considered himself now a citizen of the United Kingdom, where he was now brought up and educated. However as the years went on he began to become curious of his past, and proceeded to ask several times his mother of his past, only to get a indecisive reply.

As the answers tore him apart immensely, he eventually came to a brave decision to leave the home much to the mother’s disappointment to seek answers of his past. The following months resulted in him finding out much about his past and background, in his native country he discovered from his mothers notes. Nevertheless after several months he became satisfied with the answers he received and returned home, only to be transported to a new boarding school, in the hope that his rebellious antics were quelled.

Appearance:

His appearance and physique obtained by boxing, often leads to miss conceptions about his age, as many think he is at least 17, despite him only being 15. Due to his increased time in the U.K his accent is very common and therefore he is also mistaken for an English national if not for his reasonably tanned skin colour and jet black hair.

Time=B,C,E,F--B Day-------C Day-------E Day-------F Day
0800-0905-----=2=---------=3=---------=5=---------=6=
0910-0922----=HR=-------=HR=-------=HR=--------=HR=
0922-0932---=Break=----=Break=----=Break=----=Break=

[I really do not envy this person, I dropped World History due to scheduling difficulties. See you in Calc.]

That's all I'm doing for now, but we needed some standardization.

[Edit]

Yeah, I just think that a University style schedule makes more sense with a boarding school. Classes can be at night and classes that need to be longer (such as Science labs) can take longer time-slots but not happen as often. It may be easier to go with a straight period schedule however, maybe we should find out what people think?

You just went through a lot of work. Yikes.

I think it's probably best to use the general idea and the classes you posted as a basis. Some things like AP classes (US local concept, classes designed to test out of University classes later on) would need to be modified, and more options could be added to fulfill standards. This is a very rich school and most classes will probably be very small, more choices would be offered as long as they fit the general curriculum. For example the Literature class listed could be either that or the British Literature course that Findhorn and I want. That way we can have some more creativity with classes.

Jenna Pannove is the 15 year old, dark-haired, blue eyed daughter of Resquidian secretary general and his Ukrainian wife (deceased), she has been sent to boarding school in order to learn something of the world and politics, as well as make connections which will stand her in good stead when she enters the political field later on. She is interested in psychology and the way religion has affected human society, and her father has encouraged this on the basis that it will help her understand her political opponents. She isn’t very sporty, but does judo to keep fit and for the sense of empowerment it gives her. She enjoys singing and acting, and plays the guitar slightly in her spare time. Personality-wise, she is pragmatic and tends to apply the scientific method to life in general. She has a satirical sense of humour and makes friends and enemies easily. She is sensitive about her home country, which was founded less than 70 years before she was born, and her main arguing point with her father is his continued refusal to talk about her mother – she doesn’t mind his assumption that she will go into politics as she has no other goal.

If it is not too late to enter into the story.

Back to high school, I have already done stories with my character attending class, so I will change my role in this one if it to be allowed.

I will go to reality now. I am a nursing student. I still attend school, but I go to clinicals, blah blah you really don't want to know the rest.

My character will also be a nursing student, last year (yeah!) and be the school nurse, in training, at your school. I mean you can't have a school without a nurse. If I am too late, disregard. If not, let me know so I can give you information on her.

Deepest apologies for my absence, folks, especially after all the compliments. Housemate was "just going to need the computer for a day" for big assignment, then "just for another day" when freak hailstorm closed the Uni, then had to spend a day sorting out our useless ISP (maybe the storm hit them, too). So much for my "quick yes or no".

Anyway, I've just posted the revelation that they've got a weird class in the morning. Anyone's welcome to take it from there along the lines suggested, or spend some time reacting to the idea of the nutty class, as you choose.

should have made one more suggestion...if your student(s) are junior or senior, for example...chose the recommended class for them...i see your guys taking senior level classes while taking a class recommended for sophomores...

another example...if your student is a sophomore, it is possible for them to take a junior level class or even a freshmen level class if they chose something else, but it very uncommon for them to take a senior level class...

this is just my advice...

