"Damn it! We need to get to her house now. How far is it to our objective?" Special agent Giuliano barked as he stuck his head out the window.
"On the other side of the tunnel is Old Kylesburgh, that's where we're heading," Chadbourne said.

"Oh, this would probably take a quarter to half an hour," the man answered as the last car on the line backed off and headed east along Brister Avenue. "Take Promontory Road," he advised, "Kylesburgh Avenue is probably congested too."

"So we have alittle bit of time left to kill." He said as he set hos fork down on the side of his plate. "So tell me about yourself? Whats your story?"
"Me? I led a boring life," she chuckled. "What exactly do you want to know 'bout me?"

OOC: Not to sure how much I'll be on in the coming week. I'll drop in when I can.

OOC: What does Mr. McSlarrow know about the history of your country?
OOC. Standard stuff said in standard Kylesburgher history textbooks and taught in Kylesburgher public schools. Plus more.

"My ancestors arrived here with the Endurance, the first ship to come to Kylesburgh. They were one of the first settlers in Kylesburgh. So we've been pretty much around here for this country's history. I've got lots of cousins of varying degrees.

"I took up Criminology, but my father didn't want me to become a police officer. So what did was to apply for a job in the crime lab to appease my father and to use my Criminology degree. But, oh, technically, I'm part of the police force."

"Mr. McSlarrow, are you much of a reader?" James asked with a smirk as he eyed the wreckage. "You see, it is our belief that these attacks are being purpotrated by a group within your country. This group may feel that is has or is being oppressed, regardless of if it is being so or not. What can you offer on this matter? Certainly you are a student of your country's history? I do believe the library would be a good place to start. How about you sir?"

The National Library of Kylesburgh is a tall impressive glass-walled tower at the corner of two busy streets. Kylesburgh did not have a library then, until 1939, when the Kylesburgh Council appropriated funds for a library. At first, the library was an extension of the Kylesburgh Council building, but the Liberal FitzMaurice government made it a point to make an all-new library to accommodate the expanding collection and archives. The country's archives are also in the building.

McSlarrow drove into the building's underground parking area and parked the car on the second level. When he turned off the engine, he reached for his wallet and checked for his ID. "Alright, let's go, I'll be taking care of whatever you want to borrow."

OOC. Sorry for the long delay, RL was really really crappy. :( BTW, I changed regions, though it prolly won't be detrimental to the past RPs... and the neighbors are interesting...

Within thirty minutes they reached the ridge's peak, after trudging uphill the heavily wooded south slope. Chadbourne rushed up a small bare area on the ridge's backbone. The rocky outcropping in the ridge was the only unforested area of the ridge, offering a good vantage point from which to see Old Kylesburgh and Kylesburgh proper.

He gestured for his companions to follow. "That is Old Kylesburgh," he pointed at the small settlement on the northern coast of the island, surrounded by the farms and the airport. He paused to catch his breath, breathing in the fresh morning air. "Shall we take a break here?"

"I've heard allot about this Endurance. What is the story about that?" He said, while folding his hands.
"Ah Endurance," she muttered. "It was the ship that carried my ancestors and the present settlers of Kylesburgh. My dad researched a lot about it...

Endurance sailed from England on November 1876, carrying people searching for a better place. They specifically wanted a new land, where they can be free to make their own laws, and so on. They had different reasons and motives - my great-great-great-grandfather was a Catholic, and he was tired of the persecution.

They were led by Captain Patrick B. Poole, a disgraced Royal Navy captain. They searched for land in the Pacific, and then finally moving on a pirate-infested section of the West Pacific. They say that they encountered a pirate attack somewhere, but I'm not sure... They landed in Kylesburgh on April 4, 1877, near Old Kylesburgh. They found stuff in an abandoned island, there were no natives, unlike in Burol or Caragaiana. The Portuguese at Santa Maria were not claiming the island, nor the French in Liamone... Kylesburgh is the most isolated island in the Pacific Antilles - way too far of the main island chains.

Poole had a search party under James Thomas Sherbourne scout the island. They decided to settle in Kylesburgh proper... though some opted to remain in the northern part of the island. My ancestors opted to move with Poole.

Within a few days, stragglers from a French ship, L'Etoile du Foix, reached Kylesburgh's shores, and after a few more days, the Norweigan ship Stimmsdal was shipwrecked off Kylesburgh coast. More settlers came in.

Endurance was dispatched again back to England in the fall of 1877 to look for more settlers and funds. It was after the Irish potato famine, if I can remember it correctly. Then we had more and more settlers..."

"You see. We need some sort of link here. Terrorist groups that are predominantly internal often feel some sort of oppression or disillusionment with the ruling government. Most of the times these reasons are minor and wouldn't illicit so much as a stare in most societies but you never know. Because your country is new I don't necessarily see it being an external group unless your independence came at a price? Do you have any ideas where we should begin?"

"No, our independence did not come with a price. We found this island, and we settled on it, and we built this country up from scratch.

We are a peaceful country. I, myself have no idea." He then led them to the elevator and pressed the up button. "The only attack against the country or any of its leaders and inhabitants was in 1952, when President Timothy Daugaard was assassinated."

