With great trepidation, I clicked the link. I knew what it should be, otherwise I wouldn't have clicked it... but there's always the chance it was going to turn out to be Kylie or something....

Hmm true, I haven't really drunk a lot of European beer at all. Should probably start on something a little lighter and work up. This Anchor Steam sounds promising -- hope there's no trouble in getting it here.
Thank you for recommendations!

Anchor Steam is brewed in San Francisco. I don't know how widely it's distributed. It's still a pretty hard hitting beer, though a stout at all like Guinness.

LOL! I've heard that one before.:D

When I heard it the first time, it was about sex in a rowboat and English beer (an Irish dude was telling the joke).

Hence, the perception that Americans like drinking piss, and there is no such thing as good American beer. You are being judged on your market trends, I'm afraid.

Unfortunate indeed.

I've heard some say that the few large and crappy beers dominating is largely a result of prohibition.

How hard is brewing your own beer? I have a bit of a reputation among my friends for being quite the drinker, and brewing my own beer would be very in character.

Beer is a bit fussy in some respects. Mead is simpler.

Okay, well I know a few places which tend to get high quality beers in -- I'll have a look around this weekend.

For pints, Carlsberg. I'll definitely drink a half-pint of Kronenburg White Beer, though. Can't really stomach a full pint of the stuff.

Hoegaarden recently, but Sam Adams most of the time. The variety of Sam Adams seals the deal.

Although, there is a hole in the wall bar where I used to live that has somewhere in the neighborhood of 180 beers from around the world. Always something different to try!

Other than that, I go for stouts, porters - anything that has to change color before I piss it out again.

Well the other color usually comes out elsewhere...especially with microbrewery stouts and porters. That is why you never drink a stout with extra hot chicken wings or extra jalapeno nachos.

Oh wow. That sounds like a recipe for disaster, regrets and much woe a few hours later.

Stouts and porters I find go best with sour and starchy stuff. Sandwiches, especially with good sourdough bread.

I don't know what my favourite beer is, but I'll usually plump for a Belhaven Best, a London Pride, a Deucher's IPA or whatever the local heavy is.

For pints, Carlsberg.

Its pretty simple. A good friend of mine made some great mead once.

All you need is a fermentation bottle or canister, honey, water, yeast and possibly some spices for the taste.

I don't know that I'd call it hard hitting. Compared to BudMilloors yes, but at 4.9% it's not all that hard. My favorite brewery (Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo, MI) only makes 4 beers (out of the 53 they've made) with 4.9% abv or less. For something hard hitting, but not obnoxiously strong, I suggest Hopslam (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/287/17112/?view=beer&sort=latest&start=10)

I was talking more about taste. But it does seem to get me drunker faster than its abv would suggest.

You've probably never heard of my favorite beer. Four Peaks makes an incredible oatmeal stout, but they don't ship it. They only make it for the bar at their main brewery.

My second favorite is Guinness.

It's certainly a decent enough beer. I put it in the same league as Bell's Oberon and Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat.

since I'm belgian, I've got a good choice, but I'd still go with Primus for the lighter beers and Duvel for the somewhat stronger beers.

Yeah, there's a point where enough is enough.

Strongest beer I've had in terms of alcohol was Old Rasputin. That was pretty good. My friend had this one called "Beelzebub" or some such that was quite a bit stronger, in the teens in terms of percentage. Never tried it myself though.

Not that I'm complaining, but how many threads about beer have we had thus far? It seems to be a popular subject, even though clowns, politics and the stupidity of the human race still get more attention. Somehow that just ain't fair.

Because beer makes us forget about politics and the stupidity of the human race. We pay for it the nest day when dronwing it but yeah.\

Tip: Even though you like beer it does not me you can go ahead and drink it for 18 hours regardless of the excuse even if you just finished you last exam for your degree.

Blue Moon

This thread needs a Public Poll with at least 9 choices and other post it. The German beer Becks, La Llave as we Cubans call it Miami is the most popular beer among most Cuban Americans in Miami. Becks-Key-Llave-La Llave

When the stores run out of Becks we get a Dutch Heineken or a German St Paulis girl.

I have always heard that many Europeans like in Germany drink thier beer hot as in not cold as in America. Is this true? A friend of mine who lived in Germany claims it is only one kind of Beer. I forget the name of the beer he told me is drank hot not cold. Another friend of mine who has been to Germany told me kids of a certain age can drink beer and or wine I think he also said in restaurants if accompanied by their parents. Germans drink beer even during breakfast, is this true?

Not hot, no. Most beer in Germany is served at room temperature, which would of course be hot in Miami but isn't in Germany.

Reminds me of another joke:

Q: Why is American beer served ice cold?
A: So you know it's not piss!