Okay, the big jump has been made. The door to Room XIII is opening. Your characters need to get there (though there's no reason why they can't do so lingeringly, with you describing them getting up, dressing, eating, whatever; just so long as you end up with them outside the door). If you want, you could then take them inside, where they'll see: a sketch book and pencils; brushes, canvas and acrylics; a computer terminal and keyboard; a standard exam pad and biro; a lump of plasticene/air-drying clay/mock sandstone and sculpting tools; any other medium I've forgotten, but not cameras; and one, two, many, of these people/creatures/beings.

The idea is: our next post or the one after describes what our character sees; the one after that takes them to the refectory to hear what the others saw; the one after that ... well, who knows?

I'm assuming that anyone can RP any of the teachers. They're plot devices; so if Magister L talks to you, you decide what he says and does. However, what he looks like is now fixed. Your character will fix the appearance of the teacher(s) you describe. Their purposes and personalities we'll find out as we go, I guess.

So ... Techon, thanks for standing back to let me get this bit done. You wanna have a go at it next? Anyone? Like A Memory, I'm largely allergic to responsibility. But I will do that bio. Soon. Honest.

A dog ate my timetable, but.

Are we brilliant or are we brilliant! This is fantastic! There are so many ways this could go (even into Steven King territory, though I'd prefer to stay out of there).

Techon, all I can say is (oh damn, I thought they had a BLUSH! icon) -- anyway, thank you. I hope the flaw I've just found doesn't disenchant you ...

I just realised that if our students see other students' teachers they way they see them, we're going to lose the suspense fairly quickly (I mean, I would think that even the ultra-sceptical Angelica would find it hard to explain as normal a teacher whose skin she could see through).

So, if we want to keep it from the students for a while longer that they're being tested, trialled, trained, or whatever is happening, they need to think that everything's normal except for their odd experience in Room XIII.

Which means that all their normal classes need normal-appearing teachers, at least at first. How would it be if everyone's "special" teacher looks ordinary to everybody but them? So, if Flick goes on about Llanwerin wearing that robe all the time, the rest just look at her pityingly?

Maybe for the first day, anyway; we could have a big "announcement" scene that night ... or just one announcement, with more revelations later? Like, "However much you may think you were sent here, or chose to come here, or won your way here, or just happened by, you didn't: you were summoned. By whom? Why? You'll find out ... "

BTW, can we work out who teaches what? Llanwerin/Studies in Religion? Little round woman Art/Textiles? A Memory, does "your" teacher do the British Lit? Do we have a principal/head-teacher? Techon, since it's your RP, maybe you could hop in here?

Anyway, once we've finished having them sitting over coffee deciding that everybody else is crazy, how about having a normal-appearing teacher come to call them to the normal class they expected to attend?

Walking to orientation. I have a gorup of four, how many "real" people are there in this anyway, and can they all talk together without creating Flick-esque confusion?

If not we shud probably slow it down and have a time-frame, so if not enough people have posted since your last post to answer all your questions and advance the plot, then you shouldn't post.

Alex and Makie are a problem - they can have a conversation by themselves, and someone else might want to answer something in the middle, but they'd have already moved on.
Findhorn
25-09-2004, 10:44
Many kilometres later ...

I thought we were walking to breakfast? But then, Flick's just had a Life-Changing Experience, so she's not really with it ...

Give -Noir's- dual-character thing a bit more time; I use that technique often in another RP, and it works out ok if others write 'around' it (eg, "Did I overhear you saying to Makie just then that ... ?"). Another good trick is to have your character writing or receiving e-mails, or learning something through the media. One guy uses a talkback radio shock-jock.

From the latest posts, apparently, there's an Orientation session due soonish. Fine, that works. But ... Questions:
What are they going to see?
What are they going to hear?
Who are they going to see/hear it from?

Q1, because: are they going to walk in and see the weird variety of beings who are really the staff, or are they just going to see a common-or-garden faculty? How many are there, anyway? Are our 'special' teachers mixed in, disguised, with ordinary humans?

Q2, because: We haven't yet worked out why the students are there, so what are we going to tell them? Or will it be a straight orientation -- lights out at 10pm, no running in the hallways, kind of thing? (We could have someone saying, "Students, you are here for a purpose," which most of our characters would just take as the usual idealistic BS you get at these gatherings, but sometime soon we're going to have to sort things out.)

