Colonization, 1612 (Open RP)

OOC: This thread is open to all nations interested in a Colonization RP. The only parameters for this thread is that the thread begins in the year 1612 AD, so no nukes, assault rifles, or airplanes of course. Nations can be colonizers, or native inhabitants of the "New Continent"
____________
In 1610, his excellency, Captain Johann von Blenheim, sailing far to the west of Kaufmanstad, explored a new continent, unihabited except for a small, savage native tribe. Two years later, he convinced the President of Kaufmanstad and the Congress to allow him to further his explorations and establish a colony in that lush land to the west....
It was late April by the time von Blenheim's three ships reached the alien shore of the New Continent. Governor, formerly Captain Von Blenheim guided his flagship, Nancy, along the coast until he came to a broad bay. The Governor directed that the smallest ship, Swift, investigate the wide river to the further west, and find a suitable place for settlement. After five days, the Swift returned and reported a nice peninsula on the river with a narrow isthmus.
"This peninsula is also blocked from view on the bay by an island, so should an enemy come looking for us, we would have time to prepare." said Captain Johnson of the Swift.
The next day, the three ships, the Nancy, Beacon, and Swift drew along side the peninsula and unloaded their cargos.
In a grand ceremony, Governor Von Blenheim walked ashore, and unfurled a special made Kaufmanstad flag and read aloud a carefully prepared speech.
"To all those present, greeting. In the name of his excellency, President Harold Jameson, and the High Congress of Kaufmanstad, I claim this land and hereby name it 'Presidentsland.'" With a beating of drums, three cheers were given by the 110 colonists.
"Furthermore, I hereby name the first town in this colony, 'Calvintown' after the late former President, Walter Calvin."
The next few weeks saw a flurry of activity as carpenters and laborers felled trees to built the town and fort to surround it and cleared fields for planting.
A plan of Calvintown, established, 1612.

For the glory of His Lordship, King Jacob Johansen, Captain Jameson Ault has set out in the command of three of His Majesties' most prized vessels, the Hyades, the Orion and the Swallow for the new world. These vessels bore colonists for this new world, especially younger sons of nobility who would not inherit land and were hoping for a superior position in this new world.
The ships are borne by the winds to the lands of southern America. Here they lay claim to the colony of New Ise and first establish "Johanstown".
Most notable among the colonists are the Governor, Captain Jameson Ault, his wife, Theresa, the pilots, Tim Lienhard, Bryce Van Dyke, and Mike Larsen, and a young man wishing to escape the annoyance of fellow thinkers disputing his work, one Isaac Newton. (OOC: :D )
In the month of May the colony was established and a fort was erected. It was time for the 217 colonists to begin planting and explore the surroundings for the layout and the natives. The cannon were erected on the walls of the fort and muskets were stowed.
These weapons:
cannon: 12 16-pounders
8 10-pounders
200 muskets
OOC: If the cannon size sounds wrong to anyone please inform me, it's been awhile since I looked at these things.

OOC: If your building stone fort, 16 pounds are probably good. But I think 10 pounds were the limit for 1612, I believe. Might have to do some research.
The fort at Calvintown is thusly armed:
-Nine Six pound cannon
-One ten pound cannon
-130 muskets
-75 Pikes

Soon after the construction of the Fort and Town, two supply ships with an additional 90 colonists arrive, raising the population to 200. The ships, Swordfish, Annie brought provisions to last until harvest, gunpowder, and 70 more muskets.
"Now that we are settled, I think its time we explored Presidentsland a little further." Stated Governor Von Blenheim. "Captain Rogers, I want you to take the Swordfish and explore the region to the South. Take careful note on the plant life, and stake claim to land you believe to be the best."
"Yes, Governor, it would be my pleasure."
The next day, Captain Rogers sailed South, carrying out the Governor's orders.
After a week, he noticed a boat sailing North. "Welcome to Kaufmanstad's Colony of Presidentsland! I am Captain Rogers, may I ask what you men are doing here?"
"Presidentsland? This is the Colony of New Ise!" replied the strangers.

(ooc-what part of the new world is this ? is it in the caribbean, or moreof the colonial areas ?)
*Far away in the open seas were seven ships, all seven were galleons, the lead three, the Vento the Aquila and the Tedesco were fitted for war, the other four, the Manzo the Topico the Compagno and the Nemico were carrying cannons fit for land, many colonists, muskets, supplies, wood, pikes, lots of extra wood chopping equipment, farming equipment, and what equaled about 75 trained musketers. these ships flew the old Kihamerian tricolor flag, they were dispatch from Kihameria not to many days ago, they would reach this new world probably within the day. On the deck of the Aquila, the flagship of the seven, stood a tall man and noble looking man, Gregory Perstance by name, he was the leader of this expedition, he was to establish a fort and then send word of his location, once the fort was established more supplies would be send and more soldiers and colonists, in due time the forces there would build a string of massive wooden forts to defend the lands that would be claimed by Kihameria.*

The Jordaxian frigate IGN Tartaros, along with its colonial fleet, spotted sight of the new world on the horizon.
"Land sighted Admiral, looks fairly flat. Good farming land if you ask me sir, just what we need. There's a natural harbour a bit to the south. Might I suggest we drop anchor there?"
"Yes, inform the other ships of the change in course, and inform me as we land. I want to be the first to set foot on the new continent, and claim it for his Majesty back home."

A Kaufmanstad ship, blown off course, rested in the harbor. The ship was the Republic and the crew was ashore, looking for water and provisions to restock for the voyage to Calvintown. Just then, a ship came into view.
The man on watch looked through his spy glass and reported, "Its not one of ours, Captain. I believe its flying the Jordaxian Flag!."
OOC: The setting for this RP is made up, I've labled it simply, the "New Continent."
The Porlanian Galleon GPN Calchades, after scouting the immediate shoreline, crashed into the rocks near a natural Harbor. The ship was commanded by Captain Robert Halberd, and had 400 men on board.
The crew sucesesfully dragged two Ten pound Cannons, 12 Six pound Cannons and One 12 pound Cannon off the ship. Almost all the food and Gunpownder supplies were rescued, and only about 50 Sailors were Killed in the escape.
Two days before, the other Galleon in the Expodition was sent back to Porlania to inform them of the Discovery, and there were Three other Frigates still Exploring the new lands. Halberd christened this new land Calchadia, in memory of the sunken Galleon and his men were confident that help was on it's way.
A forest was found to the north, with many wild Animals living there. A river was found to the south, running into the Harbour, and a Hill was found guarding the Forest, the River and the Harbour. On the Hill, a wooden Fort was built, made out of the strong Oak of Calchades, and with 150 Soldiers all armed with Muskets being backed up with the main Workforce of 200 Sailors armed with various Swords, Knives and Pistols.
The Galleon Corinth with Three Frigates called Theseus, Perseus and Lidius were on their way.

(OOC: This is actually, for my sake, kind of connecting with the history of Jordaxia that I set out. Don't be surprised when the natives start using Jordaxian rifles, M'kay? Alternatively, I can keep this one isolated, and you can pretend this entire bracketed statement never happened.)
IC: "Admiral, there are ships in the dock. Look like they're (Kaufmanstadian?)"
"Drop anchor here. Get a boat ready. Let's see what these people are doing here already."
"Aye aye sir."
The boat was sent in the direction of the Kaufmanstad harbour, carrying the admiral, and 10 musketeers.

