"Good evening, I'm Mark Rather," the anchorman says. "Today's top story: A freighter of unknown origin entered Commonwealth territorial waters earlier this evening. The freighter was met by a patrol boat of the Maritime Defense Forces and boarded for inspection. Five inspectors were allowed onto the ship, and upon examination, found a cache of illegal drugs estimated at 1.5 tons. The crew responded by attacking and killing the inspectors as they made their way back to their ship."
The scene changed to an aerial view of a freighter on fire in the ocean.
"A destroyer in the vicinity of the incident responded to the patrol boat's request for assistance, and after recieving orders from the Maritime Directorate, fired a missile at the freighter, sinking it. The government is still unsure of the origins of the vessel, and has released no further information."

At approximately 1430 hours Commonwealth Mean Time, an unknown freighter, of unknown origin and without proper markings, passed into the territorial waters of the Commonwealth, 3 nm NNE of Nord Cilla. Upon inspection by a coastal patrol vessel, the unknown freighter was found to be carrying 1.5 tons of illicit drugs. There are samples available for inquiry, salvaged from the wreck. The crew fired upon and killed the inspectors, after which the vessel tried to escape our waters. A nearby frigate, the FSS Sea Dawn fired warning shots, recieved no answer to hails, and was fired on with several RPGs. The Maritime Directorate authorized the use of force, and the vessel was sunk by a missile from the frigate.
The Commonwealth will take any means to defend its citizens from the effects of illegal and illicit drug sales and trafficking.

Lt. Commander Miranda Ramius walked into the chamber briskly, followed by her Executive Officer Lt. David Breshnye and TAO Lt. Eliza Craunau. They stopped in the center of the room, facing the six members who made up the Directorate. In the center, the Premier called the room to order. She and her subordinates snapped to attention.
"Lt. Cdr. Miranda Ramius, Captain of the FSS Sea Dawn reporting as ordered," she said.
"At ease," the Premier said. "You may give your report at any time."
"Yes sir," she responded. Lt. Breshnye began to set up for their report as she and the TAO seated themselves. As per military law, the Captain of a vessel was barred from any form of cross-examination save for a full courts-martial. It was one of those perks that Captain Ramius didn't truly appreciate.
Later...
"And how were these drugs salvaged?" a Congressman asked.
"The Sea Dawn is equipped with a rescue submerisble and a diving crew. Our vessel had just come in from maneuvers." He shifted his notes, "The divers retrieved the drugs, sir."
"And how do you know they're drugs, not just pharmaceuticals like it has been suggested?" asked another.
"The evidence was turned over to FSB agents, whose labs confirmed it as uncut cocaine, sir," the Lieutenant answered.
And so the interrogation continued...

"It is the conclusion of the Directorate," read the Premier. Ramius and her subordinates were standing with her at attention.
"That the actions of the officers and crew on the 28th of November, in the year of the Common Era 2008, were wholly in concordance with standing orders of the Maritime Forces and under the express sense of duty to the protection of the Motherland. The evidence supporting that the vessel was transporting illicit drugs is indisputable. The Sea Dawn is hereby awarded the Unit Citation of Valor for their actions, and Captain Ramius, it is our sincere joy to bestow upon you the Order of the Red Star."
On the jet back to Nord Cilla, Miranda still couldn't believe what had just happened. She figured they'd reprimand her, at the worst, strip her of command. But that hadn't happened. Her actions had actually been rewarded. She sighed and looked out of the window. The rolling plains of gold underneath were like a yellow ocean, and it gave her a yearning for her own ship. Orders were to be underway immediately and join the Boudicca Task Force. She sighed and looked away from the window.

A vessel will be allowed passage into our waters to conduct a diving expedition. However, the dive will be accompanied by Maritime Defense Force divers to monitor their actions. Any agression taken within these waters will be seen as a hostile act upon the Commonwealth.

