ooc. don't really know how to do this, but in this post the Chief Nazgûl is having a conversasion with Sauron.

Sauron:"The corsairs are ready and send 5000 men and 20 ships to Osgilliath. Attack now to prepare for the assault on Minas Tirith. Cross the river quick and once you've established a beachhead over the river, send the Olog-Hai over the river. (for the ones who don't know, Olog-Hai are very large troll-like creatures who can stand the sunlight  I think the trolls who storm through Minas Tirith gate in the movie are Olog-Hai)"
Chief Nazgûl:"Yes my lord."
Sauron:"Move now quickly to Osgilliath to lead the attack. And let the other 8 join you."
Chief Nazgûl:"Yes, my lord."

As quick as possible the Chief Nazgûl mounts his fell beast and moves towards Osgilliath. Soon his companions join him and with a high pitched scream, they swoop down on Osgilliath. The Orks over prepared bridges and boats. The attack has begun........

The Company of Elves rode in their group.

They were all expert riders, nearly on par with the horsemen of Rohan, as there had been no horses in the sacred wood for many years some had not ridden for decades.

However for the immortal Elves skills were not lost easily, and they rode practising fighting with bow and sword from horseback, their fair banners stretched in the wind as they rode.

OOC: Ready and waiting for the fight. We might have to build some rudimetry siege equipment, eg battering ram no??

I dont think easterlings have cavalry as Rhun is a desert land (or haradrim i cant remember..)
Yr Widdfa
08-01-2005, 21:27
The Army of Rhun is never really described by Tolkien. I think he mentions some axemen, but it's not unreasonably for them to have cavalry, especially in a desert environment, which would be conducive to nomadic behavior.
Warta Endor

Rhûn wasn't a desert, but it was a plain. I can imagine they were a sort of Mongol like tribal society. The axemen were from Khand, thats sure.

OOC: Well its true that tolkien never really described Rhun, or it's army too precicely. But in my Rhun, there is "more civilized" settlement's on east shores of lake Rhun. However they are only small part of Rhun, and the rest are nomad's living in rather small tribes on the plains. These nomad tribes have been united by the King of Rhun. Mainly you could divide it so, that most of my army's heavy infantry and some heavy cavalry are recruited from the "civilised" areas, and light infantry and most of cavalry are from the nomadic tribes. Anyways in my imagination Rhun has always been strong on cavalry.

Captain Hallas Ecthelion stared into the dark. Lanters had been hung out over the blockade of 15 war galleys. Suddenly he froze. What was that? Was he just hearing things? He strained his eyes. There was a great black hole in the night nearby.
"Battle Stations!" he shouted. More lanterns were uncovered, revealing the Corsair ships trying to slip between the Swan prowed ships. The marines went into action straight away. Balistas were swung round to open fire with flaming bolts. Archers fired flaming arrows and ships swung round to ram the enemy.

I never knew she could be so beautiful. Puting his hand on Celebran's shoulder he said " I am honored to fight along side you. When this is over, maybe you can vist rohan in better days." Eomer reached for a Horn at his side and blew a note. Answering notes roared in the darkness. The host of Rohan rode up to eomer and jutted their spears towards the oncoming battle. "Soon, very soon i shall have my vengance." Eomer turned back towards the host, and rode to where he could hit the spears of the front with his sword. Bashing his sword on their weapons he shouted the war speech of the king. "Arise! Arise riders of Theoden! Fell deeds await: fire and shaughter! Spears shall be shaken, sheild shall be splintered! A sword day! A Red day, ere the sun rise's! Ride now! Ride Now! Ride for ruin and worlds ending! Turning again to face the host he shouted "Death!" the rohirrim shouted in turn "Death!" yeah isnt weather control on your behalf God moding? And saying that you dont want ships being burned down is pretty rediculous. Greek war galleys used a early form of naplam, and in naval battles before the discovery of gunpowder it was easier to burn a ship down then blow it apart with catapults or whatnot. Fire attacks and marine on ship action was the way to do it back then Eckhlon.

About naval battles: Everything Kelmdrop just said is true, and you really can't control weather. Other point is that your navy(if you are using youre whole navy) should outnumber that blockade very easily, since it's only a part of South Gondors fleet wich should be outnumbered by Corsairs fleet.