Captain Baxter saw a what looked to be an Admiral in the boat rowing toward the Republic.
"Hello there! My ship was blown off course a few weeks ago on our way to Calvintown. We stopped in this unihabited harbor three days ago." called out the Captain. "Come aboard, we can talk further over lunch."[/i]
The Corinth, Theseus, Perseus and Lidius scouted the coast for Several days before finding a Native Settlement. They Traded cloth and Beads for Maize, Tobbaco and Meat. Admiral Galat, the Commander of the Expedition, found that they were Ill equiped for an Attack, so he Stormed the Town with 500 Musketeers, overwhelming the Natives.
The Town was then used as an Town for the Colonists, many Natives Enslaved to improve the Defenses of the Town. In the Attack, Tons of Food and Valubles were captured, and Corinth and Perseus went on to find Calchades carrying these Supplies, Leaving Theseus and Lidius behind to Guard the Town.

"Captain, we had not expected to see settlers before ourselves arrive on this isle. We are not a greedy people however, and will not grab the land from either you, nor excessively from the natives. We do however, need a lot of land to grow food, as our own islands can barely support our population any more. This land that you seem stranded on is perfect for farming. You say you were on your way to Calvintown? If you would tell us where this colony is I shall gladly transport you back to it, in return for the claim that you have established on this area."
(Jordaxia is like a much larger equivalent of micronesia, and there isn't much farming ground there, so as you understand, if admiral Gibson claims this land, he will be likely to both recieve this land as his own county, and recieve a large award from the King.

30-04-2004, 00:51
Captain Baxter laughed. "Admiral, of course you can settle here! I was just passing through. The New Continent is big enough for both of us and more! When you are settled, come to Calvintown, we will probably have a surplus at harvest, so should your people need help, we will be more than willing to give it. Good Luck in your endeavors here."
___________
When the first three ships arrived back in Kaufmanstad and reported the lushness of Presidentsland, numerous companies opened up to transport people to the colony. All manner of foodstuffs could be grown in Presidentsland. Fruits, such as apples, pears, and peaches, grew especially well, as did grapes. A vineyard had been established near Calvintown, and new farms were being established around the town. Two new settlements were founded. Calvintown out grew the fort and was now home to 300 people. Presidentsland's first boat, a small fishing boat has been launched. New Stuville, across the river from Calvintown, is now home to 100 farmers and carpenters. Upriver, an iron ore deposit had been discovered near the falls. The new town of 90 people was called Irontown. New Stuville, and Irontown are both armed with three 6 pound cannon, and muskets for all the settlers. Calvintown has now 300 muskets and 50 professional soldiers to man Fort Blenheim at Calvintown.
EDIT: OOC: Let's assume that Jordaxia is settling 150 miles north of Presidentsland.

IC: The Tomzillian colonization fleet caught sight of the new continent. When news of the this uncolonized continent reached the shogun, he had sent forth a colonization/conquest fleet. Admiral Thomas Shienori commanded this fleet. One of the sailors notified him of the sight of land. Captain Kiryu Desomachi asked, "What will happen when we land, admiral?" Thomas replyed, "Land, set up a camp, kill any natives that oppose us, and declare the land for Shogun Gojira. In fact, when we land, the camp we set up will be named Camp Gojira after the shogun. Tell the troops to disembark." "Yes, admiral." said Kiryu. The troops got into smaller boats and headed towards shore. They carried muskets and katanas for hand-to-hand combat.

OOC: It seems some people brought a lot of soldiers, but no farmers. I think some people are in for famine.
OOC: I noticed this, but then in most cases there won't be a lot of real soldiers. Rather, there were muskets for every able person and a handful on watch. The people had weapons but few if any professional soldiers historically for a colony.
Thanks Kaufmanstad, the cannon I've got would basically be the armament of a ship, but now that I think about only a couple would be left behind, the ships wouldn't be without them because of the need of defense on the return journey, so only a few (three or four) would be left behind. More would be shipped later. Hence, cut my cannon to three light guns and one heavy gun.
And by the way, I'll be landing 100-200 miles from Presidentland (we're shooting for a location that happens to be about 150 miles away, but no naval travel was entirely certain even with a good pilot, plus we'll have to explore the surrounding coast from wherever we land for a good location).
I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, but I didn't find the specific location of your colony in your post (if you had it in there please post it again), so I couldn't really plan it with consideration of your location.
IC: The planting finished near the beginning of June. Meanwhile contact had been established with a local tribe of natives, and while little is known of the political structure of the nearby natives (OOC: as in things like the Iriqouis league or independent groups), what contact that had been made was friendly, though no real agreement or exchanges had yet been reached.

"...that continent being within one month's sail westward, seven weeks homeward, has been discovered and is in the early stages of colonization. No Santa Barbaran has set foot on the new continent yet, and this has provided us with incentive enough. The Company shall send an expedition consisting of two vessels and three hundreds men to explore for suitable harbors and locations..."
"...on the question of leadership, your Grace, surely it is best that a naval Captain command the expedition, as his expertise in navigation, sailing and ocean lore is essential to the venture's success. I am able to nominate several within Carvajal who can command the two vessels, and one in particular as leader of the voyage. Lord Estaban del Rey, a fine and upstanding gentleman, bold and fit for just such a mission..."
"...we are also lacking in funds for all requisite provisions. I have sent Jorge with this message, he shall have need to negotiate another loan, your Grace..."
The contact with Kaufmanstad explorers had been resolved peacefully, the fort had been erected within the week before the arrival of explorers so there was no great conflict in the claims. Ise had landed 160 miles south of Calvintown initially, 150 miles north of Johanstown, and claimed the area south from this initial landing point, choosing to settle in Johanstown due to its position at the delta of a great river alluded to by natives nearer to the initial landing point, some 120 miles north of Johanstown. Exploration had continued to 160 miles south of Johanstown and claim was laid to the coastal areas explored and 20 miles inland, though this was extended greatly along the river. The temperate climate surrounding the delta was dominated by rich sediment brought from upstream, yet areas to the southern end of the delta, some 6 miles south of Johanstown and 4 miles south of the southern reaches of the early New Ise farmland, were laden by mangrove swamps, around which a radius of approximately 2 to 3 miles was made far less liveable by the annoying insects that lived there and the disease breeding in swamps. Nonetheless the estuary was filled with a variety of sea creatures including all manner of fish useful for the nutrition of the settlers and an area of several square miles was free of the trials of the swamps.
Governor Ault considered the contact with Kaufmanstad and decided to send an envoy north, for the purpose of collaborating with them for the mutual support of established claims and establishing the depth into the inland of coastal claims. The initial proposal was 20 miles, though the envoy was instructed that if possible this should be extended greatly.
Alternately, the envoy was to discover the nature of the land surrounding Calvinstown and the resources found by the settlers of Presidentsland and to set forth for the leaders of Presidentsland these attributes within the lands claimed by Ise as a means of ascertaining what each had access to, that thereby the colonies and their mother countries might have the mutual benefit of trade.
OOC: Later I'll say what resources we have found, but I've got to take care of some stuff in RL.
Jordaxia
30-04-2004, 08:34
The Jordaxian settlers disembarked from the group, and the frigates circled the natural harbour. The first order of business would be to get a message back to Mother Jordaxia, to inform her that the new world had been found, and that other nations were establishing all around. Contact with the tribes had been very productive, especially during the difficult months when there was too little livestock to slaughter, as all had to be kept for breeding. Given that the wheat and suchlike took time to grow, the natives had been very helpful in sustaining the Jordaxian settlers.
(That was back message, this is now.)
As a far larger group of Jordaxian ships appeared on the horizon, the first crops of the season were yeilding, and for the first time, there was plenty of food in the encampment. More farmers disembarked from the ship, and were guided to where there crops were.
(There are now about 2000 farmers on the Jordaxian colony, and a small town, with merchants who seek out the native populaces for trade.)
Emissaries were sent to the surrounding colonies on the continent.
"Those of you with inefficient food to survive may consider yourselves invited to purchase it for a reduced rate, provided that we have your assistance should hostilities arise. (There are only about 75 musketeers, so protection is minimal.)