Q3, because: We really do need a head-teacher. It has to be someone who can be in fairly constant contact (it's no good if everybody's waiting for something to happen and the one who can make it happen can't get to a computer). Myself, I'd go for Techon. The RP was his idea and the 'teacher' he's created is imposing enough to face down the stroppiest student.

Flick's experience, BTW, was basically to give me some lee-way. I think the shadowy figures were in some way 'power' aspects of the beings she saw. I was vaguely thinking Archangels -- Raphael and Uriel? -- or possibly the little woman will turn out to be a Crone manifestation of the Triple Goddess. Anyway, fundamentally Flick needs arcane or spiritual Knowledge (the figure with the book) and to sort out her attitude to Death (the one with the sword). Which is quite an ask for a thoroughly mundane kid from Sydney.
Findhorn
25-09-2004, 11:16
Forgot I'd done a sort of bio of Flick at the start of this. She's developed a bit in my mind since then. Anyway, what she looks like:

Dishwater blonde, blue-grey eyes (large), darker eyebrows and eyelashes. Height abt 155cm (is that abt 5 foot 4in?) and small-boned. But not skinny: has breasts, buns, actual waist and hips. Skin so fair she sunburns under the full moon (practically).

Hair used to be long and wavy but she shaved it all off (best friend/chemotherapy). Now it's growing back finer than ever and in embarrassing ringlets, the way it was when she was little. She ties it back with whatever comes to hand, which makes her look younger than ever (think pigtails, fountains.)

Despite hating organised sport, she's reasonably ept, thanks to holidays with dozens-of-cousins. Can stay upright or alive in any of the following situations: swimming, surfing, sailing, rowing, skateboarding, rollerskating, ice-skating, bicycling, camping.
Findhorn
25-09-2004, 14:26
Sudden inspiration (result of tonight's chili con carne?): If the beings went to all this trouble to find out how the students saw them, then presumably they'll get together at some stage to discuss what they've learned. So how about we have a 'staff' meeting? It might help us clarify what the staff are up to. Like ...
"I told you he was the one!" said (X), proudly, colours flashing under his skin as he absorbed Murdock's work. "He's gone straight to the essence."
more more more more next post
"Flick will work out," Llanwerin insisted. "She's recognised me for a disguised power. She even caricatured my disguise, the cheeky little brat."
"But she totally missed the point with me," mourned Clotho. "She thought I was knitting!"
more more more more next post
"What about my poor little Makie?" cut in a sweet voice ...
more more more more next post
I don't mean I want to write your stuff; these are just examples. But if each person tries for a sort of ... I dunno, comment on the experiment? ... we might get nearer to planning where we go from here ... ?

Draconis N, am I imagining that you've been hinting that your humans share the planet with elves (or vice versa)? Niiiice. Does your name suggest dragons there, too?

BTW, I'm not trying to push any system of beliefs. I belong to the (made up for the purposes of this post) Church of the Stained-Glass Window -- you look out through the blue glass bit, I look out through the red glass bit, we're still looking out at the same thing. Whatever it is.

One thing is sure evident, though: that it's such a pleasure to write with so many talented folk.

actually...how the forum is set up...there is no plausible way to involve a war with large numbers of units...it is possible to do a smaller character RP but it is hard to RP a large 100,000 man war 'cause no one could calculate losses accurately or fairly...(or something to that extent)

And the prize for most enigmatic post goes to --Noir-- ... ;)

As to where we are: I'm under the impression, like everyone else, that in our own confused ways we're wandering off to the Orientation session, where I think Techon was going to RP a headmaster boring the socks off everyone with basic Dos and Don'ts, while the staff sat around looking unimpeachably ordinary.

Which doesn't mean Techon can't come up with a sting in the tail (tempt, tempt). After which maybe we could actually go to a lesson. However, I agree with Resquide we should have some notions in common for further RP.

This is what I think we've got so far: first up, some not-human, possibly super-human, beings with a benevolent purpose towards humans, particularly the humans at Maritzar. (I've been calling them Devas to myself, though not meaning the ones that just make vegetables grow better.)

Subsequent posts have made it clear that we're operating in a space-faring era not too much in advance of the present -- ie they have technology we have already heard of as possibilities.