The lances of the Knights fell level as one. Amidst the vast host in the green livery of Rohan the Knights shone like the sun in their burnished armor. Hallas waited for the Corsairs to come closer and commanded the fire ships to open fire. The long tubes projecting from the bows spewed liquid fire at the enemy ships. Archers sitting among the rigging continued to rain arrows down on the enemy ships. Meanwhile, the marines armed themselves and prepared to face the enemy when they came close. The balistae fired their flaming bolts into the oncomming fleet.
Just before the Corsairs came into contact, the galleys lept forward to ram the enemy. The swan prowed ships struck the Corsairs with a tremendous crash.

Rohans horse archers still could see figures of Rhun's soldiers trying to hide on/behind the wall, and opened fire on them. For about 10 seconds the rohirrim could ride about freely, but then Rhun's archers stood up to counter and fired a cloud of arrows on the skirmishing rohirrim. Quickly they lowered again just to rise and fire again in couple of seconds. Simultaneously 10 catapults deeper in the city fired theyr whirling shots at the rohirrims main force staying further away. Those of the archers who had the courage turned their fire on the hideous beast swooping down among them. The marines were taking losses, but so far were holding their own. The fire ships continued to pour their deadly payload into the enemy ships, now in easy range.
The armada began to pull closer together, preventing the enemy from separating them from one another. Hallas had anchored his flank just outside the mouth of the river so that they could escape if things went south. Two of the proud, Swan ships went down as they were rammed, but they others held.

In the book, the Army of the Dead helped Aragorn stop the Corsairs. When he arrived at Pelennor, it was with an army of men from the Southern Fiefdoms who had been left there to fight the Corsairs, and with the Dunedain. So the Army of the Dead would be controlled by Aragorn naturally, but if Pelennor Fields occurs, they should not make an appearance.

Imrahil smiled.

Three days later the army marched out. 5,000 Knights and 6,500 infantry from Dol Amroth, Lamedon, Lebinnen, Belfalas and Pelargir. The southern forts were stripped to their minimum. They made their way up the Anduin in transports, but would land some miles south of Minas Tirith, due to the contest over Osgiliath.

---Minas Tirith Throne Room---

A messenger arrived, having riden fast and light ahead of the Southern Armies.

"My Lord, Prince Imrahil sends greetings and marches North with some 11,000 men. They will arrive to our South within a week. (timeframe gd enough?)"

"Excellent. How many Knights does he bring?"

"I am told that a host of 5,000 is being assembled."

"Good, good. It is a pleasant sound to hear good news for a change."

He returned to his maps.

"I shall to glad to have Imrahil here to advise me."

OOC: Especially since I still hold the river and can use it for transportation. Here it is. If parts of this looks familiar, it's cause no one could put it better than Tolkien.

Citizens of Minas Tirith crowded the gates excitedly as the Host of the South approached. As the lead companies came into view they broke into cheers, crying the names of captains and fiefdoms as they marched into the city.

So the companies came and passed through the gate, men of the outlands marching to defend the City of Gondor in a dark hour. The men of Ringlo Vale behind the son of their lord, Dervroin striding on foot; From the uplands of Morthond, the great Blackroot Vale, tall Duinhir with his sons, Duilin and Derufin and a large company of expert archers; From Anfalas and Langstrand far away, a long line of men; From Lamedon, grim hillmen without a captain; Hirluin the Fair of the Green Hills from Pinnath Gelin with a company of gallant green-clad men. And last and proudest, Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth, kinsman of the Steward, with gilded banners bearing his token of the Ship and Silver Swan, and 5,000 Knights in full harness riding grey horses and behind them, a company of men at arms, tall as lords, grey-eyed, dark-haired, singing as they came.

Imrahil, having made the parade for the benefit of the frightened citizens, now departed from the army and rode straight to the citidal with several captains from the South. The clattered into the Fountain Court and dismounted. Imrahil knelt a moment before the White Tree, then rose and entered the Throne room.
"Hail, Steward of Gondor!" he cried as he entered.

The Steward motioned him forward

"Orcs gather in Osgilieth in untold numbers. We let them come across the water front as we could not possibly defend it. Faramir and his men guard the Pelennor forts and the wall, although they do not have the manpower to hold for long if attacked by the full force of the enemy armies. We have no news from Rohan, and so it would seem that we are alone. For the moment anyway. What counsel can you offer your Steward?"

"Forward men, forward! " The Rohirrim marched through the hail of catapult fire, running forward inbetween shots to delay the Rhun troops firing. The Mounted srceen had seen the orcs, and they and the elves moved to intercept them. Now the Rohirrim where within a few hundred yards of the city, moving ever closer. Stiil, with the catapults raining chaos down on them, it would be hard.