Erin MacKinnon began to cry. "Hush," Adrienne Balmer quieted her. "Just do what they say, okay?"

"Who are you?" LaManche demanded as he put himself between Amra and the women. Inside, he was starting to fear that these might be terrorists. He started to reach for his gun...

MacKechney saw all of this from the corner of his eye. He shoved to the back of his mind the thought process of retrieving the secretaries' names; all he thought of was the possibility of anything bad happening. Like LaManche, he was beginning to think that these guys might be the terrorists and that they were lying about their identities. He saw the security at the front door talking on the radio, calling for backup. He might not have time to call for one, he must act fast.

He took out his gun, pointed it at the Xeraphian nearest to the secretaries and rushed to the lobby. "Hey! Let them go!"

First Lady Rebecca Knutsen was going down the stairs with her six-year-old son Malcolm when they saw a gun and katana-wielding commando at the foot of the staircase. She quickly carried Malcolm and rushed up the stairs...

Amra glanced up and saw what looked to be a woman hastily running up the stairs with a second person. Tapping the commpin, he said, "Hiza, one, possibly two, UPs heading up towards second floor, back stairs."

"Right on it, Chief."

Amra turned back to the hallway where MacKechney and Lamanche were on the offensive. Guns were drawn, much shouting. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw two Squid, Jira and Elbe' emerge from the shadows. Lamanche seemed to be a lot more aggressive than MacKechney and therefore it was Lamanche who was on the receiving end of a 7-inch battle knife.

Rema was keeping an eye on the two women when Lamanche started shouting. He saw a gun in the man's hand and didn't hesitate. In one fluid motion, he pulled the knife from it's sheath and hurled it, end over end, at Lamanche. The knife was thrown with such force that it pinned the big man to the wall as it passed into the rear of his skull through his open mouth. Blood poured from the mouth of Lamanche as he plummeted into shock, dropping his gun onto the floor, blood pooling around his feet.

As the assault on Lamanche was occuring, Amra, Jira and Elbe' simultaneously drew on MacKechney. "Don't make me kill you, Lieutenant. Drop the gun."

It was farther west, near the airport. "There," he pointed to a section of the town halfway between the church and the edge of the town.

"Yes, we found the land in 1877. It was unoccupied, there are no native groups. We have no colonizers, the settlers formed their own government, and later formed a constitution, and the modern state of Kylesburgh is up and running by 1902."

The elevator opened into the ground level of the National Library, there they were greeted by a huge map of the Pacific Antilles and Kylesburgh. "Some islands in the region were uninhabited then. Saint Eustace in Liamone, and Negrilha in the North Antilles were uninhabited. Kylesburgh was one of them. In fact some are still uninhabited, like Nabôangin and Santa Cruz."

Rebecca Knutsen quickly reached the fourth floor of the building, turned left, and entered a door. They were in the Presidential Library. But despite them being in the fourth floor and with the heavy wooden door between them and the corridor, they still heard the shots outside.

"Mom, what's happening?" Malcolm asked. The boy looked calm, and his mother dismissed it as his innocence.

"We must hide," his mother said, locking the door and hiding behind the last row of bookshelves on the far end of the room, close to the window.

Amra turned back to the hallway where MacKechney and Lamanche were on the offensive. Guns were drawn, much shouting. MacKechney looked at then angrily. They had killed Tyler LaManche, and they would most likely kill the two other women and him. They had tricked him, he brought them here. He caused all of these...

He looked at the slumping body of the young health secretary, with a knife sticking out of his mouth and literally bathing in his own blood. He must get back, even if it would cost him...

He began to see red... "Die, you f*ckers!!!" He began to fire his gun......

It was over in just four or five seconds, but the smoky hallway still reverberated with the sound of automatic gunfire. The heavy smell of cordite hung in the air, the odor of blood and sweat mingling with it.

Amra stood over MacKechney, head bowed. The other Squids hadn't moved, being cautiously aware should any more citizens come barging in, guns blazing.

The two women were now hysterical. Urine stained their trousers, pooling at their feet. They were sobbing uncontrollably. Rema no longer found it necessary to keep his weapon trained on them.

"Amra. Amra! Snap out of it! We gotta make tracks!"

Amra wasn't out of it. He was coolly calculating their next move. The lieutenant was dead.....VERY dead. He doubted that he could be identified by either dental records OR fingerprints. There wasn't much left of MacKechney after the 20-30 exploding rounds hit him. The couple of shots he got off were lodged in the ceiling of the hallway. "Shut up, Rema. You know me better than that. We need to make tracks outta here. That fool....I told him we would defend ourselves against anyone we deemed necessary." He tapped the commpin. "Hiza. Any luck?"

The Squid moved up the stairwell at a rapid pace, making no sounds. She heard a door being closed a floor-and-a-half above her. "Amra, someone just locked themselves in a room or closet on the fourth floor. No other sounds. Instructions?"

"Yeah. Stay put for a minute. I'm sending Jira up. When she gets there, get to the unknowns. Don't kill 'em unless your'e fired upon. Try to bring 'em back alive. Got it?"