It has also emerged that our humans have encountered at least two other species (dragons and elves). But these two are still fairly familiar (through human mythology. Maybe they visited Earth in pre-history). The other kids may not know this yet; however, I would think that, as children of the big corporations, some would.

That's what we've got. Ideas not yet fully firmed up are: that the (devas) called/forced/lured/tricked our characters to Maritzar; thus, the kids are Chosen.

That there may be some challenge ahead of them, possibly involving physical or psychic danger.

That several of them are already aware of some unrelated danger or serious complication in their lives (Angelica, Salazar, Makie).

So what we need to do is figure out why the (devas) got them there. OK, here's an idea, and note, it's just that: an idea. Totally open to alterations, complete rejections. Just begging for more suggestions. Right ...

On the basis of Techon's wonderfully exotic entity, could it be that humans are about to meet their first really alien aliens? And that the (devas) know?

The (devas) might then be (powerful, possibly spiritual or magical) entities associated with each of the human planets -- I'm trying to leave this fuzzy so people can play around with the idea -- who fear that an unplanned First Contact might harm humanity. (Some humans will want to fight the aliens; others may want to worship them; either way not good for mature species.)

The (devas) want to find AND TRAIN humans who could deal successfully with the aliens. They'd be trying to encourage flexibility in their special students (wish them luck with Flick!); also trying to help them deal with existing hurts, because, under the stress of contact, un-integrated humans will fly apart ...

Maybe the aliens have a devastating First Contact in their past, so they want to go very gently too? Maybe they're already working with the "staff"?

Which could lead to our characters coming into conflict with two sets of beings older, wiser, more powerful, both saying "easy ... easy" when our kids feel a little more adventurousness would work better? (Murdock's deep awareness of space useful here?)

There's scope there for confrontation with Makie's military pursuers -- are they the sort who want to blast aliens out of the sky? Can kids stop them through impressive family contacts?

Also scope for venal politicians (Jenna's Dad is, of course, honest?) jockeying for benefit for their particular mob, while kids unite in more direct, open approach?

You could write this as Robert Heinlein action stuff ("Let's go steal a spaceship!") or go totally mawkish adult CS Lewis (Earth's deva is evil, rejects the Light) or any way you want. (BTW: I don't hate CS Lewis; Narnia lives; but he did do some awful SF.)

Please don't think I'm pushing this scenario on you. It's slapped together --changed even while writing -- to give us something to play with.

I'm inferring from what Techon and I wrote there will probably be some kind of demonstration at the orientation. Probably something only our characters and not the other students will notice. Mind you my "deva" was against it, but I'm not sure what it was going to be about.

Which doesn't mean Techon can't come up with a sting in the tail (tempt, tempt). After which maybe we could actually go to a lesson. However, I agree with Resquide we should have some notions in common for further RP.

Sounds about right. I think that the rest of the school is primarily there for a cover and most professors/staff/students are normal people. The planning must have been going on for some time if the headmaster is a "deva." It also could mean that our group isn't the first to have some encounter with them. On the other hand it could just be that they've been waiting for the proper assembly for a long time and only just obtained it with our little "Chosens".

So what we need to do is figure out why the (devas) got them there. OK, here's an idea, and note, it's just that: an idea. Totally open to alterations, complete rejections. Just begging for more suggestions. Right ...

Quite a few possibilities or subplots that might well work. How much alien encounters have our future tech people had, I know that Techon has mentioned aliens before. I don't know how they'd be classified, still super-beings are something beyond any of their experiences.

Now stop being so brilliant, you're making me look bad. :)

or as entities from a unique dimension, separate from the physical plane, therefore it is normally impossible to come into contact with them...but Martizar H.S. is special because it might be one of the few places where it is possible to come into contact with them...

I like this idea. Aliens and Devas (devi?) it is then, if no-one has any objections.
Jenna's dad is honest in an "Honest John" kinda way - except he doesn't really do much except official appearances, press releases and paperwork.
I think Jenna will be more along the "constantly niggling at facts" lines, because she can't stand not knowing stuff. I think she'll take both the supernatural peoples in her stride, because her fascination will overcome her fear. She doesn't have a salazar/makie type Event in her past, but as you may have guessed, her Deva is kind of personal... which explains why she was chosen, really.

