Caladonn
26-05-2005, 20:12
The Caladonnian army of 90,000 advanced to the Ukrainian border and dug in. A secret diplomat was sent to the Bulgarian Knights, offering them 10 gold pieces each if they would fight for the Caladonnians. Meanwhile, the official diplomats to Deatharon proposed a new treaty- Caladonn would colomise all lands up to Kiev running down to the Black Sea, and that would be the permanent border betweent the respective empires.
To support the army, a mighty Caladonnian fleet of 50 ships began an epic journey from Caladonn, around the straights of Gibraltar and through the Bosphorous, to the Black Sea where they would begin amphibious operations against Deatharon on the coast.

A revolutionary change had taken place in the Caladonnian Senate, the current Archmage, Celsior III, was voted out of office, and replaced with Aramil VI, he was against a war for imperialism and knew the Caladonnians had had enough of this war. However, although his interests for trade and friendship were great, he also did not want to leave the borders unprotected, so another 25,000 men were sent to the front, and fortified the Deatharon border with stone forts. The fleet sailed into the black sea and established many bases on the coast, lending another 15,000 marines to the entrenchment. Archmage Aramil himself went to the front, and requested a meeting with the Deatharon ruler, expressing sorrow of the many lives lost on both sides during the long war. He hoped this symbolic and practical gesture of goodwill would lessen the gap between the two countries and begin a reconstruction process.

If you are faced with a large threat, we will move in and help. But you will be in control of your borders and will need to make sure that no barbarian armies or anything get throught into Taledonia. There will be free trade of course; and you will be able to expand as you will as long as it does not interfere with the Empires plans. If no one objects, I'd like to sign up to this thread - I'll take greenland... yeah, I know it's not exactly europe but neither is northern africa, the middle east or "atlantis" so I'm hoping you'll be a bit lenient considering the entire europian landmass has been claimed or conquered. :p
I'll also assume the ice sheet is not as far to the coast as per norse legends and all that.
Kingdom Name: Dracoriava
Capital Name: Dracos amon
Capital Location/Background: Southern most peninsula, on one of the coastal isle of the great southern fjord (near modern day Qaqortoq - say that ten times fast). The capitial is a fair sized settlement of 25,000 consisting of a mix of wooden and stone architecture. The cities main defence is the natural icy waters flowing around the fjord island and the large stone perimeter wall surrounding it. There are two vast stone bridges that cross over to the island, one to the east and one to the north. This joins the city with the main trade lane known locally as 'the Great Dracos Highway' that crosses much land to join up most major settlements along both the east and west coasts. It is paved in the southern region and some parts of the western coast, otherwise it is of various qualities of bare earth.
Kingdom background: The region of Dracoriava was first settled by norse/europian narwhal merchants some five hundred years ago. For many years they lived in the cool region braving the icy sea waters to harvest the pseudo 'unicorn horns' which were often sold to gullable nobles and monarchs on the europian mainland for lucrative prices. For the next two hundred years, settlers immigrated peacefully to this isolated region and soon a number of local industries in fishing, whaling and farming developed into profitable trade venues.
Around three hundred years ago a large ragtag fleet of 125 wooden ships of various sizes landed in the main eastern port of Dracos Luminous. Full of weary refugees and battlescarred warriors the groups nominated leaders sought asylum, telling a tale of two seperate factions both driven from their homelands by war, famine and oppression. Fate brought the two groups together in the form of a massive ocean tempest that sweep both fleets into the northern atlantic and towards the east coast of Dracoriava. A deal was made with self-styled merchant monarch of Dracoriava and in exchange for the battered flotilla of vessels permanent asylum was granted. This marked an important turning point in Dracoriavan culture as the new immigrants incorporated themselves into the isolated society.
Over the next two hundred years, the kingdom grew in relative peace with those wishing battle joining either one of the small warbands that raided europe at random or signed on for one of the numerous whaling parties. By now the Celts and the Norseman made up the two main cultural groups in Dracoriava. The union of cultures was generally a peaceful one until this time when a norse hunter was accused of stealing an important celtic relic. The small incident should of remained as such however, ambitious would-be leaders took advantage of the sensitive situation and used it to fuel division between the celts and the norseman. After a few years of mounting tensions the between the two factions hostilities finally broke out and resulted in an ongoing civil war that lasted for over fifty years. By this time neither side gained had much of an upper hand and hence had grown tired of the fighting. The civil war ceased when both of the aging faction leaders had died not long after the original relic was found within the stomach of an ancient polar bear by a young hunter. The discovery lead to doubt over the original claims of the faction leaders and their inevitable downfall.
This year the kingdom of Dracoriava is celebrating the 40th anniversary of it's reunification. The last forty years have been prosperous as demand for whale oil and seal fur grows along with the average price of the much prized Narwhal horns. However, properity has a price and there have been recent concerns about the kingdoms population on the regions dwindling resources. Many now turn to the newly ordained King of Dracoriava, Redland III, whom in turn looks towards the horizon and the setting sun, and the old world that lies beyond......