30-04-2004, 08:49
OOC: Technology in Marshahnk took a slightly different course than in most places. For example, more emphasis was placed on metalworking, and gunpowder did not come into use until much later. Of course, a good crossbow was as effective as early muskets....
IC: Three more ships fought their way across the wild seas to reach the new land- two broad vessels carrying farmers and craftsmen following a warship, which was swifter, and carried three ballistae instead of one.
They made landfall in a mountainous region to the north of the earlier settlements. Locating a valley with a river large enough to sail up, the three newcomers moved inland until they came to a divide in the great river. In between the two tributaries, which were of approximately equal size, the Marshahnkian colonists (150 in all) discovered a large, flat-topped hill and a deep forest.
They constructed a rough fort on the hill top, then began gathering supplies and building a more permanent structure around it. Seawolf, the warship, was sent with 25 men to establish an outpost within sight of the sea, and the other soldiers started the construction of a wall through the forest, to protect the new colony from rear attack. Finally the colony's Governor, Ferid Torgan, christened the growing town Tor Verden, naming it for the unfamiliar trees that filled the valley.
OOC: Sorry about the low detail, I'm trying to get caught up...

I thank thee for the supply ships. As for the colony itself, I have named it Q'in Q'arn, in honor of the First Lord of Bei Ling. There are about 10 houses, a dock, a wall around the settlement, and a port for the ships. About half of my force has been devoted for exploration of this land: the rest on construction. I have assigned the settlers to cleared lands as well as those 'safe' from any dangers. It is my hope that this colony serves the Kingdom well.

As the Corinh and Perseus came to Calchades (the Colony), the Sailors rejoiced. Now, Chalchades had a population of 700 Townspeople and 400 Soldiers all armed with Muskets.
The Corinth and Perseus both continued south, until they spotted a Fort overlooking the a bay with four Rivers running into it. Admiral Galant ordered the Semaphore Flags to be raised, and let them say:
"We are from the Merchant Nation of Porlania. We belive that you are Colonists from Kaufmanstad from your Flag. We would like to come to your Harbour."

OOC: I'd like to reiterate a previous statement--think small. 1100 men couldn't possibly fit onto two ships, and even the colony of 600 (while possible) would require several ships (at least half a dozen) to start out with that many. And please post where you are with relation to someone whose location has been established, both your claims and your town.
IC: In the month of July in the year of our Lord 1612 an expedition was launched from Johanstown in the colony of New Ise to explore into the great river on whose delta the settlement of Johanstown subsisted, called by the natives the River Sidonah, this name being also adopted by the settlers. The might of the river did not permit the settlers to overcome the current on its waters, thus along its bank wandered a band of explorers, occasionally using small craft to make a crossing. The local natives had become friendly, and thus far minor trinkets had been exchanged in token of this friendship. Two of the Ise ships had left shortly after the arrival, yet the Hyades had stayed until this time, when Governor Ault wrote a letter to his King and country. Excerpts are here recorded, having arrived in Ise early in the month of September, just before the autumn gales.
My Lord, this is a land of exceptional beauty. The land is lush and yields its fruit gladly. Its mountains we have beheld to be great and powerful, its rivers strong and mighty, and its natives both wonderful and terrible, for...
This land has power to sustain far more life than ever we imagined. The natural world florishes, a beautiful array of birds has been partially recorded by some of our more talented friends, yet the portraits here enclosed do no justice to their wonder. Even so, there is much land that is not laden with trees that it may be farmed and yield grain, and we would inform you that we may support thousands upon it. We will gladly accept more men for the use of this land for this one settlement only while many others may be established upon the land...
...that others have also established themselves upon this land, and their might is as ours. To the north we have friends in colonists of Kaufmanstad, having established unto their King Presidentland. I reccomend that we maintain with their mother country a friendship and that we establish with them peaceful exchange for the benefit of both our peoples. Already I have sent to the colony emmisaries to this end. These emmisaries having already arrived at their settlement of Calvinstown in the middle of the month of June, we await their return with news of the precise nature of Kaufmanstad's response...

*the Kihamerian colony was workingo uot as expected,by this time at least a small pallisade was up, a apple orchard was up, and a wheat field was planted within the long walls and trenchs of the Kihamerian colony, the soldiers there were on patrol at all times incase the natives were to attack, which they did, a group of natives approached the colony with tomahawks, clubs, and bows, the natives fired a small volley of arrows at the wooden walls curiously, the wooden walls stood firm, and the Kihamerians ansewer with a cannon blast, the natives ran off frightened of thei new technology, the Kihamerians had a small victory for the moment. As evreything was going fine, there was however one snag... the colony was not named, after some debate the named 'Graben' was agreed upon, and in a small ceremony the Kihamerian tricolor flag was raised up, and the colony called 'Graben'.*
OOC: The Isle of Malka will be a colony of 300 people on an island 40 miles SSW from the colonists of Kaufmanstad.
IC: Screams of joy filled the ship Republic as colonists reached a new island. Colonists from 5 other ships as well as the Republic quickly made it to shore to immediately find a building spot. The spot the landed near, however, was just right, as there was a water source, the shore was pretty steep, allowing big ships to dock at a future port and planty of forest to build with. To the left of the spot, a fertile field was seen. They were happy, as being cramped on the ship they endured hardships and also a sloop accompanying the ship was lost.
A walled colony was soon built named Shipton. It wasn't big, but it had a church, and a few merchants moved in.

Anyway, I am 100 Miles south-east of Presidentland. And I will make it 300 Colonists with 200 Soldiers, Okay?
OOC: It's okay, it's not like I was going to kill you for it, just wanted to make sure everyone knew.
But just so you know, you'll need support from your homeland for the soldiers, with only a few people it's very hard to maintain any troops, so you'll need some extra food shipped from your main country or even the soldiers will have to do some work. Personally, I don't have any professional soldiers, just weapons for everyone. You could do otherwise, but people that aren't helping get food or build the colony in some way are going to need support. That's just for your information, and something to think about. And remember that if anybody engages in piracy then your soldiers are in trouble. Hey! I've got an idea!
IC: "Word has been received of more colonies established. Most recently in our area is a colony from Porlania. We have found that they have a considerable number of soldiers, thus necessitating that shipments from their homeland shall be sent to them. We thus reccomend that we may be able to gain a favorable diplomatic stance with them if we offer to assist them in the case of piracy." Sean Hopf, an advisor to Jameson Ault, spoke to the governor in relation to this opportunity in the middle of July, 1612.
"A wise decision... you are correct. I shall be sending you to establish contact within the week with the colony."

My Lords-
Today we encountered the A'tchui people, who seem to live west of our location. We barted simple things; glass, blankets, hatchets, and knives. However, in exchange for such things the A'tchui led us to several fishing grounds that would prove useful for fish farms.
I ask your permission in establishing such farms.
As for other items of progression:
-A discovery of wild orchids SE of our location
-Construction of a water mill
-Addition of a dock to the port
-Finishing of some sails
-Finding of a sulfur deposit for gunpowder
-Discovery of a strong vine that is stronger than any hempinias root

(OOC:Ise, it is a deliberately oversized colony, as the Jordaxian isles are starving at this point. Basically, they needed more food, and funded a vast colonisation effort. Other nations were not starving, and so could colonise at their leisure.)
IC: The now established colony, called New Chambers, was putting the final touches to the walls it started. More ships were coming in, on an almost daily basis, delivering more colonists, equipment, and rifles for the forces there. 4 cannon were brought also. Food was being taken back to mainland Jordaxia, and the Prime Minister was exceptionally pleased with the non-hostile relations established from the natives.
The admiral, now established as governor of the growing colony, was sending out explorers to find the Native tribes. Word had been filtering in about skirmishes taking place both in small tribal settlements, and colonies being attacked. The explorers were to deliver messages promising assistance if they were attacked by more aggresive colonies, in exchange for not being attacked by the tribes.
Total inhabitants of new chambers, and surrounding area.
100 Musketeers
2200 farmers
100 merchants.
4 cannon.
30 more ships incoming to establish a second settlement, further inland, or to the South.