Hmm... theres a thought, can someone be half-deva? If that would wreck stuff i can always change it.

I don't think we're going cs-lewis direction. I think the Aliens should just be... well, alien. Inexplicable. having a hard time understanding us, and since the deva's are less narrowminded than humans they are trying to act as intermediarys because the possibilities for misunderstanding are so huge.

Aliens have been grossly mis-represented in almost all the SF things I've seen. The chance that they would be similar enough to us that cultural misunderstandings are limited to the "humourous" category is miniscule. Think - they've EVOLVED on a completely different path to us. their TRILOBYTES must'v been different from ours, let alone their equivalents of mammals/reptiles/insects whatever. We'll explain the language barrier away by saying the Devas have worked something out with translatory thingies, but the rest...

well, the psychological issues are gonna be huge. The physical differences will be taken in their stride because we can't really imagine something too different, but mentally...

I can't take kudos from people when most of my suggestions were probably plagiarised. The aliens sensitive abt first contact turn up, I think, in several Star Trek series and are central to Anne McCaffrey's unfortunately-named Decision at Doona. The devas are a combination of CS Lewis and the odd little settlement in Scotland after which my nation's named. My only contrib is to give Earth two and have them in permanent conflict.

And yes, I did mean -Noir's- blank posts. Fell in with both feet, did I? The biter bit?

Quote (re devas) : ... or as entities from a unique dimension, separate from the physical plane, therefore it is normally impossible to come into contact with them...but Martizar H.S. is special because it might be one of the few places where it is possible to come into contact with them...

Combine this with Techon's post that turned the lights off and you'd have an approximation of "haunted"; the division between the dimensions ("astral plane", or whatever) is weak in some places ... or there's the idea that "hauntings" are "time-slips", where the observer travels back to the event ...

I'd like to see us play round with this some more. Techon seems to favour a more supernatural feel. If we went for that then you could have it that the reason our characters are there is to find out what is doing the haunting and why -- previous attempts having been unsuccessful because they didn't throw the net wide enough; this bunch is a last-ditch effort because the weakness or time-slips or whatever are happening more often ...

The advantage would be that we'd have a lot less explaining to do, "ghosts" being a fairly secure hook to hang a story on, so the thread wouldn't become unmanageably long.

Anyway, I'll get Flick out of her current daze now. Sorry abt my absences, there's a lot of competition for this computer and I don't have a sure time to get on. If ever I'm holding things up, someone please take her over. I can compensate when I get back.

Me too, Resquide. I've been waiting for input on that, and changed direction several times to accommodate what others seemed to want, because it's not my thread. Okay, until someone alters it (Techon?) here's the back-story I'm now working with:

Schools like Maritzar exist on every planet. Though appearing to operate as conventional, somewhat snobby, boarding schools, their staffs include beings who summon to them (psychically) the people in each generation most likely to help their planet, and humanity generally, develop to its best (noblest?) potential. Usually the beings merely help the (chosen) children sort out any quirks of character or life experience that would interfere with their development as a power for good. The schools are always sited at some spot on the planet where the beings can draw on the psychic strength of the planet itself (eg, Glastonbury? Uluru?).

HOWEVER, such spots have to be places where the 'wall' between the worlds of real life and the supernatural is thinnest. The "staff" make sure the flow is controlled. But at Maritzar, the wall has (been breached? worn through?). The local staff tried and failed to repair the weakness. Desperate, they called on their fellows on every other planet for help.

One came from each planet. They learnt that the breach could not be mended without human aid (since the wall is maintained largely by human belief in it). Combining, they probed the settled planets for humans strong enough to help.

UNFORTUNATELY, the human ability to use their psychic powers is age-related. Unless they are trained or deliberately expose themselves to psychic force (by such means as developing their creative/artistic powers), humans' ability "closes" around the age of 18, just the way the bones of the physical skull do (you know, the soft spot on babies' heads?).

THUS, though there were many humans strong enough psychically, many were too young, were already too "threaded into" their societies to be easily removed, or were simply physically incapable of helping; their bodies would not be able to survive the demands of psychic battle.

THEREFORE, the new and in many cases reluctant students who are our characters are the only ones who meet all the criteria. Regardless of what they want to do with their lives, right now they are the last hope. Working with the staff, they MUST close the gap.

