Well what are your thoughts about all of this? Is it as much of a monumentous occasion as the media says?

I can say I'm excited....and it's only 12 hours away.

Is anyone with me out there? Or am I celebrating the end of the bush-era alone?

No. It's interesting, but no. The rest is just dollar signs in the eyes of some people.

When this country was founded, we enslaved people like him. We had to fight a bloody war around a hundred and forty years ago before that ended. A little over forty years ago, a time he was born in, he still would have been segregated. When he was born, there was still debate whether or not someone like him should be allowed in certain schools or institutions. Now, he will become the 44th president of the United States.

Yeah. Kind of a big deal.

How many would've said the same if Colin Powell had stepped up in '96 when the idea was plausible? You're absolutely right about the history, of course, but the fact that '08 was '08 and not '68 makes the occurrence that much less remarkable. The history should be noted and appreciated, but the media is going overboard for their own reasons.

Just as many. In 1996 there was a great deal of affection for Powell on both sides of the aisle.

That it didn't happen in absolute sync with the civil rights movement is a weak criteria for measuring the event. As is the thinly veiled 'mean ol' media' complaint. Tell it to Rush, I'm not buyin'...

Liberal bias wasn't the implication. Simple and understandable opportunism, more like. It's a noteworthy and highly interesting event puffed up by a few orders of magnitude for various reasons.

I'll be missing it because I am SO not going to try and wake up at around 2 am with a full day of teaching tomorrow and chance waking my son who already is keeping my wife and I up a good chunk of the night just to watch something that will be repeated for the next week and a half on the news.

Am I excited about it though? Yeah, it's a historical event, and one that I will remember and tell my son about when he is older because he will not remember it. I will also tell him with pride about how a mixed race man was elected president and sworn in, and so could he, if he chose to. I am also enjoying being an American abroad again because folks are excited (Although the powers that be in Japan are nervous) over here. Hell, Obama Onsen just made happi coats just for the First Family so you know it's a good time to be able to say you're from the USA. And, yes, I am looking forward to the end of President Bush's administration, though I am trying to not gloat and to remember that the man did give 8 years of service to his country. I might disagree with just about everything that he did. I might not like him, but I do have to admit that he did what he thought was best for the nation and kept with it.

Besides, I remember when President Bush replaced President Clinton and how Republicans gloated that the hillbilly was finally gone and how annoyed that made me. I would be hypocritical now if I did the same about the cowboy.

It's a historic moment, no matter who you backed. A lot of people see all of the tradition as an unnecessary waste of precious time and money, but I rather like it. No matter what you think of the last 8 years, it feels as if we really are back to a clean slate. The fact that we can celebrate now as we did in the past reassures me, at least, that America is still a wonderful nation to live in and not beyond fixing.

Best of luck to you, President Obama. You have quite a slog ahead of you.

And (although it pains me to say this) thank you, President Bush. You served America and stuck to your guns, even though they had the tendency to backfire like The Mexican. I don't really feel that you deserve it, but may you live out the rest of your days in peace. I honestly hope that your decisions are vindicated in the future, though I fear that such a turn of events is unlikely.

Hey, we've got a Hawaiian President now and they've got Hula dancers. It's the perfect combination.

EDIT: I meant a President from Hawaii, my apologies to all native Hawaiians (including my scarier cousins).

Noticed that as well. George Walker Bush....... Barack H. Obama

I sorta laughed, honestly. It's like they're thinking his middle name is "Shit" or something.

And now, the most American thing in world, the British national anthem.

Serve yourself with prawns on the barbie, why dontcha?

They should have had Aretha sing "Respect".

Agreed.

I thought I heard "Robert".

Maybe I'm just crazy though.

Me too. I heard "Joseph Robert F. Biden", I must be crazier.

John Williams? Really? I mean, I like him and all, but we could have done better than that...

Yeah, too subdued.

"So help you God?"

"Uhm... no."

I wonder what that would've caused?!?

Hell. He probably woulda been stepped on by Rick Warren.

And now he makes sweet love to the English Language.

(Hands out cigarettes for after speech)

It seems to be more a speech for the current times than a speech for the ages. No surprise really, but still...

Many subtle kicks towards Bush ;)

So many take thats, but it's really not surprising.

Ready to lead again? Hahaha. Who says we want you too, Americans?

(kicks you out of topic)

If you aren't going to make constructive comments, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

I missed that bit (went to make a sandwitch). Whats the context?

"We are a nation of Hindus, Jews, Muslims, etc."

Great speech he's making, he's got the crowd in the palm of his hand and he's got good spirit.

The Framers set it for March 4. That was an absurdly long interregnum already, and after the second really disastrous transition (the worst transition of all time has to be 1860-61, with seven states up and quitting while neither outgoing nor incoming President could do anything; but 1932-33 when the entire banking system shut down was the last straw), moving the date forward seemed a good idea.

You know I bet the place where Obama got out was carefully chosen to min. the risk of sniper shootings or something. But as the tv says(CNN) it still takes guts to get out of "The Beast".

Clever note--in order to make it so that if something were to happen during the inauguration, and so that the new President wouldn't be a lame duck from the Bush admin, the "undisclosed location" guy was Bob Gates.

Clever.