The pilot master on the April River waved to the Porlanian ships. "I have just been given permission to guide you to our wharf. The merchants in our town welcome any trade. We have foodstuffs, lumber, tobacco, various fruits, and iron ore. However, we have not accumulated that much ore. Also, Governor Von Blenheim has invited your Captain to dine with him this evening."

Can everybody quickly say where they settled, in relation to Calvintown, and Presidentsland in general? It'll make it easier when I place my next colony. Those 30 ships that were being sent to found another colony have been re-directed to New Chambers. Needless to say, more farmers are being brought, along with explorers, a few more troops (maybe 50-100, I've yet to decide), merchants, bankers, diplomats, and politicians. It is Jordaxian policy to establish any colony as a constituency when its populace reaches 3000. However, they can and will be amalgamated. Silly to have thousands of seats in parliament.

The Jordaxian navy. The branch of our armed forces we take most pride in. Jordaxian naval vessels will be glad to assist in any naval campaign friendly colonial cities find themselves in.
My ships are a cross between turtle ships, and man o' wars. Very powerful, the armour is curved, so shots bounce off, and there is a fully enclosed roof, so that water slides off easily. It is far bigger than a standard turtle ship, however, and has 30 cannon per side. Couple that with relatively impregnable armour, and it is a war winner. We build plenty of them, given our location.
P.S. I have written an entire history of Jordaxia, so these ships existed a while before this RP came up. Also, the Jordaxian isles are athiests, so there are no churches, save for that which immigrants build. (It happened because a scientist claimed that he had recieved a message from god proclaiming that the Jordaxians should cease their worship of him, so that they could devote themselves to science. It has been evolved, and refined over the last 2000 years though, and mainly people regard the "vision" as a hallucination that the scientist had through over exposure to mercury, and its compounds.)
Now that you've had the history lesson, naval protection can be negotiated, for a number of things. Base materials to build them, trade of wools, and dyes and so on, and various other luxuries.

03-05-2004, 15:18
Trust me, they are a tried and tested design, used before 1612 by the Koreans when they were invaded by Japan. A few modifications have been done, to bring them to 1612 standards, but apart from that, they are the same. Very sea worthy in coastal waters, which we are in, less so in oceans. However, since most engagements that may be fought would be relatively coastal, they will be unhindered.
The more astute of you may notice that this ship is in AoE 2. But it was certainly used, and was an incredible design. I just first found out about it from there.

OOC: Just so people know, you're only going to be able to send one fleet accross the ocean per year. The time it takes is 2 to 4 months. There is a three or four month period when you can't send ships out, the storm seasons (if you're in areas with a climate similar to Virginia or farther south then this means hurricanes, if you're farther north it means gales, and either way it would be dumb to send an expedition during this season), this is about August to October, but you want to leave a couple weeks on either end just in case. After October it's getting toward winter and that's a bad time to have new settlers coming in, so you really can only have voyages from February or March to about July, unless of course you're farther south and winter isn't the same for you (since Presidentland is said to be about the same latitude as Jamestown and most people are north of them this isn't the case in general, except that I'm south :D ). Just for your information (and if anyone lives on the east coast, feel free to correct me about the storm season).
IC: On November the seventeenth, the year of our Lord 1612, five large ships from Ise set sail, bearing passengers for the New World and replies to the letters sent from the colony. With storms having just departed the tropical regions two weeks before the pilots anticipated fair weather and the assistance of a strong wind and ocean current of this season. On January the twelfth of 1613 the ships arrived at Johanstown, finding it in a favorable state as the second crop of the year was approaching harvest. Governor Ault's assertion that more men could be sustained was to be borne out, and two ships disengaged from the fleet, adding 181 colonists to the 219 already at Johanstown, the settlement having been blessed with 9 children and suffering the deaths of 7 men, six by disease and one by an accident. The population thus being 400 men, the supply of armaments was increased.
The remaining three vessels headed north, stopping after a journey of fifty miles in a natural harbor overlooked by a string of hills. Natives had told the settlers of Johanstown of this place, one they had not themselves beheld as the harbor was hidden by the shape of the land. Thus 283 men found themselves in a place that was said to be excellent for the use of the plowman and bordered by places extraordinary for the abundance of minerals of all manner for the benefit of man. A little stream bordered the colony and a forest extended a minor arm to within a mile of the colony.
In Johanstown the friendship of the natives was furthered by the demonstration of the metal goods of Ise and the natives' instruction concerning those native plants which were good for the use of man. A new emissary had been sent to Presidentsland, and another to the colonies of Jordaxia, he being accompanied by that certain peculiar young man before mentioned, for while he was no diplomat he was a curious youth and desired to behold other lands and the wonders of them, though he would not be found to interact with the men of the land. Already he had been useful to New Ise and had thus secured for himself this request, having improved by some peculiar ability the gunnery tables of the cannon. Claims had been extended to some 70 miles inland, although along the river the claim went to a length of 180 miles along the river and a distance to either side of 30 miles, tapering gradually over the last sixty.
OOC: I will get more specifics on the settlements later.

*As the new day arose,so did a problem, the only way for supplies to arrive from a boat would be to row them over, this would not be good as small row boats were prone to tipping over if their load got to heavy, so, the colonists decided to begn work on a dock, it would take them awhile, but the payoffs would be worth it, however they first sent a small scouting party( 3 musketers,3 pikemen, 3 militiamen, and 15 woodcutters) to scout for some wood to build the dock with, the wood originally shipped was for building contruction, not a large dock, so the men sat out, ordered to go no more than ten miles from the colony to find wood, they all had a weapon of some sort, but they had no defenses, other than the leather armor of the musketers and pikemen.*

Captain Jones of the Kaufmanstader Sloop, Nymph, came on deck as officer of the watch. His ship wasn't well defended, and there were only eight crewmembers. Captain Jones looked through his spy glass, first at the coast, then to the south, then to the north, where he saw a ship.
"Smith! Raise the Kaufmanstad colors! I think we're being followed."
"Aye, sir."
Captain Jones, not sure of the other ship's intentions, waved to it. He also prepared the note that the Governor gave him.
(OOC: Kay Son saw my Kaufmanstaders from a ship, correct?)
Unknown to the many colonists living their daily lives in this 'new land', a half-dozen pairs of eyes watched them from the surrounding area.
One of the hunters, who we shall known as Bear, watched intently, his face grim. Since the invaders had arrived he had watched them, returning to his village each night with more tales of woe. The settlers were disruptivel they destroyed trees which had stood for hundreds of year to make room for themselves, feeding the ancient wood into their fires without thought or care. Numerous creatures had fallen to their strange weapons, like a staff that could spit fire, while some of their number stood in an unnatural skin that shone from the glare of the sun.
Worse still, they appeared to have no intention of leaving. Tribesmen, scouting the villages of the other invaders had indicated that the Hasamo (OOC: not very original but in rush sorry) had made contact with the invaders, offering them mystical items in return for the white man's unholy belongings.
Bear sneered; why would the tribes not take action? Their tribe alone had over five hundred warriors with which to fight, and with the support of their neighbouring tribes they could chase these invaders from their home.
But, the elders had decided; they were to leave the white men be, and hopefully they would cause his people no harm.
Indeed, they had given Bear nothing to trouble him so, but he could not shake a disturbing feeling, deep within, almost as if his ancestors were trying to warn him of a terrible fate...
From the entrance to the vilage, Bear watched as a number of white men, brandishing their unholy sticks pace inrto the surrounding forest.
"Let us go, we shall follow them." Bear muttered to young Hawk, his brother. With a stealth that could be unmatched by these... people, his warriors began to shadow the retreating group. Bear gripped his hunting knife; why was he so unsure?