The staff have to: convince them that the "other side" exists; help them to push back the entities that have already leaked into the real world; find out how best to use the students' various strengths to close the gap in the wall.

The staff is divided on how fast and how hard to push them. If anyone has a gift for writing oozing evil, now is the time to use it. The worse things get, the more pressure on our kids. I could see it with the "other side" lot being simply mindless consumers of psychic strength, like termites, or we can have an intelligent evil entity directing it, if that's the way your imagination goes. (INPUT NEEDED HERE!)

So I would see our next posts as showing the kids accepting, however reluctantly, that they are entangled with something they can't explain and hearing the staff's explanation of why they're here (one-on-one or group?).

From there we'd be moving to training in their particular ability and then to the climax in which they close the gap. We could kill off some staff in the training process, or have a kid die and let the player RP as his or her teacher figure. I'm imagining the actual closing as a lot of glowing lines of power weaving together as other-siders attempt to blast/cut them, but we can work that out later. (If a kid dies his/her ghost could appear at the vital moment and have everyone fear that, because they're now a ghost, they'll help the enemy -- but, of course, friendship is stronger ...)

Well I was trying to keep my motives secret, but now I guess my input is needed. Martizar is a rift to a higher plane, were beings from the order come down to our plane, and teach the students of their destiny.

The shadows are merely indications about who is a chosen one, and that is their only purpose.

The training is meant for the students to become leaders, give them more enhanced bodies and minds, so they will be able to become great leaders and revoloutionists in their future.

The training for the students will either make, or break them. They will either become the great leaders that they are being trained to be, or they will fail and become corrupt and evil. They do not exactly get to chose their path, it is not if they start sliding they can save themselves, unless they are destined to save themselves. Their destiny is set, either they will go good, or they will go evil, its not their decision although it seems to them like it is.

I have basically round this up from my experience with Sage Cornellis, and Peral, A Memory (Angelica), or Traha as I like to still call her, already knows of him. He had gone throught he exact training that these kids are going through, and he is quite a guy.

He worked for the order for six years of his so far seventeen year old life, he was trained much earlier then these ones are. He got so powerful he could do anything, he was imortal, invincible, and incredible. Upon such power he atracted a demon to him, and he became corrupt, eventually leaving the order.

These new students are a new type of breed for these chosen ones. They are now meant to not only protect good itself, but bring fights back to evil, such as excorsisms of demons, and other spirits. It would be very interesting to have a few, not all, fall evil, and it would be interesting for one, no more, to become possessed by a spirit.

My plan in the end of this RP is to have the students become defenders of life, love, and overall goodness in the world.

I'm going to have a hard time with this. I feel that Angelica would have a hard time being either "good" or "evil." Not to mention the problems I have with predestination, but I'll do my best.

First off, feel free to call me Traha, it fits me much better then "A Memory." One of these days I'll have to get the mods to revive that nation. Secondly the students are all starting a little bit late if Sage's experience is any example, it sounds like our devas are playing a dangerous game going for more power by sacrificing control. What frightens them enough to take such a gamble?

I don't beleive in destiny either, but this works out.

Hallelujah, a Sign! Like A Memory (Traha is certainly more mellifluous) I have trouble with predestination, but, hey, if we can't write our way round a minor plot complication, what are we here for, eh ;) ?

So, if any student can't get the hang of any particular aspect, it's not Pass/Fail, it's Pass/Die or Pass/Become Evil? (This better not apply to Maths, or Flick is a goner already.)

Looking forward to joining the Forces of Light, provided they can put up with the occaional sarky comment.

sounds like an anime plot...especially the part about being "defenders of life, love, and overall goodness in the world."

------

Traha? where does that come from?
reminds me of the word Traho, trahere, traxi, tractum: to drag*

*someone guess which language it is from...

Hello, this is a crazy idea I know, but would anyone be interested in RPing highschool, I mean like where you can be anyone and stuff, you can be in any activity, ranging from band, to football to some sports I made up on my own. This is just an idea, and I just want to know if anyone would be interested.

I've seen many school RP's, but never about high school, which should make it easy for a lot of people to relate to.

interesting..