"So let me get this straight, someone authorized a bribery and thereby theft of a Battlehawk vessel, the MV Tomorrow if the records are correct, and then they proceeded to try and smuggle millions of dollars worth of drugs past Commonwealth security?"
Inside the Montana Inc World Headquarters many meetings occurred behind closed doors, often times with the best anti-bugging equipment working to its fullest. Simply because the MBSA and Montana had an understanding, didn't mean that they would trust each other, and when it came to the hush hush aspects of both, knowledge was power.
"Yes Mr. Montana."
"I swear you cannot find good help anymore. You allow a few promotions and then one of those fuck ups allows someone to try and sneak through coast guard. Doesn't anyone try and play by the rules anymore? You set up a bribed network, or use the proper paperwork."
He looked over the report more carefully.
"See like this, labeling it medical supplies, that was a good idea, the bad idea was shooting the inspectors, or hell, allowing them to come aboard. Then firing on a vessel that could sink them. Thank god that damn Captain is dead, if he wasn't I would teach him a thing or two. Is there any way they can trace it back to us?"
"Unlikely Mr. Montana, while the drugs were mostly grown in Paradisa there are shipments out of there for nearly everything all the time, we just have to make a quick piracy report, saying X tons of medical cocaine were stolen, and if anyone figures out where it was made, we can say it was on route to a legal buyer and got stolen by pirates. The ocean is a big place, bust seeing as The Battlehawk nation is looking at going to war over this, incident, the drugs will probably be overlooked as the Commonwealth prepares for war."

He wondered what in the hell those guys needed to be doing in the Free United States. Rammsteinburg had never dealt with that country before -- why now all of a sudden? Of all the people for The Great Warlord Republic to send why criminal investigators? This was bizarre. Of course, he knew not to question orders and reluctantly provided the men transportation.
The message from the UH-60 reached MOW-75. Volkinov had a message sent back, informing them that there was a large enough flight deck to land the helicopter on the frigate-sized vessel.

Antonio was doing his best to run a multinational corporation, and little incidents like his drugs, grown in Mokastana, now being inspected by the commonwealth of FUS were not making the job any easier. Looking over the reports with his well trusted and small personal staff they quietly tried to form a plan. IN the backround a TV showed some international news agency as some reporter claimed to have information that a Battlehawk plane nearly entered commonwealth airspace without clearance.
"Hmm, the situation does seem to be mounting....perhaps we can offer it a little....push. Any known pirates in the area?"
Montana Inc had occasionally hired pirates here and there, quietly of course, to do the small things like take out a competitors shipping lane...or to simply make a distraction away from what was really happening.
"Let's see, the Mediterranean..." one of his staff began looking over a list he kept hidden on his PDA. "hmm, there seems to be one cell still active, unfortunately with recent crackdowns on piracy they are hard to contact, and will probably want a big paycheck."
"If that shipment gets back to us then we may have to pay more. Find them, and tell them that I want them to do a few attacks on Commonwealth and Battlehawk positions in the area. Make them look instigated by the other side. See if we can't get some chaos brewing."

The Balkan's Fury, a Osa Class missile boat, had received a message from the home port, for pirates on the high seas, at least these pirate, keeping tabs on shipping around the high seas was very important, but radar was to expensive and to easily destroyed, so most intel came from informants inside the local navies and businesses. They got to keep their families, and the pirates got their bounty.
This small group was often called the Balkan's Clan, they had barely a few ships, but enough to cause trouble on the seas. Three Komars, two Osas and one Tarantual that cost then quite a bit. In addition to these they had a few river based gun boats for running down slow rich ships.
"The message request that we raise the Commonwealth flag and engage a Battlehawk or Rammsteinburg ship. Sinking it preferred. Bounty will be delivered on return to port." The captian turned to his crew, "Sounds like we got ourselves a job. Lets go!"

Balkan's Fury rode out into the sea, looking for a fight to pick. Being a small missile boat amongst naval powers almost seemed like suicide, but that was life for the Balkan's Clan. Only this time there were two hostile fleets and if they started shooting each other then the Clan would get enough funding to get up to date warships, enough of this 1960s crap, they might get real warships, boats capable of running down luxury liners, and maybe even be able to defend themselves against the Commonwealth navy. That would be the day...
The captain came back from daydreaming when a crew member pointed out a long range radar target. One of the foreign vessels was going to be in range, so far from the enemy ships reactions they had not been noticed.
Only a few more kilometers till they would be within firing range.

