I don't really know, exactly. For one thing, how much is it appropriate to rip tech from established sci-fi franchises? That is, can I use, say, a 40k Space Marine, or have a ship that functions like those in Star Trek? Also, I could use some pointers for how much of a military my nation should be able to have, and so on.

You can indeed. Lots of nations use established science fiction as their basis, while others implement their own ideas and unique takes of FT. It doesn't really matter, but what I would suggest is if you do chose something like 40k or ST, don't mix and match, stick to something that you can do well without complicating it with other archetypes.

I think so. Does it seem reasonable to make a second nation, to RP techs from a different sci-fi? I've created some 40k-esque characters for a thread that died, and I'd kinda like to be able to use those in the future, but I'd also like to try tome Trek-based stuff.

Well, you could create a new one or just Rp your FT and MT as seperate entities. My FT is 40k Chaos, so I would be biased towards making you do 40k, but Trek isn't exactly the best for the warlike atmosphere of NS :P

Ever seen any of the Dominion War sequence from DS9? It got plenty warlike. In any case, I find I like some of the tech from 40k, in terms of power armor, bolters, and that sort of thing, as well as the more aggressive nature of it all. However, I really like Trek's take on ship to ship combat a lot more than the 40k stuff I've read.

Sorry Chronosia, but my first vessels were The Dominion's line of warships :D

The Federation vessels aren't even that bad, but if you're a nation that's going to be doing a lot of fighting, definitely go Klingon, Cardassian, or Dominion. Romulan's really good too but very expensive. 1 Warbird is about 8 USS Enterprise D's masswise (counting the really big gap)

EDIT: Also if you plan on using Trek weapons, I recommend disruptors and quantom torpedoes over phasers and photons. They take up the same amount of space and are arguably more destructive. I'll say it again because it bears repeating: Even if the Federation is your favorite side because you <3 Picard or whatever, their tech wasn't built for combat and therefore don't make great warships. Science and explorer vessels yes, and a Galaxy would be a big help if your Dominion battleship came under heavy fire. I just picked a side and stuck with their ships but Trek tech is similar enough that you can mix and match pretty well.

Yeah, my thought if I was gonna do Trek would be either Klingon or Romulan, most likely. If I was going to do anything Federation-esque, I would go with an alternate version, probably heavy on Defiant-class ships. In any case, it looks like I'm going to wait a while to really do anything with space combat, and work on ground forces for now.

Or there is always a more complex, but potentially more interesting option which is the one I have taken, although I do borrow a few elements from... Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri which has a good degree of Hard Sci-fi stuff, like what I was looking for, and for overall ship designs I take the following site as basis:

Unfortunately... this leads to two big issues: Neither stealth nor FTL(with a single exception which would be the equivalent of using fission power on an automobile) work in Solar Communes space... and their ships operate under Newtonian physics (http://scienceblogs.com/interactions/2007/07/newtons_laws_in_science_fictio.php) which means that if they are at 100 m/s at a direction, with a 10 m/s acceleration(~1g) they must accelerate for 10 seconds to change their direction instead of flying like WW2 airplanes dogfighting, being(according to Projectrho) more close to a "heavily loaded 18-wheeler truck moving at high speed on a huge sheet of black ice.". And no space fighters either (http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/rocket3x.html#fighters), although it makes no difference for plot devices because even a kilometer long carrier can be almost fully automated and have only have a single "heroic" human to take the role of strategist and tactician because AIs still cannot make strategies or tactics, or for roles which have little risk, fully automated. The good(and also bad) news is that regarding engagement range, it is usually of many hundreds to thousands of kilometers, when not measured in astronomical units, light minutes or light hours. The bad news is that intercepting missiles flying at thousands of kilometers per second is no piece of cake.

I guess you can sign me up for this. If you have a bit of a clue but don't know where to begin, I'd be happy to help. ;)

I'd be willing to be a trainer, been here for about over four years now, not counting five years or anything. I'm experienced in MT/PMT/FT and Past Tech, with Fantasy Tech a side-play for stories I write off the internet.

The FT technologies I am experienced in are:
-Star Wars
-Star Trek (TOS, TNG and beyond)
-Battlestar: Galactica (TOS)
-Halo (off-internet stories)
-Gundam (everything up to Gundam Zero and a few series beyond)
-Macross (TOS) and the American Robotech versions.

A few others I can't remember, but I hope that helps. If anyone needs help with any of these areas I'd be willing to give technical advice and whatnot, and I do do proof-reading if anyone needs it. I'm available at the following links:

I haven't registered yet, so ViZion you might want to. I figure since there are quite a few names I recognize in the OP that I'm almost positive use IRC, it'd be easy.

Since I was asking questions about IRC, I didn't get a chance to introduce myself. Nation is Fief Sygmir, present day with slightly outdated tech, meaning untapped resources. That's pretty much what I've got. Some RP history on other sites, but very little actual experience.

well, even though Ive been a part of these forums since before the jolt switch, I have been thinking about bringing Nascent into space, aka making it a planet somewhere in the void and making it FT. But honestly, I dont have the first clue about FT stuff, except for the star wars and warhammer 40k universes, but I dont want to just copy and paste things from them, so if anyone could help me out with building a planet then that would be freaking awesome!

Also any help in my roleplaying ability would be greatly appreciated. I friggen love intelligent critiques of my writing so if you ever see a post of mine, just shoot me a telegram or something along those lines if you have something intelligent to say about it.

Also #2 if there is anyone who could help me out, let me know in some sort of way so we can work out how best to communicate with each other.

Population increases daily - first week or so it goes up by 1 million/day, then it starts to have bigger increases. As for RPing, first off did you read the first post w/ some of the basics?

Alright, well, first things first, you did a good job in starting off with a 'festival' of sort to kick off your country's introduction into the international community. Many start off with trying to start a war, a very BAD thing to do when there's so many countries out there lovin' to beat up on n00bs (and newbies - yes, there's a difference, and you appear to be a newbie, which is to say new, but with great potential).

Try to stay away from wars until you build up a bit. Go to various 'store fronts' to buy initial military weaponry that you can afford. Note that, without help, you'll need to wait til roughly 100 million population before you can begin making headway in the nuclear field.

Join up in character RP's - where you RP as a single person, not as a nation. Doing this will keep things (comparatively) peaceful and allow you to see the various forms and levels of RP people use. It's a great way to begin improving your RPing abilities and skills. Probably the best, actually.

Also, make sure no matter where you post, when posting IC to use proper grammer and spelling - those 2 things are HUGE. Also, like I said, great start for your RPing, but also setup an embassy area so other nations can setup embassies (and you do the same, setup embassies in their countries) to begin networking and making alliances. When you do so, summits (char. RP's) will help improve your relations with them, and you may begin to setout on cooperative missions with them. Be them humanitarian (suggested to start off) or military (highly suggest building up and learning the game and RPing before doing this)

I've always RPd MT, and I do have a FT ViZion (not related to my MT nation), but don't RP with it much these days. Just the occasional post, maybe five or six max in the past 1-2 years actually. heh

As for Acigoo thread, we'll see. I've thought about it on and off, but with almost no Acigoo nations left, I'm extremely reluctant to revive Acigoo itself as I'd want some of the original Acigoo nations involved. Maybe we could come across a new material with its own unusual 'powers' though at some point in the future. A hell-bent revenge of the Acigoo's long-lost brother? heh