"Aye, sir. Dead or alive....preferably alive. Gotcha."

"The terrorists," Chief Pelletier said, "must be the terrorists." They then heard a continuous sound from the gun that tore apart Lieutenant Bryce MacKechney.

Pelletier stood up form his seat and grabbed the President's upper arm. "We must hide and keep you safe, Mr. President," he said as he brought out his gun and started to lead him to the conference room's bathroom.

"How about Rebecca? Malcolm?" The president looked gravely worried.

"We can only pray, Mr. President," Secretary Derrick Holtz said as he started cocking his gun. "I will be going out."

"Wouldn't it be better if we stay put?" Pelletier asked. "The terrorists will know where we are."

"But we must plan our escape," Kryszewski strongly suggested. "How are we going to escape if we don't look for one? Now, I will be going out. Derrick, you lock the door after I go out."

Kryszewski readied his gun and began to open the door. He slipped through the door without a noise, and with his back hugging the wall, he hid behind a pilaster five steps from the door. He peered at the hallway and the lobby. He saw a commando standing in front of a macerated body. There are three more commandos in the lobby, guarding Adrienne Balmer and Erin MacKinnon. He saw Tyler LaManche's body sprawled on the floor, his shirt soaked in blood, and a knife and a river of red form his mouth. The terrorists were indeed brutal...

"Amra.

That fool....I told him we would defend ourselves against anyone we deemed necessary."
"There are terrorists outside the building," Officer Clyde Heller reported to Captain Jonathan Bratt, the head of the Kylesburgh Police SWAT team. They had parked on Main Avenue and closed off all exits away from Kylesburgh Place.

"How many?" Bratt asked over the radio.

"I see two in front of the building," Heller replied. His companion, Officer Hunter Sibley, gestured to him when they saw the two Squids turn their eyes off the road.

The two stealthily crossed South Main Street into the Kylesburgh Place, hiding behind the bushes, their snipers ready, waiting for the opportune time...

Meanwhile, Bratt kept on getting bad news. "I see two at the Kylesburgh Road side," reported Officer Ian Loeffler from the team on the north side of the building.

"Councilor Descoteaux said the President and some of the Cabinet are still inside."

Bratt looked at Kylesburgh House. Perhaps if they enter the building from an unorthodox position...

His eyes then shifted to the steep, wooded slope on the building's south side...

He tapped the commpin. "Hiza.

Gotcha."
Rebecca Knutsen huddled with her son. She was totally scared and terrified...

Doc Merit let out a long breath. His heart was racing faster than it has since he was in the Royal Marines. "Well, if we are going to make it in time, we better get going." He said as he lifted himself from the rock, he leaned back to readjust his aching back. "Going down should be easier." He mumbled to himself.
"Alright, let's go," Chadbourne said as he stood up and led them down the slope.

It did not take a long time for someone to come out of the door. It was a woman, probably of college age. Her hair was disheveled, her expression was extremely sad, and eyes were red, looking like she had cried so much. "Who are you?"

Marvin sat back in his chair fortunately. "We need to get in there now." He paused to contemplate his thoughts for a moment. "Is there anyone else that is available?" He questioned.
"Two officers would be coming by shortly with the warrant," Elaine said as she gestured to the waitress for the bill. "But they're not from the SWAT team."

The waitress came back immediately with the bill....

'We've had an incident in the building miss, a murder.'

This was getting him nowhere whoever did the killing would be long gone by now and he sure as hell wasn't about to go door to door in the entire bloody building that was uniforms job.

'Im not interested in the body yet, I want a forensic team in his apartment, anyway unless you have another job for me, I'm going for some breakfast.'

Breakfast for Armitage meant a cup of coffee and a bacon sandwich at a local eatery he frequented, the place was out of the way and patronised by blue collar types and those that skirted on the edge of the law, it was down on the docks tucked away between warehouses and storage sheds, this early in the morning it was half full with dock workers and other types that felt more comfortable doing their business at night, the latter would be getting ready to leave, sleep beckoning. Armitage fitted in here, they knew he was a cop, they knew as long as no one got killed or too roughed up in a crime he'd turn the other way. They also knew he was straight the last idiot who thought otherwise was still walking with a limp. He took up his usual place at the counter and listened to the background noise around him, the general talk was of the attacks that had occured over the last couple of days. Armitage motioned to Sven the owner, Sven was a Norwegian expat, a merchant sailor who'd fell in love with the islands and decided to stay. He came over with a cup and a coffee pot, pouring as he spoke 'Is bad yes, many people dead?'
Armitage nodded. 'Getting worse, some one just offed Nygaard, threw him out of a window twenty floors up. Someones sending a message, any strangers passed through without going through the normal channels?'

He took a sip of his coffee and grimaced. 'Still tastes like piss'

Sven laughed 'Just how you like yah'

Amra double-tapped his commpin. "AirWolf-1, we have a situation here necessitating our rapid removal. Do you copy?"

Three seconds of static. "Yes, Commander. Requested extraction time?"