The pirates talked amongst themselves trying to sound like a real naval crew. Unfortunately their lack of training combined with lack of knowing proper terminology resulted in what would be a poor strike, but they had the element of surprise.
At about 76 km out from one of the outer ring ships of the Battlehawk Fleet two P-15s launched from the small vessel towards a single Battlehawk ship.

The small missile boat let loose the other two P-15s on board and began to turn and run away from the incoming missiles. Sadly there was no way that the old boat from the 1960's would be able to survive any modern weapons. Especially aircraft based ones.
"Captain we are about to be blown to hell! Abandon ship!"
The Captain pulled out his pistol and shot the man who just yelled that.

The Balkan's Clan had sacrificed their most idiotic Captain to the Battlehawk fleets in exchange for two new hunter ships and an untold sum of money.
They were done with the contract, however if they needed it they had a few other "Captains" that they would not mind trading for money and power.
However they were not Montana's Inc primary concern, what was their concern was the people who those drugs were meant to get to. The contact was only referred to as "Ivan" weather it was a fake name or not was not important, what was important was that Nicoli now had to send an encrypted email to him explaining that the shipment was destroyed by Commonwealth forces and now they would need to find another way to ship it in country.

"This appears to be official cargo," he pointed to certain crates. "But these," he pointed to others, their doors pried open. "We've already counted over a dozen of these containers." He led the way over, levering another one open and shining his light inside. "Yeah, this one too." He led the way inside and picked up what appeared to be a ceramic doll. His own Akula had been used by Montana Inc on a few occasions to clean up messes that 'former' executives had made. Usually things as simple as sinking freight or in one case, a Vice President's Luxury yacht.
However this mission was far from simple, they had to get past the numerous fleets in the area, and blow the hull of a sunken freighter containing supplies that could be used to destroy Montana Inc.
If that happened, well it is best to not let them happen.
It approached the waters with caution, miles from the target zone, sonar revealed that many enemy ships were in the area, this would not be easy. Montana better up the price on this job....

Getting the right speaker were a pain, but after shelling out a few thousands he had managed to get three of these custom built decoys, sounding like an akula...or at least close enough to draw attention. He had never tested them against modern navies before, but there was a first time for everything.
The Decoy was launched and began moving a new knots faster then the sub used to be going, hopefully the alpha would chase it down and pass the sub, allowing for a slip and run.
"Captain, high-probability contact!" the sonar officer reported. "It's moving towards the coast, along the ridgeline."
"Found them," the Captain said. "Match course, flood tubes 1 and 2, but keep the doors closed."
"Aye sir," his crew went about their duties.
"Sir...wait," the sonar officer said, listening to the underwater minutaie. "I've got...two contacts..."
"A decoy?" the Captain asked.
"I'm not sure sir...if so, I can't determine which is the real sub or not."
"Figure it out, quickly!" the Captain barked.

Remote Montana Inc Airfield, Greal
"We got the drugs loaded up and ready to sent to The Free United States. Waiting for confirmation that the route is clear."
"Copy that."
The plan was this, until the plan got to commonwealth airspace it would be labeled as a Montana Inc cargo flight of Greal produced goods to a buyer in Katangara. They had already been approved by the government to enter the airspace as long as they didn't look too suspicious, from their a traffic controller had been paid to miss the fact that they had diverted from the normal route and into the mountains.
Once in the mountains they were to keep low and under the radar until they entered FUS airspace, and continue undetected, as of now the man who was suppose to be in charge of Areal patrols in the area was having dinner with a very important member of Montana Inc. Nicoli Kuskev himself.
No doubt an agreement would be reached, and when it was, the plan would take off, and hopefully get into the country without a hitch.

Colonel Polenin looked at the duty roster and frowned. One of the flights had been delayed. It wasn't a super-important one; a routine patrol of the mountain pass, but as the commander of the fighter squadrons, he was curious. Calling the base commander, General Gregorov, Polenin was informed by his secretary that he had already left for the evening. Damnit, he thought, ready to rip into his superior when he got the chance.