Just a slight mistake. July it is.
Kubadi, the Jordaxian colony of new Chambers offers support to native tribes, only if the tribes are victims of aggression. So, if anybody starts with the whole native annihilation thing, then we offer support. We don't support attacks for no reason by the natives though.

Kay Son: My mistake!
Captain Jones watched the strangers paddle around in their canoe towards their ship. Another glance through his spyglass noticed some of the same foreign people on a nearby cliff. Jones got worried.
"Just to be on the safe side..." he muttered. "Arm the swivel guns, and ready the muskets, however, if they do come on board to pay a visit, stay friendly, we are not here to start a war."
As the canoe paddled closer, Captain Jones fired a swivel gun over the strangers' heads. The shot wizzed over the canoe, and splashed into the water 15 yards away
The crew of the Explorer exchanged looks. The boat paused. Then, they quickly turned around, and paddled the other direction at top speed.
As for the members of Outpost 1, they quickly huddled, then dispered into the jungle.

Captain's Log
May 8th
First taste of foreigners. From the reports, I can gather that they probably have the capabilities of a squadron or a fleet. In order to fully protect any other intrusions, I have set forth these measures:
1) to adequetly supply the outposts with stronger firepower
2) to see if there is any more sulfur within the area for muskets
3) to adequetly fortify the outposts
4) establish towers at key select areas
So far only 3 and 4 can be achieved. Trade negotiations are still being dealt with on finding these deposits.

The Jordaxian colony of new chambers was bustling with activity. Drills with the musketeers had trained them to be a fine force, and they had no fear that they could, along with the ships in port, repel any enemy attacks. The farmers outwidth the port city were given training, and could form an effective militia if necessary. Envoys were sent to find native tribes and open a dialogue with them. Everything was going well.
(Obeserve the ambiguity. It would be boring if nothing happened, so I'm leaving it to another player to start something with me, hostile or not. Just that we haven't been interacting with anyone much.)

Watching as the canoe turned tail and ran, Captain Jones decided to approach the watch tower on the cliff and try and communicate with the strangers. The Nymph was anchored near shore and Jones and two seamen rowed to land. One sailor carried a Kaufmanstad flag, the other, a musket. Captain Jones wore his finest and his sword. The Captain also carried Governor Von Blenheim's message to any foreigners. The Captain and his party slowly walked up the cliff.
Sargeant Yun T'in heard the noises coming up from the bush. He motioned his troops to hide in the woods. All of them did, easily blending in with the greenery. After a while, the noises came closer. A sign was made. Strings were pulled. Bolts were notched. Polearms slipped out of their holsters. All was silent as the foreigners crept closer.

*As time went on the scouting party made it back to the colony, being meet by their allies and a group of indians trying to communicate, the language barrier was difficult to breech, but eventually a form of sign language was used, after a short time a small charter was signed, both sides agreeing a mutual peace, even though the indian tribe name was still unknown as sign language cant pronounce names. Mainly information was traded between the two, how to effeciently chop treesm fr information on where good trees grew, how to effeciently haul stone, for where stone deposits were, and mainly where sulphur deposits were, eventually the natives left and makeshift maps were made of where the indians said the deposits were.*

Captain Jones and his party continued to approach the watch tower. Out of nowhere, it seemed, an arrow wizzed through the air, and struck Seaman Smith, killing him. Seaman Anderson fired his musket into the woods, and a scream was heard in the brush. Anderson was then struck in the leg with an arrow, dropping him to the ground. The Captain grabbed Smith's musket and fired, then helped Anderson to his feet and attempted to escape. Unfortunately, they were quickly surrounded, and Jones shouted, "Surrender! We Surrender!"

haha. Remember the fight between the monitor and the (can't remember its name, might be Virginia). That ended in a draw because neither ship could get through the others armour. That was during the American civil war. Imagine what it would be like almost 300 years earlier.
Goodman Siu Qin was dead. Sargeant Yun T'in looked at his corpse, the body not yet rotten, with the stink of gunpowder in the air. He shook his head and said a prayer over his body. Then he lit the pyre.
The fire eagerly devoured Siu Qin's body. The rest of the party made the gesture for the Father and turned around. There was nothing else to say.
As for the prisoners-
The man who bore the sword and his assistant were tied to the tree. The other one- slain by Groaen- had been disposed off with whatever goods on his body taken. The latter also applied to the prisoners, stripped naked, and babbeling in that uncomrehensible dialect of theirs.
Yong Ming turned towards Sargeant Yun T'in.
"Take them to Captain?" he asked, his hand resting on the butt of his crossbow.
Sargeant Yun T'in nodded.
"First blindfold them. Don't want them to see where we are."
Yong Ming nodded and signed for Terry and Liang to untie the prisoners from the tree. Sargeant Yun T'in turned his attention to the foreigner's sword. It was a fine prize and if the Gods were looking, it could be his.

OOC: Jordaxia - Ah, but the thing most people don't read up on is that both (USS Monitor and CSS Virginia) left the battle scarred. The Monitor's wheelhouse had been mangle, and had the Virginia been in the battle any longer, the metal sheathing would have cracked. I don't suppose that in 1612 armor technology was advanced as it was in 1862.
IC: Captain Jones felt humiliated. Couldn't any of them understand what he was saying? He hoped they were taking him to an authority figure, and someone that spoke his language.

...I have certain ideas about the newly discovered creek that lies 2 leagues from the newly discovered sulfur caverns. According to the map, the creek manages to empty out in the small bay that Q'in Q'arn is positioned in. Perhaps a small ammunitions depot could be formed there- or a smithery...
It seems that the foreigners have been located. A certain Sargeant has claimed that he has 'jumped' two of them with the prizes set before me as proof of their alieness. I am not entirely too sure about giving them away- since much of the techniques used in the gun are vastly superior to our own. Somehow the shape of the barrel could be used as a means in to merge the musket with the crossbow...although it yet has been proven to be feasable....
I have ordered the prisoners to be shown before me- dressed and mended- due to the "clumsiness" they suffer. I'm not to sure what to do with that Sargeant or his men- example or ignore. They are Bei Lings- and the support is needed...

It was the twilight of early morning when Lt. Jacobsz came upon the Foreign Outpost where Captain Jones had been taken. He ordered the 25 soldiers, armed with muskets, to disembark. Trying to take the garrison of the post by surprise, they slowly crept up cliff.
Finally in range to attack, one of the soldiers fired his musket, killing the man on watch at the outpost. Another burst open the door and took all inside prisoner. The other soldiers set up camp around the outpost, and carefully looked for any sign of ambush.
Finally, Lt. Jacobsz personally raised the Kaufmanstad flag over the outpost and prepared to question the prisoners.
Qinti exchanged a look with Atzini. Atzini had the same look of bewilderment.
Why on Earth were they attacked? They were just there to pick up some furit that the Beilongs had left them-
Guiuio didn't even have a weapon on him-
OOC: sorry Kaufmanstad, but the outpost is little more than a wooden tower mostly used for trading. There is about two other towers located along the coastline- which are unmanned as well. The two people you took prisoner are A'tuchi guys, as seen above.