Amra checked his watch. "It'll take us 15 minutes to get to the roof of Kylesburgh House. Can do, AirWolf?"

"Aye, sir. Can do. Additional back-up, sir?"

"Capitol idea, AirWolf. We may have quite a few somewhat disgruntled police on our tail."

Amra tapped his commpin again. "Jira...Hiza. Anything yet?" "Yes, Amra. It appears we have the First Lady of Kylesburgh and her son here. Orders?"

He thought for a moment. "Bring 'em with you to the roof. We're being extracted. ETA AirWolf about 16 minutes."

"Gotcha sir. On our way."

Amra turned back to the rest of the Squid team in the hallway. "OK people. We're outta here in about 15 minutes. We need to get our asses to the roof. AirWolf will be backed-up by Comanche16. Hiza and Jira have the First Lady with them. Absolutely no harm is to come to either her or the boy. Rema, NNam, cover our backs. Gyoe, get word to the four Squid outside to get to the roof, STAT. "Probably," McSlarrow replied. "It was more than a century ago. And if there were indeed natives or people hiding in the island, there should have been contact. There are some mysteries, though. You know how we got the name Kylesburgh?"

OOC: Yes please.

"Probably? That is not reassuring Mr. McSlarrow. But please go on how did you achieve your name?"

"Thank you very much." Doc said as he followed Michelle through the gate and into the house. He looked around the quaint surroundings of the home. Standing with his collogues, he waited for Mrs. Driscoll.
Chadbourne's phone rang. He took it out and answered it. "Excuse me for a second," he said, going out the door.

A few moments later, a woman came down the stairs with Michelle. She wore a black dress, with her eyes swollen almost shut from crying. She held a handkerchief, wet with tears. She walked slowly towards them. "I am Lily Driscoll."

Agent Maël ran out of the station in a bustle. As he ambled towards the police car he donned his coat. The door to the vehicle opened at the same moment the Agent flew into the awaiting car. "Sorry I'm late, let’s go." He admitted, as Maël buckled up.

"When the people from Endurance arrived, they saw a seaside grave labeled "Kyle", and a burned settlement. They assumed that whoever that Kyle was, he was part of the settlement, and so they named it Kylesburgh.

A few decades, back, they exhumed the grave and found not one person, but a family..."

OOC: NSWiki is down, and so I am posting parts of Kylesburgh's articles from NSWIKI. Good thing I had them on backup. :)

Short History of Kylesburgh
English settlers came to the island aboard the ship Endurance on April 4, 1877. The 30 settlers, headed by Patrick B. Poole, were searching for a new land. Upon arriving at the island, they found a small deserted settlement and a seaside grave with a cross labeled “Kyle”; and so the settlement was called Kylesburgh.

Subsequent waves of settlers came in, mostly from England. By 1898, the rebuilt Kylesburgh boasted 1,412 inhabitants, with booming industries and attracting more settlers, some from France, Scotland, Scandinavia, Germany, Spain, and Poland.

In 1902, the inhabitants decided to gather and establish a government for the fledgling community. They created a constitution for the “Free State of Kylesburgh” and codified laws. The small country welcomed settlers and refugees and helped them have a new start.

The settlement grew, and through the decades it became one of the most modern, rich, and industrialized small nation. Most of the improvements came in the period between 1950-1980, when the economy boomed and the state modernized.

Today, Kylesburgh is a thriving island community, proud of its roots and traditions. Immigration may not be as big as it was before, but there are still traces of the different cultures that had an impact on it.

Origin and Mysteries of Kylesburgh
Name
History
When the ship Endurance arrived at the island’s northern shore on April 4, 1877. the settlers found a small deserted settlement in present-day Old Kylesburgh. The settlement, composed of huts made from material found on the island, was abandoned at burned to the ground. Three hundred meters from the settlement, a search party led by James Thomas Sherbourne discovered a seaside grave. A cross with the name “Kyle” engraved was planted in the sand. Sherbourne and the Endurance settlers assumed that that was a grave.

The settlers decided that the north side of the island might be too dangerous, and soon moved into the interior, where they found a much larger plain and area to settle in (now Kylesburgh proper). According to the diary of Georgette Sherbourne, “… they thought it was fitting to name the settlement Kylesburgh for that person on the grave and for the destroyed settlement. So I asked them, what if that Kyle was an evil person? And I got the answer that, we don’t know that, and that they cannot think of any other name.”[1]

It was decided that the name of the new settlement would be Kylesburgh.

The Grave
The precise history of Kylesburgh prior to the arrival of Endurance cannot be known. There were no known natives on the island when they arrived, and historians surmise that the old Kylesburgh was an abandoned settlement. Many hypotheses had been put forward, and none were still accepted. For once, questions linger such as:

Why didn’t the early settlers leave a trace apart from their burned settlement?
Why was the settlement abandoned?
Who is Kyle and who buried him?