Dain saw the orcs from afar and knew it could end in disaster for the Rohirrim, his dwarves could change the situation in favor of the free peoples and he ordered them to assault Edoras alongside the Rohirrim.

The catapults and ballistas were still firing as fast as they were able to the rohirrim troops. As the troops got within range, all archers jumped up and fired a cloud of arrows in the dwarvish troops. After that they kept on firing steadily. Even as the dwarvish bowmen caused some casualties, the archers were rather well protected by the wall.

"Your highness! I have good news and bad news. The dwarves have arrived and have joined the battle alongside with the rohirrim. Most of rohirrim and dwarf forces are charging towards our gates, but the weird thing is that neither have any siege equipment like ladders or battering rams. Therefore we should easily hold the walls. Good news is that the orcs have finally arrived. A couple of thousand rohirrim went to intercept them."

"Damn. I should've known that those orcs don't have any tactical sense. They should've remained silent and wait until the rohirrim and dwarves are all tied up by theyre assault on Edoras, and then attack theyre back together with my troops from Harrowdale. Now this could go bad if they are able to destroy the orcs first and then change theyre target to me."

Quickly the strongest of them moved to the front of the group and charged the gates, trying to force them open.
Once they had gotten close enough to the citywalls, the dwarves focussed on the enemyforces on the wall, a job for their throwing axes.

"Pikes and spears to the front, when they're close, open ranks to let them through. We will turn and cut them down. Archers, give support! Quickly, maggots!!!"

One of the Nazgûl, wich flew high over Minas Tirith, saw the army of the south entering the city. He flew back to Osgilliath to alarm Ancalagon, the commander of the army there. By now there were about 30000 orcs and Uruks in Osgilliath. There also were 500 trolls and 50 Olog Hai in Osgilliath, for "heavy" support. The troops were currently attacking the Pelenor walls with siege engines and battering rams.

"Your highness, The Dwarves have managed to advance to our walls despite our heavy archer and catapultfire. Now a large force of them is swarming in front of the gate. We get strange reports that some strong looking dwarves are trying to bash themselfs at the gates to open them. However they seem to have no succes becouse of the addition's our engineer's have made to the gates."

"Good enough. I hope the orcs can survive the cavalrycharge from rohirrim. If that is the case then we can win this battle rather easily, as our mainforce is still in Harrowdale. However for now send the 1st batallion of Royal Foot Guards (600 crack heavy infantry) to hold position behind the gates in case they somehow get to open the gates. Also arm them with spears in case they try to cavalrycharge in."

"Aye your highness."

---Edoras, The Gates-------

The situation at the gates was rather chaotic. On the walls many Rhun's soldiers were dead from the arrows and throwing axes, but as one man died, his corpse was pulled back and another man climbed to the wall. Rhun had still many reserves. Outside the gates were the dwarves throwing theyre axes at the men on wall, and some dwarves still trying to bash themseves at the gates without succes. However at them was aimed an constant rain of throwing spears, small rocks and arrows from the wall. If the dwarves could see through the gates they could see the 600 strong Royal Foot Guard's Batallion form a phalanx with theyr long spears right behind the gates. In case the gates were torn down, the attacker's would have to run through a wall of spears to get to the enemy.

The Rohirrim Reach the dwarves, and began to fire arrows to aid them. The rohirrim took many loss's from catapults and balistas, but this was their city, they would not stop.

The dwarves suffered casualties but their army was still great. They focused on breaching the gates with their axes, under the cover of the Rohirrim archers that would be feasable.
Through the gates Thorin saw the heavily armed Rhun guards with their spears, but he did not fear them. He made his way to Dain to consult him
"How will we get past those spearmen?"
Dain had the answer ready "Once the gates are thrown down, the attack will be spearheaded by the Khazad Guard. I will lead them myself"
The Khazad Guard slowly made its way through the Dwarven ranks and prepared for the attack. These warriors were handpicked from the strongest and best of the Dwarfwarriors, each wore a terrifying mask. They were armed with the best weapons and protected by the finest armor available. If these veterans couldnt do it, then none could.

When the riders were in range the archers opened fire. The orcs were nervous as Glaurung screamed:
"Remember my orders you maggots! OPEN RANKS WHEN THEY ARE CLOSE!!!"
The orcs tried to execute the orders as told, but some didn't manage to open the ranks and were run down. The orcs hacked and slashed at the passing riders as the archers fired on the new oncoming ranks of riders.