Jacobsz also noticed that they were all unarmed, so the use of force wasn't necessary. Jacobsz began the interrogation.
"From which nation are you from?"
They remained silent and appeared frightened.
"Who are you here with?"
They still did not seem to understand. Jacobsz met with Captain Snyder of the soldiers, and decided to free one of the prisoners. The hope was that the freed captive would bring back someone who could understand them. In the best way he could, Jacobsz gave the man they were going to free a message, and in signs, indicated that he should take it to a superior
The message read:
"Sir-

When I last left off I had 300 people on an island with a capital named Shipton.
IC: Governor Walkens was busy working at his desk. The colony had so far been marginal in profits and investors back home in his home country were getting anxious. The fur traders were losing an almost complete monopoly on furs from the new land, as other countries were vying for the same thing. There was little to do on the island they had settled. Timber was dwindling, and the only thing on the island were fresh fruits and corn, although a natural spring provided water for all. Also a newly discovered sulfur deposit would come in handy.
The Governor read over his proclaimation aloud to his aide to see if there was any problems. He would read in the city square two hours from then.
"In the Year of Our Lord 1612, I, Governor Walkens, hereby proclaim the annexation of lands on the mainland west of the big river still unnamed by us and east of the Okosh River as sovereign land of Malka. I yield to us a bountiful land ripe for the picking. I will send 100 troops and settlers to this land and they will leave promptly."
The Governor loooked to his aide in need of approval.
The aide replied "Very nice, sir. But what about the other countries?"
The Governor replied, "Ah yes, them. the Okosh Indians on the mainland have signed a pact with us. All 100 of them will join our ranks and fight if necessary against any trespassers."

"Your excellency, please pardon me, you must understand how truly frustrated I have been these past few days without any of your men able to understand me. My comment to you is a complete mistake on my part.
Allow me to introduce myself, I am Captain Henry Jones of Kaufmanstad. When your men captured me, I was exploring the southern reaches of the Colony of Presidentsland, which is currently under the leadership of Governor Johann von Blenheim. I would imagine that your men's attack on myself was a misunderstanding and that our two nations may be friends." Jones paused and cleared his throat. "I was curious if I would be able to have my sword returned, it means a great deal to me, as it was given to me as a gift for services I rendered to my nation."

Jacobsz ordered his men to stay quiet. As they slowly inched into the woods, he spotted a few of the foreigners ahead of him.
"Hand me a grenade." Jacobsz wispered. He lit the wooden fuse and and rammed it home into the grenade. He then tossed the grenade toward the intruders. The grenade rolled along the ground then stopped about a foot away from the foreigner and exploded, sending iron shrapnel in all directions. Jacobsz and his men ducked.

Wait, what do you mean by hostage taking? My governor would naver do that, unless he were in dire straights.

Jacobsz watched as 4 of his men were hit with darts, and another three scooped up into a net.
"Throw the rest of your grenades! Back to the fort!" The grenades were duly throw into the forest. Arrows began to fly, and two more of Jacobsz's men fell. Jacobsz and his remaining three men leaped back into the fort.
"Arm your muskets!" Jacobsz directed. "Bring out the prisoner!"

The Scout motioned his men to scatter. They did so, narrowly avoiding the thunder stones. The Scout noticed that only four of the foreigners had survived with one barking cries for his remaining men. The scout pulled the string back, aimed, and fired.
The bolt flew right into the leader's throat. The others in the forest, took the scout's lead, and aimed for the survivors.

Some of the Scout's friends were hit, their new bows falling to the ground, their last words a gasp into the jungle air. Yet their deed had been done for the foreigners fled like deer. Some of the fallen's companions threw down the bows, picked up their javelins, and started to pursue the foreigners, often throwing their spears as they ran. Three of the foreigners got hit. Others were assualted by the few that tackled them. The Scout frowned, sighed, then waved the rest of those surviving to tend to the wounded.

Two Jordaxian merchant sloops were docked at Calvintown, trading for furs, tobacco and other goods. At about half past 2 in the afternoon, three Kaufmanstad warships, all about 40 guns, the Republic, Griffin, and Grace anchored off Calvintown. The ships had a long, perilous journey and the crews were exhausted. Captain de Alva of the Republic disembarked, walking quickly past the Jordaxian ships to deliver a message to Governor von Blenheim:
Declaration of War
by order of
the Congress of Kaufmanstad
Whereas numerous injustices have been committed by the heathenous King of Jordaxia to the Republic of Kaufmanstad, it is the UNANIMOUS decision of this Congress to declare war on Jordaxia. The President is hereby granted power to raise armies, call up the navy, grant letters of marque, and do all within his power to hold up the honor of our great land of Kaufmanstad.
Governor Johann von Blenheim is also ordered to disrupt Jordaxian trade and conquer their possessions if possible.
After reading this, Von Blenheim dispatched 25 soldiers to secure the Jordaxian ships at the Calvintown docks.

Governor Von Blenheim recieved the joyfull news of Cpt. Jones' release and of the presence of the men from Kay Son. The Governor planned on having a feast in Jones' honor for his ability to clear up all the misunderstadings between Kaufmanstad and Kay Son.
This news was followed up by news of Lt. Jacobsz's demise in his search for Jones. Jacobsz had fought local tribesmen instead of searching and had turned a probably friendly tribe into a hostile one.
Governor Von Blenheim sent the following message to the Kay Son Colony:
Gentlemen of Kay Son-
I thank you for taking care of Captain Henry Jones and congratulate you on being civil men. The leaders of you Colony are obviously wise gentlemen of the highest calibre and I hope that our two nations will enjoy many fine years in harmony. Kaufmanstand and Kay son have had a conflict or two, but are on good terms now, or using diplomacy to reach good terms. i have a steady and well guarded wood source, a nearby forrest a few miles away from my colony. i also have a scouting party out there somewhere of about ten men i think, so there you have it, unless i am wrong on the base geogprahy, and the type of land, it wasnt mentioned, so i am basing what i say on assumptions.)
A lone scout from one of the colonies (whoever wants him can have him) was patrolling the forests. A twang of a bowstring can be heard, and a thin point of wood suddenly protrudes from the scout's ankle. Another shot dispatches him.
Two lean, tanned men wearing reptilian leather come out from the brush and pick up the body. They carry him quietly through the woods along paths the colonists wouldn't find if they weren't looking for them. Eventually, they reach a small camp. A little under forty are gathered: a tribe.
They set the scout down on the ground. He was still alive. A female, who's face was marked with red paint, pulled out a damp rag from one of the many pouches on her belt. She dabbed the second wound, and the scout died from the snake venom shortly after.
The men who had slain him quickly go over his body for distinctive items: money, ammunition, weapons, anything that may help the tribe learn about the strange new foe. After finding out what they could, they sent teenagers of either gender with parchments bearing crude symbols. Within a few days, all the tribes would know the nature of the enemies.

Kaufmanstad's colony, which is called Presidentsland, is made up of three towns, Calvintown (300 people), New Stuville (100), and Jonestown (90). Finding it necessary to expand the realm of the Grand Duchy of Poznon and provide for the commonwealth, wanting to explore the great world about us, and noting others have done so, the Grand Duchy of Poznon hereby commissions the colonization of the New Continent to the West. The initial expedition shall consist of the ships the Olmen, the Discovery, and the Laniski. Captain Curtis Churchill of the Discovery shall lead the other 104 colonists to the New Continent, whereupon arriving he shall be made Governor of the settlement, as he was elected to do so in Poznon. As soon as possible, a ship shall be sent back to Poznon, where a report on the settlement and the land will be made.
May God Bless the pioneers and the Grand Duchy of Poznon
Signed by The Parliament of Poznon, Duke Casimir Olski IV, and the Admiralty of the Navy.
The ships finally reached the New Continent after four months of journey, during which 5 colonists died, four of which were the Marshall family, making the number of settlers 100. They saw no sign yet of any others on the shore. They disembarked at a spot near a river and a large bay, which they both named 'Marie', for one who died. The spot was perfect for their settlement. A hil overlooked the woods, making for a good post to spot anyone approaching.
"My dear, fellow citizens: We have reached the New Continent!" announced Captain Churchill to the gathered settlers, who erupted into cheers. "I now claim this land in the name of the Grand Duchy of Poznon. And, shall hereby name it, after our homeland, New Poznon!" Churchill dug a banner bearing the Poznon into the ground and a group of muskets were fired into the air. "I also, herby name our first settlement, Marshalltown, after the Marshall family, who, along with Mary Marie, pershied on our journey. Let us not forget them." The colonists crossed themselves.
***
The colonsists consist thusly:
100 settlers;
95 of which are farmers, blacksmiths, etc.,
and 5 of which are professional soldiers, though thet also contribute to the work.
The armaments of Marshalltown are constituted of the following:
100 muskets
5 six-pound cannons
and 1 ten-pound cannon