The young emperor had accomplished much in his few years rule and was now know as Alexander Victor, the first Emperor to ever bear a different name than simple Emperor Kellerman. With most of the western medditereanian under the control of the Empire, the easter medditereanian at peace with Taledon, and Gaul now answering to Taledon, Alexander now set his sights on Germany; a province that even in the old Empire was unstabble and difficult to tame. But he saw it as his destiny to conquer Germany, and he was not easily turned from what he thought was his destiny. Immeadiatly, he began building up his forces, recalling many legions from other territories that didn't really need them; started stockpiling vast amounts of resources; and sent emmisaries to Gaul to demand that an army of Kaduna be assembled to act as auxilia to the Taledonian legions.
After careful placement, the Emperors forces, with the exception of the Kaduna auxilia, was in place. There were 9 legions positioned along the Rhine river in Gaul, awaiting the Kaduna auxilia before crossing; 12 legions positioned around the Danube and southern border of Germany; and the 15 legions that the Emperor would personally command positioned by the Alps which would cut a diagonal throught Germany seperating their forces. This made a total of 36 full legions. It would prove to be one hell of an invasion.

Meanwhile, an army of 50,000 was marshalled on the Germanic Coast, to begin a push inland in conjunction with both the Taledonians and another 50,000 troops in western Poland.

The Czar agreed but replied that the Taledonians seemed more of threat than anyone else at this point.
The Western Army sends hundreds of men towards the borders of Taledonia. The Massive stone castiles were almost construted in that area with the Wooden ones already complete. The Military in Turkey goes from 10,000 men to 60,000 men.
The 50 Warships keeped going to Greece not running to any problems yet.

Of the coast of Greece
The fleet sped through the rough waters. A storm was coming, not large enough to cause any damage, but large enough to ensure that everyone and everything got wet. They would arrive at the enemy fleet in a matter of minutes.
Rhine River
It appeared that barbarian tribes had taken control of the country once again. It appeared no one could stand up to those unwashed barbarians, but this time, it would be different. The still standing forts that had previously been set up by the Laskonians were full of barbarian warriors and would have to be dealt with before continuing inland.
Scouts had reported a total of 18 fortresses and camps along the Rhine, so the 9 legions were split up and each took one of them, but only taking the ones in the middle. The plan was to open a gap to seperate the barbarians and allow imperial forces to move into the country and meet up with the other forces of the Empire.
Danube River
The scouts for the legions on the Danube had reported a similar number of forts and camps, which would have to be dealt with. However, there was a large number of legions along the Danube, and they were ordered to attack the ones on the far side of the river, for the Emperors force would deal with the ones closest to the Alps.
Taledonian-Deatharon Border
With the mobalization of Deatharon troops on the border, the Empire responded. Tho the Deatharon force was only in the hundreds, 2 full legions, making a total of 12,000 men were sent to the border to aid the various forts that were along the border. Therefore on the border there would be 6 whole legions to defend against a possible threat from the Deatharon Empire.

*King Redland III sat on his throne in the great hall of Dracos Amon frowning down at the men below as each took his turn to report to their king. He was not in a good mood. News of latest attempts to sail west towards the rumoured sightings of land had come back heralding disasterous failure, with the last ship of the ten vessel strong expedition telling a woeful yet familiar tale of the dreaded head of Jorgamund rising up from the ocean depths to consume and destroy each ship one by one. Naturally Redland III was displeased. He now faced a major dilema, continue his fathers dream to establish the beginnings of a great new Dracos Midgard in the rumoured eden to the west beyond the mighty Jorgamund or return to the old lands of the east. If the vastly overpopulated kingdom of Dracoriava was to survive for another ten years more land and resources would be needed. Redland III knew this and though his peoples hopes centred on the mythical new Dracos Midgard, it seemed Jorgamund would force them towards an unwanted second option...*
"This is my decree. Gather ten more trade ships and seek out ten of our strongest warriors, ten of our finest scholars, ten of our fairest merchants, ten of our hardiest landowners and ten of our most devoted holy men. They are to make up this kingdom's first delegation of diplomats to be sent beyond our icy shore and return to the old world."
*The other men in the great hall were shocked. No power in europe knew of the existance of Dracoriava, only traders and raiders made the long sea voyage over the great eastern ocean to ply their trade. Many nobles could trace their bloodlines back to the arrival of exiles many centuries ago and feared what teh outcome would be if the old world knew of the existance of a fully fledged kingdom and not just a bunch of mongrel barbarian tribes.*
"But my lord! It is written in the founding stone that contact with the old lands is forbidden! We cannot-"
*Redland III rises from his throne in anger.*
"I know what is written in the stone!! Do not assume that I make this decree out of ignorance!"
"B-b-but my lord-"
"Silence!"
*Redland III's voice echoes it's fury throughout the great hall. He waits for a few minutes before seating himself back in his throne.*
"The decree stands! We must make contact with the old world and learn it's ways properly! The kingdom is on the brink here gentleman, we must expand now, not later, if we are to survive the coming winters and the west as proven inaccessable. Do I make myself clear?"
*The men all bow.*
"Yes my lord. Your decree shall be acted upon."
-------------------------------------------------
Four months later...
*The new delegation sailed out of the city Dracos Luminous with the finest and fastest trading vessels in the kingdom. There goal was a simple one - sail east across the great ocean and make contact with the first foreign power that they run into...*