However they had to keep their heads down in this valley. These kinds of stunts were only pulled when Montana was out of options. Some inside the illegal Departments were wondering how much longer Montana would continue to keep them alive, after all, only 15% of Montana Inc's revenue was made from illegal sales, but of course that was also tax free money. In a nation where socailism ran rampant, it was always good to have tax free money.
Only a half hour more and they would be out of this valley, of course he last stretch was the hardest one, or at least the most suspicious. By changing their information they were to appear as a civilian cargo plan from Katangara who got lost. Records at the Grom Airport would show a cargo plan with those marking scheduled to land about an half an hour ago. Due once again to the men in Katangara who looked the other way.

The cargo plane landed on the private airfield watching as the pick up vehicles showed up and surrounded the stopping plane. Negotiations had been under way ever since the cargo ship was blown, Montana had had reached the agreement that for a quarter the cost of the original drugs, they would get an emergency resupply. In total they were paying 125% bulk price for the same amount of drugs, but it was that or let the customers get antsy, and antsy customers had no loyalty when it came to brand power.
As the trucks came behind the now stopped plane. The ramp was lowered revealing dozens of crates, as well as seven men armed with fully automatic M4 carbines.

"Splashes in the water! Depth Charges Captain!"
"Damn it..." the captain's mind raced, he was supposedly in international waters, and this was an act of war against an unidentified target. So many protocols the fleet was not following, like identify what you are shooting.
Dive? We should dive, no what if we hit the bottom or an unidentified rock formation? also explosions deeper were more dangerous if we got hit. No run.
"All ahead full! Run from them. Then try for communications depth!"
His mind was racing, ok, think, he had ID for three alias, Captain Billy Sanchez, Mokastana National Police Force...or Captian James Smith, Greal Naval Intelligence....or Captain Walter Collins, Sumerian Military Intelligence.
He grabbed his underwater phone and pulled out the info for Captain Walter Collins.
"This is Captain Walter Collins, of the Sumerian Navy. Cease fire! Cease fire! We are in international waters! You are declaring war on the hegemony and ODECON by attacking a sovereign ship Lord Sumguy!"
He hated that they put him into a corner like this. Now he had to open communication with them. This was not going to be easy to escape. he put his hand over the phone and looked to his XO, and spoke quietly...
"When we get back to comm depth, tell our commanders what has happened, notify them Chipper code alpha."
"Aye aye sir"
Just then the first explosion hit the sub. He didn't bother listening to any response from the phone, or anyone out there who might have heard. Luckily they were running so the explosions were not nearly as effective, but still very dangerous.
"Captain! we got damage in the rear, it looks like-"
Another shake from an explosion knocked the captain off his feet...
"Damn it! Dive! Dive! Turn on the speakers and play crumbling ship!"
One of the beautiful things about owning your own sub was that you could install huge speakers inside the ship and no military commander would ask you why, but if anyone did he would always say his crew loves the occasional rave party. Of course they were installed for moments just like this. The speakers blared throughout the sub as the sounds of tearing metal played, reverberating around the ship as on occasional scream was heard under crushing metal.
"OPEN TORPEDO TUBE FOUR! LAUNCH BIG BANG! NOW!"
Big Bang was his other ace in the whole, in reality is was just another decoy, but one far more annoying. It played high and low tones at what appeared to be random. The goal was to try and play tones that would damage most sensitive sonar sensors, but really it was best at screaming high pitch noises into the ears of the people listening. Annoying them to the point of inefficiency...
Another explosion ruptured the sub as it began to dive, playing the sounds of crunching metal as it went.

Underneath, the last charges failed to detonate, sinking into the murky depths.

"Pass this along to the subs and destroyers after them..."

A sonar operator had written a quick note to pass to the captian, most crew were either wearing earplugs or other sound blocking equipment due to the loud nature of the speaker system. The continued going deeper playing the sound of crunching metal, that and with Big Bang harassing sonar it was hard to hear anything under the water.
Play the crashing bottom noise.
Then kill all sound, leave Big Bang

We will go below it and try and slip out

sonar annoyances
Within a few minutes the crushing sounds faded and a loud series of Thud's played out into the sub. Then all sounds went quiet. They were to run on complete silence. Hopefully they could slip out undetected while the enemy fleets played track down the commander. Of course no true man existed, all he was was paperwork in the sub, something to pass them if he needed to do something on shore quickly, or get out of a pickle like that.
Well, hopefully they think the sub was sunk.