" I have gathered you all here to address the growing threat of these foreigners coming to our native lands. We all have made sacrifices so far to appease them, fearing the fury of thier 'firesticks.' The time has come to start resisting. If we don't act now our lands may be lost forever. In order to achieve this, the seven tribes must unite against our common enemy. If you all agree to join, it will raise our numbers to almost 5 times that of these 'colonists.' I am still awaiting an envoy from Chief Muktar, and i will inform you all of his reply. The addition of his tribe is vital to our plans. For now I would like to ask that you cooperate as much as you can, and try and trade them some of the 'shiny stones' for firesticks. I hope you take my words to heart and may the Great Spirit be with you."
The Seven tribes have united, putting aside past differences for the common defense. we await a response from Muktar at this time.
Sorry i kinda jumped in, any information i missed that i need to address at all?
IC 1:One of the runners sent to another tribe returns with that tribe's knowledge of the enemy.
"Groups of ten? This is terrible. That one's groupmembers will come looking for their fallen warrior. We must dispatch them."
The tribal elder nodded at the warchief's decision. Fighting was inevitable, and it would be better if they were the ones with the element of suprise. "Send a party of ten, armed with bows and wearing the warpaint of the woods. They will strike them from all sides, catching them in a vulnerable position."
"Of course. I do believe extra attention should be given to vulnerable points initially."
The hunting party was prepared. It composed of six females and four males, most were adults, but one of each gender were teenagers. They took up bows, each handmade by the wielder, and prepared to track down the scouting party. Two of the males were the ones who managed to dispatch the loner, leading them toward where he was found so as to strike down their foe.
OOC 1: Last Samurai reference. Guys with bows took on guys with guns during the rescue seen. The guns in the movie were superior to those of 1612. Also, consider that the hunting party will have suprise on their side. I'm not saying that my victory is certain, but don't say you win automatically because you have guns.
IC 2: "Tell this alliance we will not cooperate with their tactics, but we will not oppose them. We can fight them with the bow as our 'firestick' and the woods to ward off theirs."

*a little later it got a little darker, but the fire was still going, the boar was done and seven of the nine men left ate around the fire, the other two were on lookout duty, but each had a portion of meat they could eat while standing up, all of them were uneased however, one of them had not returned from a simple task, so the Kihamerians held their pistols close, and their melee weapons (an assortment of sabres, axes, hatchets and daggers) closer.*
The settlers took to work right away. Nearby trees were felled to help construct houses and a fence. The colonists were still not quite adapt at farming, but fish from the river and shore were plentiful. A small group of men explored the Marie River. A little way down, they found a natural harbor. Naturalists and Governor Churhill, who was a man of learning, recorded every new plant and animal on their excursions out of Marshalltown.
Not far from where the scouting party is camped, female singing can be heard.
OOC: They were reloading, but only because they were already loaded when they came around the corner. Proof that even then firearms were only accurate over a short distance and not very reliable in a skirmish.

OOC: NOTE ABOUT FIREARMS, ETC.
All technology used in this thread must have been available in the year 1612 or earlier. So, any firearms being used must be match-lock, muzzle loading muskets or pistols. Flintlocks will not exist for another 50 or 60 years. The highest pound cannon is a 10 pounder.
Furthermore, no one playing as a native group may use firearms unless they have traded for them.
Presidentsland is located on a bay with four rivers, the climate identical to that of the Real life Chesapeake Bay. the Colony of Presidentsland is composed of 490 people, of which 25 are professional soldiers, divide among three towns, Calvintown (300 people), New Stuville (100), and Jonestown (90).
IC: People in the colony went about their new lives, fishing in the April River, bringing in the first harvests of wheat and corn, carefully watching the woods.
Governor Von Blenheim had heard little of Natives in Presidentsland, and could never get a hold of any that would talk. He grew worried and sent messages to the three forts of the colony to be prepared and keep the forts in good order.
"They cut off his right hand."
"So they are willing to sell out to the outsiders, but still stay with tradition to scorn our vigiliance. See to the messenger's wounds. He is to be well treated."
The female singing heard by the scouting party is now accompanied by splashing water.
Secret IC:
The singing female is from the hunting party. She is trying to lure as many scouts as possible into a trap, with the other nine hunters hiding with their bows. She is bathing by a river which flows away from the camp.

Three ships sail towards South-East as then in the leading ship(a Frigate) sounds the bell. "Land o'hoy!" shouts someone from the top of the mast. The ships got closer to the shore and sent the Swordfish to investigate closer as the other ships anchored twenty feet away from the shores. Only a day later, the Swordfish came back to the other ships, telling that there was a long river leading to the inlands. Captain Zacharias Brown was the leader of this fleet set the course towards the river that lead them towards one of the beautifullest place the Captain had ever saw.
This was the place the four ships would anchor and build a colony. There was Isben, the glorious colony that was building a fort to the other side of the river.

Marahalltown was steadily growing. Houses had been constructed, and the wall around the village was almost complete. A tower had been placed atop the hill, along with a six-pounder. Governor Churchill wished to send the Olmen soon after the village was better-built. He was also wondering about the other settlers, and the Natives. One small group of them(Not your men, King L.), who had traveled a long way from the South, had come upon Marshalltown. After about a day or so, a sign language had developed between them. The Natives showed the settlers how to plant corn and other crops. In return, the settlers gave them glass, clothes from Poznon, and a musket.
"It bothers me so that we have yet to see any other settlers of this land." pondered Churchill to his companions. "I should like an envoy be sent South, to look for others." And so, a delegation of 10 armed men was sent South to search for other colonists.

Recently the number of weapons are being bumped up in lieu of the newly invented "repeating" crossbow with match-locks only used as a reserve. Also; the people themselves are busy building a warship built along the lines of a junk, armored with small cannons, catapults, and a giant crossbow [the primary weapon]

Sadly, 'twas not our tribesmen but of our good allies and friends, the A'tchui people, whom was threaten'd by a mistaken action against our forces. The chief of that tribe has't given me a statement of wounded comrades as well as a fallen one whom was taken in a spirit of ill will, and slain most dastardly in the advent of war. I do not know if thee art in thy spirit of weyr-gilds, but that topic doth do lie 'pon the table.
But that weight put aside for other matters, thee bastard scions of ill humor may haveth closeted thy opinions about our fair land. The Kay Sons are of a religious sect that seemeth that twists any nation to their own matters, thereby promoting their banner of "goode deedes" so that they may have words in the lands. However, this action has been countered by our good ally the Frenchfors, whom has shown great might in countering their spirities of maliciousness, and the fair Kingdom of T'sing T'sun. Beware my friend of their double face and mind our words of wisdome and kindness to you.
The female flips a longspear with a wooden tip out of the water once the man is close enough, holding it to his neck in a manner in which he cannot make a noise without piercing his own throat. Three hunters make themselves known, two pointing bows while the third, one of the teenagers, comes out with rope to bind him. The archers hold their bows ready, while the roper gestures for the man to drop his club.

*the man was chaugt completely by suprise, as he looked around he was ambushed, completely surrounded, he made just a slight step back and he shrugged his shoulders, letting the club into the river with a splash, he kept his hands up, continually looking around.*
The roper picks up the club and sticks it in front of the man's arms but behind his torso, then ties the hands together in front, effectivly neutralizing any movement in that area. The archers keep their aim while the other teenager, the female, helps the baiter get dressed again. The baiter gets some rope and ties it tight to the binds in front. The party heads back to camp to drop off their captive.
Upon reaching the camp, the hunting party disperses to their various lumber yurts. The baiter, who had been holding the rope to lead the captive, brought him into her own hut. The teenage male followed in shortly after with a set of native clothes that would fit the captive (more or less.) The baiter gestured for him to change clothes.