OOC: Then Taledonia, I'll rp as the barbarians for now. And New Drakora, I'll assume you are sighted off the coast of Norway.
IC: Escathon, Norway
A man atop a lighthouse, looking out into the distance, saw ten ships appear on the horizon. They were of an unkown type that had not been previously seen. He ran down and sent a message to Commodore Isthamar, the naval commander in this region. The Commodore readied ten ships, and set sail. Soon, they were within catapult-shot of the foreign vessels, and Isthamar raised his speaking horn, booming out, "Welcome to the lands of Caladonn, strangers. Do you come in peace?"
Fort Ilgard, North Germany
General Teclar, Commander of the Northern Front, shouted to the 10,000 troops arrayed in front of him. They roared back, they were ready for anything. He raised his sword, and gave the signal to move out. The men cheered, and fell into marching order behind him, marching into the unkown territory of the barbarians. All along the Northern frontier, four other Legions were doing the same thing, marching down into barbarian-controlled land. Also, in Western Poland, another five Legions were marching out, ready to fight. Swiftly behind the legions came settlers, building fine stone roads and sowing fields near newly-constructed houses. Caladonn was expanding once again.

OOC: I'm going to try to split up my posts as barbarians and Caladonn. Now I'm posting as barbarians. Would you rather do each fort individually? That's what I'm doing here.
IC: Fort Krakgan, Rhine River, Germany
Warlord Kurgan surveyed the field in front of the stone walls. 3,000 Taledonian legionaries were filing onto the battlefield, in full battle array. Kurgan ordered the catapults to begin firing, ancient machines, relics of civilization in Germany. However, they were still in good working order, and masonry and flaming tar were lobbed at the approaching enemies. 1,000 archers along the walls drew their bows, sighting for between the Taledonian shields, and their shots flew toward the enemy. Kurgan was confident, for the enemy did not know of what he had planned- a secret force of 500 cavalry, to come up behind the Taledonians. That, with his 500 infantry and 1,000 archers in the fort, should be able to quell the enemy opposition.
In the north, the barbarian tribes were less prepared, not expecting a full-scale assault by what they had previously believed to be peaceful fishermen. However, three tribes united, as the other three in that area were cut down by the Caladonnian military machine. They prepared a great ambush on the II Legion, planning to catch them by suprise.
In the east, the barbarians withdrew, biding their time and hoping to unite with other tribes.

Anywho - M'kay... if it helps the ships are about mid-sized as far as europian standards go and look something like viking longboats but with an aftercastle built into the hull. Oh, and they're unarmed trading ships... emphase on 'unarmed' :p
*The voyage across the north atlantic was a long audious journey of icy sea spray and freezing galeforce winds. It would've been a lot less audious if the destination had been relatively close by Iceland but that small isle had been ruled out as the destination early on - it was considered to be far too remote from the europian mainland in order to make proper contact with the foreign powers. Instead the delegation had decided to head for the old lands of Midgard, it was symbolic in a way - the exiles returning to the land of their forefathers - but those of celtic hertiage couldn't help but feel left out and many among the delegation made their feeling clear. To solve the growing arguement Olaf, a wisened old warrior considered by many to be the kingdoms best hunter and chosen leader of the delegation, offered a compromise. After the delegation had finished up it's duties in the old lands of midgard they would move south and make a second stop at the celtic homeland. There was still a few grumbles afterwards that it should be the other way around but overall the compromise was fully agreed upon.
And so after many months of endless ocean, land was sighted on the horizon. It was quite a symbolic moment for the nordic men - this was the land of their fore fathers afterall - but for the crew members onboard the trading vessels whom had been here many times before it was simply a time to make the routine navigation check.
As the ships drew closer to the mainland they were met by the sight of ten warships of unknown origin rushing forwards to meet them. This made a few of the traders uneasy but under the watchful eye of Olaf, the delegation held it's course. Soon they were in range of the other ships catapults and Olaf could see a tall slender man climb up the front of the one of the warships, with what looked like a speaker horn in hand (hard to tell over distance). Sure enough the mans voice was heard clearly in Olaf's ears shortly after.:*
"Welcome to the lands of Caladonn, strangers. Do you come in peace?"
*Gesturing for a speaker horn of his own, Olaf received one from the ships captain and made his reply:*
"Yes. Ve come in peace. Ve are how do you say, 'diplomats' from my homeland of Dracoriava. You are here to escort us to our destination ya?"

At each of the forts, the legions stayed far out of range of the barbarians, prefering to only cut off their supply lines and barricade them in their fort. They also fired huge stones from their trebuchets at the enemy forts to destroy sections of the walls or buildings or even large groupings of men.
Danube
Seeing that the barbarians were fleeing at the sight of the legions, they continued to move inland. After several weeks, they met up with the Emperors forces and would continue up into the country.
