Step right up boys and girls, women and men, and partisans of all kinds, this is the last peanut gallery for this presidential campaign. I was watching that silly Smeagal/Gollum cartoon during the instructions to the crowd on C-SPAN, so I missed one of my favorite parts. I did see the dean or somebody whore for Arizona state and use a native american who looked annoyed to demonstrate diversity. ("See her. This school is built on he peoples land and now she goes here and gets a 4.0, so we're cool" Over simplified, don't argue it I know I'm mostly wrong.

Ah, the three minutes make things look interesting span. Fire up your one liners

This is something I've never understood. Why haven't we implemented a simple flat-tax scheme? Why all the loopholes and credits and such, when we could just set it to some figure (10% of gross income, perhaps?) and be done with it?

Because:
a) That would tax the poor MORE than they are now taxed, to get the same amount out.
b) Tax credits and whatnot are intended to encourage specific kinds of behaviours that are good for the economy/country/community. Things like having children, donating to charities, saving for your retirement. The big problem is that we're not specific enough - business expenses for example is too broad a term, but one that should be in there (allowing you to not pay taxes on 'income' that essentially goes back to the business, meaning you essentially never got the income in the first place).

It's a complex system, but it's better than a flat tax for a capitalist economy (flat works fine in socialist economies, where the government has better ways to stimulate portions of the economy and whatnot, but not in a relatively capitalist economy like ours). We need to fix the enforcement mechanism, and close some of the major loopholes that nobody seems to want to close -- democrat OR republican.
