It's put on the right because etiquette states that the US flag be on the right side of any procession. At least, that's what they tell us.
They're velcro backed, and they're plastic because they're highly reflective when looked at with IR devices for IFF purposes.
There are rules for when you should wear your helmet but I really don't care about them.

IFF purposes? IR means Infra-Red, right? I don't know what IFF stands for.
It seems like the helmet would get kinda hot and such after a while wearing it. Does it?

Not really, at least not unreasonably so in the Middle Eastern heat. The new helmets are much lighter and more comfortable than the old ones. I still hate the damned things.

We have a wide temperature variance here (between 110 as the high in the summer and 35 as the the low in the winter) so I end up going between briefs to a full suit of pajamas and socks

I sleep in whatever clothes I have worn for the day. Except when it's cold outside, then I put on shorts and a t-shirt.
