OK all, in order to keep the forum from being spammed in 5 different threads about the debate in, now, just over half an hour, I'm creating this thread so we can keep live commentary going as the debate progresses. So I think we can keep the clutter down by keeping all debate related comments (who said what and when, was it good? was it bad? who won? who lost?) to here.

Anyway to watch online?

Looks like CNN and CBS are streaming it. FOX and NBC's websites confuse me too much to tell whether they are or not.

edit: I'm watching the pregame show on CNN.com. The streaming video applet has a volume slider, but it seems the only settings the sound has are loud, loud, and off. :(

This was actually pretty fun in 2004, I've been kinda looking forward to it.

The spin is already well under way on Fox - they're prepping the audience with reassurances about how McCain motivated House Republicans to jump onboard with 'the deal' (which, as far as I am aware... hasn't been actually dealt yet...).

Awesome. I know what the message MEANS before it's even been said. Fox rules.

Man, things are already getting testy on CNN.com. Pretty hilarious.

GnI, regarding the "deal"

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/26/bailout.talks/index.html

I particularly enjoyed this quote from my state's own shady Congressman, Barney Frank.

"We're back on the progress track. We had a little bit of a glitch yesterday," Frank said. "Now that Sen. McCain is safely in Mississippi, we can get back to serious work. I am convinced that by Sunday we will have an agreement on this bill that people will understand."

So Obama began with general coments on the economy, sounds like he hit the main points well.

McCain seems to go with the "folksy" approach, the "I'm not feeling too well about it tonight". He's trying to sell it as "we need to help the american people" but I think Obama did it better. He basically sounds like he's repeating the same points Obama made two minutes earlier

Omg, waste him on nuclear energy you jackass. The amount of money that the government spends subsidizing nuclear energy is ridiculous. Even with those subsidies, nuclear energy is one of the highest cost energy sources.

The public is receptive to nuclear power - if there was anything to jump on, it would've been nuclear waste storage.

Edit: 40 minutes in and still no foreign policy questions.

I do think they cannot fairly be too incredibly specific on this one. I do think Obama did nicely when he addressed some of the more specific problems. McCain basically suggested we stop everything. That sounds like "suspending" the campaign, "the gas tax holiday" and "a 9/11 commission" as a solution. He seems to support freezing whenever there is a problem. That's not an answer. That's just stopping addressing it at all.
