I mean, the amounts of wealth channeled through Mongol territory were truly staggering when you consider most major trade between Asia and Europe traveled overland at the time.

Prussia was one of Europe's foremost industrial and scientific powers, and by the time of the German Empire that territory was a rival to the United States and more than a formidable challenge to the industrial might of the United Kingdom.

Other than the tribute they forced their defeated enemies to pay, the Mongols controlled very little of the wealth in their empire.
I definatly get what you mean by this, but the ammount of wealth held by the empire (note: I'm seperating the empire from the main group present) was vast. While the Mongols didn't control it, it was still contained in the empire, along with all the science and technology that almost inevitably go with wealth.


(As an aside, I had a professor who has written a bit about Mongolia back in Freshman year...we were discussing power structures in civilizations, and how a less-developed group may rapidly develop as it mirrors a neighbor. In the case of Mongolia, it mirrored China. As China fell, the Mongols lost their model, and had to collapse soon after)

Even excepting Mongolia, as I can see an argument both ways, and the huns, as I know next to nothing about them, the vast majority of nations that hold influence, both historically and in the modern world, also hold the wealth of the region.

While I think the OP has some valid points about the divisiveness of race policy in our culture, I don't see any logic in being 'proud' of one's race.

Your race is a function of who your parents were. It's not an accomplishment or an achievement. If you're white, it's because your parents were white. What's to be proud of? Be proud of your Education, be proud of your skill at Chess. Be proud of your job. If you want to be proud of something, be proud of the elements in your life you actually control.

That's an incredible over-simplification. I've seen racists and bigots who didn't hate the objects of their bigotry. Sexist men love and even like their wives. My father-in-law didn't hate African-Americans, he didn't even think they were inferior, he just thought that they should know their place. I have a few points to make on issues that have been made in other posts

1) Why would anyone be proud of their skin colour or race? They didn't choose it, they didn't achive something to get it, it's just some random peices of DNA that have little to do with your life exept for what factor sunblock you need. (For me it's factor infinity, but I'll never get vitamin D defficiancy)

2) Equal opertunities policies just makes non predudice pepole look down on pepole they normaly wouldn't look down on. I'm not ethnic, but I will still probably spend a large chunk of my life convincing pepole that I would still be where I am if I was a non-disabled male.

3) Cultrually, I think pepole should be proud of who they are but accept where they are. If I whent to a place where the culture was very different I would be, and should be, expected to conform to the rules of that culture. Yes, I could aply my own culture within that, but it would be wrong to demand that the culture change to accomidate me.

4) I do think accusations of racism are taken more seriously when the victims are of a minority. However, there isn't really enough of it going on around me to make an assesment, we're a sensible town.

5) Finaly, I had one black girl in my class at primary school and oneday in about year 3 allot of us came home and said to our parents "did you know, M's black?". We hadn't really come across the term before, to us M's skin being dark brown was no different from my eyes being blue. Most of my primary school class now know about being proud of differences and aware of everything unique. But to be honest, just because we learned that veiw second doesn't stop it being sillier.