Meanwhile, teh Eye was restless and unsure

Troops of the south reinforce Minas Tirith and the Ramas Echor still holds. *The eye swerves to Rohan* Ahhh, the peasants resist fiercly and the dwarves fight like devils. Fool of a Glaurung! He had to keep secrecy! If he survives he will pay for that! But the dwarves...*Eye swerves northward towards Erebor* Their strength in Rohan is great, their lands in the north must be weakened. If I mount an attack on the Lonely Mountain, it will fall. If I can tempt on of the dragons of the north to help in an attack, the dwarves and Thranduil's will perish and the road to Imlandris and Lorien is open. But Gondor still holds. Lets see *The eye swerves back to Gondor* I got 30000 orcs in Osgilliath and the Ramas Echor, 12000 in Rohan and I mustn't forsake Mordor which must be defended with about 35000 orcs. If I can assemble a force of 8000 Uruk-Hai, let the orcs from the Grey mountains and the Misty mountains attack from the north and west, it could be the end of Dwarves and Elves in the north! I must also reinforce the assault on Gondor. I will send 7500 orcs now and another 10000 later on. If my plan works...

As the Royal guard stopped in the middle of the orcs, they began to wheel around hacking in all direction with their long swords. The Second rank smashed into the orc mass, and used they same tatic. The third rank skirmished with the orcs then charged into them.

Edoras, the Gates------------

As the rohirrim and dwarves were trying to break through the gates, right inside them was a group of Rhun's engineers trying to reinforce and barricade the gates so that they would hold out for longer. Lucky enough for them that even as the walls were wooden, they were well built and from strong wood. Still it seemed impossible to hold the gates together for much longer. But behind the engineer's stood the 600 men of Rhun's Royal Guard in phalanx formation with theyre long spears and large shields, and swords hanging on theyre sides, blocking off the entire gate. No matter how tough warriors the dwarves and rohirrim be, it would be hard to break through this kind of defense.

The wall top's were still full of Rhun's men hurling javelin's, stones and arrows at the troop's swarming in front of the walls. Now as the rohirrim archer's joined the combat against them they were starting to suffer some real losses, however the rohirrim spears that were trying to stab the men on the wall were quickly cut of theyre tips. However keeping the wall's full of men was starting to drain Rhun's reserves, and the question was would they have enough troops left to block the assault when the gates would be torn down.

The orcs quickly moved closer, but with heavy casualties. Luckely their numbers were great (12000 total in the begining, with now some 1500 dead). The Uruk guard, heavily armoured and 750 strong, moved in now. They wre armed with shields, long swords, pikes, bows (200) and crossbows (50). when the crossbow men were close, they started firing. Due to their great power they pierced the though armour of the Royal guard, but because the space was cramped they also had some "friendly fire" accidents. The battle continued...

Turning around he destroyed the orc that shot him, only to shot five more times. Falling to the ground he saw his men battling around him. "The Glory will be eternal. " and with that he died.

As they neared, the dismounted and sent their horses back toward their own lines. Holding their shields above them, the Knights made their way to the gate and knelt beneath the shield roof. IC: Edoras, commander's post.

In his post Prinse Taras of Rhun and his Advisor's were watching as the gate slowly cought fire, and soon was in full flames.

Taras: "Shit. The gate is soon down. What troop's do we still have in reserve?"

Advisor: "On the walls we have 2nd Volunteer brigade, 2nd Infantry Brigade, 1st and 2nd Rhunion brigades and the remnant's of the abdly suffered 1st ligth brigade. However these troop's are in very little danger and need to reserves other than theyr own, so we can use all our remaining troop's to defend the gate and inner city.

Ready to move we have the heavy 1st Infantry brigade and the elite light infantry of 1st border batallion and 1st volunteer brigade. In addition to that we have the 1st Royal Guard batallino right behind the gates, and the HQ's reserves."

Taras:"Ok. We should be able to make it. Pull the 2nd Infantry down from the wall's and let the other unit's spread theyre lines, as the only part of wall under attack is the gate. The 1st Royal foot guard's will keep the gate as long as possible. If theyre overrun well let them deeper into the city, but not too far. When they've got hold of the gate and before they can advance to the wall's or deeper into the city we throw all our troop's to combat and hope to keep them still so long that King Wudaran is able to proceed with the plan. Now the rest is just up to the soldier's"

Advisor: "Aye. Also it is possible that we can get help from the orcs, it seems that the rohirrim propably left too few men to fight them."

Soon after this conversation was held the gates fell burning down. The road to the city was open. Directly after the gates fell, a loud sound of horn's was heard from Edoras. As King Wudaran and his men heard it in Harrowdale, he passed on the order.