*the man was completely silent, and either scared stiff or angry he hadnt listend the his leader, he waited patiently, when the offer of clothes arrived he moved his hands around to show the 'baiter' that they were tied up, and he couldnt move. it crossed his mind that as soon as the ropes were off to run as far and as fast as possible, but he would probably be found and killed, and on top of that he had a sense of honor, he was a prisoner of war, but more a prisoner of his own stupidity, many things crossedh is mind, but he tried to stay calm.*
The baiter pulled out a crude knife and cut the ropes, and the teenager held a javelin ready.

My Lords;
We have just completed the construction of the first ship constructed on T'sing T'sin colonial soil. We have named it the HMS Long Sing, in honour of Your Most Honourable Brother, whom vanquished the most hated enemy at Ling Hung Mountain. It currently hosts the size of 30 men, 2 arrow galleys, 5 cannons, and 4 sails. The cannons, upon the design we borrowed from our northern allies, have the capabilities of swerving to the offending ship, as well as to sink it to the depths of the ocean. The second ship (within the same class) has yet to be named and I wish your permission in naming it the Kofiminsted, in honour of those we made peace with.
On another note, the repeating crossbow is proving to be a success with the A'tchui people. It has currently been distributed with their fellow allies and are appearing within their hunting parties. This distribution has been assisted with some improvements; Warrior Grivins has promoted the idea of a grooved 'barrelle' for the bolts to continue, thusly increasing the amount of bolts fired from the weapon. Although this has yet to be seen within proper military action, I have high hopes of it's usefullness. Attached to this letter is a drawing of that design.

Presidentsland is located on the southernmost river on this map (the James River)

To his excellency, President Adriaen van der Donck of Kaufmanstad
Sir-
I am pleased to report that all is well in the colony. In order to better supply our people with food, I have divided us into three towns, Calvintown, the capital and most prinicpal one. New Stuville lies across the river from Calvintown, and Jonestown, upriver, named after its founder, Captain Jones.
I am also pleased to report that I have concluded a treaty with men from the Tisin-Tsaw Kingdoms. Our peoples had a brief misunderstanding, and blood was shed, however, Captain Jones was able to negotiate a peace settlement.
Finally, the war with Jordaxia is slow. I have seized three of their merchant vessels, and am awaiting a reaction.
-Your most humble servant,
Governor Johann von Blenheim

OOC: Furbs- Yes you may join. Just declare (like this) where your colony would be located on the real life North America.
Kaufmanstad and Kihameria occupy the Chesapeake Bay (Virginia and Maryland respectively)
Kay Son has laid claim to the area around Roanoke Island, North Carolina (the Outer Banks)
Ponzon has Savannah, Georgia (or there abouts, he hasn't declared)
Jordaxia has yet to lay claim to a real life location.

ok i lay claim to New Jersey for my colony! and we are a vicious bunch of natives, lots of pointy spears!
The Frigate Handstand heads for the New World. Their leader is Capt. Garry Garisa. They land at RL New York. The Colony of Langey was formed.
He order the buliding of a wooden fort on coast. The cannons from the ship will be place into the fort. The fort is named Fort Langey.

i am natives. there is are quite a few of them and they live mainly around the bay and have lots of horses. they are led by chief Tayo.
5 scouts are send to search the new colony.
(Ah, good.
Sorry Kaufmanstad, in my initial post, I said I was South of you, but I would like to change my mind, if you don't mind. I would like to be New Jersey, particularly South Amboy. So, the river I described as the Marie River is in fact the Raritan River.)

OOC-Sorry been kinda busy lately, let the attack begin. I think we have 5 colonists and 3 natives at this point, I may have counted wrong.
IC- Eagleeye crept to the tree line and peered out. around him, the natives fanned out. He and 19 others around him prepared their muskets. As he looked out at the fort, he saw the flag of Presidentsland rising to mark the beginning of a new day in New Stuville. He signaled to his left and fell back into the woods.
"I count about 15 men awake, if we can overwelm them, we should be able to catch the others sleeping. The problem is getting inside the fort. Any ideas?"
"We could send a few men out as traders, and rush the fort when the gates are opened."
"I take it you are volunteering. You take 4 of your best men and approach the fort. Do not appear hostile, I will take your firestick.
The natives slipped out of the forest and approached the fort. A man on top of the gate called down to them, asking for thier intent.
"We bring trade stuff." One replied, in crude tongue.
"I will check with our Commander." The man disappeared behind the wall.

Furbs, we've went over it, there are no horses in the new world. Kay Son, feel free to have colonists land in my colony, i would welcome them, i have a few docks/piers i have mentioned, there shouldnt be a problem.)

My Most Honourable Servant;
I must congratulate you on the success of the colony. Good news is scarce these days and your discovery did give a light within these troubled days. Some interest was expressed by some Chiang Lo pilgrims on joining your settlement in the hopes of more success and I have given them the permission and Royal Seal to do so. Please make room for them within the colony; I give you further credence to build further construction in My Name.
Also; Please query your native allies on if they want to establish a defensive perimeter around the colony in the guise of a native born militia, with all rights and pay of a soldier in the ranks of the Army. I seek to emulate the success of the Quarter Men Militia within these new lands of mine.

The baiter shakes her head. "No. You no trick Malaya." She holds the knife she used to cut the knife ready. Two things are apparent: decency is nonissue for these people, and they don't trust their captive.
OOC: New Langey is present day New York City.
Supply ships arrives from the homeland. They bring more colonist, food, soldiers, supplies, and weapons. Jennifer William is the first child born in the New World. The scouts tell of indians in the the land near by.(OOC: Furbs that's your group.)

We seem to be lost with our ships being blown tremendously off the map. None of the features seem familar- tropical trees, beaches, and even the occasional stench of bog. Perhaps we took the storm too much and did not get off it. I have sent a message through the flags for a scout ship to see if the land is dangerous. If not, we can see if supplies can be gathered, then on to getting back on to the map. I hope the Colony is somewhere north of here....

(ok no horses, sorry was not here when you said that.) two men out hunting see the scouts, they return and bringing another five strong men follow them back. they find a hidden place and watch to see if they should attack or trade.

OOC: Kihameria - Well, if you want to be away from everyone, I would suggest settling at Charleston, South Carolina (find an atlas). It has a very nice harbor and no one is to the south of me.
IC: New Stuville, Presidentsland
Captain Charles Johnson was wary about the Indians. Why are do they want to trade now? Well, best keep our guard up. Johnson sent a message via flag signal to the warship Republic across the river to sail over within cannon shot. Once the ship had arrived, Johnson sent three men, all armed with muskets and protected with breast plates and helmets to trade with the indians. The fort had been on alert for days due to the war between Jordaxia and Kaufmanstad.
New Stuville's Fort gates were opened.

IC: Eagleeye watched patiently as his men signalled to the guards of the fort.
They sat waiting for what seemed like a lifetime. Just when he thought maybe their plans had failed he heard a shout and saw the gates swing open. This was it. "Forward!"
The 'traders' quickly pulled hatchets and charged the three men exiting the fort. One managed to get a wild shot off before the warriors struck. A few quick blows dispatched the soldiers before a volley rang out and the warriors collapsed, dead. A wail was heard and warriors poured out of the forest and rushed the gate. another volley was heard as the natives, unsure about the effectiveness of the muskets, fired at the guards attempting the secure the gate. The volley flew wild, the worst wound being a graze across the arm of one of the men. The natives, with Eagleeye in front, poured through the gate and spang upon the now reloading guards...