The Akula's BIG BANG had died down after a few minutes, for its high and low frequencies had quickly killed the small battery inside. Now it just sank to the bottom like the decoy and the depth charges.
"Sir, do you think they fell for the sinking?" the XO whispered to the Captain.
The Captain shrugged and walked over to his sonar operators who now were able to use their equipment again. The sub had been crawling along the bottom of the ocean quietly using more momentum then actual push until the Big Bang had been finished up. Then they stopped once the timer was about to run out. By the time the sounds were done, the Akula was quietly idling in the deep waters listening for sounds from the fleet.

"play some of the crush, make it sound like hull snapped when that thing hit us. Launch Big Bang two into the water, don't turn it on yet, use the crush noises to hide its launch. Prepare to run....Now what hit us? was it a dud? and where did that sonar blast come from?"
"The object that latched on us, Captain."
"Damn it what are they doing?"
ooc: the racing one...? i can send a link, but it would only be me, you and ustio north...though that'd be pretty balanced...
ic:
"It's pinging!" shouted the sonar operator. "Sending strong signal."
"Get the Battlehawk and our own submarine onto the transmission, have them zero in on it..."
"Sir. Hull crushing...perhaps the depth charge..."
"It's only meant to latch on, even the hardest hit couldn't do anything." Padorin answered.

"What do you think captain? if they converge on our position they will know that we were faking it, and now that they have out position, they will noticed if we escape."
"damn it, and our EMPs would harm us at this range...but load an EMP into tube three and fill it, but don't think about launching. Just to be safe. When we get back to safe waters, i want to buy something that allows us to pull crap off the side of the hull."
"Orders though Captain?"
"Wait, listen for what they are doing, if it sounds like they are getting closer, then tell me, I hate to use the same trick twice, but scrabble them and shoot for the exit. EMP anything that gets in our way."

"Damn, do any tricks work on these people? Fire another BIG BANG and Run for it, straight for the exit. Are the EMPs ready?"
"Aye aye Captain."
"Good, GO!"
With that the akula rumbled to life and went full speed towards the way out of the Ridge system. Hoping that the enemy fleets were not in position yet, but if they were, a decent EMP blast should annoy their systems long enough to escape. Though what to do about the beacon stuck to the side.
"I hate to suggest this, but we will need to surface to destroy that damn detector thing attached to us."
Now the question was to do that before or after they made it out of here.

The sonar operator listened for a few more seconds before he determined...
"We are getting closer."
"Damn, flood tube one!"
"Flooded Captain!"
"Open tube and fire on that ship!"
"Firing sir!"
The sudden jerk of the ship rocked the crew slightly as the torpedo shot out of the submarine, no doubt this would get even more targets painted on its side, but already they were facing depth charges, what would a few more explosives be?
"Close tube one, reload one and four with a Starfish."
"Aye aye"
Hopefully the interference would confuse them enough not to see the torpedo until it was to late, but no doubt once they did they would know where the sub was heading.

The Akula rocked a little more as two Starfish anti-ship missiles flew out of the submarine and towards the Battlehawk fleet. However they would not stay around to see the effects.
"Turn us around we're taking another route out of here."
If this fleet is engaging then hopefully the other fleet backed off to make sure they would not get hit. Since it doesn't seem to be a group effort here. Hopefully this will play out right.

"Damn, fire tube four back at them, reload with a decoy and fire it as soon as you can!"
The next few minutes were hectic as the crew tried to find a way to dodge the incoming torpedoes, luckily there was not much thought put into the launch, seeing as the four were fired off as a last ditch effort into a scrambling mess of sound and dirt.
Two torpedoes missed thanks to the scrambler and missed entirely, the third hit the decoy once it was finally launched. However the third was coming straight for the sub.