To answer many of these questions, in 1966, the Kylesburgh Council, at the recommendation of Education and Culture Secretary Leigh Zoellig, authorized a continuing multidisciplinary study of the history of Kylesburgh and established a study group for this reason[2]. However, on March 1967, a group of vandals destroyed the well-preserved seaside grave of Kyle. Consequently, the study team, headed by Professor Cade Burnley of the University of Kylesburgh, decided that an exhumation of the grave was necessary.

Upon exhumation, it was found out that the grave did not just contain one person, but six people, probably a family. Recent DNA evidence showed that the skeletons in the grave, save for one, were indeed from one family. Researchers identified the skeletons as those belonging to a male in his late thirties; a pregnant female in her early thirties; a female in her teens; a prepubertal female; and a male toddler. The unrelated skeleton was that of a male in his early twenties. [3]

The study group also noted that the family wore traditional late eighteenth-century to early nineteenth-century clothes; the unrelated male wore a sailor’s attire.[4] Carbon dating placed the skeletons at about 200 years old.[5]

Forensic anthropologist Dr. Faith Reichenbacher of the University of Kylesburgh analyzed the skeletons in 1990 and ruled that the family died of stab wounds, probably with a sword or a bayonet; Dr. Reichenbacher also noted a musket shot on the skull of the unrelated male.[6]

Diggings
During construction structures in Kylesburgh, many artifacts such as bayonets, muskets, vases, cockery turn up, especially along North Kylesburgh and the stretch of coastline between present-day Promontory Hill and Little Bay Beach. Many have been dated to coming from different eras, cloudying more the mystery of Kylesburgh’s past.

Two of the most spectacular findings include the finding of a small deposit of golden Spanish coins dated to the late 1500s during the construction of the present-day Goshen Tower (3744 Holstein and Burlbaugh Avenues) in 1988. [7] A small tavern used to stand in the area, but the necessity of digging deeper for the foundations of a taller structure helped in finding the deposit. The discovery led many Kylesburghers to dig in their backyards for artifacts and possible wealth. One gruesome discovery was that of another grave, this time of the skeleton of three men in their twenties, in the woods behind Letcher Inn (1478 Carpathian Avenue). The deaths were ruled as traumatic head injury due to the presence of severe skull fractures.[8]

As a result of the possibility that such discoveries may had went unreported, the Kylesburgh Council passed the Archaeological Explorations Law of 1988, which prohibits digging a hole deeper than six feet in Kylesburgh soil. Doing so requires a permit form the Department of Public Works and needs to be overseen by an archaeologist.[9]

More research is being done on the mystery of the grave and Old Kylesburgh, and more theories and hypotheses are coming out. None, however, has been proven and accepted.

Coat of Arms
Sherbourne also discovered a golden pendant hanging over the cross over the grave of Kyle. The pendant was that of a double-headed eagle. It was known (until the discovery of other artifacts) as the only link to Kylesburgh’s past. It was Sherbourne himself who proposed putting or making the double-headed eagle of Kyle’s Cross (as it was called) as the coat-of-arms of Kylesburgh.

'If the chief puts me on your team, then maybe I'll be there, but at the minute I'm working the Nygaard murder.' Armitage sounded slightly pissed at Chadbournes tone. 'Armitage out!' He broke the connection. 'Prissy son of a bitch.' He growled.

Armitage awaited Dr Kent to find out the preliminary findings of Nygaards autopsy.
Boehner returned with Dr. Kent. Dr. Kent had worked as the first and until now, the only, forensic pathologist in Kylesburgh. Dr. Kent was sixty-five, tall but slightly hunched, with dark-rimmed glasses, and exuded an aura of wisdom and experience. There was sadness permanently etched on his face from seeing too many deaths, but even Dr. Kent's decades of seeing Kylesburgh's dead was no match for the events, the slaughter, that had transpired last night.

"You are Armitage?" He looked at him. "Adam Nygaard was a priority case, I was told. So we put all those cyanide victims on hold... we aren't likely to be finding anything in them but cyanide in the blood."

"Okay, you said you want to learn about this young man's death," Dr. Kent uncovered the lower half of Nygaard's naked body. "Adam Follestad Nygaard, age 29, the late Kylesburgher Secretary of Justice." Dr. Kent looked at Nygaard's shattered face.

“Physical examination showed severe fractures on the frontal, left maxillary, left zygomatic, left temporal, and the jaw bone. There is massive internal hemorrhage within the calvarium with concussions of the left frontal and left parietal lobes."

“Also, the third to sixth cervical vertebrae are fractured, along with six ribs, and the left pelvis. These are all consistent to a fall... one in which he fell head first, and then on to his left side.” Dr. Kent showed him pictures at the crime scene where Nygaard was found face down, lying slightly on the left side. "So he wasn't moved. He was found as is."

"There are ligature marks on both the wrists and ankles consistent with the tying... Of course, he was spotted there blindfolded and tied."

"There are odd-shaped concussions at the chest, upper arm, left thigh, and at the back,” Dr. Kent lifted the body from the left and showed him the concussion. He pressed on the lividity of the back of the slightly rigid body. The area demonstrably blanched when he lifted his finger. "Livor is not fixed, rigor mortis has started set in, core body temperature at arrival here is 95.8ºF... estimated time of death - probably around 2 AM."

