Germany and any other country with their own Comedy Central channel or access to CNN International technically get the Daily Show as well, 'cept it's the Global Edition.

It isn't CNN International or Comedy Central. Its the Comedy Network which is owned by CTVglobemedia. Canadians are broadcasting your American programming!

I know this has been mentioned in the mega thread, but I think it deserves a new thread. If it doesn't then I implore the mods to merge it. I am enraged at this notion that there are real Americans and fake Americans. I am enraged that McCain/Palin is suggesting that there are pro-American places in this country and anti-American parts. It makes me want to scream that people like Nancy PFhthendnehsndndnNower would prop up this BS on national television. It makes me angry that a congresswoman would ask for an investigation into congress to find those who are anti-America. I don't get mad about Rush Limbaugh because I already see him as a circus side show. These people should be punched in the face every time they blabber on about this tripe. As a fake American from NY/NJ I raise a huge middle finger in the air to all of these clowns. I'll take my un-American Marine ass and vote against every one of you that makes these stupid claims. I'll write letters to editors and expose your web of lies and bigotry. I'll remind you that Osama Bin Laden thought NYC was real America when he murdered two of my friends and 3,000+ others. How dare you continue to try and divide this nation! We will come together and destroy you and your ugly mindset.

#end rant#

What do you make of this tactic? It's the same tactic that GWB used in his "with us or against us" bullshit. Does this stick in your throat like it does mine. I'd like to hear from you all on this. The real America and the fake America. I'd also like to hear from the citizens of the world on this board. What do you think about this bigotry and hatred?

Thank you.

How can you be unAmerican and be a Marine? There are a lot of Anti-American folks out there.

How is it bs to say that someone either supports terrorism or is against it? You are angry and you confuse me.

There are Muslim Marines, as evidenced by Quantico opening up an Islamic Center. And the McCain Mob is of the mentality that Muslim = UnAmerican.

It's as old as politics itself to claim that you (rather than your opponent) represent the "real" [whatever group] and the values associated with it. Done with subtlety, it works. Done in a bombastic or jingoistic way, it sounds bombastic or jingoistic, which can doom a candidate.

I don't like to see it from my candidate, because if it's noticible enough that I'm conscious of it, it's a failure and won't do him/her any good - that's the point.

It's not necessarily racist or bigotted, though, to suggest that your group is more representative of the common person/people than some other group. That's politics. There's nothing logically wrong with arguing that a sample isn't representative of a population - that's basic statistics. Claiming that some gathering of liberals in Hollywood isn't the "real" America, as happens sometimes, isn't wrong, but neither is it wrong to say that a similar gathering of conservatives isn't representative of the "real" America. It's near impossible to put together a group that *is* representative of the "real" America - though there's big money to be made in market research if you can come close!

And the McCain Mob is of the mentality that Muslim = UnAmerican.

That isn't true of any I've ever met, though I make an effort to avoid the obviously insane. :p

...what?

How can you not like watermelon?!

Sorry, I just don't. It's a texture thing. Some melon flavors are okay -- a very good cantaloupe's juice is good -- but the texture just feels slimy and like something I shouldn't be eating. I don't begrudge those who love them, but I politely refuse when offered melon.

I don't mean to offend.

To the first point you made that is exactly my supposition. According to Sarah Palin, I live amongst the liberal elites in NY/NJ. It's not a "pro-American part of the country." It's BS to say that one group of people represents the "true America" and the other does not. It's not a matter of saying you support terrorism or not. It's a matter of saying, "I do not support terrorism but I also do not support the war in Iraq." Then being told you are anti-American because you don't support the war. Have I clarified my intentions?

Well, consider for one moment that you don't actually know what the bolded words mean.

Well, while he may not have commented on Muslims, McCain himself did imply that Arabs can't be decent family men or good citizens, and I imagine a large part, even a majority, of his supporters do not know that there's a difference. :p

But then, I suppose you haven't met McCain.

Oh, you didn't. I was just shocked, since I've never heard of anyone disliking watermelon.

The thing is, all sides are practicing this sort of divisive politics, though one side is playing it up far more so than the other. Even as we deride people like Palin, we're grouping them in our own mindset into a group we have to defeat in order to get things done properly.

Aha, just the majority, then? :p I guess it must've just been my good fortune to have steered clear of those bigotted arch-conservative boogeymen all these years. I'll be sure to keep an eye out next time I'm at an event.

Thing is, if people like Palin weren't so keen on making their beliefs the one and only way to do things -- by law -- I'd be far less likely to see them as opponents of any kind. So long as there are actually people out there who are so blinkered as to be one-issue voters, and so long as politicians like Palin are there to goad them into a furor over that one issue to the exclusion of anything else, how can I see them as anything BUT opposition, and a force to be fiercely opposed at that?