"Tox showed significant concentrations of inorganic fluoride and hexafluoroisopropanol - metabolic byproducts of sevoflurane."

"An inhaled anesthetic?" Boehner ventured.

"Correct," Dr. Kent continued, "blood, urine, and bile negative for alcohol, negative for every drug that we test. Except what I said earlier. We also took hair samples," he pointed at Nygaard's short cropped blond hair, "but I don't think we are going to find anything on it. We can go back to probably about two weeks or so with that."

"We had not found any other relevant evidence on the body, unless you count in the blindfold, the duct tape in his mouth, and the rope used to tie him up."

“And, you ain’t seen the finale yet. Mr. Nygaard’s mouth was duct-taped, but there was something in his throat.” Dr. Kent then retrieved a transparent Ziploc bag with a piece of paper inside. "Here it is," he said, showing it to Armitage.

Kylesburgh Hill, Kylesburgh Cliff National Park
07:20 AM, July 17, 2008

Thomas Sherbourne, a blond blue eyed man in his early twenties, stepped out of his car and looked around. It was still too early in the morning for him. He stretched a little bit before beginning his task. Thomas was still trying to get use to his shifts in the police force. He had just graduated from the police academy, so he was a rookie. Guess what kind of jobs the rookies got? The kind that were at the bottom of the barrel. Mostly lower level tier stuff. Stuff that usually people didn't want to take care of, but left it to the rookies.

Thomas scanned the area, then rubbed his eyes. He was responding to some suspicious activity in the area. One of the senior cops told him that the park got it all the time. Most of the time it was just rowdy teenagers trespassing into the park and causing mischief. Though Thomas did wonder what kind of teenager would be out right now, with the cyanide poisoning and tunnel. Most parents were afraid to let their children even go outside to go to school. It was pathetic.

Continuing along the trail, he made sure that he was alert. Off in the distance he could see the Kylesburgh Council building. Thomas was getting close to where the suspicious activity was reported. As he made a sharp turn, avoiding Kylesburgh Avenue, Thomas could see a car off in the distance. That was definitely suspicious. Getting closer to the vehicle, he could tell that he wasn't a vehicle that someone would leave in the middle of the forest.

Once reaching the car he saw that it was empty, but the car keys were still in the ignition. Walking the area around the car he could see multiple footprints, and some indications of someone being dragged. Had someone been murdered around here? Thomas quickly retrieved SIG P220 and became more cautious. His hands cupped the car door, then pulled it out. The door opened. Thomas head looked around in the car. Nothing. His hands grabbed the car keys. It was time to check the trunk.

Thomas intently looked at the trunk. He was afraid that bodies might be in it. One of his fingers was on the trunk open button on the car keys. Closing his eyes, he pushed the button and pointed his handgun straight into the truck. Slowly he opened his eyes and was surprised of what he had found. The gun slowly was lowered, then went back into its holster.

Thomas had found a man and woman bound and gagged. Though the odd thing was that the woman looked familiar. He quickly checked their pulses and was relieved to find out that they were both alive. Someone must have knocked them out, and then put them in the trunk. Thomas took the both people out the trunk and set them at the foot of the car. Carefully he took of the tape, across their mouths, and untied them. Then it hit Thomas like truck. He remembered where he had seen this woman before. She was Councilor Sabrina Szczepanski.

Getting on his knee, he patted Sabrina's cheek. She was certainly more beautiful in person, than the times Thomas had seen her on TV or some newspaper article.

"Councilor, wake up." Thomas asked with a concerned look.

Janina Alcântara's car was wheezing past Kylesburgh Pass towards the incident at Kylesburgh House. She likes it when she gets scoops, not doubt about it, but this time around, her colleague outscooped her. Macario "Mac" Magalonão had been there first. It doesn't matter for their boss at Antilhas TV, one of the leading private TV stations in the North Antilles and in the region. Janina and Mac are from the same station anyway, but the fact is, she hadn't been the first on scene.

As they headed northbound along the empty road, Janina noticed a car parked on the woods to her left. Two bodies, a man and a woman, lay on the side of the car, and a police officer bent down, trying to wake up the woman.

"Lourenço!" She said in Portuguese at her driver and cameraman Lourenço "Lou" Sacadura, "Stop the car! Get your camera ready, there is something in the woods!"

Lou hit hard on the brakes. "Where?" He asked, but started parking the car on the shoulder.

"To your left."

Lou put the car on full stop, turned off the engine, grabbed his camera, and went out of the car, struggling to keep pace with Janina, who had already bolted out and ran to the other side of the road.

Janina donned her "PRESS" ID and approached the officer. "Good morning, officer, I'm Janina Alcântara from Antilhas News," she said in her Portuguese-accented English. "What happened here?"

"Shannon, dear, the Kylesburgh Police came here with a warrant."

Armitage nodded. 'Guess I'll wait then, you gonna make me wait in my car or allow me into your security office?' He flashed his warrant card just to show he was a police officer. 'I promise I won't touch anything.' He said with a grin.
"Sure, come in," the guard said as he led Armitage into a small room near the ticket booth. "This is our place. I'm sure Ivan will come in anytime soon, actually he's late... again."

Armitage took a seat. 'Ivan's day shift?' He asked looking over the small area. 'Say maybe you can help me with something' Armitage reached into his pocket and brought out the museum flyer. 'That number, any ideas on what it could represent, a museum exhibit number or some sort of archeological find cataloguing number maybe?'

Six months ago," he said as he tossed the ticket back at Armitage. "And Ivan's shift is six-'till-two, and he's more than an hour late." He then started to leave the room.

"When the people from Endurance arrived, they saw a seaside grave labeled "Kyle", and a burned settlement. They assumed that whoever that Kyle was, he was part of the settlement, and so they named it Kylesburgh.

"Alright, let's bring this to a table," McSlarrow said, gesturing towards an isolated cubicle to their left.

They sat down on the chairs around the table. McSlarrow put down a copy of the death certificate. "Timothy Magnus M. Daugaard, age 30... died of inracranial hemorrhage due to cerebral lacerations and skull fractures due to two perforating gunshots of the head. Death certified by Dr. Etienne LaManche, M.D." He went to the stapled autopsy report. "... two entry wounds of the head... one in the left suboccipital region, which penetrated 1 cm posterolateral from the foramen magnum... another entry wound at the left temporal region at the pterion. Bullets found lodged in the brain...

Opinion: Approximate time of death: between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM on May 16, 1952... Manner of Death: Homicide..."

They pored over the files. McSlarrow went over another report. "... the assassin was identified as Flávio Ribeira, age 19, an immigrant from the North Antilles. North Antillean records showed no criminal records on Ribeira in the North Antilles."

"The official report says that Ribeira acted on his own. Why, they don't know. That's the result of the official investigation. But some conspiracy theorists theorized that he was angry at the Conservative government of Kylesburgh for passing a law in December 1951 that would deport illegal immigrants out of the country."

"I have no idea," Shannon Burns said. "Tell me."

OOC. Or, Shannon Burns is single. ;) Ms. Burns would be more appropriate, as Mrs. Burns would be her mother, who will come by later... :D

He walked back around the table. Stooping so he was ear level with the girl, he whispered in her ear. "I trust you have been listening to the news lately? You don't by chance know of the people who have carried out these attacks? Have you?"

"What, the cyanide release at the Kylesburgh Underground? No, I don't know anything about it except what I see on TV," she then paused, still puzzled but with indignation creeping into her expression, "I think you are mistaken. When my lawyer arrives, I will ask her to file a case of unlawful arrest."

"Ah, conspiracy theories," McSlarrow said derisively. He knew that there were lots of conspiracy theories surrounding the Daugaard assassination. "Of course, there was a conspiracy theory implicating the Liberals of staging the assassination. These theorists also say that they may had also had a hand in Hendrickson's death." He wrote on a request form and gave it to a librarian. The librarian came back with official documents and three books. OOC: Sorry it's been so long. I've sort of run out of ideas here so if you want to give me a nudge that would be good since I don't know what direction to head in anymore. You're a good RP'er and for someone who isn't native 'English' I wouldn't have known.

"Interesting. I take it no such laws of similar nature have been passed in the past eighteen months? You see, terrorist organizations often strike and within eighteen months they're defunct. Due largely to infighting, they usually tear themselves apart and splinter into different groups, many more 'severe' than the original." He put down the papers and the records and rubbed his face as exhaustion took over. "I'm afraid I'm lost here. Nothing seems to give any indication of history playing a role unless we are missing something. Are we missing something?"

"Nope, haven't heard of any such law, or a terrorist organization," McSlarrow said. "Nowadays, we have the Pacific Antilles Regional Organization, which is a very active regional organization. Kylesburgh is afraid to irk its neighbors, especially the North Antilles, the most militarily advanced nation in the region. Just last month, I believe, the trade ministers held a meeting here in Kylesburgh, discussing the problem of piracy still plaguing the area's seas. Of course, the other kinds of piracy were discussed there too." McSlarrow noticed he was digressing. "Kylesburgh still retains the 1951 law, but legal immigration is much more easier now. We have a vibrant North Antillean community here, you know."

"Our history is full of mysteries," McSlarrow said, as if he had just made the realization. He made a mental note to add the Daugaard assassination to his mind's list of Kylesburgh's mysteries. "Heck, that is even if we have a story, it's just full of holes." McSlarrow's stomach complained. "Anyone care for breakfast?"

History of the Region

The native people in the Pacific Antilles are related closely to the present natives in the Queendom of Burol. It is reasonable to say that all of the fifty major islands in the archipelago were inhabited by natives, but about half were curiously uninhabited when the Europeans came. Archaeological explorations show evidence of prehistoric human activities on the islands.

The area’s first contact with Europeans began when Portuguese explorer João Batista Rondon de Bragança arrived in the island of Endemoninhado (presently in the state of Fornalha, the North Antilles) on 1480. Endemoninhado was uninhabited at the time, as it is today, and Rondon sailed to the next island to the south, Caragâiana. There, he traded with the natives for some supplies, but the lure of the lore of gold and silver made him decide to sail further south. At Santo Ângelo, the natives were more welcoming, and agreed to convert to Christianity. Rondon decided to establish a trading post there.

Rondon returned to Portugal, and more explorers came in, necessitated by the need to protect Portugal’s outpost from the pirates roaming the area. Even the natives were battling the pirates, but the pirates were successful in driving out natives from the island of Skyles (in Brister). Many communities were relocated inland, away from the coast, to avoid the raids by pirates.

The Spaniards came next, in 1515, arriving at Isla de los Diablos (in Islas del Pecados), another uninhabited island. Natives’ lore from the nearby island of Nataasnaluba (in Burol) said that Isla de los Diablos and its southern neighbour, El Infierno, were inhabited by malevolent forces. The Spanish explorer Santiago Saavedra y Martell opted to move south, claiming the southern islands for Spain.

With Spain staking out its claim, Portugal decided to claim the northern part of the archipelago in 1519. However, the natives at the islands of Saint Jean (in Liamone) to Nataasnaluba did not accept Portuguese sovereignty, and they remained as independent island states.

Piracy continued to plague the archipelago, forcing the Portuguese to abandon their original settlement and capital of Santo Ângelo to a more defensible fortress at Santa Maria at Ilha Grande in 1576. Many natives also followed the Portuguese, benefiting from the protection from pirates and slave traders. As contacts between the islands and the Portuguese increased, more fortresses and settlements were built along the island chain. The Spaniards also suffered similar attacks, and was forced to abandon its four more southern islands for a time.

Other settlers and explorers came to the islands. In 1664, a group of Dutch ships sought refuge at the re-established port and fortress of Santo Ângelo. In 1736, a large group of English-speaking settlers were found in the island of Os Nortes (in the state of Norte, the North Antilles). Invoking the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of 1373 and the 1378 Treaty of Windsor, the settlers sought to avail Portuguese protection against the pirates and slave traders. They were allowed to colonize the island of Os Nortes and remained under Portuguese protection. In 1762, the French under Count Michel Thibaux de Clermont arrived at the island of Corse (in Liamone), establishing France’s permanent outpost in the archipelago after overpowering its native population. The neighboring islands of Saint Jean, Sardaigne, and Saint Dominique surrendered to French suzerainty.

During the Napoleonic wars, the French-held islands, plus the island of Saint Gaspard, were occupied by the Portuguese. Meanwhile, Britain seized Spain’s islands. At the Congress of Vienna, Britain returned Spain’s possessions except the four southernmost islands, namely: Hebride, Shetland, Brister, and Skyles. Portugal did not lay claim of France’s islands, as it is already protecting 18 islands and started recolonizing the others.

The native-majority islands of Caragâiana, Pouronilad and São Pedro revolted against Portuguese rule in 1816, establishing a Kingdom with the other four islands remaining under sole possession of the natives, Dalambasan, Burol, Ramas, and Nataasnaluba. Later in 1862, this Kingdom collapsed, and Dalambasan, Burol, Ramas, and Nataasnaluba, along with Sindakan, formed the Kingdom (later Queendom) of Burol.

Following troubles and a cholera outbreak at home, Portugal granted independence to the North Antilles in 1846. The North Antilles nearly descended into a civil war in 1878, after internal disputes about the form of government. The more outlying islands preferred a looser federation, while others wanted a more centralized republic. After the provinces of Norte (the wealthiest province) and São Miguel (rich in natural resources) threatened to secede, a federal state was agreed upon.

Every European power remaining was holding their islands precariously, due to its remoteness, and due to the frequent attacks they sustain. Nevertheless, the French were able to settle the islands in large numbers. A group of English settlers even settled the uninhabited island of Kylesburgh in 1877, establishing a new country of their own, the third independent state in the area after Burol and the North Antilles.

Caragâiana, Pouronilad and São Pedro were forced to seek North Antillean help in 1890 after disastrous and devastating raids on its coasts. The three islands were admitted to the North Antillean federation as the state of Caragâiana in 1895.

Britain sold its two southernmost islands of Brister and Skyles to the ducal family of Brister in 1895, who promptly settled the uninhabited islands. They attracted settlers from Britain and Ireland and were able to fend off pirate raids in 1896 and 1902. Following the Spanish-American war, Islas del Pecados declared independence from Spain. France granted limited autonomy to Liamone in 1923, but the burdens the colony placed on it led France to grant independence in 1932. Following the 1931 Statute of Westminster, the colony of Hebride and Shetland became a Commonwealth realm in 1945.

War erupted in 1933, when Liamone occupied the uninhabited but resource-rich island of Saint Mark (São Marco/Saint-Marc), claimed by the North Antilles to fall under its sovereignty. After a brief campaign, Liamone surrendered and forced to give up its claims on the uninhabited island.

In 1978 the North Antilles, along with Kylesburgh and Liamone, formed the Pacific Antilles Regional Organization. Burol, Brister, Hebride, and Islas del Pecados joined soon.
